San Francisco's cable cars are not only the first in the world – invented here in 1873 – they are also the last. And though they travel at a mere 9.5mph, with the wind in your hair, the bells ringing and track rattling, it feels more like a roller coaster tour of the city than anything else on the road. Join us for a whirlwind journey, recorded on location, celebrating 150 years and counting of San Francisco's cable cars. As we travel, we're going to stop off at the highlights along the line, revealing the story of the city from its Gold Rush roots to the creativity and diversity that defines it to this day. We'll meet Val Lupiz, a legendary ‘gripman', or cable car operator, for a lesson on what it takes to drive an actual 150-year-old antique. We'll find a hidden music studio above a gift shop in Chinatown, and listen to a performance of a GuZheng, a more than 2,000-year-old traditional Chinese instrument. We'll eat fresh seafood in one of the oldest restaurants in Fisherman's Wharf, drink Mai Tai's during an indoor monsoon at the Tonga Room, listen to an impromptu poetry recital about cable cars, on the cable car itself, and lots more. Hi Folks,We are doing a special show on the South Pacific Punch and the movie as well. Why South Pacific? This movie back in the 50s and "Blue Hawaii" with Elvis Presley made a major influence on North America culture and international to tiki culture and Polynesian crazy!!!We talk about two cocktails for this show: South Pacific Punch and the Castaway!! Both the drinks are from the Jeff Beachbum Berry "Remixed" book. Jeff is also another influence that brought back tiki to us. These cocktails use a wide range of Caribbean islands and also classic ingredient Falernum. I still have to make mine but if you can get it in the liquor store, I recommend it as it's shelf life last longer. On "Mark's Adventures" segment: we talk about no bar!!???? Yes, we don't talk about a bar but a company that gave all those tiki bars décor we know. Oceania Arts has been around for over 50 years and by the same owners who finally hanging it up for retirement. Robert Van Oosting and LeRoy Schmaltz started carving Palm Frond masks out of their garage to sell. It grew and have supplied décor to tiki bars we know such as Trader Vic's, The Mai Kai, Don the Beachcomber, the Coco Palms in Hawaii, and The Tonga Room in San Francisco, but also Foundation Bar in Milwaukee, the Bali Hai remodel in San Diego, Hale Pele in Portland. Disneyland's Trader Sam's Bar and the Tangaroa Terrace as well as Walt Disney World. Mark has visited this location and even came back with a blow fish light (jealous!!).In "Did You Know?" segment: we go in depth the movie South Pacific. It was released in 1958…and grossed over $36 million as a musical production. The filmed featured a lot of big names at the time but one in particular: Ray Walston (Mr. hand and My Favorite Martian). It also featured Russ Brown, Tom Laughlin, Rossano Brazzi, and Ken Clark. This episode originally posted July 2015. After realizing the drink mentioned on the show, The Ladies Man was never posted on our blot we have decided to push this one out again. Hope you enjoy this trip back to 2015. There is no reason we should deny that we are nursing a hangover. Kalani and Sunshine celebrated July 4th Independence Day with cocktails, BBQ and plenty of exploding objects. Starshine joined us for the festivities but was not available to record this episode of the podcast. To soothe our heads we keep the exotica nice and light, the lights are extra dim and our cocktail is full of citrus and vitamin C. Thats how we do hangover. Join us for a quick trip through San Francisco. Smugglers Cove and Tonga Room are just two of the watering holes we managed to spend a few hours sipping rum drinks while the sounds of gay pride were all around. It was a weekend to party and the bar scene didn't disappoint.

A champagne lunch at Park House restaurant, then a stop at the "ugly house". Alison takes the Snowdonia Rail with a photographer and a Mobile Makeup Artist, for a photoshoot at the summit. Dinner at Tyddyn Llan and live music at Y Stablau Bar ends her day. It might very well be time to abandon the post-modern cynicism so many of us have and return to an earlier time. A plaid cloaked time. A time with the lights out - when it's less dangerous. Since we know this won't entertain us. This week SK and Pete thought they'd tie up some loose ends. Topics that had slipped through the cracks in the preceding episodes. Topics like welcoming our latest Patreon member (Which somehow evolved into a discussion on Enya and MTV's Real World), Grandad the Chicago lungfish and the new baby monkey at the SF Zoo (Which veered to wrestling memories and George "The Animal" Steel and the elusive Lemur/Langor/Lunger), and local want ads (Which were stretched into a discussion of Gilligan's Island, Alice and Laura Dern's mom). Then we attempted to settle into a single topic of all-you-can-eat establishments here in San Francisco. Goat Hill Pizza, the Cliff House, Club Waziema, Fogo de Chao, and the Tonga Room are discussed but this, ofcourse degenerated into an uninformed discussion about the cultures of Ethiopia, Brazil, and Polynesia. This episode contributed plenty to the cynicism of it's listeners but we're so happy because, today, we found our friends...they're in our head.
