Few tiki and tropical drinks are as light, herbal, and dangerously sessionable as the Missionary's Downfall. Created by Don the Beachcomber in the 1930s, it's one of the genre's earlier recipes and one of the first cocktails to embrace the power of the blender. And it is the blender itself — and proper blending technique — that will primarily be in our crosshairs on today's episode. Here to lead us on that exploration is returning guest, VinePair Next Wave Awards Bartender of the Year (2024), and Chief Cocktail Officer at Brooklyn's Sunken Harbor Club, Garret Richard. Listen on (or read below) to discover Garret's Missionary's Downfall recipe — and don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Garret Richard's Missionary's Downfall Recipe Ingredients - ½ ounce acid-adjusted pineapple juice* or lime juice - ½ ounce rich honey syrup (about 3:1 by weight, Florida Orange Blossom or Acacia) - ½ ounce peach liqueur, such as Giffard Crème de Pêche de Vigne (from freezer) - ½ ounce RinQuinQuin Peach Aperitif (from freezer) - 1 ounce white rum, such as Probitas or Havana 3-Year (from freezer) - 60 grams chopped pineapple chunks (frozen for a day, then taken out of freezer to defrost, and strained) - 12-13 fresh mint leaves - 1 ½ cups (170 grams) crushed ice - ¼ teaspoon Xantham gum - Garnish: pineapple wedge and mint sprigs Directions 1. Add all ingredients sans ice to a blender and flash blend until fully incorporated (blend for as short a time as possible to achieve this). 2. Add ice and blend until chilled and fully incorporated (again, the shorter the better here). 3. Serve in a chilled Pearl Diver (or 10 ounce) glass and garnish with mint and pineapple wedge. *Acid Adjusted Pineapple Juice Recipe Ingredients - 3.2 grams citric acid- 2.0 grams malic acid- 100 milliliters fresh pineapple juice (strained)

Christian Zyp interviews Alex Lamb and Max Well (co-directors/co-producers) about the documentary THE DONN OF TIKI. It is the Opening Night film for CUFF.Docs on Wednesday November 20th, 2024 at 6:30pm at the Globe Cinema in Calgary. Max Well will be in attendance for a post screening Q&A.THE DONN OF TIKI is the incredulous story of Donn Beach, creator of the Tiki Bar, and perhaps the most important influencer of modern-day cocktails and bar aesthetics. Better known as "Don the Beachcomber," Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt was an American maverick famous for telling entertaining, if unverifiable, stories about his life. There are slivers of truth to his tales – a youth spent in Jamaica, running rum during prohibition, hunting down cigars and liquor for troops in World War II. By combining audio from a 1986 interview with stop-motion animation reminiscent of a 1960s Christmas special, Donn comes to life. As we learn about Donn's travels through The South Seas, bootlegging in 1920s Hollywood, scavenging for liquor in Europe during WWII, and creating authentic travel experiences in Hawaii in the 1950s, we begin to understand who he was as a person, what drove him to do the things he did, and how his influence is still felt today.www.thedonnoftiki.com/

Live from Brooklyn's Sunken Harbor Club, we proudly present: The Fog Cutter… and so much more! That's right, it's an episode of firsts and threes: the first Cocktail College recorded in front of a (sell-out) crowd; our first time featuring three guests (and audience questions); not one, not two, but three cocktails (at least one of which contains three base spirits, and a sherry float for good measure). Get ready for Garret Richard on the Fog Cutter, Scarlet Fog, and advanced cocktail techniques; Carlos Perez on his very own Brain Fog riff; and St. John Frizell on that drink's newly launched, eponymous mug — a Sunken Harbor Club first! Garret Richard's Fog Cutter Recipe Ingredients - 1 orange wheel - 1 ounce Denizen White rum - ¾ ounce brandy (Capurro Pisco) - ¼ ounce Ford's Gin - ½ ounce fresh lemon juice - 1 teaspoon Orgeat (Beachbum Berry's Latitude 29) - Lemon punch syrup (mix of oleo saccharum, fresh lemon juice, sugar, and citric acid) - Almond extract - Saline solution - Float: ½ ounce Harvey's Bristol Cream sherry Directions 1. Muddle orange wheel in a Collins glass and set aside. 2. Add rum, pisco, gin, lemon juice, orgeat, lemon punch, almond extract, and saline solution to a mixing tin. 3. Flash blend with ice. 4. Add to Collins glass with muddled orange. 5. Fill with crushed ice and top with sherry float. 6. Garnish with generous mint sprig, orchid, and serve with a straw. (Note: We plan to update this recipe with more exact quantities for some of the ingredients — stay tuned!) **Trader Vic's Fog Cutter Recipe** Ingredients - 2 ounces Puerto Rican rum - 1 ounce brandy - ½ ounce gin - 1 ounce orange juice - 2 ounces lemon juice - Float: sherry Directions 1. Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with cracked ice. 2. Shake until well chilled. 3. Pour into a tall glass with ice. 4. Top with sherry float and serve with a straw. Mark was the curator of the Honolulu Surf Museum which was located at Jimmy Buffett's at the Beachcomber, Jimmy Buffett's restaurant and bar. Mark is considered an expert on surfing history. He has lived in Hawaii since the 1970s.  Mark Fragale's surfing story began in 1962 when at the age of 12 years old he saw a surfer gliding across the water on the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of New Jersey. He was hooked and so began his lifelong love for the sport of surfing!  You know, we've got tons of very unique content just like this. We're rushing to get it all out by the end of this year. Herlinda and Bee. Kapu Bar house manager Bee Baker is our in-studio guest on Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras today. Kapu Bar has taken over the Tuttle's Drug Store location in downtown Petaluma. They have done extensive redecoration and it is a marvel to see. The first weekend they were open in January they had over 1000 people through the front door. Business has been brisk and there is a line out the door almost every day. The first use of Tiki décor was Don the Beachcomber's, which opened in Los Angeles in 1934, after Prohibition ended but well before the beginning of WWII. Tiki designs became popular in California after the War, when returning servicemen brought back more and more Polynesian-inspired designs. There have been many famous Tiki-styled restaurants and bars, which Bee describes as “escapism.” At the bar they make all of their syrups in-house from scratch. From the kitchen, they have an extensive menu that even includes Spam, and of course there is special glassware and ceramic ware to match the drinks. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. Tiki Design Kapu Bar's designer, Bamboo Ben, is the grandson of one of the head designers of the Disneyland Tiki Room, as well as the Swiss Family Robinson House and the Jungle Cruise. They have plans to adapt an outdoor area as well. Bamboo Ben's son Blake has carved Tikis out of the reclaimed wood from their outside fence. They wear “aloha” shirts and they don't spare the accessories and decorations. Here is a look at the interior, on the Kapu Bar website. "It doesn't get more West Coast than a Tiki Bar." - Herlinda They have Poke Nachos on the menu. They source the freshest Ahi they can source, which their chefs cut and dress for Poke, with all their flavors. It is one of their most popular menu items. Bee has also brought a lot of other treats, including the spicy Chinese style peanuts. They are boiled with ginger, onion, star anice, citrus peel, bay leaf and peppercorn. After boiling they are tossed in a ginger-scallion sauce, with a bit of sesame. They are tasty but messy. There is a discussion of their extensive menu which is also online, here. The Banana Split “is for the young at heart.” Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Kapu Bar is located at 132 Keller St. in Petaluma. For reservations, go to Open Table. The bar is first-come first served, with no reservations.

Damon Francis Knight was born September 19th, 1922 in Baker City, Oregon. A brave soul, Knight moved across the country to New York City when he was 17 to live in poverty in a number of shared apartments with science-fiction fans, writers and editors. He was a member of the Futurians along with CM Kornbluth, Frederic Pohl and others. His first real impact in the world of science fiction came from hisfirst review, which appeared in a fanzine, when the original version of AE Van Vogt's “The World Of A” appeared in Astounding Science Fiction magazine in 1945. By the way “The World Of A” was the first hardcover science fiction novel published after World War II in 1948.When Van Vogt revised his novel in 1970, he commented on Knight's review saying  "I foresaw a brilliant writing career for the young man who had written so poetical an attack."Damon Knight is generally acknowledged to have been the first outstanding Science Fiction critic. He wrote around 17 novels and more than 100 short stories. His work found its way to TV when the short story “To Serve Man” appeared on The Twilight Zone in 1962. It's been said that it's one of the best known and highly regarded episodes of the series. “To Serve Man” won a 50-yearRetro-Hugoin 2001 as the best short story of 1950.From Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy in December 1952 turn with me to page 76 for The Beachcomber by Damon Knight. The Beachcomber by Damon Knight. Damon Francis Knight, sci-fi fan, writer, award winner, critic and teacher died April 15th, 2002. All 27 hours for only $9.88 when you use the promo code “podcast”.When you think of science fiction the word controversy doesn't normally come to mind, but today's author stirred up more than his share of controversy in the 1940s.Born Richard Sharpe Shaver in Berwick Pennsylvania in 1907 he claimed to have worked in a factory in 1932 when a welding gun, ‘by some freak of its coil's field atunements' was allowing him to hear the thoughts of the men working around him. If that's not weird enough he also said he telepathically received record of a torture session conducted in caverns deep within the earth. When retelling the story of how he first learned of this cavern world, Shavers stories didn't remain consistent.Shaver said he quit his job and became a hobo. He was hospitalized briefly for psychiatric problems in 1934, but there does not appear to have been a clear diagnosis. For almost 10 years after that we don't know what happened to him or where he lived. Then in 1943 he wrote a letter to Amazing Stories magazine claiming to have discovered an ancient language. When the editor wrote back to him, Shaver wrote that extremely advanced prehistoric races had built cavern cities inside the Earth before leaving the Earth for another planet, but leaving some of their offspring behind. The editor of the magazine, Ray Palmer, took Shavers 10,000 word response about these cavern dwellers, rewrote the manuscript and “I Remember Lemuria!” was published in the March 1945 edition of Amazing Stories. The issue sold out and elicited quite a response. The magazine editor, Ray Palmer, said that tens of thousands of letters were sent to Amazing Stories saying that Shavers story was true. How popular was Richard S. Shaver? Well the “Shaver Mystery” as his work was known, appeared in the June 1947 issue of Amazing and the entire magazine featured his stories and only his stories. Shaver had his share of critics who were quick to point out that the author was suffering from several of the classic symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia.Today's science fiction short story was written after the “Shaver Mystery” stories had ended and contains no references to alien cave dwellers or their offspring.
