If/Then: Research findings to help us navigate complex issues in business, leadership, and society
Chad Jones, a professor of economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business, recently published a paper, “AI and Our Economic Future.” Using more than 100 years of economic data, he modelled several potential AI-infused economic futures we may experience. These include the good (abundance, we never work again), the not-so-bad (business more or less as usual), and the ugly (a superintelligence that turns on us, among other catastrophic options). Cheery stuff, Jones acknowledges, but essential to face.“I think the ability for an AI to do everything on a computer that the best software engineer can do, that seems like it's either here now or will be here within five years easily,” Jones says. “Hacking the electric grid, hacking the financial system, these kinds of scenarios are things that we definitely have to worry about. The good news is, I think if we get through that, the ability of AI to transform the economy for good, it is really there and present. And, that would be a very great and bright future.”Related Content:Chad Jones faculty profileWhat's the Price Tag for Preventing an AI Apocalypse? At What Point Do We Decide AI's Risks Outweigh Its Promise? The American Robin and the Baltimore Oriole both have cheery, upbeat songs. At first, you might think there's no way to tell these two singers apart. But there are a couple of differences. American Robins usually have a longer song, while Baltimore Orioles usually stop after a phrase or two. Plus, Baltimore Orioles sound sweeter and more melodic than American Robins, who can come across a little screechy at times. Every Wednesday, we share our thoughts on a newer entertainment property. Right now, we're watching A Man on the Inside. While this week's episode did return to the mystery ostensibly at the heart of the show (and end on a cliffhanger, of course), it was still mostly about the melancholies of aging, with a hefty side of parent-child conflict. Cheery!Next Wednesday, we'll watch the season 1 finale, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold." We'll be back tomorrow with our weekly roundup.

I had some knock down drag out arguments with God. ‘Where's my husband? Everyone else is married.' That's when I had two dreams about my future husband. ---------- Hi! Trapper Jack here. I remember reading a much-publicized Newsweek article, almost 20 years ago, that said single women over 40 were more likely to be killed by a terrorist then to find a mate. Cheery thought, yes? Fortunately, it was nonsense, but caught on as a hapless truth of a middle-aged life. Question… Did you pray to have God provide your spouse? Did you pray after marrying the ‘wrong' one? Did you receive a sign that your mate was on the way. In other words, was God invited into the discussion? Love conquers all in this podcast episode as Jennifer finally had her marriage prayers answered at age 46. Vickie waited eleven years for the guy to show up that she had seen in a vision. Gina was apparently married to the wrong man for 25 years. Miraculously, a pilgrimage Gina and her husband made to Medjugorje had Gina asking her newly converted fellow, ‘who are you and what did you do with my husband?' These three stories would fall under the category of, ‘with God, all things are possible.' Enjoy the podcast! ---------- We Would Like You to Share Your Story If you have a Touched by Heaven moment that you would like to share with Trapper, please leave us a note at https://touchedbyheaven.net/contact Our listeners look forward to hearing about life-changing encounters and miraculous stories every week. “[...] The United States started to heavily invest in subsidizing growing wheat for exporting purposes. That resulted in flooding international markets, including Jordan's markets. Cheap American wheat left many of the small-scale farmers unable to compete under record prices.”In this episode, we welcome Lama Khatieb, co-founder of Zikra for Popular Learning: a Jordan-based collective that aims to empower community members to revalue their identity and culture, through the cultivation and sharing of their local and traditional knowledge. We visit themes of agricultural interdependence in relation to Jordan's history of wheat and bread production, how small grassroots initiatives are taking matters of food sovereignty into their own (literal) hands, and more.Lama endeavors to draw the richness of village life and local harvesting practices to our attention.
