Before too long, they steal a hand cart to mosey on down the railroad line directly to Scalipoli.Who are these hippies being assigned such an important task? We start with DEKA's biggest non-championship event ever and a weekend that felt different the moment you walked in. Bigger production, new machines, and a lot of people trying to figure out what it all means. Then the Not So Live Show with Cheryl, Matt and special guest IanK from UKHXR. DEKA production upgrades: new start line, finish line, and overall feel The new Lycan machines: faster times, different feel, and athlete reactions Why changing machines resets the entire leaderboard The real issue: long wait times and races starting up to an hour late Judging, volunteers, and the bottleneck problem inside DEKA Does DEKA owe athletes better communication on major changes? HYROX London setup: 10-day event, Elite 15, and a new level of production The "Thunderdome" wall ball setup and why it stands out Influencer races: exposure vs actual impact on the sport Kids races, growth in Europe, and what translates to the US Summary DEKA is clearly growing. The event looked better. Bigger setup, more production, new machines, and more people than ever. But the changes didn't come clean. The machines shifted how the race feels, times got weird, and for a lot of athletes it turned into a full reset. And then there's the part that still hasn't been fixed. Long waits, late starts, and a system that struggles to keep up with its own growth. At the same time, HYROX London is running a completely different play. Bigger, louder, more structured, and somehow still scaling. From Elite 15 to influencer races, it's becoming a full week-long production.
In this exciting episode of the Wise_N_Nerdy podcast, Charles and Joe are joined by special guest Dennis Robinson, the writer and director behind the comic series Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey. Together, the trio dive into an episode filled with fatherhood wisdom, fandom discussions, convention culture, and plenty of groan-worthy dad humor—all while reminding listeners to Find your FAMdom. The show kicks off with the Question of the Week: “What's the best piece of marriage advice you received early on in your marriage?” Listeners and hosts alike share thoughtful insights about building strong relationships. From learning to communicate clearly to intentionally serving your spouse with selflessness, the conversation highlights the kind of practical wisdom that strengthens marriages over time. As always, the Wise_N_Nerdy community brings heartfelt perspectives that blend real-life experience with a touch of humor. With the ceremonial roll of the dice, the first segment selected is Parliament of Papas. Here, Charles, Joe, and Dennis explore a dilemma that many nerdy parents face: Is it okay to skip a family event in order to attend a convention? The discussion dives into the nuances of balancing personal passions with family responsibilities. They examine how communication, expectations, and context all play important roles when deciding whether to prioritize a fandom event or family obligations. Next, the dice land on the “How Do I…?” segment, where the hosts tackle a challenge familiar to creators everywhere: how to recognize constructive criticism versus when to ignore trolls. Dennis shares candid insights from his own journey creating Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey, recalling how early feedback included plenty of harsh criticism. Instead of letting negativity derail the project, he focused on the feedback that helped him grow while learning to tune out unhelpful noise. It's a valuable lesson for anyone working in creative fields or navigating criticism online. The fates then guide the episode into “Daddy, Tell Me A Story.” In this segment, the hosts reflect on the emotional rollercoaster of attending conventions. They talk about the excitement that builds in the weeks leading up to an event—the anticipation of meeting creators, exploring vendor halls, and connecting with fellow fans. But they also discuss the lesser-known side of convention culture: the post-con blues, when the adrenaline fades and everyday life resumes. Their stories highlight the unique way fandom events create unforgettable memories and meaningful connections. Of course, no episode of Wise_N_Nerdy would be complete without Bad Dad Jokes, and this time Dennis kicks things off with a zinger that sets the tone perfectly. The laughs keep coming as several SpeakPipe submissions bring even more delightfully groan-worthy jokes from listeners. The segment perfectly captures the wholesome, family-friendly humor that has become a hallmark of the show. Finally, the episode wraps up with “What Are You Nerding Out About?”, where each host shares the fandom currently capturing their attention. Charles is loving the early access release of Slay the Spire II, praising the strategic gameplay and addictive card-based mechanics. Joe, meanwhile, is deep into My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Season 2, explaining how the series adds fascinating new layers to the larger My Hero Academia universe. And Dennis shares his excitement about launching a new Kickstarter campaign for Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey, inviting fans to join him on the next chapter of the story. Between meaningful discussions about marriage, creator perseverance, convention culture, and fandom passions, this episode captures everything that makes the Wise_N_Nerdy community special. Whether you're a parent, a creator, a convention-goer, or simply someone who loves great stories, this episode is a reminder that nerd culture is at its best when it brings people together. I just hope my wallet can financially recover from this! This was a fun interview, so go check out this episode. Lend us your eyes and ears, you won't be sorry!! Join us for a fun show! Recorded live from the floor of New York Comic Con 2025, Jace sits down with actor and comic creator Thomas Jane to talk about his latest Comixology Originals series, The Lycan. Known for his work in The Punisher, The Expanse, and Grey Matter, Jane dives into his passion for comics and storytelling, describing The Lycan as a gothic romance with werewolves set in 1797—a dark, atmospheric tale blending period drama, wartime tension, and supernatural horror. Drawing inspiration from films like Nosferatu and Brotherhood of the Wolf, the series follows a group of stranded hunters who strike a desperate deal on an isolated British isle, leading to chaos, blood, and unexpected twists. Jane discusses the advantages of digital storytelling through Comixology's panel-by-panel reading experience, the excitement of eventually collecting the full story in print, and the parallels between his work as an actor and as a writer shaping emotion and pacing. The conversation captures the infectious energy of NYCC as Jane reflects on connecting with fans, celebrating creativity, and keeping the love of comics alive through every medium.

HORROR WITH SIR. STURDY EP 542
Fifteen years ago, actor Thomas Jane and David James Kelly co-wrote the script for “The Lycan.” Different attempts to bring it to life fell by the wayside, but the time has come and the first issue is now available through Comixology. Here's a look at the story: The story takes place in 1777. After a successful expedition in Africa, a hardened band of international big game hunters set out to return home with their bounty when their voyage takes a turn and the men are shipwrecked off a small British island. Under the tutelage of Absalom Coffin, the men make a deal with Lord Ludgate, ruler of the island. In exchange for fresh supplies and the repair of their good ship The Calydonian, the men are assigned a task they are particularly well suited for: find the Berserking Beasts that have been eating his subjects, including a group of young Benedictine Nuns, and destroy them. But the men encounter more sinister and dangerous beasts than anyone expected. In this interview, Thomas gives us the history behind “The Lycan” and how we've come to issue #1. He talks about working with write Mike Carey and artist Diego Yapur and the amazing talent they brought to the project. He gives a glimpse of what's to come over this six-issue series. We take a look at some of the characters, including Absalom and Sister Trent and what inspired them. Thomas also gives his take on the look of the comic and how he got into comics in his youth.

They couldn't let go. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey resurrect The Lycan, a comics project languishing for over fifteen years. Jane and screenwriter David James Kelly initiated the concept and hired Carey to write the script. An artist was also hired. That artist disappeared. An opportunity arose years later, and a new artist, Diego Yapur, finally materialized this ruthless tale of adventure and horror. The North Sea. 1797. A ship shatters on the shore of a Scottish isle. The hunters within spill upon the sand, encountering a Red Coat regiment and a Convent-turned-Fortress. The three factions mistrust each other but must find unity if they're to defend themselves from a hirsute plague. The Lycan recalls the gnarliest stories in the best comic book anthologies: Twisted Tales, Creepy, Vault of Horror, etc. Yet, it's given the space that writers like Bruce Jones were never afforded. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey are confident storytellers who've spent a lifetime consuming this beautiful medium and know they can let the title and the many engaging characters below it do the work. The beast is coming, but in The Lycan #1, the horror explored is utterly, painfully human. With the French Revolution on the horizon, paranoia grips everyone, and the faith carried by pirates, soldiers, and nuns is challenged and found fractured. How can they possibly fight their doggie dinner destiny? The Lycan allows our podcast conversation with Thomas Jane and Mike Carey to travel into various caves and crannies. We dig into their passion for the comic book medium and how it differs from movies (The Punisher) and novels (The Girl With All The Gifts). We discuss the comic's complicated origin and the challenge of collaboration, as well as the powerful, relatable themes at this book's center. Fear, paranoia, and faith - who needs a werewolf to do you in? The Lycan #1 is now available on ComiXology but will eventually see physical release through Ablaze. In Episode 612: Biblical Dogmen, guest host, Joel Thomas, is joined by Juan Ayala from the Juan on Juan Podcast and Justin England from Cryptids of the Corn Podcast in a mind bending journey of Dogmen tribes and lycanthropy (werewolves) from Biblical, alchemical and biological viewpoints. They look at the connection between dogs, humans, kings and the gods, including the dog headed Egyptian god of judgement and protection, Anubis, which also spawned off the cult of Hermanubis which was located in Cynopolis, the “city of dogs”. They then explore the possibilities of Virophages, small, double-stranded DNA viral phages that require the co-infection of another virus which could be linked to Fallen Angel DNA manipulation creating a Dogman cryptid species. The topic of the ancient race of dog-headed men, better known as the Cynocephali is brought into the mix, generating discussion on the Geek physician Ctesias first written account of the Dogmen tribe in the mountains of India, Herodotus interaction with the same tribe and Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus own experience with war like tribes of Dogmen of the same Cynocephalus. Saint Christopher, is also discovered as a Cynocephalus, a Dogman who allegedly met Jesus Christ and turned from his life of sin to become a patron saint of the church. That leads the group to a Biblical revelation that Moses first wife could have been a werewolf and King Nebuchadnezzar II may have also been cursed with lycanthropy in a warning from the Prophet Daniel. Hold on tight to that Lycan fur because this episode will have you howling to the moon.
