Florida's new law takes effect July 1st. 

Since its inception, The Salvation Army has been at the forefront of the fight against human trafficking around the world, including in the Western U.S., where the organization served 183 trafficking survivors in 2023.   Globally, the International Labor Organization reported nearly 28 million people in forced labor situations in 2021. In the Western U.S., The Salvation Army's efforts are supported by 13 anti-trafficking programs, bolstered by local and international partners. It's through this collaboration, The Salvation Army can respond to provide aid in these often life-threatening situations.   Last year, The Salvation Army Western Territory trained nearly 2,500 individuals, to identify and respond to trafficking situations. Anti-human trafficking can be an uncomfortable topic. We've all seen trafficking situations in movies or on the news, but we tend to feel like it is something far away.   But unfortunately, that is simply not true. In fact, the United States is one of the top buyers within the trafficking industry.   The Prevention Project was created to start tackling this complicated issue through a demographic that can truly make an impact.   The program empowers youth to protect themselves and others through education and helps equip the next generation of leaders to build safer communities.   Sheena Evans, territorial services coordinator for anti-human trafficking, realized that through The Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Clubs are a perfect place to begin this educational program.   The goal is to continue educating the youth in our communities through the Prevention Project and other well-vetted human trafficking awareness and education curricula.   Learn more at https://www.prevention-project.org/

In her incomparably gentle way, Naomi also draws our attention to the importance of little acts of kindness as we share the light of Christ with a world in need, one person at a time, one next-door neighbor at a time. Naomi reminds us that the things that flatten us, break us, shred us are the perfect setting for God to use us. “This life will break us, and we will not have all the answers we long for. He will sit with us through it, and this is not the end of the story.” Naomi reminds us that our stories matter especially when they are not (yet) tied up with a pretty bow and ending. We live most of our lives in the middle of the unresolved stories. And the places that don't make sense force us to believe that faith matters in the middle of the darkness, the desert, the valley. Naomi reminds us of the importance of the body of Christ, and also that church hurt is real. We need community, and we have a deep desire to right the wrongs of this world. We also have so much at our fingertips to bring healing to the ones right around us. MORE ABOUT NAOMI ZACHARIAS Naomi Zacharias received a BA in Business/Economics from Wheaton College. Her first job out of college was in Brand Development for Chick Fil A and she soon transitioned to Sales for The Coca-Cola Company to accept what was her perceived dream job. It was fantastic training under a superb manager, but a restlessness remained. She moved into the non-profit sector, seeking to apply herself to a cause she believed in. Following an internship in the Office of Public Liaison at the White House where she helped to organize presidential briefings for constituency groups, Naomi considered staying in Washington DC to focus on international justice issues. Instead, in a decision that surprised herself, she declined an opportunity at the US Department of Justice to return to Atlanta in 2004 to develop and launch a humanitarian initiative with a robust application process to evaluate international grant requests and distribute approximately 16M USD in grant funding over 16 years for rehabilitation for victims of human trafficking, healthcare, education, poverty-related issues, war-related issues, support for victims of domestic violence and gender-based violence, refugee aid and issues related to child welfare and orphan care in approximately 17 countries. This work led her into refugee and displacement camps in Africa and the Middle East, brothels in Southeast Asia and Europe, women's prisons in Africa, medical clinics for HIV care, hospitals for patients with leprosy in Asia, and children's homes around the world to witness significant realities of human tragedy as well as resources, programs, and people affecting redemptive and restorative change. In 2021, together with her team, Naomi launched a new grant making entity, Third Ladder, where she now serves as Executive Director. Naomi has loved seeing parts of the world, savoring cultures, foods, and human connection. She is an introvert who loves being with her family and small circle of close friends. Her primary purpose is to love her children and niece fiercely with a desire to help them uncover beauty in a complicated world and discover who they were intended to be. She has published widely on the topic of religion and international development. She is the author of 'Religions and Development' (2013), published by Routledge,  and the editor of the 'Routledge Handbook on Religions and Global Development' (2015). She currently co-chairs the JLI Learning Hub on Anti-Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery, and has partnered with the JLI on a number of projects. The most recent of these is a study to better understand the impact of discourses about decolonisation and localisation on the experiences and activities of  faith actors who contribute towards development. Human trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labour, or commercial sex act. It's a horrific crime that often targets and exploits vulnerable populations. Many of us get our understanding of human trafficking from the movies, but the crimes are very real AND are happening right here in this province. Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. We live most of our lives in the middle of the unresolved stories. And the places that don't make sense force us to believe that faith matters in the middle of the darkness, the desert, the valley. Naomi reminds us of the importance of the body of Christ, and also that church hurt is real. We need community, and we have a deep desire to right the wrongs of this world. We also have so much at our fingertips to bring healing to the ones right around us. MORE ABOUT NAOMI ZACHARIAS Naomi Zacharias received a BA in Business/Economics from Wheaton College. Her first job out of college was in Brand Development for Chick Fil A and she soon transitioned to Sales for The Coca-Cola Company to accept what was her perceived dream job. It was fantastic training under a superb manager, but a restlessness remained. She moved into the non-profit sector, seeking to apply herself to a cause she believed in. Following an internship in the Office of Public Liaison at the White House where she helped to organize presidential briefings for constituency groups, Naomi considered staying in Washington DC to focus on international justice issues. Instead, in a decision that surprised herself, she declined an opportunity at the US Department of Justice to return to Atlanta in 2004 to develop and launch a humanitarian initiative with a robust application process to evaluate international grant requests and distribute approximately 16M USD in grant funding over 16 years for rehabilitation for victims of human trafficking, healthcare, education, poverty-related issues, war-related issues, support for victims of domestic violence and gender-based violence, refugee aid and issues related to child welfare and orphan care in approximately 17 countries. This work led her into refugee and displacement camps in Africa and the Middle East, brothels in Southeast Asia and Europe, women's prisons in Africa, medical clinics for HIV care, hospitals for patients with leprosy in Asia, and children's homes around the world to witness significant realities of human tragedy as well as resources, programs, and people affecting redemptive and restorative change. In 2021, together with her team, Naomi launched a new grant making entity, Third Ladder, where she now serves as Executive Director. Naomi has loved seeing parts of the world, savoring cultures, foods, and human connection. She is an introvert who loves being with her family and small circle of close friends. Her primary purpose is to love her children and niece fiercely with a desire to help them uncover beauty in a complicated world and discover who they were intended to be. We know you probably are all aware that the Arnold Classic is coming back to town this week. Dr. Griffith-Hunte has been a Queen's community advocate since 2000. She is a senior legislative advisor who works with key government officials and organizations to advocate for legislation to create favorable changes in education, human rights, mental health, domestic violence, human trafficking, anti-gang measures, and community engagement. She is the Vice President of Training and Director of Anti-Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence for Not On My Watch (Queens and LI). She was instrumental in advocating for the -"End Child Sex Trafficking Bill" signed into law in 2018. This week Dr. Griffith-Hunte joined me on an enlightened thought-provoking conversation. On this week's podcast, we are sharing an interview done by the 'Save Our Children Podcast' featuring our very own host of 'The Imagination', Emma Pietrzak. We have not yet shared a lot of the inspiration behind The Survivor Series and Bridget and Becky do a great job asking questions and bringing light to the messages and purpose we have behind creating this podcast.  As an anti-human trafficking and -SRA activist, Emma wanted a way to put action behind her words in the movement to abolish the crimes against our children being committed globally. Upon looking herself for podcasts discussing the topics of human trafficking and SRA, she was distraught that she could hardly find anyone talking about these subjects publicly. To solve this problem, Emma decided to take it upon herself to feature the stories on her podcast and to deliver the information straight from the experts in these topics - Survivors themselves. In this episode, we discuss more of the inspiration behind 'The Imagination Survivor Series', the dangers and consequences of being an activist and being vocal about these controversial topics, finding courage and strength in having hard conversations and bearing the weight, how building a relationship with God is key, and so much more!
