When you're traveling, the best moments are always the ones that take you by surprise. And while we were making the Exploring San Francisco by Cable Car episode one fell into our lap. We didn't have space in the episode to include the full scene, but if you love music it's something you're going to want to hear.    But let's set the scene first ... we're in Chinatown walking through those beautiful lantern strung streets, pagodas adorned in yellow and gold, temples, and tea shops everywhere, when we stumble upon Shangri-La Gifts.    One of the owners, a young woman named Fang-Yi, is a master player of the Guzheng, a more than 2,000-year-old traditional Chinese instrument. She takes us upstairs to a secret studio above her shop where she teaches Chinese American kids this ancient art form in order to help keep the tradition alive. She introduces us to two of her students and they start to play ...This is the performance we heard. In this week's episode, we sit down with Huidi Xiang to talk about her work in our current exhibition “Neither Here Nor There” at Lydian Stater in addition to how gaming influences her work, the overlaps between digital gaming assets and NFTs, the ethics of underpaying oneself, the problems of underpaying others, repetition as a metaphor for labor, the tragedy of The Villager's Down Special Move in Super Smash Brothers, the importance of faux material in her sculptures, the impossibility of building the ideal IKEA product, and repetition as a metaphor for labor. Huidi Xiang (b. Chengdu, China) is an artist and researcher currently based in Brooklyn, New York, USA. She holds an MFA in Art from Carnegie Mellon University (2021) and a BA in Architecture and Studio Art from Rice University (2018). In her practice, Huidi makes sculptural objects, installations, and systems to examine the spatial and temporal effects of inhabiting both virtual and physical worlds in late capitalism. By reimagining and reconstructing elements from different contexts, including on- and off-line, she creates works to construct a realm situating in between, intending to articulate the emerging politics and critical issues associated with the ever-expansive merging between the physical and the virtual, the real and the simulated, and the fact and the fiction. Huidi's works have been exhibited internationally, including OCAT Biennale at OCT Art & Design Gallery, Shenzhen, China, LATITUDE Gallery in New York, USA, Contemporary Calgary in Calgary, Canada, Hive Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, China, Miller ICA in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, Center for Architecture and Design in New Orleans, LA, USA, and South London Gallery in London, UK. Description:This week's installment features the musical and poetic talents of Able Arts Work, San Diego's Service Users in their Collaborative Episode Who I Am Inside, A Tale as Old as Time.  The first piece Musical Poetry Collage was created in Music Therapy Community.  The students explored components of songs that sooth them and bring a sense of comfort.  Then, they each shared a favorite soothing song with their peers, processed verbally and selected two favorite lines that were synthesized into an original poem.  Finally, the students created an original meditative backing track using loops in Logic and recorded instruments.  If you listen carefully, you may hear familiar quotes from some of your favorite songs as well as Chinese instruments like a Dizi and Guzheng, electric and bass guitars, and an ocean disk.  The second piece is an original poem written by Service User, Sarah Shaw titled, Inside Wins.  Sarah is excited to share words that inspire others to see their full potential and embrace who they are inside.  We hope you enjoy listening and find inspiration of your own!

A martial artist who follows the code of xia is often referred to as a xiákè (俠客, literally "follower of xia") or yóuxiá (遊俠, literally "wandering xia"). In some translations, the martial artist is referred to as a "swordsman" or "swordswoman" even though they may not necessarily wield a sword.The heroes in wuxia fiction typically do not serve a lord, wield military power, or belong to the aristocratic class. Zazen is a practice that has been practiced for centuries in Japan and China. It is a way to clear one's mind and to focus on their breathing. This has been shown to have a significant effect on blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels. It is not possible to practice Zazen without sitting down, as it requires complete concentration of the body. In Zen Buddhism, Zazen takes many forms depending on the specific school of thought. In Soto Zen zazen it means sitting meditation where one sits cross-legged with their hands resting lightly on their lap, focusing on the breath going in and out through the nose while emptying one's mind of all other thoughts. In Rinzai Zen zazen it means seated meditation where one sits upright with their spine. In Zazen, participants sit for lengthy periods to try to achieve inner peace and explore the meaning of existence. Ancient Chinese philosophy has it that water has many virtues. It is an important element in all states of matter across the universe, nurturing every living thing that it comes across. In this edition, Cen Jiawei, a guzheng player with the Yuan Sha Zither Orchestra in Beijing, will be bringing us several famous classical and contemporary guzheng pieces, which portray the sounds produced by water in various scenarios. Walsh St house is the dwelling that Australian architectural giant Robin Boyd designed as his own family home. As an exemplar of modernist Australian architecture that continues to influence architectural thinking, the house has been the subject of extensive media coverage both nationally and internationally. The house remains unchanged from the time it was first designed and occupied by the Boyd Family in 1959, furnished with pieces designed by Boyd’s associates Grant Featherston, Clement Meadmore and others and then photographed by Mark Strizic. Now home of the Robin Boyd Foundation, the heritage icon provides a unique insight into Melbourne’s design leaders of the 50s and 60s.

The guzheng is plucked by the fingers with or without plectra Most modern players use plectra that are attached to up to four fingers on each hand. Ancient picks were made of mundane materials such as bamboo, bone, and animal teeth or by finer materials such as ivory, tortoiseshell, and jade. Traditional playing styles use the right hand to pluck notes and the left hand to add ornamentation such as pitch slides and vibrato by pressing the strings to the left of the movable bridges. Modern styles use both hands to play on the right side of the strings. There are many techniques used to strike notes. Being good at something is cool. Greatness seldom occurs. But mastery... most have not experienced it. My friend Wu Fei is a true virtuoso of the Guzheng, an ancient Chinese instrument with 21 strings. Her story of how her mastery was developed, what it was like being raised under the One Child Policy in China, and how hearing Jimi Hendrix for the first time as a young adult changed her life is incredible. Having over 2500-years of history, the guzheng is never too archaic to integrate into modern society. In fact, it has marvelous musical capability that it can establish a musical intercourse with western opera; it works well with ancestral and new-age genres, and it symbolizes the quintessence of eastern civilization.

In David's third week in the Orient, he learns more about the 3000-year-old guqin instrument; jams with one of the Jiangsu region's leading guzheng performers and experiences a very loud thunderstorm.

Författaren Vigdís Grímsdóttir i Reykjavik och regissören och bildkonstnären Kirsten Dehlholm i Köpenhamn hade en likartad vision: en man står i havet och dirigerar. I vilken tonart klingar en romanfigur? Hur låter ett bildkonstverk? Detta andra program i serien Klang! har undertiteln Att dirigera en ocean. Vi skall möta två konstnärer med en stark relation till musik. Författaren Vigdís Grímsdóttir i Reykjavik och regissören och bildkonstnären Kirsten Dehlholm i Köpenhamn.   -Jag såg Tjajkovskij på håll. Han var naken på överkroppen, håret drypande vått, hade en taktpinne i handen, stod mitt ute i vattnet och försökte dirigera vågorna. I Vigdís Grímsdóttirs roman Tystnaden är Tjajkovskij dirigenten. I den isländska prosakonsten existerar ofta övernaturliga inslag - en alldeles egen magiska realism där döda och levande existerar bredvid varandra. Romanen Tystnaden handlar om en liten flicka som har Tjajkovskij som sin låtsasvän. Tjajkovskij, först som liten pojke, senare som unga man, kliver in i rummet där i Reykjavik varje gång hans musik strömmar ut ur högtalarna. Den unga kvinnan Linda dansar med en ung Peter Tjajkovskij. I romanen älskar de ibland. Då transformerar Linda sitt kön och blir en ung pojke. Hon vet att Peter vill vara med pojkar. Musik betyder mycket i Vigdis Grimsdottirs liv och därför också i författarskapet. För att finna fram huvudpersonerna i sina böcker och för att förstå dem måste Vigdis Grimsdottir hitta just deras musik.   Kirsten Dehlholm ser en bild. Den påverkar henne så starkt att hon bestämmer sig för att bli konstnär. Bilden är en happening arrangerad av den polske installationskonstnären och teaterdirektören Tadeusz Kantor. Han står på en stol i havet, med ryggen mot fotografen. Hans armar är lyftade som om han dirigerar en klassisk orkester. Guzheng master Wu Fei plays live in the studio and discusses taking traditional music in new directions. She will perform at the Big Ears festival in Knoxville in 2017.

To me, it was supposed a fine day. The sunshine in May warmly embraced the earth in her arms. It was already the time when the Spring was approaching to its end and flowers were fading away; nevertheless, in the courtyard, a tung tree was still in full blossom. The light pink flowers hung on all the branches like the windbells in a dreamland, with a silky faint fragrance filled in the air all over the yard. Out with a small chair, I seated myself leisurely under the tung flowers. 我以为这是一个晴好的天气，五月的阳光热情的拥抱着大地。虽然已是春尽花残时，但院落里的一棵桐树花开的正艳。粉白的花朵如梦幻中的风铃挂满枝头，清幽的香气如丝如缕地弥漫在整个院落。我搬过一个小椅子，在桐花下闲坐。 A small breeze stole in, slightly and gently at first, with the light pink flowers flying and falling softly in the light blue sky, like the elegant melodious sound of Guzheng(a kind of Chinese traditional musical instrument), and the fragrant poetic lines, and the colurful butterflies flying and dancing. I was fascinated in the scene of the dance of the falling flowers. Only after a while, however, the wind was growing stronger, scraping and swinging the beautiful dresses of tung flowers to and fro in the air, and stirring up the fallen flowers and dust spreading all over the street. 不知什么时候起风了，开始还是细细的微风，粉白色的花朵在天空淡蓝色的素笺上轻轻飘落，感觉象典雅清悠的古筝声悠悠入耳。象清香的诗页，仿佛有彩蝶振羽飘舞。一时陶醉在这落花飞舞的情节中。但只一会儿，风就大了起来，撕扯着桐花美丽的衣裙凌乱摇摆，风搅起地上的落花和沙尘，弥漫了整个街道。Soon came down the raindrops, as big as beans, dropping onto my skin, cool and painful. I hurried back to my room and wached on the balcony. The branches were rustling in the wind and rain, and the flowers on the tree were swaying and falling in succession, which occurred to me the verse that "The wind blows the autumn leaves falling onto the ground, which again are blown up by the wind."有豆大的雨点落下来，砸在皮肤上凉凉的疼。我赶快回到房间，在阳台上观望，树枝在风雨中哗哗作响，满树的桐花晃晃荡荡，纷纷坠落。突然想起那句"风吹秋叶落地，落地风又吹起"，但此时带给我的不是那优美的意境，却是怜惜。A long time passed before the rain stopped. I walked out of my room, back to the yard, seeing fallen flowers in pieces scatter here and there. I stepped over the broken flowers lightly, when I couldn‘t help thinking of the sentimental mood of a poet in Song Dynasty , standing behind the curtain and chanting the verse:"A half mu (unit of land measure in China) of tung flowers melt a yard of the worrying rain quietly." 过了很久，雨才停了下来。我走出房间，重新回到院落。满院落花零乱，红绡香残，我轻轻地踏香走过。此时遥想宋人伫立帘后，吟诵着"桐花半亩，静销一庭愁雨"的惆怅之情，心中亦是浮想联翩。And a mass of melancholy fancy thronged my mind as well. After the baptism of wind and rain, the sky appeared cleaner. The few tenacious flowers left on the tung trees appeared brighter and more gorgeous. And the newly growing leaves now also looked even tender and greener. As the warm sunshine cast onto the earth again, I got feeling bright too. 经过风雨的洗礼，天空愈发显得纯净，满树桐花已所剩无几，但剩下的几朵顽强的花，却愈发鲜亮，新发的枝叶也更柔嫩青翠，温和的阳光又重新洒向大地。此时心情也明媚起来。 The secret of flowers, I think, is to present spring with a fragrant posture, to display her born beauty at the cost of life during each life cycle, to fade away and turn into spring mud silently when conceiving fruits, and to foster new lives with the maternal gentleness. That is why flowers will whirl down so indifferently and elegantly, and smile so peacefully and tranquilly after the wind and rain. 我想花的秘密，是要带给春一个芬芳的身姿，是要在每一个岁月轮回中，倾尽生命绽放属于她的美丽。是要在孕育果实的时刻，悄然将自己隐去，化作春泥。用母性的温柔，抚慰新的生命。所以她才会这么淡然优雅地飘落，在风雨之后静谧微笑。
