The Founders of Third Space Brewing, a thriving small business in their hometown, are Milwaukee natives with a passion for creating great beer. They first met at their third space–Camp Minikani, a summer camp located along the shores of Lake Amy Belle in Hubertus, Wisconsin. Andy Gehl, Co-founder and Director of Sales and Marketing, is a recovering attorney with a passion for craft beer. Andy does a great job heading up sales, marketing and community outreach for the brewery. Kevin Wright, Co-founder and Brewmaster, holds a certificate in brewing from the world-renowned University of California-Davis Master Brewing Program. Kevin Wright is certainly qualified as he graduated at the top of his class in 2009 before going on to win the JS Ford Award. An award bestowed each year to the person who scores the highest on the Diploma in Brewing exam, given by London's Institute of Brewing and Distilling. After graduation, Kevin spent seven years brewing award-winning beer at Hangar 24, a popular Redlands, CA brewery. Eventually moving home to partner with his Camp Minikani buddy to open Third Space Brewing. Located in an old industrial area of Milwaukee the brewery is close to the American Family Stadium, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, and also a location where their beer is sold. During the summer you will often see social media posts of their beer cans in the hands of fans attending games. Beer school came about when Kara Olds, Event Coordinator for Third Space, was talking with a coworker about the lack of accessible education on alcohol/beer in the Milwaukee area. That, combined with Kevin's wealth of beer knowledge and his love of teaching, made sense to start the Beer School for anyone wanting to learn more about beer. Kara told us that “For us, it's a great opportunity to engage with our customers and showcase interesting beer from around the state.”
Today's guest has been a bit of a ghost int he GBH machine for more than a decade - since our founding really - and he's someone I think about every time someone asks me how GBH got started - and as you'll discover shortly, he had no idea. Greg Browne was the brewer at a brewpub in Chicago's NW suburbs - a place called Mickey Finn's. He was known for brewing a hefeweizen - a recipe he inherited from his predecessor when he took over as head brewer. More importantly, for me, he was the host of a weekly Beer School at The Map Room in Chicago - a midday gathering on Saturday's where guests would enjoy some bread and cheese and learn about beers in a thematic way - and the themes were whatever happened to be on Greg's mind that week. It's an incredible memory for me - from a time when I'd only had a smattering of craft beer experiences to rely on - and I hardly considered myself a fan of beer in any particular way. It was just causal and sometimes interesting fun. Most of my bar experiencers a the time involved $1 off specials of Blue Moon and some Golden Tee. Not exactly sophisticated stuff - but it was kind of the Chicago way. Map Room - and Greg Browne's beer school painted an entirely different picture however. And I'm forever indebted to that moment when he served me my first Saison Dupont. That's the beer that inspired GBH - and Greg is the one who created that moment, unbeknownst to him. But that's not the real reason we're talking today - that's a story we could have shared at any point in in past decade really. Today I'm talking to Greg because for the first time in a long time, I saw his name pop up as part of a new brewing project called Art History, and it recently started supplying two fantastic beers to Chicago's Hopleaf Bar. As far as I know the sis the first time Hopleaf has ever had a house beer. The venerated tap list there is a target for anyone trying to make a name for themselves in Chicago's beer scene. Brewers host parties just to celebrate getting on tao there for the first time if they're lucky enough to make the list at all. So for Greg to have a new gig - and so quickly become a mainstay on that list as a pair of house beers - is an unprecedented achievement. And for this episode, I reached out to Michael Roper of Hopleaf for his perspective on all that. It was a sign for me that it was finally time to get Greg on the podcast, share this story with him, and hear so much more about his own. It takes us deep into Chicago's craft brewing past - and paints pa picture of the future that I'm very excited about.

Talking about men's health can be a difficult thing, even more so when the topic is testicular cancer, but Marc Semler and the AZ-based Blue Pint Society have been working hard to change that. Semler started BPS in 2014 and in the years since has raised thousands of dollars for the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation through events like Beer School, the 15th installment of which is coming up on October 23rd, 2021. In an effort to not drink as much and not be hungover Chip tried some nonalcoholic beer. It was decent but left much to be desired, mostly a buzz. Cern's kids have started school, so we chatted about our early years in high school and some funny stories we have. Most of the stories had to do with being clowns and doing stupid things that you would expect high school boys to do. That's all for this week and thanks for listening!
While I cover the beer and beverage alcohol industries, I started from a simple place as an enthusiast. I was excited to drink different beers, then it was fun to homebrew, and eventually write about all those experiences. But for many people - perhaps most - beer is just beer. I can't tell you how many times I've had discussions with friends and family who ask about "beer flavored beer," and they're in the majority. So, what does it mean if we get the chance to share that passion and educate others? What kind of difference does that make for them, us, and the beer industry as a whole? In this conversation, Shawna Cormier and Jess Keller Poole give us some ideas and answers. The pair are the founders of Seattle Beer School, an events and education company, as well as long-time hospitality professionals, certified experts, and more. Perhaps above all else, they're passionate about beer and what it means to people. That enthusiasm is likely to rub off as you hear them describe why it's important to share that love, how you can talk to people to get them excited about beer, and how all this may be more important than ever as the industry works to become a more welcoming and inclusive space for all. Whether we realize it or not, beer connects to many aspects of our lives outside a bar or taproom, and Shawna and Jess offer all of us an important way to explore what that means through history, appreciation, and enthusiasm.
This shortcut came about because of a simple question after we finished the interview..."How's the new job going". I'm working in influencer marketing and have been learning a lot, so it turned into a bit of a download of all the stuff I have been learning about the little social media platform called TikTok.If you aren't sure about why it's different to other platforms this should give you an intro to it, without being too much!

Trish talks to brewer, Jessica Cruzan from Deschutes Brewery in Bend. Jessica talks about growing up in Louisiana and discovering her love of beer not only through her dad, but a job she took while living in Washington, D.C. That interest led her to beer school (yes, that's a thing) and something a little unexpected -- an opportunity at one of her favorite breweries in Bend. She talks about the work that goes into making some of the most popular and best beer in the world, the challenges the Deschutes crew has faced in the pandemic, the company's philosophy behind the suds, and some of the faux pas that have happened in the brewery.

Gary is the co-founder of the brewing company with his son Jake and is also the chief of business operations. Gary had been a home brewer for many years, so he kept encouraging his son to start his own brewery. We'll learn more about the story behind True North Ale Company's success and garner Gary's best piece of advice for future brewery owners.I Built This Brewery Podcast, sponsored by the University of Vermont's Business of Craft Beer Program, is a show where brewery owners from across the country share their stories of how and why they started a brewery. Resort and second-home properties can be located anywhere! They are becoming more and more popular in small towns, as well as the coastal cities and mountains. In this episode, Holly Mabery joins Monica to talk about her own experience working with investment and second home clients in Sedona, AZ. She shares ideas for marketing, building connections with buyers, and highlighting what’s so special about your community. More and more, real estate is becoming a great leverage tool. Homeownership has expanded to where people have a second home for personal enjoyment, and also more people are choosing to invest in real estate rather than another avenue. A hybrid they are seeing more and more is when people buy a house and can use it for personal use 14 days a year and rent it out the rest of the time, and it still counts as an investment property. This trend is increasingly becoming more popular as a gateway to making memories with family and friends. The resort and second home market has shifted from the mountains or the beach to more small town, slow-paced areas. As an agent, there’s an opportunity to accent your local lifestyle that can make a huge difference in marketing. People will always need a place to live, but as agents, we can show people how to live in your market. Showcasing what you love can help build connections with clients. There are a few different options when it comes to financing for investment and second home properties. Working with a local lender is key. For second homes you’re typically looking at 20% down, and investment properties are usually 25% down plus an interest rate. Some challenges that come with investment or second homes that are being rented out is that the owner has to be available 24-hours-a-day. In many instances, you have to live within a certain distance of the property. Some unexpected costs to note could be a property manager, furniture in the unit, replacing appliances, etc. The resort/second-home certification goes through making good choices in investment properties. It allows you as the REALTOR® to become a trusted advisor to investors. You’ll get an understanding of the financing, as well, so you can help your clients make the best choice for them. Another important thing to be involved in is government in your area. Either get involved yourself or get connected with a group that shares frequent updates about what is going on in the area, so you know how to be proactive with what’s going on. If you already involved, maybe you can be that resource for your market/community. Homeownership is the biggest investment someone is going to make in their life. It’s a financial, emotional, and family investment. As REALTORS®, if we help them navigate and negotiate, it makes a huge difference. Focus on what you love about living there, and what investors can expect if they live there. Highlight local businesses and bring them to the forefront. Other resources to check out are city parks and recreation, or your county health services. Both usually have different programs depending on what’s going on. As you get to know potential clients, you can address their interests, hobbies, and concerns so you can start to assist them in feeling at ease. Holly and Monica talk about furniture in the property. When it comes to furniture in the property, best practice is to do it on a separate bill of sale. The seller needs to get very specific about what they are leaving behind. Sellers need to make sure they remove any personal and valuable items before the property goes on the market. Once the seller creates the list, it needs to be made available to potential buyers. Make sure your separate bill of sale is contingent on a close. Holly talks about some things to keep in mind when working with investment and second-home buyers. It’s important to over-communicate, especially since they may not be local. Using programs like Zoom or Google Hangout can be helpful. It also allows you to set up expectations ahead of time. Some things you want to be able to note are what potential buyers can expect to be able to do year-round in your community and what amenities they will be provided (internet service, etc). Holly has also recently started tracking direct flights and doing some reverse marketing to find your feeder markets. One of the things that Holly does is create a lifestyle map around the areas where she has potential buyers. As we start this new decade, embrace what you love about where you live and tell that story every day. Instagram is a powerful medium for advertising what’s great about where you live. Die Nachricht war eine kleine Zäsur im Berliner Bier-Betrieb: Stone Brewing gibt seine Berliner Brauerei auf. Und BrewDog übernimmt den Standort in Mariendorf. Gesagt, getan. Brandon was recently provided some feedback from Jared Truby from Cat and Cloud Coffee to help handle the pressure of starting a business. The advice was to meditate for 10-20 minutes morning and night. Brandon told this story on Instagram and received a request for caution from a social media friend. This lead to a larger discussion on the value different religions, such as Buddhism or Hinduism, can offer each other. For example, meditation is mastery of the self, which can be very helpful when living a Christian life. There are concerns though. East and West have very different world views and can cause confusion or result in a religion so watered down that it doesn't add value. The discussion is around this topic of incorporating elements, such as meditation into the Christian walk. The life lessons are geared around considering the external influence to determine if it is good, and then also considering if that external influence should be internalized and made part of who you are. For beverages, Brandon shares his love of milk in celebration of national chocolate chip cookie day and AJ tells us about his experience at Beer School 9 from Blue Pint Society. Social media today offers everybody a platform for communicating to the world. This can be positive yet also disastrous for any business. This is especially the case for a brewery that is diligent at building and maintaining their brand. One substantial misstep can lead to a torrent of bad publicity, especially if this situation is not managed effectively. In our 3/12 podcast we'll talk with Mat Medeiros from Revival Brewing located in Cranston, RI and Marcus Ohanesian from Timberyard Brewing located in East Brookfield, MA. We examine the need for a social media plan to efficiently manage a brewery's online presence and also what to do when navigating any negative social media experiences. Mat will be teaching a course next fall in the University of Vermont's new Beer School, which offers online continuing education training for staff in the beer industry. This course, “Social Media: Handling Difficult Situations (& and How to Avoid a Social Media Blow-up)” will be a 4-week online course. Today, breweries are hyper-focused on their taprooms. Serving beer directly to customers offers not only a financial advantage but also a strong connection to customers. Increasingly, taprooms are beginning to look a lot more like brewpubs with partial or full-food service. If you started out planning to run a brewery but now find yourself running a restaurant and brewery, what are the risks and rewards of operating two very different businesses? This fall UVM's new Beer School, offers online continuing education courses aimed at serving operating breweries. We will offer two courses: Brewpub/Taproom and Restaurant Planning and Maximizing Taproom Sales and Profits and the focus of today's podcast. How do you hire and build a team? How does the food menu reflect your brand and community needs? How is menu development and pricing accomplished to avoid financial losses? How can you grow or scale for the long run? Operating an on-premise retail business also involves far more than making good beer. Brewery owners must set-up taproom financial reporting systems and understand how to maximize taproom sales and track key financial numbers. Please join Kary Shumawy and David Nyhan for a discussion of how to successfully turn a taproom into a strong business asset. Please call us with your questions at 929-477-1757, or if you are unable to attend the live podcast, send us your questions ahead of time. Email me at gregory.dunkling@uvm.edu.

The boys of the Blind Pig Confessions are excited to do this special release show. We are back at Alley’s Alehouse on a very special night. The kick off to the 2018 Beer School Season, and Niko’s open stage on its new night immediately following beer school. Tex Mex, Jordan, and Griswold sit down to chat with Nick Wengler about his move to Thursdays and to get some inside information about the national act that is coming on stage. We are then joined by the lovely and Talented Mel, the manager of Alley’s and the Lead Vocalist of Red Remains. We get some more insight into what this beer school thing is all about and where we can find Red Remains. This year's beer school line up is INSANE 12 weeks of amazing brewery, beers, and of course Alley’s legendary Food and customer service. We also sit down with Fat Heads Brewery, Beer school regulars, Beer School Virgins and of course Matt Monta of the Haymakers. We talk beer, music, food, and much more. Take a listen to the show and here the amazing lineup for Beer School. We are extremely excited and proud to bring you a very special musical release. Matt Monta is allowing us the opportunity to help him release his new single “ I won’t be Scared”. We tease you at the start of the show and if you stay tuned immediately following the show you will get to hear his new single in its entirety. Here is what Matt himself had to say about this song: “As we're faced with mounting uncertainty, both individually and collectively, it's important for us not to escape or tune out, but to move ahead with dignity and poise and without fear. That's what this song is about. The track was performed by Matt Monta & the Haymakers with Savannah and Ron Freeman contributing backing vocals. Music and more can be found at www.mattmonta.com” Huge shout out to Matt Monta, Nick Wengler, Fat Heads, and Alleys Alehouse for allowing us this amazing opportunity. Cheers!!! Additional Shout Outs to: Evil Czech, Bier, FDR, Sweet Water Brewery, Sam Adams, Two Deep, 3 Wise men, Victory Brewing, New Belgium, Sun King, New Day, Center pointe, Quaff on, Scarlett Lane, Haymakers, Nikos Open Stage, Indy In-Tune, Studio Live Indy
Anyone who has even met Brian Helton knows that he is a huge advocate for education in the craft beer world. He has done many types of classes including pairings food with beer as well as sensory classes to help you become a better beer taster. This also includes Beer School which is basically a handful of breweries getting together to put on mini crash to help educate people in different areas of craft beer. Plus you get some sweet swag, get to taste awesome beers and meet some of the best people in the world. In case you haven't heard, craft beer people are the most awesome people in the world. We were lucky enough to be invited to cover this event and there was no way we were going to turn that down. It was great talking with everyone from people within the Arizona craft beer industry to home brewers looking to improve their craft to straight up beer enthusiasts. All but the first four pic compliments of Virginia from Virgin Adventures Big thanks to the participating breweries: Helton Brewing Beer Research Institute Hangar 24 12 West Video Production and most specialist shout out goes to Aaron Markus from 8 AM Films for just being awesome and creating amazing work.
