Steven Hawley is an environmental journalist who writes about rivers, dams, and the ecological impacts they have on salmonids in the American West. He is the author of Cracked: The Future of Dams in a Hot, Chaotic World (2023), Recovering a Lost River (2011), and the writer and co-producer of an award-winning documentary, Dammed to Extinction (2019). In this 100th episode of Nature Revisited, Steven walks us through the history of extensive, misguided dam building in the United States and the resulting environmental, economic, and human repercussions. Citing startling examples, he explains how the costs of maintaining a sprawling water storage system in an increasingly arid world under the ravages of climate chaos is well beyond the benefits furnished. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024  Spend Christmas at Blackwater Falls as the longest sled run on the East Coast opens for the season…treat that special someone to an elegant night out at one of West Virginia's most romantic restaurants…and the verdict is in: West Virginians prefer to decorate their homes with real Christmas trees--find out where you can choose and cut your own…on today's daily304.   #1 – From WBOY-TV – The longest sled run on the East Coast is scheduled to open for the year just in time for Christmas. The sled run at Blackwater Falls State Park is a quarter-mile long—one of the longest in the country, but the big draw is that a “wonder carpet” or small conveyer, takes sledders to the top of the hill so they don't have to walk up it. The first day the sled run will operate this season is on Saturday, Dec. 21. By that time, multiple ski slopes in the Davis area will also be open, giving adventure seeking options for winter recreation activities in Tucker County. Visit wvstateparks.com to purchase sled run tickets or reserve lodging at Blackwater Falls. Read more: https://www.wboy.com/news/tucker/east-coasts-longest-sled-run-in-west-virginia-opens-christmas-week/   #2 – From ONLY IN YOUR STATE – Heading to a warmly lit, cozy restaurant with that special someone is an amazing treat. The ambiance of a meal at an upscale restaurant just can't be beaten, and it's a wonderful way to put the spark back into a relationship.  Don't fall into the trap of saving a fancy dinner out for special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries: every day is worth celebrating with your significant other. If you're looking for the best romantic restaurants in West Virginia, check out this list of some of our favorite spots in Charleston, Huntington, Wheeling and Lost River. Bon appetit! Read more: https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/food/west-virginia/candlelit-restaurants-wv-cozy-night-out   #3 – From WBOY-TV – According to a recent survey by Online Casinos, West Virginia is one of the 32 states that prefers a real (live) Christmas tree, compared to only 18 that favor fake trees.  The lean toward the real thing is no surprise for West Virginia, considering its long history of timbering and number of Christmas tree farms. In fact, West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest supplied the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree last year, and West Virginians can cut their own tree from the Mon Forest for only $5. If you don't live near the Mon Forest, there are plenty of tree farms throughout West Virginia where you can select and cut your own tree. Check out the West Virginia Division of Forestry's 2024 guide to Choose and Cut Christmas Trees and get ready for a truly memorable holiday. New campgrounds are coming to Lost River and Cass Scenic Railroad state parks…plan a biking adventure in one of West Virginia's charming small towns…and Tu-Endie-Wei State Park is the newest location of an Instagrammable Almost Heaven swing…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Lost River State Park and Cass Scenic Railroad State Park are slated for nearly $13 million in expansions to be completed in 2025, according to West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice. Cass's new campground -- its first -- will border the Greenbrier River. The site will feature 100 campsites with water and 50-amp electrical service, two bathhouses, a check-in station, an RV dump station, and paved roads and utilities. Lost River State Park will also see significant upgrades with the addition of 35 modern campsites, each featuring water and 50-amp electrical service. The new facilities will include one bathhouse, a check-in station, an RV dump station, and paved roads and utilities. The campground projects are part of an ongoing investment in the West Virginia State Parks system. During the Justice Administration, more than $250 million in improvement projects have been completed. These communities support the sport with dedicated bike paths and trails, along with businesses and clubs that further enhance the local cycling culture.  Check out bike-friendly destinations like Shepherdstown, Davis, Fayetteville and Marlinton. Tu-Endie-Wei, which is a Wyandotte word for “point between two waters,” commemorates the frontiersmen who fought and died at the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774.  The West Virginia Department of Tourism has installed dozens of the oversized wooden swings at scenic locations throughout the state. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024. WV small businesses, here's your chance to connect to supplier opportunities at an expo hosted by MAMC and Advantage Valley…federal and state grant programs help landowners protect the Chesapeake Bay Watershed…and … is Mothman real? You be the judge!…on today's daily304. #1 – From REGISTER-HERALD – The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center and Advantage Valley will present an Industrial Supplier Expo Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon at Valley Park in Hurricane.  The expo will connect West Virginia small businesses to supplier opportunities with large industries while providing an opportunity for large companies to shorten their supply chains by sourcing goods and services locally. Owners Hope and Bev Yankey are committed to keeping it that way so native brook trout might one day thrive downstream. The conservation-minded couple turned to Trout Unlimited and its Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative for help.  Brook trout's sensitivity to water temperature and conditions make them an excellent indicator of stream health. That's why the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement made restoring brook trout a goal of the federal-state effort to clean up the Bay and its tributaries.  The work can be expensive and complicated. Fortunately, an array of federal and state grant programs exists to help cover the costs and provide technical expertise to landowners, like the Yankeys, who want to protect valuable natural resources on their property. The goal is “to regenerate and let the land come back. The farm provided a living and now it's time to give back,” Hope Yankey said.  Read more: https://www.cbf.org/blogs/save-the-bay/2024/08/keeping-west-virginias-water-wild-wooly-and-wonderful.html   #3 – From TODAY – It's a busy time to be Jeff Wamsley, the owner and creator of the world's only Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.  Most recently, the mythic Mothman creature has received its very own “Unsolved Mysteries” episode on Netflix. But the Mothman was well known long before the popular Netflix reboot came to be. Thanks to “The Mothman Prophecies” movie in 2002 starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, the phenomenon is now part of pop culture, Wamsley says.  Wamsley, who is also the author of “Mothman: Behind the Red Eyes” and co-author of “Mothman: The Facts behind the Legend” shares the Mothman's eerie origin story, which dates back to November 1966 when the Silver Bridge collapsed. Is Mothman real? Get the scoop from the Today show. And make plans to attend the annual Mothman Festival, set for Sept. 21-22 in Point Pleasant! In the 2000s, Eva Mendes was wildly considered one of the hottest up-and-coming actresses in Hollywood. Drop-dead gorgeous, with terrific acting talent to match, she started small, with a role in the Steven Seagal flick, Exit Wounds, that was looped by another actress. But, her part opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day drew a lot of attention, and soon she was everywhere. She entered the Fast & Furious franchise playing an undercover DEA agent in 2 Fast 2 Furious, a role she reprised at the end of Fast 5, becoming a fan favorite of the series many are hoping she returns to. The movie that made her a star, arguably, was her role opposite Will Smith in the romantic comedy Hitch, which was a box office smash.Meanwhile, her performances in James Gray's We Own the Night and Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans drew raves. At the same time, she also stole the show in a comedic performance opposite Will Ferrell in the Adam McKay movie, The Other Guys. In 2012, she starred opposite Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines, and the two eventually got married and started a family. Mendes' last role, to date, was in a movie Gosling directed called Lost River. Mendes, who's recently begun reappearing on talk shows, said that she opted to focus on her family, with her career taking a backseat. However, she seems open to making another movie if the right project comes along. Mendes' choice to stop making movies was her own, and in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we examine her career and potential return to the big screen.

Originally built in 1856, the bridge was heavily damaged in an August 2017 fire, and at that time, was only restored enough to make it usable. The most recent restoration project, which began in July 2022, brings the bridge back to the former glory that got it on the National Register of Historic Places. West Virginia Division of Highways crews ended up replacing most of the bridge's truss work, as well as replacing the roof and wooden siding. Now, the 140-foot bridge, which is one of the longest surviving covered bridges in West Virginia, is officially open to traffic. This is part two of a three episode arc on the Modoc War of 1872-73. With an increasing number of Euro-Americans settlers coming into the Klamath Basin astride the Oregon/California border after the end of the Civil War, tensions rose. Modoc's feared a loss of access to their homeland and it became an issue with both parties. It put increasing pressure on the Lost River band of the Modoc Tribe to remove themselves to the Klamath Reservation. Governed by two different agreements, one approved by Congress and the other not, created tension. In November 1872 the powder keg exploded when the Lost River band clashed with the U.S. Army. For our 600th show, Hoosier History Live will explore an aspect of our heritage that's, well, notorious. During the 1870s and '80s, outlaw gangs terrorized some Hoosiers, particularly merchants and farmers, in an area of southwestern Indiana sometimes known as the Lost River region. It encompasses Martin County, Orange County and parts of Dubois County. "The dynamics of the gangs ... were typically built around an individual family, often brothers or a father and his sons, with other relatives and a few local followers," says historian Randy Mills, a professor of social science at Oakland City University in southwestern Indiana. Randy Mills, who will be Nelson's guest, is working on a book about the notorious Indiana gangs of the late 19th century. They included the Archer Gang, which primarily was based in Martin County, where, according to Randy, their crimes included "burning houses, robbing neighbors and travelers alike, stealing livestock and murdering those who crossed them." Several members of the Archer Gang were lynched in 1886. During the same era, the Reeves Gang in Dubois County started with petty thefts and horse stealing, then robbed stores in small towns. The gang, which was led by two brothers, George and John Reeves, eventually murdered two deputy sheriffs. The gangs often were pursued by vigilantes, and some vigilante societies that formed to fight the outlaw gangs became criminals themselves. Called the White Caps because of their distinctive hats, these vigilante groups especially terrorized residents of Orange, Crawford and Harrison counties. According to Randy, several local political leaders became White Cap members. Randy Mills and his wife, Roxanne, were among the Hoosier History Live guests in 2017 for a show that explored Hoosier perspectives on the Vietnam War. Books written by Randy and Roxanne Mills include Summer Wind: The Road from Indiana to Xom Bung, which features letters sent by a soldier from Princeton, Ind. During the show about outlaw gangs, Randy will discuss why the criminals seemed to thrive in the Lost River region, which was isolated for much of the 19th century. Randy describes the region this way: "It is a hilly landscape of caves, sinkholes, beautiful flowing springs and curious monolith formations, such as Raven Rock and Hanging Rock." Outlaw gangs of the 19th century in Indiana also included a notorious band of brothers that Hoosier History Live explored during a show in 2018. The Reno Brothers, a gang of train robbers that primarily was based around the town of Seymour and other areas of Jackson County, made national news with their crimes.

[...] If you find meaning, purpose, and clarity in chaos, then you likely can find success.”●      “I think that there are many important elements of ethos when it comes to the guide culture and what makes a successful guide. But there are two that come to mind. One is an innate curiosity. [...] The second one is teamwork.”●      “If you can learn to face adversity in some manner, particularly in the wilderness, it will be something that becomes an ingrained lifelong process for dealing with issues through the rest of your life outside the wilderness.” Resources Mentioned:●      The Lost River by Richard Bangs●      MT Sobek●      Steller app#guide #guiding #whitewater #river #rafting #climbing #mountaineering #guidelife #tripleadertuesday #sobek #mountaintravel
