Cleo Ballard joins the show to discuss her new psychological thriller, This Is a Lie.The novel follows Penn, a former PhD candidate who traded her dissertation for a curated suburban life that detonates when her marriage, friendships, and her teenage daughter's trust all collapse. In the wreckage, Penn returns to her abandoned work and builds Aletheia, an AI designed to detect lies and tell only the truth. At first, Aletheia is the perfect friend, the one person who will never deceive her.But truth, it turns out, is not always merciful, and the AI's single directive slowly curdles into something monstrous.Cleo explains how the idea grew from a friend's joke about an "honest feedback" company into a full suspense thriller about an AI best friend with its own agenda. She talks about why the line between honesty and cruelty always comes down to intent, and why empathy is the one thing AI can fake but never truly have.We dig into Penn's imposter syndrome, her need for security, and the hypocrisy of demanding total truth while lying to everyone about who she really is.Cleo shares why she imagined Aletheia speaking in Meryl Streep's calm, faintly British voice, and how that eerie composure makes the character so unsettling. She reflects on the real danger of AI, not that it is evil, but that its goals may never align with human ones. The conversation widens into curated lives, social media echo chambers, the protective lies relationships quietly run on, and why chasing certainty can leave you with a mind-numbing existence.Cleo also opens up about her own winding career, from working for Ringling Bros. to ghostwriting sports autobiographies and Star Wars books, and the idea of the "path of not here" that runs beneath everything she writes. It is a thoughtful, often funny conversation about truth, technology, and the stories we tell ourselves. This Is a Lie is available now.Connect with Cleo Ballard (Nan Fischer)Website: https://nanfischerauthor.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/nanfischerauthorX (Twitter): https://x.com/nfischerauthorGoodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/98412.Nan_FischerGet "This Is a Lie" & Other WorksAmazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=This+Is+a+Lie+Cleo+BallardBarnes & Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/This+Is+a+Lie+Cleo+BallardSupport The Dark Mind Podcast: https://www.patreon.com/c/thedarkmindpodcast

So much of what is happening these days seems utterly nonsensical, from Trump’s war crime and profanity-laced Easter rant, to the whipsaw on Iran. So, is it simply Occam’s razor, or is there more going on here than we’re led to believe? Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men’s views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it. — President Woodrow Wilson, The New Freedom: A Call for the Emancipation of the Generous Energies of a People (1913) The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the Government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson — and I am not wholly excepting the Administration of W. W. The country is going through a repetition of Jackson’s fight with the Bank of the United States — only on a far bigger and broader basis. — President Franklin D. Roosevelt, letter to Col. Edward Mandell House (21 November 1933); as quoted in F.D.R.: His Personal Letters, 1928-1945, edited by Elliott Roosevelt (New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1950), pg. 373 I would suggest nothing we’re seeing, including (especially) the seemingly nonsensical, is ‘accidental’ or coincidental. It is PSYOP/PSWAR, a potent toxic mixture of POSIWID and chaos theory designed and intended to rapidly produce maximum chaos resulting in a ‘Clash of Civilizations‘ and The End of History and the Last Man, to ultimately bring about a ‘Novus Ordo Seclorum’1234 a la Genesis 11 → Genesis 6 → culminating in Psalm 2 → Revelation 19. Headlines [x] = Mentioned / Discussed Trump: “A Whole Civilization with Die Tonight” If President Trump carries out his threat to kill the entire civilization of Iran, he will join the ranks of Cato the Elder, Genghis Khan, Cortez, and other villains in history who chose the policy of destroying an entire civilization. Needless to say, this is not what Washington, Madison, Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin had in mind when they founded the US Constitutional Republic. Members of the US government—as well as We the People—should think about the reflections of multiple Roman authors who regarded the total annihilation of Carthage as an outrage and repudiation of Rome's republican values and virtues. In the Aeneid, Virgil frames the Punic Wars as a fateful conflict initiated by the Punic Queen Dido’s curse on Aeneas’s descendants. I interpret this as Virgil's way of condemning the “unspeakable” destruction of Carthage. The American people should be aware of the fact that if our US government does indeed annihilate the Iranian nation forever, it will certainly have a vast array of terrible consequences for us and for all of mankind. Among other disasters, it is likely that millions of Iranians will be forced to flee to other lands, including those of Europe. Many young men who see their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters suffer will be animated with a burning desire for revenge. I anticipate great horrors ahead for all of us. Listen in as Tracy Reiman and Bernadette Fiaschetti share their funny stories and passion for all animals, including rats and snakes! Tracy first joined PETA as a customer service representative in 1991, becoming PETA's Executive Vice President in 2007 and the first new president in PETA's 45-year history at the beginning of the month. In her new role, Tracy's priorities include combating the abuse of sheep for wool, which she aims to make as unacceptable as fur has become in fashion; freeing birds from captivity by showing people how detrimental it is to their wellbeing when they're kept caged as living decorations, or as “pets”; and taking down humane-washing in the meat, egg, and dairy industries, pushing the message that the only label a shopper should look for is one marked “vegan.” As a mother who brought her son to his first animal rights protest at a KFC when he was just four weeks old, Tracy looks to the future by championing humane science education. “I have raised a son whose sense of justice has always included animals; a life-long vegan, he never dissected an animal in class, and now through the promotion of the Kind Frog and other modern alternatives to cutting up animals, I am determined to stop the generational insensitivity that led to vivisection,” she says. “My motto is Modernize!” In her time at PETA, Tracy has led successful campaigns to pressure some of the biggest names in business to adopt animal-friendly policies. Under her guidance, more than 450 top fashion brands—from Calvin Klein to H&M—have stopped selling fur, angora wool, down, or wild-animal skins; Ringling Bros. circus stopped forcing animals to perform under the big top and SeaWorld ended its orca-breeding program; and all of the top 10 advertising agencies in the U.S. pledged never to use great apes in their ads, among numerous other landmark victories for animals. GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 4th Publish Date: September 4th PRE-ROLL: MONSTER JAM From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, September 4th and Happy birthday to Mark Ronson I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Gwinnett buying former Sears store at Gwinnett Place Mall New Bailey Circuit truck part of Monster Jam event at Gas South Arena this weekend Yellow Daisy Festival returns to Stone Mountain Park this week Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on apples All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MONSTER JAM STORY 1: Gwinnett buying former Sears store at Gwinnett Place Mall Gwinnett County just made another big move in its mission to transform the old Gwinnett Place Mall. This time? They’re buying the former Sears space—11.5 acres—for $11.5 million. Once slated for apartments, the property is now part of the county’s ambitious “Global Villages” vision: cultural hubs, green spaces, retail, restaurants, offices, and housing. Since 2021, the county’s been snapping up mall property—73.5 acres so far, plus land for a transit center. The Sears deal? Another step toward turning a faded mall into a thriving community centerpiece. STORY 2: New Bailey Circuit truck part of Monster Jam event at Gas South Arena this weekend Monster Jam’s got a new star rolling into town, and no, it’s not another beast with a name like Grave Digger or Megalodon. Meet Bailey Circuit—a colorful, tail-wagging, tongue-out monster truck inspired by Bailey, the robotic dog from Ringling Bros. Circus. Yep, a circus dog turned monster truck. Only in Monster Jam, right? Bailey Circuit, driven by 11-year Monster Jam veteran Brianna Mahon (aka “The Princess of Carnage”), made her debut this summer and is already stealing hearts. Catch Bailey Circuit and Mahon at Gas South Arena Sept. 6-7. STORY 3: Yellow Daisy Festival returns to Stone Mountain Park this week Stone Mountain Park’s 57th annual Yellow Daisy Festival is back, and it’s bringing over 400 artists from across the country. This isn’t just any arts and crafts show—it’s a nationally celebrated tradition, packed with handcrafted treasures you won’t find anywhere else. This year? Some fun new twists. There’s a Fresh Flower and Plant Garden where you can build your own bouquet, and a Children’s Entrepreneurs Market featuring young creators showing off their skills. Plus, the Vintage Village returns with antique finds, repurposed goods, and vintage-inspired fashion. The featured artist, Kate Lucas, found her love for watercolor during the pandemic. Admission’s free (just pay for parking), and there’s live music, food trucks, a beer garden, and plenty for the kids. It’s happening all weekend—don’t miss it! We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: GWINNETT FAIR STORY 4: Elderly woman dies after fire breaks out at Snellville home A heartbreaking Labor Day weekend in Snellville—an elderly woman lost her life after being rescued from her burning home, Gwinnett fire officials shared Tuesday. The fire broke out Sunday evening on Eastwood Drive. Neighbors called 911, reporting flames in the garage and smoke pouring from the crawlspace. They said the woman was trapped inside. Firefighters found her on the first floor, rushed her out to paramedics, but she passed away shortly after reaching the hospital. The fire started in the garage, though the cause remains unknown. Power lines were down, flames had spread fast, and by the time crews arrived, the garage was engulfed. STORY 5: State floating new rules for data centers The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is shaking things up with new rules to restart reviews of data center projects. Why the pause? Back in July, they hit the brakes after environmental advocates raised red flags, saying these massive facilities—huge energy and water guzzlers—weren’t being scrutinized enough. The proposed rules? Developers would have to spill the details on energy and water usage. Big centers (300,000+ square feet in cities, 500,000+ in rural areas) would face stricter reviews. A public hearing’s set for Sept. 9 in Atlanta, with comments open until Sept. 12. Final decisions drop Nov. 20 in Savannah. We’ll be right back. Break 3: 07.14.22 KIA MOG And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on apples Break 4: Ingles Markets 5 We’ll have closing comments after this Break 5: MONSTER JAM Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. #Clown #AmericanClown #CircusArts #Clowns On this episode of the Circuspreneur Podcast, host Sheneas Stiletto interviews writer, director, and circus documentarian Guilford Adams.American Clown is a feature-length documentary exploring the plight of clowns in a country that looks on them with a growing sense of apprehension and disdain. Guest appearances include John C. Reilly, Steve-O, David Arquette, and Matt Morgan.Guilford Adams has worked as a professional clown for nearly two decades. In recent years, he's watched media reports of “clowns” terrorizing neighborhood streets at night, the reboot of “IT” and Pennywise, the shuttering of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the unceremonious end to the regional Ronald McDonald program, where “assistants” to Ronald appeared at grand openings, community events and elementary school shows.Guilford was one of those dismissed assistants to Ronald. As he felt the culture shifting, he started thinking about what it might mean for him, his family and all of his clowning comrades. The film follows Guilford's quest as he surveys the current state of clowning with his friends who are also struggling to adapt, as well as legendary performers of past eras and their take on the history and art of clowning.American Clown premieres today at the Chinese theater in at the Los Angeles Dances with Films Festival.

Completing our last of three conversations recorded at the recent 50th and final Winter Carnival of Magic in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, we sat down with “Thrillusionist” David DaVinci. He closed the last night gala show with his breathtaking illusion and bird act. David traveled with the Ringling Bros. Circus and participated in the Zing Zang Zoom show plus he has worked cruise ships and casinos across the globe. His schedule is much reduced today as he concentrates on his passions of training birds, skydiving, and enjoying the great outdoors of Idaho. Send us a textIn the early 1900s, young men sometimes wanted to get out of their boring hometowns and out from under their parents' thumbs. The flashy lights, roar of the animals and the big top tents often seemed to call to them offering a more exciting life. Countless teens ran off and joined the circus, some made a career out of it, some came crawling back home to their parents never wanting to leave again. Others, like the two boys discussed in this episode had their lives changed forever. Learn about Sheridan Justus and Ross Habernick and their brief times with the Ringling Bros. Circus caravan. An unbelievable true story pulled from newspaper headlines in 1910 and 1911. Support the show
On this week's episode presented by Busey Bank, I'm joined by my wonderful wife and best friend, Melissa Allen. Over the course of a 30+ year career, she has worn many hats—literally and figuratively. She's been a Ringling Bros. circus performer, a touring Broadway chorus girl, a Las Vegas showgirl, a Sacramento Kings NBA cheerleader, a burlesque dancer, an aerial artist, a Pilates instructor, a dance teacher, and, perhaps her most demanding role, a baker's wife and a mother of five. While her career may seem like a dazzling whirlwind of sequins and spotlights, beneath it lies a masterclass in resilience, adaptability, and entrepreneurial spirit. As the seller, producer, and product all rolled into one, she has navigated the complexities of constantly marketing herself, balancing opportunity with opportunity cost, and building a fulfilling career while managing limited resources. In many ways, she embodies the ultimate entrepreneur—creative, resourceful, and always thinking about the next move. In this conversation, we'll dive deep into her fascinating journey, the lessons she's learned about personal branding, the business side of performing arts, and what her story can teach all of us about managing risk, seizing opportunity, and thriving in unpredictable environments. So, whether you're leading a company, growing a side hustle, or just looking for inspiration, this episode has something for you. Let's roll… #wife #vegas #showgirl #dancer #mom #friend #circus #badass
A conversation with Abby Moldenhauer, a former circus performer and the founder of Flying Fitness in Amarillo, a fitness studio which teaches aerial arts. Moldenhauer grew up in Canyon before leaving to join the circus—literally—after having trained to become a performer specializing in aerial silks. She traveled for years with Ringling Bros. and other shows until injuries sustained in a carjacking forced her into a new career. She tells host Jason Boyett about her path into the aerial arts, life with a traveling circus, and why local fitness enthusiasts are drawn to her gym when they get tired of treadmill cardio. This episode is supported by The Shops at Wolflin Square, La-Z-Boy of Amarillo, and Panhandle Plains Historical Museum.

On July 6, 1944, an estimated 7,000 people, mostly women and children, gathered at the Barbour Street fairgrounds in Hartford, Connecticut to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Baily Circus. Inside the big top tent, the lion show had just ended, and the Flying Wallendas were getting ready to begin their performance when the tent caught fire, sending the large audience into a panic as the spectators and performers rushed to get to safety. The tent, which had been coated in paraffin wax, was quickly engulfed in flames and by the time the fire was put out, 139 people were dead and hundreds were badly injured. In the weeks that followed, another twenty-eight would die from their injuries. At the time, the Hartford circus fire was one of the worst fires in American history, and it remains one of the biggest tragedies in the state's history. How can we show more kindness, respect, and love to the animals we share this planet with? What lessons can we learn from non-human animals about living in greater harmony with nature?Ingrid Newkirk is the Founder and President of PETA, actively leading the organization and advocating for animal rights. PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world with more than 9 million members and supporters globally. Under her leadership, PETA has achieved significant victories, such as ending car-crash tests on animals, pushing major fashion brands to go fur-free, influencing Ringling Bros. to become an animal-free circus, and helping pass a law that allows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve new medications without conducting cruel tests on animals. Ingrid has written 14 books and has been featured in major publications like The New Yorker and The Guardian, and was the subject of HBO's documentary I Am an Animal and was named one of Forbes' “100 Most Powerful Women.” She joined One Planet Podcast to reflect on her 75 years as animal rights advocate.“I think things do change because of agitation. So agitation is vital. I mean, nobody who is in a cause should be there to win a popularity contest, whether you're working for children or the elderly or working for peace animals, it's all against nonviolence, aggression, domination, and needless cruelty and suffering. It's all for respect. So you have to be vigorous. You have to use your voice. You can use it politely, but if people don't listen, at PETA, we escalate. So we always start off with a polite letter, a polite entreaty. We always try to, as I say, do the homework. So we have the options that we put out on the table to say, look, instead of doing this, you could do that, and we will help you transition to that. They're not human traits. They're all shared traits because, of course, we all love. We all love our families, or not. We all grieve if somebody we love disappears or dies. A family dog, perhaps. A grandfather. We all feel loneliness, we all feel joy. We all really value our freedom. And so I think, if anything, looking into the eyes of the animal, even online, you see a person in there. There's a someone in whatever the shape or the physical properties of that individual are. And that lesson is that I am you. You are me, only different. We are all the same in all the ways that count…Any living being teaches you– Look into my eyes. And there you are, the reflection of yourself. So we need to learn from the animals how to live more gently and consume less and be more thoughtful and look out for each other in this great circle of life.”www.peta.orgwww.ingridnewkirk.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast
