Listeners of The Inner Circle with Carrie Doll that love the show mention:Born just outside Edmonton, Erin Holowach and her husband Travis are the minds behind ComFree, which is a name well-known by anyone involved in Edmonton real estate in the early 2000's. Nowadays, Erin and Travis run its spiritual successor, homeFree, and are bringing fully supported private sales back to the real estate market. In 2009, in an attempt to take ComFree to the national level, the pair entered into a merger- which unfortunately had disastrous results. Other shareholders had different plans for the company, bringing an end to ComFree and leaving Erin and Travis reeling.Over the next 12 years, in search of a new business plan, Erin and Travis became full-time entrepreneurs. As it turns out, real estate was their specialty: they were involved in quite a few startups, investments and mergers, culminating in the creation of homeFree. In Erin's own words from her biography, she also "Continues to be involved in multiple entrepreneurs' organizations, leadership summits and business coaching, helping other leaders and entrepreneurs grow and operate their business to their fullest potential."To learn more about Erin, follow her on LinkedIn or Facebook. Come and listen to a story about how a group of talented experts have developed a credit card sized kit that can save people who are having a heart attack.About half of adult Canadians have at least one risk factor for a heart attack; diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, family history over the age of 55. One third of those of Canadians who have a heart attack will die before they get to medical attention. James Stewart, an engineer, says he's had “friends and relatives who have died of a heart attack. So that's been my motivation right from the beginning. I've used to carry ASA and nitroglycerin in a baggie and I've carried this in my emergency kit for a long time. And it wasn't until somebody who came with me on one of these snowmobiling excursions actually mentioned to me, ‘What are those pills you have in your emergency kit?'. And I said, ‘Well, that's ASA and Nitroglycerin'. And the fellow was studying nursing at Grant McEwen College, and he told me that, ‘Hey, those nitroglycerin pills, they will have expired. And I said, ‘Well, what do you mean?' He said, ‘Well, nitroglycerin reacts with air and light and layers itself on plastic and metal. So those pills you're packing probably hold no potency'."Stewart did some research and learned that this was all true. He needed to invent a packaging that would be stable so as to ensure that the medication remains stable for a long period of time.Stewart called up his friend, a renowned oncologist, Dr. John Mackey and the idea resonated with him too. Together, Stewart and Mackey came up with the idea of a heart attack card called SmHeartCard. It is a credit-card sized pill holder designed to save the lives of people who are having a heart attack. It holds 4ASA (81mg) and 3 Nitroglycerin (0.3 mg) pills, the standard medications given for the initial treatment of heart attack and angina. With the help of Dr. Neil Davies, a pharmacist who did the testing of the heart attack card, they proved that the pills can be stored safely for six months in the heart attack card.Learn more about the SMHeartCard at the Festival of Health on May 25. "I spent much of my life tutoring and mentoring children in French. When I became a mother of two young boys, I began putting together plans on how I wanted them to learn French from birth onwards. This ignited a spark in me to offer it to other families who were seeking extra support within their children's education.I was brought up in Edmonton, Alberta learning both English and French in tandem, since birth. I attended french schooling my entire life. I took what I learned in grade school, and put it towards achieving my Bachelor of Arts degree from the Campus St.Jean/University of Alberta. Following, I earned my professional diploma in Public Relations. Any program that involved extensive writing, I signed up for it. Language Arts has always been a deep rooted passion of mine.I am so humbled by the amazing community of teachers, instructors, parents, and students that have entrusted me with their educational experiences! I continue to learn from our community, to keep optimizing what we offer. I look forward to continuing to grow our amazing Tutor Teach community."Lara Courtepatte offers genuine connection alongside helping students through these unprecedented times that have caused some academic and social setbacks through her company, TutorTeach. With over 100 instructors, they have an enormous range of classes to offer from grade 10 math to sewing skills to help students excel at whatever subject with which they're struggling. The company came to be very naturally, and it's all thanks (or no thanks) to the teacher Lara had in grade 6 that changed her forever. Heather Chauvin is an author, speaker, life coach, mother, and all-around incredible human with a powerful message for this week's podcast. Heather goes into detail about her stage 4 cancer diagnosis, how it caused a powerful revelation in her, and how to unlock that potential within yourself without first having to receive devastating news. From Heather's own words:"I tried desperately to make sure my kids were happy and kept telling myself, “It's only a phase - this will get better with time,” all while continuing to pour from an empty cup at the expense of myself. The internal pressure I felt spilled out into my whole life. I was a tense and exhausted mom, partner, businesswoman, and friend. In the end, spinning my wheels almost killed me.A year after my youngest son was born I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and the illusion of control I held so tightly to came crashing down.In the blink of an eye I saw just how far away I was from living a life I actually wanted. I knew I couldn't keep living the same way if I wanted to experience real joy and fulfillment. As the chemo dripped into my body, I decided that I didn't just want to survive. I wanted to FEEL ALIVE.I consciously began to reparent myself and say no to my old excuses. What happened next blew me away.I started noticing a shift in my children's behavior. I saw greater success in my business. My health began to improve. My relationships grew more connected.Don't make the same mistake I did. Don't wait for an unexpected diagnosis to wake you up to making the changes in your life you've put on the backburner. You are WORTHY of feeling good, NOW."For more info on Heather and where to find her book, courses, and much more, visit her website.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A paradox - something that makes sense but doesn't make sense - is the only way to describe how living a messy, challenging life makes it a better one. Choices born of naivety, insecurity, and the awful-beautiful-unthinking way a young adult navigates the world is how it went for me. A need to feel loved, a fast engagement, and back-to-back pregnancies are what happened; addiction, disability, and death are what made it interesting. We don't plan for messy - we plan for perfection, but the messiness of the human experience is where the gold is. Messy is what sets you up for humility, empathy, connection, and gratitude. Messy is what allows you to arrive in new spaces & places with a sense of purpose and preparedness. Messy is what has made my life hard and meaningful and scary and worth living. See? Paradox at its finest. The question shouldn't be, 'Am I an alcoholic'? Instead, ask yourself, 'Does alcohol negatively impact my life'?For Heather Novak, the answer became very clear. She then had a desire for more clarity within. Giving up alcohol allowed for so much more growth & became one of the best decisions Heather has ever made. "I promised myself that I would have all the honest conversations I didn't want to have with myself & others because those are the ones that matter. I decided to no longer hide my words because hiding them hide me. I decided I was no longer a slave to my fears & the opinions of others. I decided that I would live with honesty, an open heart and mind, along with the willingness to heal. Dr. Emily Splichal, Podiatrist and Human Movement Specialist, is the mind behind Naboso. With a spirit to challenge conformity, Dr. Splichal has taken her conventional Podiatric Medical degree and combined it with years of experience and expertise in human movement and sensory science to found Naboso.Dr. Splichal believes that our experience in this world is built around sensory stimulation and our ability to process, perceive, and integrate this information effectively. Since 2012, Dr. Splichal has been traveling the world to share her unique approach to human movement, foot function, and barefoot science. Having taught in 35 countries and to 20,000 professionals, Dr. Splichal has quickly become a global leader in barefoot training and rehabilitation. The concept behind Naboso and its proprioceptive products came from Dr. Splichal's global travels and the realization that little has changed as far as surface science and insole design. To date, most of the focus has been on minimal footwear and barefoot training. However, what our feet are touching is just as important as switching our shoes or going minimal. This led to the evolution of a material that could stimulate the nerves in our feet, allowing us to get even more out of human function and performance. The potential applications of enhanced foot sensory stimulation are limitless. From optimizing a child's sensory stimulation during their peak window of neuroplasticity to rehabbing an athlete who just suffered a concussion, Dr. Splichal is ready to impact the world and share her passion for the belief that #LifeIsSensory.Use code: innercircle for 20% off naboso products at www.naboso.com. This week, Karen Klak joins The Inner Circle to share her story of grief, learning, and loving. Karen is an introverted person by nature, but those who know her well are familiar with her inability to tell a story without a long introduction, to set the scene and copious detail, to paint a clear picture. Karen is captivated by the stories of others, the deep, personal, and often challenging stories that shape our lives and make them the beautiful and complex people that we all are. She has spent the last many years sharing her story and supporting others in sharing their journeys in the medical world. Karen's work is her passion, and she credits her daughter, Haley, for setting her on this unexpected path.Within the span of six years, Karen and her husband Greg had four children. She became a medical mom when Haley was 17 months old. She grew into that role over time, then became a bereaved parent when Haley died at age 11. Regardless, she is and always will be a mother of four. This week's story is a heart wrenching one, but also arguably one of the most impactful. Karen is a beautiful soul with so much wisdom to give, and her daughter Haley's journey is both so inspirational and so unfair. This story of grief is one we may not all know, but we can all learn from. Karen has a book out that details her journey with Haley. This wonderful book describes the gratefulness she has for the doctors who treated Haley with such love and care, and gives us a compassionate, detailed look at what it's like to have a family member who is a regular at the hospital. Stephen founded The Luxus Group in 2007 and through his role as President has been primarily responsible for the vision of the Company directly overseeing the growth, brand development, strategy, philanthropic endeavors and corporate culture of the organization. Before starting his career, Stephen attended the University of Idaho on a golf scholarship where he pursued an education in finance and accounting. During the summer breaks, Stephen remained active in Edmonton by owning and operating two small businesses, laying the foundation for a life of entrepreneurship. It was through this experience Stephen discovered his passion as a business owner, and immediately after University jumped into his career in the retail industry. At the age of 26 Stephen and his wife Carrie Doll were starting their family with the birth of their first child, Kash. It was at this point in the journey that they quickly became frustrated with traditional travel methods such as hotels and vacation rentals, which no longer fit their family's needs. They thought, “wouldn't it be nice to own a collection of personal vacation properties?”; but this dream was far from reality. Blissfully unaware of the obstacles in front of them, they set out on a path to innovate the very traditional vacation real estate space with the ultimate goal of systemizing and scaling Co-Ownership of vacation properties. Unknowing at the time, this aspirational dream would be realized in 2007 with the founding of The Luxus Group. Originally beginning with 18 friends and family who supported Stephen on this journey, the group quickly grew to over 400 Co-Owners collectively owning over 50 vacation properties around the world.Stephen attests this rapid growth to the collective desire of all who want to ‘travel better'. This vision is shared by the Luxus team and most importantly the hundreds of Co-Owners who have chosen to support this innovative approach to vacation home ownership. Now 15 years young, The Luxus Group's vision has extended into equally exciting endeavors, including the Co-Ownership of restored Tuscan farmhouses, a membership-based luxury fishing lodge, and a developments division with offices in the US and Italy. No matter what the space within the real estate industry that Luxus targets, the goal is always the same; “Connect with people's passions, and be the only one in the space doing it”. As there is no pre-established road map to success when creating a new product from scratch, every opportunity needs a new playbook. Despite the challenges of this approach, it ultimately results in no traditional competition to these offerings. While The Luxus Group's mission to innovate segments of the real estate industry has created jobs, triggered economic impact, and resulted in tens of thousands of direct client experiences, it has not come without its challenges. When attempting to create something new out of nothing, there will be failures along the way. While defeating at times, failure is a necessary by-product of innovation. Over the 15-year journey there have been many humbling moments like this that have threatened the Luxus mission. As challenging as these moments may be, Stephen believes failures are best honoured by allowing them to be your teacher, otherwise they can consume you. Only by learning from past mistakes, can you truly find success on the other side. Despite a busy career and family life, Stephen remains active in the community and is proud to have been involved with several local charities and community task forces; including, the current Chair of EIA Business Advisory Committee, past Stollery Children's Hospital Board Member, and a member of the incubator board that founded the economic development agency, Edmonton Global. Beyond career and community, the true foundation of Stephen's passion lies with his family. Wife Carrie, son Kash, and daughter Allegra were the inspiration for founding The Luxus Group, and always will remain the fuel for living life to the fullest. Lauren Regula's first appearance with softball Team Canada came at the 1999 Junior World Championships in Taipei. She joined the senior national team in 2002, helping Canada to a ninth-place finish at the world championships. She made her Olympic debut at Athens 2004, starting five games and being in the winning pitcher in all three of Canada's victories. Following a fifth-place finish at the 2006 World Championships, Regula missed the entire 2007 season with a wrist injury. But she was healthy enough to return to the Olympic Games at Beijing 2008, helping Canada to a fourth-place finish as she recorded two victories. After the heartbreaking loss in the bronze medal game in Beijing, Regula retired and didn't pick up a ball for eight years. She started a family, having three kids. She has since been open about the postpartum depression she began to suffer from in 2012. It continued until 2018 when she says she hit “rock bottom” and finally got the help she needed in the form of therapy and hormone therapy. After a long road to recovery, she has said she feels like she has “a new lease on life”. It was in 2016, while she was still struggling with postpartum depression, that Regula came out of retirement and pitched her way back to a starting role with Team Canada, winning a bronze medal at the WBSC World Championships. In late 2018, she suffered a small tear in her left hip labrum and did not throw again until she was invited to join Canada's training camp from which the 2020 Olympic team would be selected. In her third Olympic appearance, Regula pitched 5.1 innings in three games. She struck out seven and did not give up a single hit or run as Canada won the bronze medal. Regula played collegiately at Oklahoma State University, primarily as a pitcher but also in the outfield when not on the circle. Over her four seasons with the Cowgirls she was a member of the All-Big12 conference team each year. In her senior season in 2003, she struck out 451 batters on her way to a 26-10 record, was awarded the OSU Female Athlete of the Year and named a First Team All-American. After having finished at OSU, Regula joined the National Pro Fastpitch league for two seasons. She posted the first no-hitter in Chicago Bandits history in 2005 on her way to a 17-1 record, earning Pitcher of the Year honours. In this episode, Lauren breaks down her struggles with guilt over being away for the Games, her love of her family, what gives her strength and drive, and shares the importance of perseverance in the face of hardship. She's such an inspiration, sharing lessons we can all apply in our every day life about the importance of showing up for yourself, surrounding yourself with people who also support you, and giving yourself the grace to be the best version of you that you can be. James Shapiro obtained his medical degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and trained in surgery at the University of Bristol. After coming to Canada in 1993, he received training in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Alberta, and earned a PhD in Experimental Surgery. Shapiro developed a brand new approach to optimize islet cell transplant engraftment that involved a radical departure from previous practice. Of almost 300 islet transplants attempted before 1999, fewer than 10% of these worked in patients. His protocol was designed to address many of the previous shortcomings by transplanting sufficient numbers of islets into the liver by using multiple donors, and by testing a novel anti-rejection strategy that avoided steroids and allowed the transplanted islets to work at their best. The result became known internationally as the ‘Edmonton Protocol.' Shapiro led the clinical team that tested his approach in seven initial patients, all of whom (100%) were able to discontinue the need for insulin injections for periods beyond a year. He was the lead author in the landmark paper published in July, 2000 that described these results. Since then, he and his team have transplanted almost 300 Canadians and have continued to refine and optimize the protocol. This treatment has been replicated many times internationally, and over 2000 patients worldwide have now received islet transplants using the backbone of his protocol. A large ‘registration' trial conducted in Canada and the USA reported its positive findings in 2016 in the Journal Diabetes Care. Countries including England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Australia, and Canada have approved and funded islet transplantation as part of ‘standard of care' for patients with brittle, difficult-to-control, forms of Type 1 diabetes. Since the development of the Edmonton Protocol, he has led or co-led three major ongoing international multicentre clinical trials to further improve islet transplantation outcomes. He leads the Edmonton team, which is the largest islet transplantation team worldwide. Shapiro also led the first-in-human stem cell transplant trials in Edmonton, Canada in 2014, and continues to refine stem cell transplantation approaches in patients. So far these studies are proving both promising and safe when tested in Canadians. In his basic science laboratory, Professor Shapiro developed a new means to transplant cells beneath the skin by using a temporary tube to induce new blood vessels to grow. Before then, islet transplants beneath the skin failed universally, but this treatment is now known as the ‘Deviceless Technique'. In liver transplantation research, Shapiro and his team recently conducted two trials in Edmonton of a new machine designed to incubate and keep donated human livers alive outside the body before transplantation. This technology is radically altering our ability to rescue damaged livers and provide safer livers for transplant. It is also allowing these transplants to happen during regular daylight hours. Professor Shapiro further led a cross-Canadian research team to test similar technologies in heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplantations as part of the Canadian National Transplant Research Project. His busy research lab is currently working on more than 30 projects and 15 human clinical trials. One is an exciting immune reset trial. In this study, people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are given a combination of targeted medications designed to reset their immune system and repair the pancreas. Besides maintaining an active immunology/transplant research laboratory, Dr. Shapiro has a busy clinical practice specializing in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, surgical oncology, as well as transplant surgery, and was featured in an internationally acclaimed movie about organ transplantation called ‘Memento Mori.' A shorter length version of this called ‘Vital Bonds' was aired last year across Canada by the CBC's David Suzuki's 'The Nature of Things'. An edited version called ‘Transplanting Hope' has been aired across the USA as part of PBS. This movie is helping to raise awareness about organ donation. In 1992, five young friends and entrepreneurs with a passion for building a unique niche in the home furnishings industry founded Budget Blinds. Brent Hallock, his twin brother Chad, Tony Forbes, Todd Jackson, and David Lewis banded together to dedicate themselves to the lifestyle they'd dreamed of. In the early years, they ran Budget Blinds out of a small apartment. By combining their industry experience and people skills, they pounded the pavement the old-fashioned way to grow the company into what it is today—America's #1 window coverings franchise with over 1,000 consultants throughout the U.S. and Canada. When they finally decided to sell the company, it sold for $500 million. With extensive knowledge and experience in the home improvement industry, each of the founders brought their individual strengths to the table and remained involved in the day-to-day operations. Brent dives into the story of the company's inception, the equal split attitude all the co-founders adopted, how the day to day work was handled, and so much more. He has remained humble, kind, and caring throughout this journey; money has not changed him. His gratitude is apparent, and his smiley demeanor is contagious, and he is one heck of a success story. We often do not see the opportunities that will grace our lives and take us on a path far better than we could ever dream of and for Southern California native Chef Lawrence Duran, that is exactly what happened. Becoming a Chef was inevitable, but becoming a personal chef for The Wahlbergs was destiny. As a child growing up in the valley of the Angels, before he could call himself ‘Chef'', Lawrence Duran endured the subtle pressure of cooking for himself. With his mother working long hours and a grumbling tummy, he knew he had to eat. McDonalds would suffice many nights, but his taste buds yearned for more – something home cooked, so he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. His hands were his tools and his imagination was the fuel to his kitchen masterpieces. He drew inspiration from Julia Childs and Thomas Keller while they played on the television, but his biggest inspiration is his grandmother. He remembers being on the kitchen floor playing with pots and pans while she prepared and cooked for their family. “We have a large family. With 7 kids of her own and several grandchildren, she was always cooking. Every time someone would walk through the door, she would make sure they had something to eat”. As Lawrence grew older, he continued to learn his grandmothers' methods of cooking and incorporated them into his own unique style, ultimately molding him into the chef he is today. During the latter years of his education, Duran transferred high schools and went on to live with his father. Entering a new high school was not the most ideal situation for him, but little did he know, he was exactly where he was supposed to be. He befriended a boy named Christian, who happened to be the son of the owner of a very well-known catering company in Los Angeles and after graduation, Lawrence began working for Christian's fathers catering company. Simultaneously he worked in construction which funded his time at The Kitchen Academy in Hollywood in the evenings. Juggling construction and culinary school was difficult, but he knew nothing great comes without hard work, so he resiliently continued. As fate would have it, Mark Wahlberg was in need of a private chef and was friends with the owner of the catering company Duran worked for, Mario's Catering Company. Mario highly recommended Lawrence to Mr.Wahlberg and Mr.Wahlberg agreed to let Lawrence demonstrate his skill level. He would work construction from 3am – 1pm then prep and serve The Wahlberg's from 3pm-7pm for 6 months until he became full time and quit construction. “Time management is extremely crucial when you're preparing food for multiple people or preparing certain dishes. Giving yourself ample time, even down to one tenth of a second, to get each task done is very important and that's why I love my MTM Predator Watch.” says Duran. “The three chronographs assist me often and allow me to work faster and more precise. Sometimes I feel like I'm a professional multi-tasker” chuckles Duran. “Sure, I know my ingredients beforehand, but everything needs to cook for an exact amount of time. My Predator keeps me on top of it. I rinse off food without the worry of getting it wet, I can bang it on literally anything and it doesn't get scratched or break. This thing is stylish and rugged, that's why I really like it. Special Operations don't just happen in the battlefield, they happen in the kitchen too!” For more on Chef Duran, read up on these Messermeister and Spiceology articles on his renowned cooking skills, or follow him on Instagram. Blair Dorsey started her entrepreneurial career at the age of four when she would draw, make jewelry, or sell other trinkets to the captive audience that worked for her dad. While most kids enjoy taking a break during summer or other school days off, Blair would go to work with her dad and spend her day shadowing different department heads and coming up with business plans. Blair worked her way up in the company and was on the payroll by age eight. Growing up with a father who taught, encouraged, and fostered an entrepreneurial mindset gave Blair the foundation and drive to excel in school so that she could one day be a business leader herself. A California native, Blair grew up in Irvine and graduated top of her class from University High School. From there, Blair continued the family tradition of Trojans and studied at the University of Southern California. Not quite ready for the real world, Blair decided to further her education at Chapman University School of Law where she earned her JD and became a member of the California Bar a few months after graduation. Blair married her high school sweetheart, Donovan, the following May and a year later they started building their family. Donovan and Blair moved to Las Vegas when their first son was one month old and took advantage of the fallen housing market by buying up to seven houses a day at the auction steps. Two and a half years and another son later the economy was on a rebound and the Dorsey's were eager to return to California and to start their next business venture. The Dream Junction is the brainchild of six family members: Dad, Brother Trevor, Aunt Jullie, Uncle Paul, Donovan, and Blair. With Blair leading the way as CEO, The Dream Junction grew from an idea to a multimillion-dollar company within a few short years. Today The Dream Junction does digital printing on textiles for some of the world's largest e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores. Chances are, if you have bought a shirt from a Facebook link or design-your-own site, The Dream Junction was behind the scenes doing both the printing and the fulfillment of your order. With the internal need to constantly improve, innovate, and disrupt, Blair founded another company in 2016 that revolutionized the direct-to-garment printing industry with their invention of the OvalJet printer. The OvalJet is now powering The Dream Junction and has been the belle of the ball at printing and textile conventions world-wide. Today Blair, Donovan, their two sons (ages 6 and 7), and daughter (age 3) live in San Juan Capistrano and spend summers at their home on the lake in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The Dream Junction has an office for the Dorsey kids as they beg to spend time at “the working shop”. Nothing could make Blair happier than continuing the tradition of working along side of her children and teaching them how to be business leaders themselves.
