"The War on Small Business" is a must-read for small business owners and for Americans. In this two-part episode, Kevin Black opens a discussion with New York Times bestselling author, Carol Roth. The two discuss her new, extremely detailed and very persuasive case that the US government and its central planners tried to destroy small business during COVID 2020. During this discussion, different topics are discussed: Why Carol picked this fight highlighting the government's war on small business What the “Black Swan” is and how it affected us The level of research, considering there are over 500 sources for this book, ranging from news articles to personal interviews, as well as important economists, like Murray Rothbard to Thomas Sowell. How Carol weaves multiple disciplines together to make her case, such as philosophy, history, economics, just to name the essential ones. It’s not just science fiction: As AI becomes more complex and prevalent, so do the ethical implications of this new technology. But don’t just take it from me – take it from Carol Smith, a leading voice in the field of UX and AI. Carol is a senior research scientist in human-machine interaction at Carnegie Mellon University’s Emerging Tech Center, a division of the school’s Software Engineering Institute. Formerly a senior researcher for Uber’s self-driving vehicle experience, Carol-who also works as an adjunct professor at the university’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute-does research on Ethical AI in her work with the US Department of Defense. Throughout her 20 years in the UX field, Carol has studied how focusing on ethics can improve user experience with AI. On today’s episode, Carol and I talked about exactly that: the intersection of user experience and artificial intelligence, what Carol’s work with the DoD has taught her, and why design matters when using machine learning and automation. Better yet, Carol gives us some specific, actionable guidance and her four principles for designing ethical AI systems. In total, we covered: “Human-machine teaming”: what Carol learned while researching how passengers would interact with autonomous cars at Uber (2:17)Why Carol focuses on the ethical implications of the user experience research she is doing (4:20)Why designing for AI is both a new endeavor and an extension of existing human-centered design principles (6:24)How knowing a user’s information needs can drive immense value in AI products (9:14)Carol explains how teams can improve their AI product by considering ethics (11:45)“Thinking through the worst-case scenarios”: Why ethics matters in AI development (14:35) and methods to include ethics early in the process (17:11)The intersection between soldiers and artificial intelligence (19:34)Making AI flexible to human oddities and complexities (25:11)How exactly diverse teams help us design better AI solutions (29:00)Carol’s four principles of designing ethical AI systems and “abusability testing” (32:01) Quotes from Today’s Episode “The craft of design-particularly for #analytics and #AI solutions-is figuring out who this customer is-your user-and exactly what amount of evidence do they need, and at what time do they need it, and the format they need it in.” – Brian “From a user experience, or human-centered design aspect, just trying to learn as much as you can about the individuals who are going to use the system is really helpful … And then beyond that, as you start to think about ethics, there are a lot of activities you can do, just speculation activities that you can do on the couch, so to speak, and think through – what is the worst thing that could happen with the system?” – Carol “[For AI, I recommend] ‘abusability testing,’ or ‘black mirror episode testing,’ where you’re really thinking through the absolute worst-case scenario because it really helps you to think about the people who could be the most impacted. And particularly people who are marginalized in society, we really want to be careful that we’re not adding to the already bad situations that they’re already facing.” – Carol, on ways to think about the ethical implications of an AI system “I think people need to be more open to doing slightly slower work […] the move fast and break things time is over. It just, it doesn’t work. Too many people do get hurt, and it’s not a good way to make things. We can make them better, slightly slower.” – Carol “The four principl

Today, your host Ellen Gardner, Communications and Marketing at HIROC, speaks with Carol Annett, CEO, VHA Home HealthCare. In the 20 years since Carol joined VHA, home healthcare has gone from being an afterthought – with virtually no status or investment – to becoming an essential, influential and highly-valued healthcare service. Whether people are in recovery, living with chronic illness or want to die at home, the goal of VHA is to support them in living independently and with dignity. But leading a home healthcare organization in these times also means dealing with funding pressures, an inequitable compensation system, and a remote workforce. Still, Carol draws positive energy from the organization’s mission, the dedicated volunteer board, and the special skills and commitment of her professional staff, working solo in the community and delivering care to patients with higher acuity and complex needs. Key Takeaways: [2:15] What intrigued Carol about the mission of VHA [3:21] The roots of VHA [4:57] The special nature of VHA’s culture [6:22] How VHA’s mission of supporting and helping people achieve independence and live to their potential has served clients well [8:08] Carol’s personal experience as a caregiver [8:28] Home care is about families…they are the backbone of home care [9:10] How the care needs of the client groups served by VHA have changed [9:47] The pressure and responsibility put on professional staff working solo and travelling through the day [10:49] How the necessity of working faster – and pressure on funding – has changed the nature of the working environment [12:12] The lack of equitable compensation in our healthcare system creates challenges and needs to be addressed, especially with a shrinking pool of resources [17:10] The positive outcomes of a community partnership with Michael Garron Hospital [19:10] Why Carol embraces a philosophy built around “try many things, make mistakes and move on”…and looks for that attitude in trusted partners [20:14] Finding a way to engage more voices in VHA’s new strategic plan [21:16] Why Carol loves the government’s vision for healthcare, including moving towards Integrated Care [22:22] How VHA plans to shine a light on their knowledge and role as a thought-leader in the future of home healthcare [23:25] What energizes Carol in her life and her work [26:00] How VHA works to ensure the physical and emotional safety of employees [31:27] What inspires Carol about the next generation of leaders coming into healthcare [33:00] Why having a positive outlook is central to Carol’s character and leadership style [34:55] The programs initiated by VHA that Carol and her team take pride in Mentioned in this Episode: VHA Home HealthCare Michael Garron Hospital South Riverdale Community Health Centre Unity Health Toronto Woodgreen Community Services VHA’s Heart of Home Care Award Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. Andrew and Michelle’s trip to RDH Under One Roof actually allowed them to pack a bunch of RDHs (and a dentist!) under one roof to record this episode. The subject at hand is teledentistry, where technology allows dental professionals to examine and diagnose individuals who may not be able to make it to a clinic. And a big thanks to MouthWatch for helping to put this discussion together! Carol Roszel, RDH, is the oral health director for Little City Foundation, an organization that works with intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals. Staci Stout is a hygienist and the owner of Dentacare and the corresponding Dentacare Foundation, which provide oral health care to schools, nursing homes and corporations. Elaine Mamola is the founder of Smiles By Delivery, which utilizes teledentistry as a means of providing homebound seniors and some veterans with proper care. Brittany Kinol is a dentist and the founder of Miracle Dental Associates, which helps underserved children in the Pittsburgh area. In this episode, our guests explain how teledentistry makes their services much more accessible than they otherwise might have been, discuss some of the techniques and processes used to bring dentistry into the home, and explore how hygienists are absolutely essential to remote work. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 6:51 - Our guests explain how they provide underserved populations with dental care and how teledentistry plays a major role in that. - How hygienists are key players in making teledentistry happen. - Some of the more unusual substitutes for denture relines Elaine has seen in her time. - How technology expedites—and occasionally complicates—teledentistry work. - Staci breaks down the difference between synchronous and asynchronous teledentistry. - Carol explains how much information is needed to make a remote identification or diagnosis. - Why Carol believes teledentistry is such a major advancement to the field. - What are some of the legislative complications of teledentistry? - Brittany shares her love for dental hygienists and why she sees them as a progressive force. - Our guests advise listeners on how they can get started with teledentistry. QUOTES: “You’re utilizing this dentist a lot better because he can be providing exams in multiple locations.” “Teledentistry really kind of closes those gaps and it makes the care much more efficient.” “Not only has [teledentistry] enhanced our treatment, but it has increased the number of people being seen.” “Teledentistry is truly one of the biggest advancements in dentistry in decades.” “You guys are just so smart and so progressive compared to dentists.” “Everybody can play happily in the sandbox if we’re working together.” LINKS: Denticare homepage - https://www.denticare.dental/ Staci’s email: staci@denticaremanagement.com Carol’s email: croszel@littlecity.org Smiles By Delivery homepage - https://smilesbydelivery.com/ Elaine’s email: emamola@smilesbydelivery.com Miracle Dental Care homepage - https://www.miracledentalcare.org/ Brittany’s email: dr.kinol@miracledentalcare.org MouthWatch homepage - https://www.mouthwatch.com/ Thank you to Paradise Dental Technologies aka PDT for providing ce sponsorship for this episode!
