Today I talk with Summer Gross about the lies we often believe about ourselves. Summer is an Anglican priest, a homeschool mom and a spiritual director. When she was 10 years old her family moved from Maine to a rural town in Ohio. The move caused her to encounter school bullies and she started to establish lies that would take 20-plus years to undo. Lies, either spoken directly to us or implied through actions of others, have a way of seeping into our souls and defining us. In order to stop these lies, we have to acknowledge them and then go through a healing process that provides us with truth. Today Summer will walk us through her journey and provide insight and tools that we can use to break free from the lies we tell ourselves. I woke up that morning in a suite at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. I felt terrible.I was in town for a trade show and the night before a client had taken me to dinner. We ordered these massive, hundred-dollar steaks, drank several glasses of wine, and gorged ourselves on ice cream and desserts. I’d brought the leftovers back to the room and they were still sitting on the counter. I glanced around the room. Although they had upgraded my room to a suite, the place was run down and sad. There was a Jacuzzi in the middle of the room and the place reeked of alcohol a previous guest had spilled. I got out of bed and looked at myself in the full-length mirror. I was six-foot-two and I weighed 235 pounds I carried it well, but, not well enough. I felt sick. I was flabby and tired and filled with regret and remorse. I was going through my second divorce, I was in a lawsuit with my first wife, and my blood pressure was so high that my doctor had put me on medicine to control it. Vegas baby! As I stood in front of the mirror, I asked myself, “How the hell did I get here?”     Part CEO, part personal development wonk, and part biohacker info geek, King is a self-confessed serial entrepreneur. While his favorite book list contains many success-oriented and personal-development classics, the classic definition of achieving success (e.g. make a lot of money) is not what inspires or motivates King. He follows more of a “you aren’t doing well unless you’re also doing some good” line of thinking. King’s company has been built around the simple principle of “do the right thing.” Founded by King in 1999, Stevia Brands Inc. is one of the largest importers, manufacturers and distributors of clean-label sweetening systems and natural sweeteners. I'm not sure I ever had a good memory. And now its certainly not as good as it was. Brad promises if we follow him, our memory could be better than it ever was.  Brad Zupp is a man of many talents. Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms of our listening audience. Today Summer and I talk about the importance of letting your mom know that you care on this great holiday. We also talk about the angst that can be common in the relationship between a mother and teenage daughter. We also recognize that not all moms have been great, or even good, to their daughters. For those who are in that situation we have a few comments in this podcast that you may connect with.

We recently received an email form a lister who requested a podcast on how someone might start trusting others even though it is difficult for them. Today Summer and I discuss some ideas that begin to answer that question. Some of the ideas that we talk about are learning to trust yourself, starting small, keeping track of trustbuilding experiences, and more. Thanks to our listener for emailing. If one of our listeners is struggling with trusting others, there are probably more. We appreciate the chance to share what we have seen work for others with you.

I just finished reading Josh Shipp's book The Teens Guide to World Domination. It is great and I highly recommend it! Today Summer and I wanted to talk about one specific part of the book... How to Dominate the Dating Scene. There is some great advice in there for the guys... but since our podcast is primarily for teen girls, we will skip that discussion today. (Guys, if you are reading this... it is worth buying the book for. I've done my own focus groups asking girls about Josh's advice and they say he is right on.)  Our discussion focuses on one quote by a man named Randy Pausch. If young girls would follow the advice in this one quote, it could change their dating relationships forever. It is interesting too that Summer and I had totally different takes on the the advice.
