Orphanage Trafficking - A Real Life Horror Story

Optimistic Voices

When Americans and others living in the global north (aka Westerners) think about trafficking, they tend to have an image of a child being kidnapped by a bad guy, and then sexually exploited.  While that is certainly a trafficking issue, there are all kinds of child trafficking.  You may not have heard of orphanage trafficking before today, but it is real and real life horror story happening all around the world, every single day.It is a genuinely horrific idea to contemplate. It is, simply put, the use of children as commodities by using them to bring profit to a business that is characterized as an orphanage through solicitation of donations, inflated adoption fees, and international charitable tourism expenses, and even direct sales of children or child parts. What is it?  How can a child be trafficked into an orphanage?  Or indeed, out of one?  Isn't an orphanage supposed to be a safe place for - well - orphans? Katie Milazzois a repeat guest on Optimistic Voices, and during Season One of our podcast during November of 2022, she discussed her work with the Child Prosperity Centre. Since that time, the organization she headed up at the time has been transformed and has new supporting organizations, and a new Director, who just happens to be Katie's husband, Johnny Donoghue.   The organization Johnny now heads up is called the Child and Family Permanency Services Centre, and like the program that HCW supports in Sierra Leone, CFPS works to reintegrate children separated from family care back into families, and to strengthen vulnerable families so that they can care for themselves.  CFPS enjoys a stellar reputation in community where they are located, and along with their reintegration work, and because of their focus on child protection issues, have found themselves in a position to witness some pretty terrible orphanage and orphan trafficking in their own community - and have taken steps to address these issues.Katie has stayed in the field of child protection and child welfare, and remained in Sierra Leone. Shd is now a Protection Specialist of Anti-trafficking and Gender Based Violence at World Hope International. World Hope InternationalChild and Family Permanency CentreVideo Presentation by David T. Clark Vandeventer interviews George Beals about Azerbaijan. In 2014, George became the Director of Strategic Development for World Hope International. Before serving with World Hope, George served his local church as the Pastor of Global Ministries for over two decades. He was the very first missions pastor in his denomination. While serving as the missions pastor, his church was involved in sending their people short-term and long-term cross-culturally. George led the church to strategize their part in fulfilling the Great Commission. George earned a Doctor of Applied Intercultural Studies degree with a concentration in International Relief and Development. His research was on training Christian business professionals who are working cross-culturally. George is the director of the missions pastor forum for West Michigan, which brings together mission pastors and mission agency leaders to exchange ideas. In 2019, George participated in the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York City. Sometimes, in humanitarian work, and in relief and development work, we can do more harm than good. I have spent a lot of time thinking about these unintended consequences, and how we can do relief and development work that helps without hurting. I've thought a LOT about this, but George has thought a LOT more than me. He's studied it. And he has experience in it. He's traveled to 45+ countries -- some that no longer exist. In this interview we focus on the country of Azerbaijan. Clark Vandeventer interviews Jo Anne Lyon about the West African nation of Sierra Leone. Jo Anne is amazing -- and has traveled to 88 different countries! That's amazing! ONE INTERESTING THING IN THIS INTERVIEW --> There's some pretty serious division and polarization in the USA today, but nothing compared to what Sierra Leone has faced in the past. Jo Anne talked about how she admires Sierra Leone's ABILITY TO RECOVER FROM A BRUTAL WAR WITH TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION. Additional observations on Sierra Leone being a country where Christians and Muslims peacefully co-exist. As the founder and previous CEO of World Hope International, Jo Anne directed the faith-based relief and development organization into over 30 countries to alleviate suffering and injustice. During her time as CEO, she was involved with several countries experiencing fragility, conflict and violence with a strong focus on the role of faith. Her previous 30 years of pastoral ministry contributed to the effectiveness of the work. Following 12 years of service to World Hope International she was elected as the General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church worldwide. She served in that position for eight years. At the close of her tenure, she was invited to serve as the Ambassador for The Wesleyan Church for the following four years by action of the General Board to retain the considerable connections and influence she has had to extend the influence of the Church. Jo Anne serves on the board of directors of many organizations such as Bread for the World, Vice-Chair of the Board of National Association of Evangelicals, National Religious Partnership for the Environment, Council on Faith of the World Economic Forum, previously President Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and others. She holds a master's degree in Counseling Psychology, continued graduate studies in Historical Theology and has been granted five honorary doctorates. She is an ordained minister of the Wesleyan Church. The recipient of the 2016 “World Methodist Peace Award”, 2017 “Keeper of the American Dream Award” from the National Immigration Forum in Washington DC as well as various other awards. Dr. Lyon and her husband, Rev. Wayne Lyon, live in the Indianapolis area. They have four children and 10 grandchildren. If you want to know more about Jo Anne, just google her. On today's program, the president of Bob Jones University resigns in what some media reports have called a coup by some of the hardline fundamentalist board members at the school. We also look at the remarkable growth of the relief and development ministry Convoy of Hope. We also look at why so many ministry leaders have been resigning lately.  Is it part of a trend, and – if so – why? We begin today with a major lawsuit against the United Methodist Church. More than 180 churches have joined together to sue the North Georgia Conference and its leaders, seeking to leave The United Methodist Church with property. It's the most congregations that have banded together in a single lawsuit since the denomination began undergoing a slow-motion separation several years ago. FINAL THOUGHTS:  I want our listeners to know that on April 26 I'll be doing a webinar I'm calling “Ask Me Anything.”  When we've done webinars in the past, we always have a Q&A time, and often we get questions that have nothing to do with the topic of the webinar, so I decided to schedule a webinar where you could – as the title suggests – “Ask Me Anything.” Check your inbox in the next week or so for an invitation to this webinar.  It's absolutely free, but you will need to register to get links and additional information. I also want to mention that I've got a bit of travel coming up in the next few months.  I'll be in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, next week, and I'm hosting a lunch for donors, readers, and listeners on Wednesday.  If you live in Pennsylvania, you should have already received an invitation.  Again, it's free, but you will need to sign up to get details (and so I can let the restaurant know how many people we'll have.) In May I'll be in Orlando, Florida, for the annual convention of the National Religious Broadcasters.  We'll be doing a reader and listener lunch there, as well.  Again, check your inbox for details. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh.  We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Shannon Cuthrell, Heather Hahn, Kim Roberts, Steve Rabey, Bob Smietana, Christina Darnell and Warren Smith. Special thanks to UM News, Covenant College, and World Hope International for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you…and Happy Easter.  He is risen indeed!

This is a great episode for those who are thinking of moving away from old models of international aid to promote a shift away from dependency on external donors. Our guests discuss how AFO went about undertaking this sea-change decision to repurpose a gorgeous new building intended to be a 200-bed orphanage planned for the national capital city of Freetown. Katie and Lucy share specific experiences and practical details of How Western Partners can operate to embrace the shift and partner in programs that focus on  building capacity in the community to care for their ownHow to effectively partner with other organizations (i.e., Helping Children Worldwide, Child Reintegration Centre, World Hope International) with radical honesty and radical collaboration to share experiences, resources, expertise and fill gaps rather than working in silos and duplicating efforts. How fund and resource development is “everybody's job” in nonprofits and how to leverage story-telling by program professionals to explain the value of investment to donors in shifting to family support and capacity-building models, and supporting greater collaboration and networking of knowledge and resources to increase impact.Shifting the philanthropic philosophy that motivates donors from “I feel bad” for the needy to “I feel like a partner” in making the world work well for everybody. All for OneChild Prosperity CentreWorld Hope InternationalHelpingchildrenworldwide.org

The Sexual Violence Research Podcast

The mental health impacts of sexual violence, abuse and exploitation are complex. To ensure the effectiveness of our mental health interventions post violence we need an intersectional understanding of the multiple manifestations of trauma. Whilst the diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder provides a framework to understand the process of trauma in survivors of sexual violence, to develop truly effective treatments, we also need to look at complex trauma. In this episode we find out what complex trauma is and why it's so important we understand it, we learn about the mental health symptoms that stem from sexual violence, including online sexual exploitation, and we find out about the importance of mind-body approaches to healing after sexual violence. Our guests are Adesty Dulawan, clinical supervisor of World Hope International in the Philippines and teacher, researcher and mental health counsellor Abbie Fields. Find out more at svri.org.

In this long-form conversation, General Superintendent Emerita and Ambassador of The Wesleyan Church Jo Anne Lyon talks about the life and work of John Wesley who, much like Jesus, ministered at the intersection of spiritual, cultural, and political change. It’s in that light she reflects on the question of the church’s role in policy, as well as her participation as a member of the Council on Faith in the World Economic Forum, examining how faith affects the health and prosperity of nations. Jo Anne also speaks frankly about what the Bible has to say about the roles of women in the church, how early feminism – and its backlash – shaped those roles over the last several decades, and where the church is headed from here. “We need to come back and reclaim who we are,” she says. And don’t miss her reflections on racial justice, compassion, common ground, and the next generation of believers. Dr. Lyon holds a master's degree in counseling and has been granted five honorary doctorates. She authored the book The Ultimate Blessing and has served over 30 years in pastoral ministry. She has been an adjunct professor at both Indiana Wesleyan University and Asbury Theological Seminary. As the founder and CEO of World Hope International, she directed the faith-based relief and development organizations into over 30 countries to alleviate suffering and injustice.

The historical accounts are a bit fuzzy, but the way the story is commonly told, Caribbean slaves in the 18th century gained a day of freedom two times a year, on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) and New Year’s Day. They made costumes and played music to celebrate, and over the centuries, that tradition evolved into what’s now know as the annual Junkanoo festival, an all-night parade through the streets that’s been compared to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnival in Brazil. On this episode of Far From Home, I visit Nassau in The Bahamas, which is home to the largest and most well-known of the celebrations. I speak with several participants to learn more about the festival and why they look forward to it each year around this time. Visit my website to see some photos and videos my brother took when we attended the Junkanoo Festival a number of years ago. When Dr. Jo Anne Lyon, General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church, was tasked with leading the charge on her denomination's restructuring, she knew she needed to start with listening to her staff at a grassroots level. She then used that feedback to reshape the culture and bring about unity during a time of extreme change. As we'll see in today's interview, that unity and clarity around vision, mission and goals can lead to some truly divine outcomes. In the 8 years since The Wesleyan Church distilled their efforts into three clear goals (to increase attendance, conversions and baptisms), the number of worship attendees, new followers of Christ and baptisms has increased 30 percent in North America. Prior to being elected as the General Superintendent in 2008, Jo Anne founded World Hope International, an organization to alleviate suffering and injustice through education, enterprise and community health. As she travels the world, Jo Anne serves her denomination and several boards.
