Hello Friends! This week we're back and talking about Hungerstone by Kat Dunn! We're talking vampires in the 19th century, horrible husbands and workers rights in factories? Join us as while we talk about this new retelling of the classic sapphic vampire tale! Book description below Theme by Man with Roses Lenore is the wife of steel magnate Henry, but ten years into their marriage, the relationship has soured and no child has arrived to fill the distance growing between them. Henry's ambitions take them out of London and to the imposing Nethershaw manor in the countryside, where Henry aims to host a hunt with society's finest. Lenore keeps a terrible secret from the last time her husband hunted, and though they never speak of it, it haunts their marriage to this day. The preparations for the event take a turn when a carriage accident near their remote home brings the mysterious Carmilla into Lenore's life. Carmilla who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night; Carmilla who stirs up a hunger deep within Lenore. Soon girls from local villages begin to fall sick before being consumed by a bloody hunger. Torn between regaining her husband's affection and Carmilla's ever-growing presence, Lenore begins to unravel her past and in doing so, uncovers a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .

Wildly, it's becoming a bit of tradition to see out the end of the season with a podcast episode dedicated to speaking to an author and Season 10 saw us speak to the wonderfully lovely and very smart Kat Dunn, the author of ‘Hungerstone', ‘Bitterthorn' and the ‘Battalion of the Dead' trilogy. It was ‘Hungerstone' that captured us and we had so many things to discuss about the Gothic, dark academia, women and the wonderful ‘Hungerstone' which you can learn about right here:FOR WHAT DO YOU HUNGER . . . ?Lenore is the wife of steel magnate Henry, but ten years into their marriage the relationship has soured, and no child has arrived to fill the distance growing between them. Henry's ambitions take them from London to the Peak District, to the remote, imposing Nethershaw estate, where he plans to host a hunting party. Lenore must work to restore the crumbling house and ready it for Henry's guests - their future depends on it.But as the couple travel through the bleak countryside, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into Lenore's life. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night, Carmilla who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger . . .As the day of the hunt draws closer, Lenore begins to unravel, questioning the role she has been playing all these years. Torn between regaining her husband's affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .Set against the violent wilderness of the Peaks and the uncontrolled appetite of the Industrial Revolution, HUNGERSTONE is a compulsive sapphic reworking of CARMILLA, the book that inspired DRACULA: a captivating story of appetite and desire. With influences of the Gothic and inspiration from a classic vampire tale, ‘Hungerstone' was something we absolutely had to read for the podcast (you can listen to the episode here) and we were so excited to get to speak to Kat herself.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 365 - Vampire BridesLet's jump into Bram Stoker's 1897 Gothic novel - Dracula.  Now the character of Count Dracula draws from  draws from historical figures, folklore, and literary innovation, and is widely believed to be inspired by Vlad III Dracula (Vlad the Impaler), a 15th-century Wallachian prince known for his brutal tactics against Ottoman invaders.  The name "Dracula" derives from Vlad II Dracul, Vlad III's father, who belonged to the Order of the Dragon (Dracul meaning "dragon" or "devil" in Romanian). Now Bram Stoker - though we don't have any solid proof of this - likely encountered the name of Vlad the impaler - the 15th century Wallachian prince known for his brutal tactics against Ottoman invaders - in his research for his novel, but there is no proof that Stoker's modeled the Count directly on him. Scholars note Stoker's notes mention neither Vlad nor Transylvanian history in depth. He may have just liked the sound of the name.In fact, Stoker blended vampire folklore with Gothic tropes, possibly inspired by actors Sir Henry Irving (for Dracula's aristocratic demeanor) and Jacques Damala. Many scholars believe he lesbian vampire tale Carmilla (1872) also influenced the novel's tone.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

This is their first installment in the Minor Threats Universe! We dig into their issue, their new characters, and so much more in our extremely fun chat. Oh also, Bendis talks about the time he signed a living breathing dog, but he had NOTHING to do with the CGC grading! WELCOME TO TWILIGHT is the first anthology series from the world of Minor Threats that lines up absolute superstar teams to tell stories set through the Minor Threats Universe. In Issue 2, A brand-new character so dangerous she was never spoken of until now. Find out her connections to the past and how they're gonna affect the future of the city. Co-created by the creator of the Peabody-winning Jessica Jones and the Bram Stoker (Not Stroker, that's a very different and much sexier award show which we talk about) award-winning co-creator of Carmilla, Soo Lee! Soo Lee talks about the design of the new character Dokkaebi with her own heritage and anime influences. As someone who is an expert on the Minor Threats universe, she is my favorite addition since Crab Louie. She fits so well, and I cannot wait to see where she goes from this absolutely STELLAR introduction WELCOME TO TWILIGHT. Bendis discusses his return not only to writing cape comics but also to writing comics in a shared space like this. He discusses how inspiring the duo of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum is as someone who loves collaborating with people. We all spend a lot of time gushing over Minor Threats, and I am not sorry about it. If you aren't reading the Minor Threats line... You're missing out on the absolute ultimate thing in comics.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 345 - Challenging Male AuthorityWell, I had planned for the previous episode to be the last one where I dealt with Carmilla - but I soon found out that the work was easy to get into, but hard to get out of.  So what follows is another - and hopefully the last - episode regarding Carmilla. You see, ”Carmilla" focuses more on psychological terror and emotional entanglement rather than physical violence, creating a more nuanced and unsettling atmosphere that can really stick with you.As mentioned in the previous episode, the novella is notable for its portrayal of same-sex desire, with Carmilla expressing romantic and sexual interest in her female victims. This queer subtext was groundbreaking for its time.Carmilla also exhibits some unique traits compared to other literary vampires. She can move about during daylight hours, though she has nocturnal habits.  And unlike some vampires who prey indiscriminately, Carmilla becomes emotionally involved with a select few of her victims, adding depth to her character. The novella incorporates classic Gothic fiction elements, including a supernatural figure, a dark castle setting, and an ominous atmosphere.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - This is episode 345 - Stirring Sexual DesireI was looking at the podcast episodes I have done, and realized that I had written three or more episodes for each subject.  But I only did two for Carmilla, and have come to realize that the narrative does deserve more attention.  You see, there is no question that Carmilla has lesbian/homoerotic undertones that were groundbreaking for its time.  Being a gay male, I might not be the ideal person to speak to the lesbian subtext, but I can certainly give it a try.The story features several scenes of physical closeness between a young woman named Laura and a female vampire named Carmilla, including embraces, caresses, and even Carmilla fondling Laura in bed. These interactions are described in sensual terms that suggest a romantic and sexual attraction. The relationship between the two women is characterized by intense emotions, possessiveness, and a deep, almost obsessive connection that goes beyond typical friendship.Carmilla is one of the early works of vampire fiction, definitely predating Bram Stoker's “Dracula."  The story is narrated by Laura, a young woman who becomes the target of a female vampire named Carmilla.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

It was like the ardor of a lover; it embarrassed me; it was hateful and yet overpowering; and with gloating eyes she drew me to her, and her hot lips travelled along my cheek in kisses; and she would whisper, almost in sobs, 'You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever.' Then she has thrown herself back in her chair, with her small hands over her eyes, leaving me trembling”.  Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

The novella by Sheridan Le Fan was called Carmilla (1872) and the work builds upon many Gothic elements that were to become central to Poe's works. Both Carmilla and Poe's works, such as "The Fall of the House of Usher," emphasize decaying and eerie settings that evoke dread. Carmilla features an old castle in Austria, shrouded in mystery and supernatural tension, much like Poe's use of ruined mansions and isolated landscapes to establish psychological terror.Well, I might as get it out of the way first and address the elephant in the room ...Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Both Sarah and I have big buzzwords outside of dark academia, and several of them are vampires and ‘Carmilla' retelling and we added ‘Hungerstone' to our line up so fast when we learned that this novel is inspired by ‘Carmilla' b Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, a sapphic vampire novella that predated ‘Dracula'.Even with my slight aversion to historical fiction, reading this and talking about it on Season 10 was a no-brainer.FOR WHAT DO YOU HUNGER . . Torn between regaining her husband's affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .But does the Gothic lead in dark academia with ‘Hungerstone'?In this episode we discuss:- The motifs of blood- The crumbling estate of Nethshaw and the way it interacts with Lenore's crumbling marriage and mental state- Carmilla's presence in the novel, and her lack of presence on page

Carmilla (1872) is a vampire novella written by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu. It tells the story of a lesbian romance between Carmilla, a 150 year old vampire, and Laura, a 19-year-old girl living with her widowed father in a castle in Austria. Through the concept of vampirism, Sheridan uses the character of Carmilla to explore queer relationships and female sexual expression in a time of strict patriarchy.  For Further Reading:  Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu  Unveiling Carmilla: Subverting Gender Roles and Exploring Queer Desire in Le Fanu's Novella:  "Carmilla": The Arts of Repression: Pgs.197–223.  October is the perfect time to delve into all things spooky. Tonight, as part of our 6th annual spooky sleep story series, we'll rebroadcast the opening to “Carmilla”, an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu which first aired in October of 2022. Tune in every Wednesday this month for sleep stories of the darker variety- like classic horror literature and ghost stories. If you prefer to avoid the mildly macabre we hope you'll enjoy one of our many other stories available wherever you listen to podcasts. Originally published in 1872, Carmilla predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by over 25 years and is considered one of the earliest works of vampire fiction. Sheridan Le Fanu's novella is a gothic tale set in a remote Austrian estate, where a young woman named Laura encounters the enigmatic and alluring Carmilla. What begins as an unexpected friendship quickly descends into something far more sinister as Laura becomes entangled in Carmilla's dark, seductive influence. What makes Carmilla particularly fascinating is its portrayal of a female vampire with overtly sensual undertones, challenging Victorian norms. The novella is rich with gothic atmosphere, utilizing isolated settings, eerie dreams, and uncanny occurrences to build suspense. Le Fanu's story is not only notable for its eerie ambiance but also for its early feminist subtext. Carmilla is portrayed as a powerful, predatory force in a genre that typically cast women as passive victims. For fans of gothic literature and early vampire lore, Carmilla remains a foundational piece, paving the way for the vampire genre as we know it today, and offering a haunting tale of desire, fear, and the dangers lurking behind a beautiful façade. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!
