Your hosts journey farther into the center of the Discworld with “The Fifth Elephant” by Terry Pratchett. Elephants feature very little in this conversation, and indeed, this book. But they DO talk about poor husbanding played for laughs, the true introduction of the Igor family, and Uberwald from the Witches' vs Sam Vimes's perspectives. This episode also features a Words are Cool.Find us on discord: https://discord.gg/dpNHTWVu6b or support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/fictionfanspodThanks to the following musicians for the use of their songs:- Amarià for the use of “Sérénade à Notre Dame de Paris”- Josh Woodward for the use of “Electric Sunrise”Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License
The Fifth Elephant is a pivotal novel in the Discworld series. While Sir Terry lightens up (slightly) on the Hammer Horror monsters of Uberwald from Carpe Jugulum, he also retools them into very clear political allegories. It is a standout among the 41 novels--so much track is laid for the future as the author breaks Ankh-Morpork out of medieval stasis. And you may never look at Carrot the same way again. We are delighted to be joined by Kat Kuhl, a podcaster and creator we all were listening to well before we even had the notion that we could do this ourselves. Why did Sir Terry give the Disc's version of Transylvania a German name? The issue came up in a discussion on our Discord server, and I'm sharing what I learned from that discussion with our listeners. What we learn is that Sir Terry was well-versed in European history and an excellent linguist as well. That shouldn't surprise anyone who's read Monstrous Regiment, or Raising Steam, in particular. I say “in particular” because many of the Lancre books reference Uberwald, and Moist von Lipwig (Going Postal, et al.) hails from there. There's a big bilingual pun at the heart of it all, in fact. Great stuff, but as usual if you don't get the pun it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book(s). Uberwald is a cool name for a place with vampires, werewolves, and Igors in it, after all. Many thanks to Bas and Malocaptain, who participated in the above-referenced discussion on Discord, and thus enlightened us about another STP pune, or play on words. If you have thoughts about this experiment in three-minute podcasting, please shoot me an email at randy@mindkindle.net. I'd love to hear from you; I will answer you; and if you are a first-time emailer I'll include a recording of the Clacks episode with my reply. Only Vimes could go to Uberwald.
(with apologies to Harlan Ellison)In which we take a look at three of Ankh-Morpork's lesser-known guilds, followed by a consideration of the two best-known minority members of the City Watch: Carrot Ironfounderson the Dwarf, and Angua von Uberwald the werewolf. And yes, I know you could make a good case for Detritus. And yes, Angua is not widely known to be a werewolf. Except to us, of course. Digging up an old script at the Cabin In The Woods, Cian addresses an old topic, a suitably spooky and Gothic one for an unseasonably cold summer’s evening: the Uberwald, the mythical imaginary version of Central and Eastern Europe where Gothic tales of the macabre traditionally take place. On this journey we take on the Fighting Fantasy books, The White Wolf Of The Harz Mountains, Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, and of course Dracula. Grab your torch, pitchfork, and a can of Nightcrawler milk stout and meet me at the castle as we explore the history of this influential idea. Joining me for this episode via online chat is the lovely speculative fiction author Samantha Marshall! Samantha has written three books across two series, Aislinn's Shadow and Tobias' Spark in The Kin Chronicles and Sorcery and Stardust is the first in The Weaver's War series. If you love action packed, shape-shifting, strong characters in an Australian (and space in The Weaver's War) setting then do yourself a favour and check out Samantha's books! Samantha chatted with me about writing believable characters, our mutual love of hard SF and also chose two of her favourite books to pair with delicious elixirs! The pairings: Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh (#13 in the Psy-Changeling series) Vasic is an assassin and a soldier. His soul is drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he's done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life. Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Vasic. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she'll fight for her people, and for Vasic who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy's fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness… Samantha says this is a meaty plot, layered, with a lovely romantic storyline, a good comfort read which would go well with a hot chocolate with a dash of caramel syrup and a chocolate mud cake as it is warm and snuggly. The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (Discworld #24) They say that diplomacy is a gentle art. That its finest practitioners are subtle, sophisticated individuals for whom nuance and subtext are meat and drink. And that mastering it is a lifetime's work. But you do need a certain inclination in that direction. It's not something you can just pick up on the job. Sam Vimes is a man on the run. Yesterday he was a Duke, a Chief of Police and the Ambassador to the mysterious, fat-rich county of Uberwald. Now he has nothing but his native wit and the gloomy trousers of Uncle Vanya (don't ask). It's snowing. It's freezing. And if he can't make it through the forest to civilisation there's going to be a terrible war. But there are monsters on his trail. They're bright. They're fast. They're werewolves - and they're catching up. Samantha would pair this fun, dry, layered and salty read with a sweet moscato and antipasto platter to cut through the bitey-ness!
We begin this week with a consideration of some of the social clubs of Ankh-Morpork, and proceed through a memo about dragon infestations on the Grand Trunk's towers in Hergen, to an appreciation of the economies of areas outside the confines of Ankh-Morpork, with special attention to both Uberwald's unusual exports, and to the Sto Plains and the most famous product of that region. There's a reason it's referred to as the “Cabbage Bowl of the Disc.”This week's contest quote: “To look at Fred Colon you'd see a man who might well, if he fell over a cliff, have to stop and ask for directions on the way down.” Is that quote from Thud, Jingo, or Night Watch? E-mail your answer (or guess) to me at randy@mindkindle.net. The listener with the most correct answers on the season will win the Paul Kidby line drawing depicting the Disc from above. Remember, just for sending me an email, your name will be entered in the pool for the drawing of the second of the three Paul Kidby drawings being gnomishly colored as prizes for season 4: to wit, The Librarian in the moments just after his magical transformation. If you join the Portal's Discord server by the end of season 4, you will automatically be eligible for a chance to win the third colored Kidby, which depicts The Fresh Start Club marching in Ankh-Morpork. Reg Shoe is leading his cohorts, carrying a sign that reads “Undead, yes. Unperson, no.” Reg is carrying the sign. Not his cohorts. That is, his cohorts aren't carrying it. But Reg isn't carrying his cohorts, either. The Discord server link is https://discord.gg/K9s6BSW. Also, remember to come take a look at the Portal's Patreon page, at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21210045where there is some nifty free content, and where you can also become a supporter of the show. The Portal continues to exist because of your generosity. As always you can reach me at randy@mindkindle.net, and remember you can find the Portal blog, Gnomic Musings, at https://mindkindle.net/gnomic-musings-the-discworld-portal-blog/.As usual, no animals, Ankh-Morpork merchants, dragons, or even students were harmed in the production of this show. Remember only you can perform Random Acts of Kindness. As always, this episode is dedicated to the memory of Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE. Chelonian mobile.
The fifth installment of our Remedial Readlong has arrived. Join us as we venture out of the familiar confines of Ankh-Morpork and into the wild unknowns of Uberwald, full of waring races, lessons on the fat economy, and existential dread caused by false binaries. Talking Points: Pratchett doing Pratchett things, aka sliding in deep psychological questions amid Jokes Galore; how characters are revealed once taken out of their usual environment; the importance of varied female characters; the comfort of seeing love in middle age; the false dichotomies that plague society; how things become things; the fury of good men; and, hey, maybe we don't need to become what we were made to be.

The third annual Smashtoberfest kicks off with a growl and a howl as four fuzzy fighters fling themselves into a ferocious fracas filled with flying fur, fearsome fangs, and of course, the full moon! Yes, it’s the werewolf war we’ve all been waiting for, a bestial battle between the most legendary of lycanthropes — or at least, our favorites! Lucian, the lycan lord of the Underworld who morphs into a horndog far more often than once per month; Angua von Uberwald, sexy-but-deadly scourge of Discworld criminals; John Talbain, Darkstalkers’ token werewolf/demon/dragon/kung-fu master/sorcerer; and Scott Howard, high school basketball player, who is simultaneously a teen and a wolf! Which transformation sensation will win this battle for domination? And more importantly, which of them will fulfill the bizarre conditions laid out by Miles in yet another fit of unconscionable narrative madness? Also in this episode: Dan deadpans “Werewolves of London,” MeganBob weaponizes romance, Claire is all about that silky werewolf hair, Kit pulls a surprising number of arguments directly out of her butt (one of which actually works, kind of) and...seriously, Miles is just the worst, you guys.

Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Steve watch Ridley Scott's The Fifth Elephant with Harrison Ford as Vimes, Rutgar Hauer as Wolfgang and, eh, Imelda Staunton as Lady Margolotta. Well, not quite, but have a listen and you'll see what we're getting at here. We went to Uberwald expecting fat and uncovered a gem instead.
