Dear Songwriter...

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 7:54

Episode Description: Dear songwriter, ever told yourself you'd work on your music after work or school, only to find yourself too drained to start? You're not alone. Many of us struggle with finding the time and energy to focus on our craft. In this episode, I share insights from the second Green Mountain Songwriting Retreat, which took place from August 21st to August 25th, 2024. Attendees discovered how to tune out distractions and immerse themselves in the songwriting process, leading to not only the creation of great songs but also a truly transformative experience.Join me, Conor Frost—a songwriter, artist, and professional songwriting mentor—as I break down the three key elements that made the retreat an optimal environment for creativity. I'll also give you tips on how to recreate this environment at home, so you can continue to grow as a songwriter.Key Takeaways:Create a Distraction-Free Environment:At the retreat, participants were encouraged to unplug from technology, allowing them to focus solely on their music.Consider finding a new, dedicated space for your songwriting at home. Temporarily abandon your phone, and immerse yourself in your creative process.Use Writing Challenges to Spark Creativity:We incorporated various songwriting prompts and challenges during the retreat, which helped attendees overcome writer's block and generate new ideas.Try Googling songwriting prompts and pick the first one that catches your eye. Don't overthink it—just go with what feels right.Build a Community:The power of community was evident during the retreat. Accountability and the presence of other talented creatives pushed everyone to elevate their game.At home, find a friend to write with or join an online community. Set up regular check-ins to share your progress and stay motivated. How to Stay Connected:If you're interested in attending a future Green Mountain Songwriting Retreat and want to qualify for early bird pricing, send me an email at info@conorfrost.com with the word “retreat.”Join my Facebook group, “The Songwriters Vault,” at conorfrost.com/enterthebatcave for more tips and to connect with like-minded songwriters. Conclusion: Remember, while we can't always attend songwriting retreats or devote entire days to our music, implementing just one of these strategies can make a significant difference in your songwriting journey. Create that space, find that time, and channel your energy into your music—you deserve it.Closing: Thanks for tuning in. I hope you found value in today's episode. Happy writing, and talk to you soon!Contact Information:Email: info@conorfrost.comWebsite: conorfrost.comFacebook Group: The Songwriters Vault - Join Here

Scaling Up Business Podcast

If you asked people to pick three or four words to describe you and your business, what would they say? Would your customers and partners recognize your clear identity, or would they stumble?   The words that you want to own in the future are the words that you invest in over time, starting now. Bill wants to be known as The Scaling Coach, and he has focused years and hours of effort on making that a reality.   The key to identifying the words that you want to own is by talking to other people about their perception of you. Try Googling your business and asking your peers. Invest in the marketing that will secure your identity in the way you want to be known. The more specific you are, the easier it will be for you to own those words.   Resources: Growth Navigator Coaching Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during registration for a discount.) #59. Why have so many mega church pastors fallen into sin and what does that have to do with us becoming healthy spiritual moms and dads?

Key topic for LK10 Leader Teams for the month of Jan. 2022. The number of gifted mega church leaders who have fallen into sin is shocking. Try Googling that sometime - there are dozens! My contention is that these leaders (almost all are men) have painful events and/or relationships, abuse in one form or another, in their past that have never been healed. Never been reframed by Jesus. As a result, the abused becomes the abusers. This same process of reframing is critical for all of us in order to become healthy spiritual mothers and fathers in the Revolution that is underway.

When I sat down with Steve Berlin, the Los Lobos sax player and de facto spokesperson, I was a little more than intrigued. To most people around the world - outside of North America anyways - Los Lobos remain the La Bamba band. How wrong we are. There is a very common thread with the artists we've had on the show - and with longevity - every one of the artists (except so far, Laura Veirs and Maximo Park) had a very big song: James, Turin Brakes, Gary Numan, KT Tunstall…But Los Lobos is the most extreme example of a longevity outfit with a big song - the band had no other hits at all. Taking nothing away from La Bamba - a fine record and a justified number one in ten countries back in 1987. But stop right there. Try Googling, as I did, “Los Lobos, greatest American rock band” and there are more than a few articles examining that hypothesis, for good reasons. Built around the soulful songs of drummer Louis Perez and lead vocal and guitar player David Hidalgo (throw in a few rollicking rockers by Cesar Rosas) Los Lobos make solid, classic Americana-rock, but from a Latin point of view - and a deep rooted connection to traditional Mexican music: cumbia, boleros and norteños. Finally, throw the city of LA into the mix and you have the Los Lobos agenda, musically speaking. It's not surprising that Los Lobos have made a record of cover versions of seminal LA songs (The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, War, Percy Mayfield) but what is surprising is how long it took to come up with the idea to do just that.“We have a sixth sense of when to do stuff, somehow the muse talks to us. It's important for us to have a boundary - an idea - not just another Los Lobos record. The main thing for us is longevity and being able to do what we do and to answer to nobody other than ourselves, we have such gratitude for that. We have no obligation other than to move forward with our music”. Now that is an agenda for lasting the distance. Yet Steve and I have fun with one idea - for Los Lobos to soundtrack a Netflix (or HBO, or AMC) production of Jaime Hernandez' genius Mexicana soap opera Love & Rockets. What a collaboration that would be.Somebody get Ted Sarandos on the line…it's Steve Berlin calling, from Los Lobos...Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

EPISODE 41: WHEN I FEEL DEFEATED   INTRO: Hello there! Today, is a solo episode. Just me, talking about my feelings of defeat. We’ve all been there, am I right? Maybe you’re there right now, listening and thinking, “is this going to be another person telling me how to not feel defeated, giving me a checklist on ways cope?” Nope. None of those. I’m just here sharing my feelings on defeat, and offering my recent viewpoint on this feeling.   And if, by chance, you feel like you’ve connected in some way on what I’m sharing, I’d love for you to take one minute to rate and review this podcast. Maybe even share it with a friend. This podcast is one way that we make our voices stronger, and to connect with those that are traveling alongside us in our crazy journey of parenting. Thanks for listening.   SEGMENT: Let’s face it, parenting is tough stuff. You can go into any bookstore or newsstand and peruse hundreds of books and magazines with “Tips on How to Be an Exemplary Parent”. Try Googling “parenting”. Have you ever tried this? Just type “parenting”. You’ll be introduced to millions of articles, studies, Amazon links, parenting blogs, you name it – everyone is trying to figure it out. Professionals are telling you the parenting style that creates the most well-adjusted children, and I even read an article recently that said for better or worse, parenting changes your child’s DNA. Think about that. It’s no wonder that we have feelings of defeat Every. Single. Day. And let’s talk about Pinterest. Have any of you tried to make these elaborate birthday cakes that have a simple 5 Steps to a Magical Creation, only to have your child ask what it is that you just created? Raise your hand…you know who you are, and I’m included.   Granted, there are days when I say to myself, and even out loud with a pat on my back, “Susan, you know what? You’re not a terrible mom. You are a downright ok-ish mom”. Did you hear that? “Ok-ish”. Why is it that we don’t allow ourselves to say that we are awesome? That we are absolutely slaying this whole parenting thing? Well, let’s talk about stress and fatigue for a hot second.   Stress and fatigue enter (and sometimes lingers) in our lives when our demands exceed the expectations and resources available to us. And let’s face it, Pinterest has not helped, and as special needs parents, we often struggle to find enough resources available to help us. It’s hard to manage a home with an increasingly amount of clutter building, a list of chores longer than the Great Wall of China, work responsibilities, holiday preparations, school functions. I’ve read blogs and watched TV shows on how to create more organization, like Tidying Up with Marie Kondo (which by the way, is she even real…is someone really THAT organized)? Something that I’ve come to realize…and just recently…is that there is no ONE cookie-cutter approach to all of it. I’m tired of trying to fit in the box that social media and TV shows tell me I need to be in in order to feel like a great mom, a worthy friend, a socially-acceptable human being. Sometimes that box just doesn’t feel right. Plus, our social norms are constantly changing, right? What Hollywood is defining as beautiful and the articles that are telling us what is right will inevitably change. For example, remember when everyone freaked out years ago trying to eliminate ALL fat from our diets. Everything on the shelves in stores turned to “Fat Free”? Now, it turns out that we actually need fat in our diets – the healthy kind, of course. I challenge you to go down that Google rabbit hole.   I tell my son all the time that we are all different, and differences aren’t bad, but beautiful. So why can’t I take these words and apply them to my own life? Why is it that I keep coming back to these socially-created definitions of perfection? It always leads me to the same abandoned house, filled with feelings of defeat. I’m so tired of it. I’m tired of even acting like I have all my stuff together…because I don’t. And I’m not afraid of admitting that to ANYONE. Maybe this is what it’s going to take to change my mindset…like a detour from the path I’ve been traveling. There will be days that are easier, and then there will be days where I feel absolutely freaked out because it’s hard, hard, hard work shaping another human being, my child, my heart, the very reason, in fact, that I feel like most days I’m still breathing.   So, let me take a look at another way of viewing the stress and feelings of defeat. What if, the whole parenting thing is not just about shaping my child, but shaping me as well? That I’m actually becoming a better woman, a better parent, just by being a parent and the challenges (and celebration) it gives. I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve given a stink eye to someone who told me “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. No one wants to hear that from someone else, but maybe I can tell myself that. The stretching and growing from parenting is actually a great thing. It’s a gift, a blessing, that my home needs me.   Let’s look at defeat as power. I think about the times, when I was a child, and even as an adult, where I failed. It did build strength. It did build character, and almost a stubbornness to overcome – to succeed and win. I come from a long line of STRONG women – women that didn’t take “no” for an answer, trail blazers in their time. They weren’t strong because they never failed. They became strong because they experienced defeat, more times, I’m sure, than they admitted. I’m woven from their cloth – a piece of their patchwork quilt.   Most of us cling to the idea that skill comes naturally. We’re born with it. Either we’re good, or not good, at something. Well, that’s simply not true. Even people that are born gifted have to work hard to hone their ability. We’re not born as parents. We have parents when we are born. These trials we experience are honing our ability to become better.   CONCLUSION: So, let’s all take the time to lift each other up, to give each other high fives, to smile as we’re passing by that person in the grocery store. We all have feelings of defeat, and we’re just honing our ability to become better. For ourselves and for each other. Thanks for taking the time to listen, and for being a part of My Autism Tribe. You all are very much appreciated. See ya next week!

I've packed in all the latest circuit hits along with classic re-works that will keep your heart pounding and the party going. I'm happy to see that many of you have been signing up for the premium content for the website. I want to address a few things because a couple of you have had some problems. First, you DO NOT have to stream or download from the Podbean website for Party Favorz. That URL is https://partyfavorz.podbean.com/ and frankly, it's not fully configurable like http://partyfavorz.com to sort and find what you're looking for. You can still use the main website to enjoy your favorite music. I've tested this out myself and it works just fine. When you click "play" or "download," it asks for your username and password. Once you're logged in, you won't have any issues. You shouldn't have to log in again unless you leave the website for an hour or longer. If you're using a smartphone, the Podbean app is excellent and also has most of your favorite podcasts as well. If you're not using the app, their website doesn't offer the kind of experience you're used to — I recommend using the main website. Someone asked about casting the music to their Bluetooth soundbar. I do it all the time. You can download the episode to your smartphone or computer and cast from there. You don't need a button on my website to do it for you. One caveat is that if you're using your laptop or desktop to cast, it must have Bluetooth capability. If not, you can cast to your TV via wi-fi though it won't sound all that great. It's not my job to provide instructions on how to do this. Every phone and computer are different. Try Googling your device on how to set that up. Podbean tracks usage and to prevent users from sharing their login credentials, it may restrict access from multiple locations. That's not me — that's them. If you've been locked out, send a support request via the contact link located at the bottom of the website. Make sure you provide the username (i.e., email address) you use to log into your account. I can send it to Podbean support to have them fix it. Frankly, from what I've seen so far — these are user errors or confusion over whether you can still use the main website. In this day and age of cheap storage solutions for your media, I'm shocked that many of you still rely on streaming from the website without downloading them first. This is something that all the major streaming platforms allow you to do so you don't suck up a lot of bandwidth and run up against your data usage from your internet or mobile provider. If you want to ensure that your favorite episodes are always there at your fingertips, I highly recommend downloading the episode and backing it up to an external device or in the cloud for easier access. Then again, that's just me so do whatever is easiest for you. I'll do my best to support any issue you may have but I have to limit it to basic things like logging in and out. There are certain things of a technical nature that you're going to have to get outside help for or look up yourself. Sorry, but I clear 60¢ per subscription. Any support beyond the confines of the actual podcast is unrealistic. That's it for this week. I've started compiling tracks for the annual Catch-Up for 2019.  For those new around here, the Catch-Up features the biggest dance-club hits of the year along with some newer ones that are expected to track well into the summer. “The more powerful application of blockchain technology will be how we predict things. Bigger than how we change money.” - Tai Lopez (click to tweet) Blockchain technology will help us do more than make money. By decentralizing the decision-making power, transparent procedures can be implemented across every industry. Cryptocurrency is just the function that incentivizes people to partake in the blockchain. But it should not be mistaken as the focus. On today’s episode of The Bitcoin Crypto Mentor Mastermind show, we are discussing the predictive power of blockchain technologies. It’s about more than making money with blockchain. Rather, we should focus on the types of benefits the technology will create for all sectors of humanity. Don’t forget! You can also listen to The Bitcoin Crypto Mentor Mastermind Show on Spotify! Click “Follow” and let me know what you think! “Blockchain will enable justice for injustice. The right people get put in prison and the right people get set free. School systems where you learn things that are going to help you in life.” - Tai Lopez (click to tweet) Points to Keep In Mind The ‘make money movement’ is a small part of what blockchain technology will provide Elon Musk’s first idea for Paypal was a cryptocurrency Augur allows you to make a predictive bet using a special token Blockchain technology makes it near impossible for people to hack things in secret Decentralizing systems spreads out the mechanics, making it harder to manipulate Blockchain is not just spreading out location; rather, worldviews, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation, etc. 3 types of artificial intelligence: cyborgs, supercomputers, and collaborative intelligence Charlie Munger says, “Beware of perverse incentives” Try Googling something like “How To Make A Million Dollars” to learn how corrupted Google’s SEO algorithm has become through paid ads Centralizing systems creates efficiencies of scale but corrupts, because those without your best interest are put in the center/positions of power The U.S. has the highest GDP, more than the next 5 ranking countries combined Blockchain technology could invert the occupation formula where consensus is reached by the people on who would make a great (insert occupation) Richard Dawkins says that organisms that can predict the future with minimal trial & error succeed This is why humans have evolved to have such big skulls Depression/sadness has a functional adaptation element, to tell your body to stop doing the thing that is making you miserable Conscientiousness is the ultimate predictor of outcomes Donate to the The Innocence Project to help undo wrongful convictions Blockchain could rupture the fabric of the criminal-justice system to cause a more just system Political voting would be tallied in real-time and discrepancies would be easily solved because of transparency Blockchain could power an intrapersonal lending system, so your peers lend you their excess money instead of banks charging $35 for $1 credit Being first to something means nothing, it’s purely luck Humans are susceptible to availability bias; you believe what’s in front of you Cryptocurrency is just the necessary function of the bigger blockchain organism People need a monetary stake to be incentivized to voice their vote/opinion
