To comply with a flurry of Executive Orders issued in January, many colleges throughout the country have been renaming, restructuring, or altogether eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programming. These DEI initiatives have been divisive for years. Their proponents see them as essential to ensuring fair treatment for minority students and rooting out prejudice in the academy. Their detractors see them as stifling free speech and academic debate. Emma Green, journalist at the New Yorker, and Eboo Patel, founder of Interfaith America, discuss the genesis of DEI, where it went wrong, and what might replace it in our search to create a flourishing multicultural society.   Links:   What Comes After D.E.I.? by Emma Green   Harvard, Public Trust, and a Warning for the Nonprofit Sector by Eboo Patel

Just over one week since Election Day, we examine how widely diverse the voting bloc that identifies as Catholic is – and how they played a role in the U.S. presidential election results. Plus, The New Yorker's Emma Green tells us about her reporting into the GOP's shifting pro-life playbook to build a new vision of conservative family policy. Correspondent Mark Irons travels to Baltimore for the U.S. Bishops' annual fall meeting to report on how the U.S. presidential election results are being closely monitored by the Church leaders. Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville speaks to us about the Synod on Synodality – and his reaction to President-elect Trump's gains with both Catholic-identifying and Hispanic voters. Correspondent Roselle Reyes checks in on restoration efforts in North Carolina following the devastation of Hurricane Helene – and how Catholic groups and volunteers are stepping up to serve. In the wake of Archbishop Justin Welby's resignation over the mishandling of abuse allegations in the Church of England – National Catholic Register's Edward Pentin explains the significance of the news and the reaction from the faithful in Britain.

The Theater Project Thinks About...

Mary Iannelli sits down with Emma Green, Head of Emma Green Casting, to discuss the role of a casting director and what up and coming actors should know about the casting process.Credits:Audio Engineer Gary GlorOne Heartbeat Away is provided to The Theater Project by Gail Lou and Damian DeSandiesReferences:Emma Green Bio:  Emma Green is a seasoned Casting Director and Development Producer. Originally from Australia, Emma forged her way into the world of Casting and Producing from humble beginnings as an eager intern with companies such as Maura Fay/Tom McSweeney (AUST) and Cast Iron Productions (USA). She has a keen eye for talent and a relentless willingness to find the right person for every role no matter how big or small. This has helped her climb the ranks from Associate to Coordinator to Producer and Director in a relatively short amount of time. She worked for several years with Fremantle Media USA- focusing on development casting needs as well as several seasons on the hit NBC show- America's Got Talent. From there Emma branched out as a Development & Casting Producer for TV and was appointed Manager for US Factual Development at Temple Street Productions, the company best known for Orphan Black, Killjoys & Million Dollar Critic. Now she is at the helm of Emma Green Casting; a boutique company that provides casting services for US and International Productions, with a specialization in foreign castings and talent for TV, Film, Commercial and New Media projects. If your audition leads to a role, depending on the type of role/production, you could be on set literally the next day, and production will expect you to have the paperwork in order. No Coogan Account, no work. This applies not only to film and TV, but also to commercials, modeling, voiceover work, etc. New York, Louisiana, and New Mexico have similar laws. The intention of the Coogan law is that a minimum of 15% of each dollar a young actor makes goes into an account that is untouchable until they turn 18. It is named after Jackie Coogan, the child star from the 1930s whose fortune was squandered by his parents

Emma Green joins us this week to talk about her diagnosis of autism as an adult and how it impacts her understanding of her eating disorder as a teen, as well as how healthism, ableism, and anti-fatness intersect. We can't talk about disordered eating and eating disorders without acknowledging healthism and ableism, and this conversation brings in both Emma's lived experience and a discussion on how to build inclusive, supportive spaces for neurodivergent folks. We discuss the connection between autism and disordered eating behaviors, and how common it is to receive a misdiagnosis. If you listened to the recent episode on OCD and eating disorders, this is a great continuation of the discussion of mental health conditions and their ties to the ED space. This was such a life-giving, healing conversation, and I so appreciate Emma's voice on the matter and her willingness to share her personal experience. This is the kind of discussion I wish younger me would have heard, and I hope that it's helpful for all of you, regardless of your lived experience. Tune in to hear more, including... I'm delighted to introduce you to my incredible guest today, Emma Green, the founder of Your CEO Mentor and an absolute powerhouse in the leadership and coaching space. We're talking today about Emma's experience building a million-dollar mastermind arm of her business. Emma's insights into creating, selling, and delivering her mastermind are invaluable, and in this episode, she walks us through the steps that led to her impressive business growth. After recognising a need to diversify the product suite in her business, Emma found my podcast and quickly signed up for The Mastermind Model. We talk about how this experience impacted the development of her mastermind and the importance of focusing on the outcomes and benefits rather than getting lost in the nuts and bolts of a mastermind program. One of the burning questions around masterminds is their profitability. Emma generously discusses the profitability of her mastermind model, breaking down the costs, highlighting the minimal overhead expenses and how a well-structured mastermind can yield a gross margin of over 50%. Emma also projects the potential for her mastermind to become a million-dollar product in the near future.A key contributor to Emma's mastermind success is her customer-centric approach. She explains the significance of tailoring the mastermind experience to her clients' needs and creating a seamless transition within her product stack. Her ability to adapt the delivery process based on feedback and evolving client requirements is a testament to her commitment to providing immense value. An element that many business owners gloss over is the importance of tailoring a mastermind to your ideal client. And because Emma did this, selling it was a no brainer. Emma shares how minimal sales and marketing efforts were needed because she already had an established client base who trusted her, knowing that anything she delivered would be worth signing up for.Emma's journey into a profitable mastermind showcases the transformative power of this business model. Her dedication to delivering value and her focus on the customer experience are key takeaways for anyone looking to venture into the world of masterminds. I know you're going to get so much value from this conversation. LINKS:Previous episode mentioned:The Timeline + Income Metrics Of How I Scaled With Masterminds (That I've Never Shared Before)Connect with Emma and Your CEO Mentor:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.com/Podcast: No Bullsh!t LeadershipLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourceomentor/Connect with Ellie: Doors are now open for The Mastermind Model. James Sweet, a professor of African history and the former president of the American Historical Association, wrote an essay last year that sparked a significant clash in the world of academia about the role of politics in history and vice versa. He argued that historians have become compromised by politics—that they begin not with the evidence but with the contemporary social-justice concern that they want to speak to, in order to go viral on Twitter. This discussion may seem niche, but it is in dialogue with a national one as politicians such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vow to remove all traces of “wokeness” from school curricula and exert control over how history is understood. Emma Green joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss her piece “The Right Side of History,” about Sweet's essay and how historians should respond to the current political moment.

The Republican Party has recently attracted an almost unprecedented number of Black candidates to its fold—more than at any time since the Reconstruction era. “In a moment where the Party . . . has really wholeheartedly embraced white-grievance politics,” Leah Wright Rigueur tells David Remnick, “they are endorsing more Black candidates than they have in the past twenty-five years.” Rigueur is a historian at Johns Hopkins University and the author of “The Loneliness of the Black Republican.” The G.O.P., she argues, is exploiting a moment when the long-standing relationship between Black Americans and the Democratic Party is weakening, and it aims to capitalize on an “everyday conservatism” among voters. “It actually makes sense that in the aftermath of Barack Obama—with Black people's levels of support and warmth for the Democratic Party in decline and the belief among a small sect of African Americans that [it] is just as racist as the Republican Party—that actually frees some people up to actually vote Republican.” Plus, the staff writer Emma Green, who covers the pro-life movement, discusses how individuals' positions seldom reflect the furious partisan divide, and she shares some nuanced sources that have informed her reporting.

Virtual Physical Therapy. It's a thing and it works. Emma Green shares with us how she has helped many people around the globe recover from injuries from sports like tennis and golf without surgery or invasive measures. Back pain? She has a program for you too. Emma found physical therapy through being a patient herself at age 13 – after the doctor told her that she needed to give up gymnastics – which she thankfully didn't have to do. She quickly realized that physical therapy was the career for her as she thoroughly enjoys helping people and solving people's health and wellness challenges, many times surprising the medical doctors by how well her clients recover. A common phrase you'll hear her say is “I love proving the doctors wrong!” when clients are told they will have to give up something they love, like soccer, running or even long walks.
