Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 345 - Challenging Male AuthorityWell, I had planned for the previous episode to be the last one where I dealt with Carmilla - but I soon found out that the work was easy to get into, but hard to get out of. So what follows is another - and hopefully the last - episode regarding Carmilla. You see, ”Carmilla" focuses more on psychological terror and emotional entanglement rather than physical violence, creating a more nuanced and unsettling atmosphere that can really stick with you.As mentioned in the previous episode, the novella is notable for its portrayal of same-sex desire, with Carmilla expressing romantic and sexual interest in her female victims. This queer subtext was groundbreaking for its time.Carmilla also exhibits some unique traits compared to other literary vampires. She can move about during daylight hours, though she has nocturnal habits. And unlike some vampires who prey indiscriminately, Carmilla becomes emotionally involved with a select few of her victims, adding depth to her character. The novella incorporates classic Gothic fiction elements, including a supernatural figure, a dark castle setting, and an ominous atmosphere.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.
Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - This is episode 345 - Stirring Sexual DesireI was looking at the podcast episodes I have done, and realized that I had written three or more episodes for each subject. But I only did two for Carmilla, and have come to realize that the narrative does deserve more attention. You see, there is no question that Carmilla has lesbian/homoerotic undertones that were groundbreaking for its time. Being a gay male, I might not be the ideal person to speak to the lesbian subtext, but I can certainly give it a try.The story features several scenes of physical closeness between a young woman named Laura and a female vampire named Carmilla, including embraces, caresses, and even Carmilla fondling Laura in bed. These interactions are described in sensual terms that suggest a romantic and sexual attraction. The relationship between the two women is characterized by intense emotions, possessiveness, and a deep, almost obsessive connection that goes beyond typical friendship.Carmilla is one of the early works of vampire fiction, definitely predating Bram Stoker's “Dracula." The story is narrated by Laura, a young woman who becomes the target of a female vampire named Carmilla.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - This is episode 344 - Leaving Me TremblingHope you are doing well, and I will just jump right into it -One of the most explicit passages in Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla that hints at lesbian desire, within the constraints of Victorian Gothic literature, is as follows:"Sometimes after an hour of apathy, my strange and beautiful companion would take my hand and hold it with a fond pressure, renewed again and again; blushing softly, gazing in my face with languid and burning eyes, and breathing so fast that her dress rose and fell with the tumultuous respiration. It was like the ardor of a lover; it embarrassed me; it was hateful and yet overpowering; and with gloating eyes she drew me to her, and her hot lips travelled along my cheek in kisses; and she would whisper, almost in sobs, 'You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever.' Then she has thrown herself back in her chair, with her small hands over her eyes, leaving me trembling”. Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate 343 - The First Lesbian VampireAfter looking at some of the alleged crimes of Elizabeth - and by this time, I am ready to call her actions a part of folklore - I'd like to delve in a definitely fictional female character who helped shaped the Gothic tradition in literature. The novella by Sheridan Le Fan was called Carmilla (1872) and the work builds upon many Gothic elements that were to become central to Poe's works. Both Carmilla and Poe's works, such as "The Fall of the House of Usher," emphasize decaying and eerie settings that evoke dread. Carmilla features an old castle in Austria, shrouded in mystery and supernatural tension, much like Poe's use of ruined mansions and isolated landscapes to establish psychological terror.Well, I might as get it out of the way first and address the elephant in the room ...Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Both Sarah and I have big buzzwords outside of dark academia, and several of them are vampires and ‘Carmilla' retelling and we added ‘Hungerstone' to our line up so fast when we learned that this novel is inspired by ‘Carmilla' b Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, a sapphic vampire novella that predated ‘Dracula'.Even with my slight aversion to historical fiction, reading this and talking about it on Season 10 was a no-brainer.FOR WHAT DO YOU HUNGER . . . ?Lenore is the wife of steel magnate Henry, but ten years into their marriage the relationship has soured, and no child has arrived to fill the distance growing between them. Henry's ambitions take them from London to the Peak District, to the remote, imposing Nethershaw estate, where he plans to host a hunting party. Lenore must work to restore the crumbling house and ready it for Henry's guests - their future depends on it.But as the couple travel through the bleak countryside, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into Lenore's life. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night, Carmilla who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger . . .As the day of the hunt draws closer, Lenore begins to unravel, questioning the role she has been playing all these years. Torn between regaining her husband's affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk . . .But does the Gothic lead in dark academia with ‘Hungerstone'?In this episode we discuss:- The motifs of blood- The crumbling estate of Nethshaw and the way it interacts with Lenore's crumbling marriage and mental state- Carmilla's presence in the novel, and her lack of presence on page

Hey folks, it's Eira, creator of Not Quite Dead. Something a little bit different today; our friends over at Re: Dracula have been percolating something spectacular in their off-season: a new adaptation of Carmilla. Carmilla is one of those classic vampire stories which made me fall in love with them as creatures. This new adaptation of the classic toxic lesbian vampire romance is being done in the same style as Re: Dracula, and you'll be able to listen to the whole thing in the Re: Dracula feed starting from today. I really hope you enjoy it. You can find it by searching 'Re: Dracula' wherever you listen to podcasts, or by following the links in the description of this episode. Carmilla (1872) is a vampire novella written by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu. It tells the story of a lesbian romance between Carmilla, a 150 year old vampire, and Laura, a 19-year-old girl living with her widowed father in a castle in Austria. Through the concept of vampirism, Sheridan uses the character of Carmilla to explore queer relationships and female sexual expression in a time of strict patriarchy. Tonight, as part of our 6th annual spooky sleep story series, we'll rebroadcast the opening to “Carmilla”, an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu which first aired in October of 2022. Tune in every Wednesday this month for sleep stories of the darker variety- like classic horror literature and ghost stories. If you prefer to avoid the mildly macabre we hope you'll enjoy one of our many other stories available wherever you listen to podcasts. Originally published in 1872, Carmilla predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by over 25 years and is considered one of the earliest works of vampire fiction. Sheridan Le Fanu's novella is a gothic tale set in a remote Austrian estate, where a young woman named Laura encounters the enigmatic and alluring Carmilla. What begins as an unexpected friendship quickly descends into something far more sinister as Laura becomes entangled in Carmilla's dark, seductive influence. What makes Carmilla particularly fascinating is its portrayal of a female vampire with overtly sensual undertones, challenging Victorian norms. The novella is rich with gothic atmosphere, utilizing isolated settings, eerie dreams, and uncanny occurrences to build suspense. Le Fanu's story is not only notable for its eerie ambiance but also for its early feminist subtext. Carmilla is portrayed as a powerful, predatory force in a genre that typically cast women as passive victims. For fans of gothic literature and early vampire lore, Carmilla remains a foundational piece, paving the way for the vampire genre as we know it today, and offering a haunting tale of desire, fear, and the dangers lurking behind a beautiful façade. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Vampyr is a 1932 gothic horror film directed by Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. It was written by Dreyer and Christen Jul based on elements from Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 collection of supernatural stories In a Glass Darkly - in particular, the short story titled Carmilla. Vampyr represents significant milestones in film, horror, and vampire history, and some of what you learn in this episode may change the way you think about horror cinema... forever.
