We also discussed his musical influences and some of the records that have profoundly shaped him as an artist. From personal anecdotes to his creative process with Maxïmo Park, this episode offers a deep dive into Duncan's world, both as a solo artist and a member of one of the UK's most enduring indie bands.I hope you enjoy listening to our chat as much as I enjoyed recording it. With their debut album, A Certain Trigger (2005), they quickly distinguished themselves with sharp, infectious songs, thoughtful lyrics, and lead singer Paul Smith's charismatic stage presence. Tracks like "Apply Some Pressure" and "Graffiti" became instant indie anthems, praised for their raw energy and heartfelt storytelling.Duncan Lloyd, as the band's lead guitarist and one of its primary songwriters, played a crucial role in shaping Maxïmo Park's sound. His guitar work brings an intricate, sometimes angular, quality that complements the band's emotional depth. Over the years, they've released several critically acclaimed albums, including Quicken the Heart (2009) and Too Much Information (2014), all while evolving their sound but maintaining the same passion that drew fans in from the beginning.Beyond Maxïmo Park, Duncan has explored other creative outlets, including his solo work, which showcases a more introspective side. His experiences with both the band and his solo ventures reflect the depth of his musical background and influences, spanning everything from classic rock to more experimental genres.Maxïmo Park continues to remain a vital force in the indie sceneSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/offthebeatandtrack. All the greats are mentioned, The View, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats. About Mark Cousins Mark is a Northern Irish-Scottish filmmaker and writer. His themes are the inspiring power of cinema, cities, walking, childhood, archives and recovery. At the start of his career he made TV documentaries on childhood, neo-Nazism and Mikhael Gorbachev. In the mid 90s he and the Edinburgh International Film Festival showed films in Sarajevo to support its besieged citizens. His first book was Imagining Reality: The Faber Book of Documentary (“Indispensible” - Times Literary Supplement). His 2004 book The Story of Film was published around the world. The Times called it “by some distance the best book we have read on cinema.” Its latest edition was published in October 2020. His 930 minute film, The Story of Film: An Odyssey (“The place from which all future film revisionism should begin” - New York Times), played in the major film festivals and cinemas, and has had an influence on film education. Michael Moore gave it the Stanley Kubrick Award, it won the Peabody Award, was BAFTA Scotland nominated, and received other prizes. In 2021 he added a sequel film, The Story of Film: A New Generation. It premiered as the launch film of Cannes, was called “poetry in motion” by the Hollywood Reporter, and “the soul of the festival” by Cannes director Thierry Frémaux. Empire magazine called it “a poetic opus” and it was nominated for Grierson award. Cousins' first feature documentary, The First Movie, about kids in Kurdish Iraq, won the Prix Italia. It was inspired by growing up in the Troubles in Northern Ireland and his passionate interest in the role cinema can play in kids' lives. In 2012 he was nominated for the London Awards for Art and Performance and the Screen International award. He was guest curator at the Eye Cinematheque in Amsterdam. His next feature film, What is this Film called Love?, played in 20 countries, at the ICA in London, and was nominated for Best Director by BAFTA Scotland. PJ Harvey called it “revelatory and inspiring”. The rock band Maximo Park wrote a song inspired by it. In 2013 he completed Here be Dragons, a film about the vital role of film archives, especially one in Albania. It won the main prize in the Romania Film Festival. In the same year he made A Story of Children and Film, which was in the official selection in Cannes. He curated Cinema of Childhood, a series of 17 films which toured the UK and Ireland for a year and was supported by the BFI. He received the Visionary Award in Traverse City and the Saltzgeber Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Then he made Life May Be, co-directed with Iranian filmmaker Mania Akbari, and 6 Desires, an adaptation of DH Lawrence's book Sea and Sardinia. Life May Be was noted for its feminism and innovation and was called “transcendent and extraordinarily delicate”. It won the Don Quixote prize. 6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia, in which Jarvis Cocker plays the voice of DH Lawrence, had its world premiere at the London Film Festival and its international premiere at Sundance. Cousins had his first retrospective at the Wroclaw film festival. Others have followed in London, Thessaloniki, Finland and Geneva. Cousins' The Oar and the Winnowing Fan was a takeover of the DazedDigital website. His I am Belfast was his first full feature about Northern Ireland. It was released by the BFI. Variety compared it to the great director Dziga Vertov. His BBC/BFI film Atomic, a collaboration with the band Mogwai, played in Hiroshima, near Chernobyl and Coventry Cathedral and at the Edinburgh International Festival. He curated a season of films for the Romanian Cultural Institute and made a fiction film, Stockholm My Love, (starring Neneh Cherry, released by BFI). He completed Bigger than The Shining, a secret project, showable only in underground circumstances, and wrote The Story of Looking (“Like a wise man looking at the stars”, the Guardian; “Brilliant” the New York Times). It was nominated for the Saltire Award for best non-fiction book. Cousins' The Eyes of Orson Welles world premiered in Cannes and received rave reviews. His 2 hour, four-screen Storm in My Heart is about Hollywood sexism and racism. His 14 hour film Women Make Film premiered at the Venice, Toronto and Telluride film festivals, is narrated by Jane Fonda, Sharmila Tagore, Debra Winger, Adjoa Andoh, Kerry Fox and Tilda Swinton, and is showing in many countries. The Times called it “Exquisite, emotionally resonant and intellectually unassailable. Pure poetry.” It won the European Film Academy's inaugural Innovative Storytelling award, and has led to the restoration of a series of films directed by women. Two more recent films are The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, about the legendary film producer – which premiered in Cannes 2021 and won the best documentary in Spain's Dias De Cine - and The Story of Looking, in which he filters the history of looking through his own eye operation. Time Out called it “A rich cinematic journey into the art of seeing and how it connects us with culture, ourselves and each other.” It won the Best Non-Fiction Film award at the Seville Film Festival. Cousins recently completed My Name is Alfred Hitchcock and The March on Rome, an Italian Palomar production about Mussolini and Fascism, part-shot in Cinecitta in Rome and starring Alba Rohrwacher. The latter premiered at the Venice film festival, was called “entirely arresting” by the Guardian, won the audience award for Best International Documentary in Brazil, and was nominated for a European Film Academy Award. The former premiered at the Telluride film festival. In 2022, his films were the subject of a multi screen film installation, Passé Présent Futur, at the huge Plaza cinema in Geneva, and had a retrospective at the Biograf film festival in Bologna. He premiered his first art installation, Like a Huge Scotland, at teh Fruitmarket gallery, Edinburgh, and – along with Cate Blanchette and Sarah Polley - was given the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema medal at the Telluride Film Festival. Cousins has honorary doctorates from the Universities of Edinburgh and Stirling, is Honorary Professor of film at Queen's University, was co-artistic director of Cinema China and did The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams and A Pilgrimage, with Tilda Swinton. He and Swinton also ran The 8 ½ Foundation, a two year event which created a movie birthday for children. It was nominated for the Human Rights Award. He was chair of the Belfast Film Festival and Docs Ireland. He was recently given Portugal's Aurelio de Paz dos Reis international award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema (2019), and the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Outstanding Achievement Award for his work in screen education (2020). Mark's roles in filmmaking, education and advocacy have widened and deepened with the years. He was an early adopter of small cameras and new technology to evolve a business model for filmmaking which was sustainable, international and creatively free. He has walked across Los Angeles, Belfast, Moscow, Beijing, London, Paris, Berlin, Dakar and Mexico City. He drove from Edinburgh to Mumbai, and loves night swimming. Routed in indie/rock with a smattering of blues and a hint of folk, The Jonny Phillips Trio have balanced their combined musical origins to create a sound that is familiar, but also unique. Musically guaranteed to satisfy the soul and body, some intricate songwriting will satiate the mind.Since the release of ‘Yin' in early 2022, the JP3 set straight to work on the follow-up EP ‘Yang' - out on January 13, 2023, and the opposite in every way of their debut EP.With the 'Small Cluster of Local Gigs' tour firmly locked in across the south coast to promote the release of 'Yang', the JP3 are set to lead us all to what many are calling 'The Great Balancing'.Recorded betwixt the studio and a camper van, 'Yang' brings the personable more rustic feel of life to fruition - thus restoring balance to the previous 'Yin'. Each of the 3 songs represents either the Future, Present or Past, covering themes of mental health, nostalgia, and being true to yourself.Vocals/guitar - Jonny Phillips; Bass - Kris Venzi-James; Drums - Justin YoungFFO: Kula Shaker, Maximo Park, Bastille, Del AmitriSupport the show

Paul smithPaul is the front man and songwriter of band Maximo Park their latest album reached number 2 in the charts resulting in a sell out tour. Lee Laverack has taken to stages throughout the world, in front of packed venues and stadia for more than a decade, and yet he's never had a chart hit. That's because he's the guy who sets up instruments, mops up spilt beers mid-performance and says those most famous words in the world of rock; "Check One Two". Lee joins us on Sheer Isolation this week to tell us about his typical working day, such as sightseeing at the Great Wall of China before heading to a venue to set up the band. He's worked with Trail of Dead, Sam Fender, Maximo Park and Level 42 to name a few. Lee also repairs guitars and makes custom components from his Leeds-based workshop. Our music choices this week are worlds apart; a new release from previous guest, chap-hop artist Professor Elemental, and Lee's choice is a grimy punk track from Yorkshire's Avalanche Party. Coincidentally, both acts are playing in our region in the next couple of months - although not on the same bill! Also, Kieran shows off his stash of new CDs and vinyl, including the hot-tipped new album from Wet Leg.

When I sat down with Steve Berlin, the Los Lobos sax player and de facto spokesperson, I was a little more than intrigued. To most people around the world - outside of North America anyways - Los Lobos remain the La Bamba band. How wrong we are. There is a very common thread with the artists we've had on the show - and with longevity - every one of the artists (except so far, Laura Veirs and Maximo Park) had a very big song: James, Turin Brakes, Gary Numan, KT Tunstall…But Los Lobos is the most extreme example of a longevity outfit with a big song - the band had no other hits at all. Taking nothing away from La Bamba - a fine record and a justified number one in ten countries back in 1987. But stop right there. Try Googling, as I did, “Los Lobos, greatest American rock band” and there are more than a few articles examining that hypothesis, for good reasons. Built around the soulful songs of drummer Louis Perez and lead vocal and guitar player David Hidalgo (throw in a few rollicking rockers by Cesar Rosas) Los Lobos make solid, classic Americana-rock, but from a Latin point of view - and a deep rooted connection to traditional Mexican music: cumbia, boleros and norteños. Finally, throw the city of LA into the mix and you have the Los Lobos agenda, musically speaking. It's not surprising that Los Lobos have made a record of cover versions of seminal LA songs (The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, War, Percy Mayfield) but what is surprising is how long it took to come up with the idea to do just that.“We have a sixth sense of when to do stuff, somehow the muse talks to us. It's important for us to have a boundary - an idea - not just another Los Lobos record. The main thing for us is longevity and being able to do what we do and to answer to nobody other than ourselves, we have such gratitude for that. We have no obligation other than to move forward with our music”. Now that is an agenda for lasting the distance. Yet Steve and I have fun with one idea - for Los Lobos to soundtrack a Netflix (or HBO, or AMC) production of Jaime Hernandez' genius Mexicana soap opera Love & Rockets. What a collaboration that would be.Somebody get Ted Sarandos on the line…it's Steve Berlin calling, from Los Lobos...Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)
Music critics have tried to classify the music made by North East England's Maximo Park for the past two decades, eventually converging on the term ‘art pop'. Yet Paul Smith, the band's singer and main co-songwriter (with guitarist Duncan Lloyd) describes their music thus as: “Odd but still pop music. Weird but anthemic. Music with a literary influence but also immediate - in some ways primitive - music that tries to slap you in the face a little bit, but twangs its way back to being pop. We try to make it accessible, if only to ourselves”. Only Smith could describe Maximo Park's music in that way and it's perfect. No wonder perhaps, since he has practiced since the band's early days when Smith wrote his own marketing copy for early gigs (‘unruly pop' was one elevator pitch from Maximo's early days). With his art school background and literary leanings Paul Smith can express himself through music more than most - the thinking person's pop lyricist if you will. While I worry that Maximo Park may be limiting their audience to the world's intellectually curious (and possibly Northern sympathisers), the band's most recent album ‘Nature Always Wins' was a number two charting record. While some of the band's previous albums have been statements of feeling - often political or raging against the machine in some way - their most recent outing seems more expansive and personal at the same time, while musically melding all their influences and styles into something of the perfect embodiment of Smith's own definition. While Smith has worn his emotions on his sleeve lyrically before, Nature Always Wins has seen him hone the craft but be more pragmatic too. There might not have been a better song about the parental relationship than ‘Versions Of You', nor indeed ‘Baby, Sleep'. To say they are both great examples of parent pop would just add more Maximo music theory into the mix! After two decades on the British pop scene, Maximo Park is very much evolving. The band has been brave enough to step outside their trademark melodic hooks and catchy choruses to make a song like ‘Child Of The Flatlands' (let alone make it the album's lead single, something that brought to my mind The Police and their 1981 gloomy lead single ‘Invisible Sun'). The song is a step away from the emotional yearning or intellectual playfulness of previous singles to something more personal, reflective and deeper. The song was inspired by a walk Paul Smith took on the North East's industrial path. That bleak, abandoned beauty of the industrial wastes close to their homeland has inspired one of their best ever songs. When it comes to longevity, the band has stuck to the art and put its trust in partners (Prolifica and PIAS these days) to get their records to public, yet the desire to be accessible has always been there. From Paul Smith's point of view, gratitude to the early days of decent record company advances and tour support (WARP records in those days) allowed the band to simply focus on the music, song-by-song, album-by-album and tour-by-tour. A Northern work ethic combined with the art school sensibilities hasn't done them any harm over the years. However the modern way is a necessity too: hence in 2021 a YouTube Premier of Nature Always Wins, presence on socials, playlist meetings and radio edits. After all, in Paul's own words “We were lucky to be in the spotlight and over the years, the light may brighten or dim, but we've still managed to stay in it. We're not daft”.Humble to the last and doing just fine. It won't be long before National Treasure status is suitably assigned. Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)
A sombre start to the show this week as, after a brief battle with bile duct cancer, Entombed A.D. vocalist LG Petrov has passed away at the age of 49. Remfry and Steve pay tribute to a man who has influenced countless bands across the extreme world. RIP LG. In other news, Kreator are going to be headlining Bloodstock Festival this year (if it goes ahead) replacing Mercyful Fate, Architects secured a No.1 album on the UK Official Album Charts and, bizarrely, Maroon 5's Adam Levine has claimed that there are no bands anymore ... The North East of England's Case for Culture is a bold plan to raise £300 million for art projects. Instead of being an adjunct to development culture is seen as the key to the region's redevelopment. But only a few years ago Newcastle cut its arts budget entirely. Organisations are exploring new ways of working. Jim Beirne of Live Theatre takes John Wilson to the pub the theatre runs, the profits of which pay for a new play every year. It also owns restaurants and prime office space, to fund its theatre and outreach projects. The Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell has just launched a new organisation, Magnetic North East, to foster the identity, music and traditions of the North East. It has released an album of songs and tunes, new and old, about the River Tyne, by artists ranging from Jimmy Nail to the Unthanks. Last Friday it held a grand concert in the region's village hall - Auditorium One of The Sage, featuring famous North East artists such as Paul Smith of the band Maximo Park, young folk musicians and a host of children giving a world premiere of a work by David Almond.Kathryn Tickell, John Mowbray - the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, and a prime mover in the Case for Culture, David Almond, who wrote Skellig, the Olivier Award winning playwright, Shelagh Stephenson, whose new play is set in her hometown of Tynemouth, all contribute to John Wilson's exploration, as he rambles around Newcastle, of the role of art in the regeneration of the North East of England.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May.
