Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - This is episode 344 - Leaving Me TremblingHope you are doing well, and I will just jump right into it -One of the most explicit passages in Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla that hints at lesbian desire, within the constraints of Victorian Gothic literature, is as follows:"Sometimes after an hour of apathy, my strange and beautiful companion would take my hand and hold it with a fond pressure, renewed again and again; blushing softly, gazing in my face with languid and burning eyes, and breathing so fast that her dress rose and fell with the tumultuous respiration. It was like the ardor of a lover; it embarrassed me; it was hateful and yet overpowering; and with gloating eyes she drew me to her, and her hot lips travelled along my cheek in kisses; and she would whisper, almost in sobs, 'You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever.' Then she has thrown herself back in her chair, with her small hands over her eyes, leaving me trembling”.  Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Carmilla (1872) is a vampire novella written by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu. It tells the story of a lesbian romance between Carmilla, a 150 year old vampire, and Laura, a 19-year-old girl living with her widowed father in a castle in Austria. Through the concept of vampirism, Sheridan uses the character of Carmilla to explore queer relationships and female sexual expression in a time of strict patriarchy.  For Further Reading:  Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu  Unveiling Carmilla: Subverting Gender Roles and Exploring Queer Desire in Le Fanu's Novella:  "Carmilla": The Arts of Repression: Pgs.197–223.  October is the perfect time to delve into all things spooky. Tonight, as part of our 6th annual spooky sleep story series, we'll rebroadcast the opening to “Carmilla”, an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu which first aired in October of 2022. Tune in every Wednesday this month for sleep stories of the darker variety- like classic horror literature and ghost stories. If you prefer to avoid the mildly macabre we hope you'll enjoy one of our many other stories available wherever you listen to podcasts. Originally published in 1872, Carmilla predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by over 25 years and is considered one of the earliest works of vampire fiction. Sheridan Le Fanu's novella is a gothic tale set in a remote Austrian estate, where a young woman named Laura encounters the enigmatic and alluring Carmilla. What begins as an unexpected friendship quickly descends into something far more sinister as Laura becomes entangled in Carmilla's dark, seductive influence. What makes Carmilla particularly fascinating is its portrayal of a female vampire with overtly sensual undertones, challenging Victorian norms. The novella is rich with gothic atmosphere, utilizing isolated settings, eerie dreams, and uncanny occurrences to build suspense. Le Fanu's story is not only notable for its eerie ambiance but also for its early feminist subtext. Carmilla is portrayed as a powerful, predatory force in a genre that typically cast women as passive victims. For fans of gothic literature and early vampire lore, Carmilla remains a foundational piece, paving the way for the vampire genre as we know it today, and offering a haunting tale of desire, fear, and the dangers lurking behind a beautiful façade. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Continuing our series exploring the vampire, the ever-popular figure and symbol against which we can define our own humanity. Today we will be looking at one of the most influential pre-Dracula vampires in Carmilla, and exploring all the ways Le Fanu extends previous vampire writings and imbues them with a distinctly contemporary and literary impetus. We will continue in the coming weeks to discuss Dracula, which owes a not inconsiderable debt to Carmilla in how it approaches the figure and crystallises it into the spectre we know today. Launching Season Six, we go behind the scenes of the woman-strong Irish film Lies We Tell, a brooding tale of angels and demons, light and shadow, manners and mores, family secrets and family crimes, which The Guardian called “a tightly laced, elegantly cut gothic period drama.”A total rethinking of Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu's 1864 novel Uncle Silas, the film centers on Maud Ruthyn, brilliantly portrayed by the rising young star Agnes O'Casey, great-granddaughter of the playwright, Sean O'Casey, who is trapped in the sprawling family estate Knowl (filmed at Ardgillan Castle in County Dublin) and by “the law being made and enforced by men.”The Guardian called her delivery “as sharp as a steak knife” and Screen International wrote, “A singular performance by Agnes O'Casey gives the pretty period piece a serrated edge.”Our episode starts with a prelude from Maedhbh Fiona Mc Cullagh, director of Washington, DC's Solas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival, which kicks off on Feb. 29th with Lies We Tell. Then Director Lisa Mulcahy and screenwriter Elisabeth Gooch talk about how they transformed a century-and-a-half-old Gothic period drama into a compelling woman-centered story relevant to today. We learn why Elizabeth found the 1864 Maude so annoying and Lisa talks about the budget pressures that led to the film's signature candle-lit ambiance, creating what Film Journal called “a tale of flawlessness and immersive beauty.”Then you'll meet Agnes O'Casey and hear about her UK upbringing, her Trinity College Dublin theatre training, her embrace of the Sean O'Casey lineage, her TV breakthrough in Ridley Road, her recent roles in films with the likes of Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, Stephen Rea, and a Cillian Murphy film yet to be released, and the challenges of being on camera in almost every scene of Lies We Tell.Join us to meet the makers and learn the backstory of the brilliant, woman-forwards Lies We Tell.Links:Lies We TellWebsiteIMDbAgnes O'CaseyWikipedia IMDbPortfolio ShowreelLisa MulcahyWebsiteIMDbTwitterElisabeth GoochIMDbMaedhbh Fiona Mc Cullagh LinkedInTwitterSolas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival

Looking to take on a more commercial project after the lackluster box office of the critically acclaimed The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), writer/director Carl Theodore Dreyer decided that a horror movie was the way to go. Loosely adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu's story collection 'In a Glass Darkly', Vampyr was filmed on location in the French countryside with a cast primarily composed of non-actors. Its shoestring budget forced the filmmakers to rely on symbolic imagery and allusive atmospherics rather than spectacular effects work. Vampyr was released to a severe critical drubbing and an actively hostile audience (a riot broke out in Vienna when dissatisfied theater patrons were denied a refund). However, Vampyr was reappraised decades later and is now considered an intriguing example of how artists of the silent era approached the advent of talkies. Ryan is joined by Sarah and Cheryl for a close look at this evocative cult film. Discussion points include Vampyr's debt to German Expressionism, its key place in the evolution of the cinematic vampire, and the religious subtext of its storytelling. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support

This desperate need to reconnect with his lost chances, lost friendships, lost opportunities, etc. has its roots in the writings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, who influenced James greatly. One of Swedenborg's theories was that of “vastation”, in which a supernatural encounter with your darker alter-ego occurred, which must be defeated and overcome to progress in the spiritual plane. Emmanuel Swedenborg influenced many great thinkers, including Fjodor Dostoyevsky, Robert Louis Stevenson, George Bernard Shaw, Sheridan LeFanu,  Abraham Lincoln, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and many others.  And now, The Jolly Corner, Part 2 of 2, by Henry James. Joseph Sheridan Le FanuJoseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer and one of the leading ghost story writers of the 19th century. Born into a literary family in Dublin, he studied law and became a journalist. Le Fanu's first published story appeared in 1838. In 1844, he married Susanna Bennett and had four children.Following his wife's death in 1858, Le Fanu withdrew from society for a period of time. However, during the 1860s and 1870s, he produced his most notable supernatural fiction, including the acclaimed short story collection "In a Glass Darkly" (1872) and the vampire novella "Carmilla" (1871).Le Fanu's ghost stories, such as "Green Tea," "The Familiar," and "Mr Justice Harbottle," earned him admiration from fellow writers like M.R. James. Although he also wrote novels, journalism, and poetry, Le Fanu's reputation predominantly rests on his chilling tales of the supernatural. He passed away in Dublin in 1873 at the age of 58. Today, Le Fanu is regarded as one of the pioneers and masters of supernatural horror fiction. His work greatly influenced subsequent writers, including Bram Stoker, who drew inspiration from Le Fanu's vampire story, "Carmilla."Schalken The Painter AnalysisIn "Schalken The Painter," Vanderhausen can be seen as a representation of the shadow archetype, embodying the dark, repressed, and sinister aspects of the characters Douw and Schalken. The shadow is a psychological concept in Jungian theory that represents the hidden, suppressed, and often undesirable aspects of the psyche. It holds the unacknowledged fears, desires, and weaknesses that individuals may project onto others.Full analysis and links herehttps://www.ghostpod.org/2023/07/15/schalken-the-painter-by-j-sheridan-le-fanu/New Patreon RequestBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Tonight, as part of our fourth annual spooky sleep story series, we'll read the opening to “Carmilla”, an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu. Our series will run every Monday of October. This is one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula by 26 years Le Fanu presents the story as part of the casebook of Dr. Hesselius, whose departures from medical orthodoxy rank him as the first occult detective in literature. Occult detective fiction is a subgenre of detective fiction that combines the tropes of the main genre with those of supernatural, fantasy and/or horror fiction. The occult detective is employed in cases involving ghosts, demons and other supernatural elements, and the detectives are sometimes portrayed as having psychic or other magical powers. If you enjoy this episode, be sure to listen to “The Hound of the Baskervilles” episode from last October, which would also be considered occult detective fiction, if only Sherlock was not so good at solving mysteries at the end.
