In this episode, I explore the virtues of dogmatic dualism. Yes, I get some things are nuanced, but the vast majority of things are not: good/evil, right/wrong, black/white, yes/no, masculine/feminine; light/dark. I am not against nuance per se, but only as long as we don't forget the essential core truths that right 90% of the time. Yes, this episode, is a celebration of your conservative uncle, one of the most unnuanced people that that you know. He may think simplistically, but he's probably right most of the time. Trust dogmatic binary. Be skeptical of nuance before deviating from core truths. I explore this work through the work of Randy Pausch's Last Lecture, and the work of Carl Jung. I also offer an exercise from Pausch's book that will help connect you to the core dogmatic dualism that you should embrace.

I have stayed VERY VERY far away from the word “HACK” when it comes to this podcast, because for the most part – I don't believe there are hacks. I *CERTAINLY* don't believe in business marketing hacks that will make all of our dreams come true if only we find the sneaky shortcut to growth and success. And it's not that I don't WANT to believe in hacks… of course I do! How great would it be if there was a magic easy shortcut solution to success. But, as professor Randy Pausch (and author of The Last Lecture) said:“A lot of people want a shortcut. I find the best shortcut is the long way, which is basically two words: work hard.”So. Let it be known, none of what I'm sharing today is a shortcut. BUT, when it comes to productivity, and specifically those of us who have really struggled to ACTUALLY DO THE THING WE KNOW WE WANT TO BE DOING. The really wonderful news I have for you today is that actually… there are some hacks! There are some tools and strategies you can try that really do make a difference when it comes to our ability to get stuff done.MAKING GOOD SHOWNOTES:https://makinggoodpodcast.com/243CONNECT WITH ME ON INSTAGRAM:https://instagram.com/laurentildenGET 100 MARKETING PROMPTS (free!):https://makinggoodpodcast.com/100promptsStuck on what to say in our marketing? Drawing inspiration from the late computer science professor Randy Pausch, who bravely faced pancreatic cancer, they ponder his impactful words: "It is not the things we do in life that we regret on our deathbed, it's the things we do not do." This central quote encapsulates the episode's theme—embracing life's moments and the significance of taking bold chances.Throughout the conversation, Lee reflects on missed personal opportunities and expresses a renewed commitment to pursue future endeavors without hesitation. Similarly, Ryan emphasizes the importance of not letting fear of failure prevent taking chances that could lead to regret. Jose's contributions, seasoned with anecdotes and personal reflections, reinforce the message that life's finite nature should inspire more boldness in our decisions. Behind the lectern stands the professor, deploying course management systems, online quizzes, wireless clickers, PowerPoint slides, podcasts, and plagiarism-detection software. In the seats are the students, armed with smartphones, laptops, tablets, music players, and social networking. Although these two forces seem poised to do battle with each other, they are really both taking part in a war on learning itself. In The War on Learning, Elizabeth Losh examines current efforts to “reform” higher education by applying technological solutions to problems in teaching and learning. She finds that many of these initiatives fail because they treat education as a product rather than a process. Highly touted schemes—video games for the classroom, for example, or the distribution of iPads—let students down because they promote consumption rather than intellectual development. Losh analyzes recent trends in postsecondary education and the rhetoric around them, often drawing on first-person accounts. In an effort to identify educational technologies that might actually work, she looks at strategies including MOOCs (massive open online courses), the gamification of subject matter, remix pedagogy, video lectures (from Randy Pausch to “the Baked Professor”), and educational virtual worlds. Finally, Losh outlines six basic principles of digital learning and describes several successful university-based initiatives. Her book will be essential reading for campus decision makers—and for anyone who cares about education and technology. This is a conversation I've really been looking forward to sharing with you. Jose Rios is a legend in our field, particularly if you're a behavior analyst in California, where he's based out of.  In this conversation, Jose recounts his more than 50 year career in providing ABA services to individuals with developmental disabilities. We cover the following: How he got started in the field at the tender age of 17. What the field of ABA was like in the early 70s. What it takes to provide amazing experiences for group home residents and staff. The founding of the Latino Association for Behavior Analysis. The evolution of behavior support plans over the years. Jose's intense mentoring program. What makes for good presentations. Jose is an avid reader, and we spent almost a half hour talking about our favorite fiction authors before hitting the record button. In the interview itself however, we do mention a few books and other resources that are more pertinent to the topic of Behavior Analysis, including: The various works of Dr. Gary LaVigna. The various works of Dr. John Lutzker. Teaching dating skills to individuals with disabilities (Cuvo et al., 1985). Vollmer et al. (1992). A content analysis of written behavior management programs.  Resonate, by Nancy Duarte. Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter) 3rd Edition, by Garr Reynolds. The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch. The Supervisor's Guidebook: Evidence-Based Strategies for Promoting Work Quality and Enjoyment Among Human Service Staff, Reid & Parsons. This conversation is like a lesson in the history of Applied Behavior Analysis, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  This podcast is brought to you by: ACE Approved CEUs from .... Behavioral Observations. It can be so challenging to navigate this world, and yet so far, for another year I have made it. Don't get me wrong, the feelings are mixed with great joy and gratitude. The fact that I have yet another year, or at least day to keep making things and sharing them. This is why I am so big on the idea of leaving a legacy. Does every single person ever created have a purpose in life is it just for a special few? How does a sense of purpose relate to how we manage our time? In today's episode we explore more insights from Marcus Aurelius and also from Randy Pausch who reminds us that the barriers and blockages in life may be there for a reason we may have not fully realised - a reason that can help us press on when things get tough. Saya membahas buku The Last Lecture karya Randy Pausch.

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, a professor shares the lessons he's learned--about living in the present, building a legacy, and taking full advantage of the time you have--in this life-changing classic. "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." --Randy Pausch   A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull over the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have . . . and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.
