We mark the 100th episode of Secular Left with a reading from the show manifesto that was read in Episode 1 in April 2020. We highlight its birth during a tumultuous time marked by political uncertainty and a public health crisis. The initial goal was to provide a platform to voice critical perspectives against the tide of misinformation and extreme conservatism proliferating in mainstream discourse, especially during the latter stages of the 1st Trump administration. We also revisit memorable moments throughout the first episodes, like the establishment of our guiding manifesto, which articulates our commitment to progressive values and the importance of secularism in navigating social issues. Our guest is Dr. Juhem Navarro-Rivera, Political scientist and partner at Socialanalitica Research, who walks us through the latest Pew Research Religious Landscape Survey. He sheds light on the trends reflected in the Pew survey, most notably the rise of what he terms "cradle seculars." This demographic, comprised of individuals raised without religious affiliation who remain non-religious into adulthood, is growing at an unprecedented rate. The survey indicates an impressive upward trajectory: from 16% of the population identifying as secular in 2007 to nearly 29% in 2024. This surge challenges long-standing assumptions about religious identity, suggesting that many young people are increasingly less likely to return to religious practices as they age.Delving into methodological considerations, Dr. Navarro-Rivera discusses the shift from telephone surveys to more inclusive methods incorporating online and paper formats. This change may have important implications for survey responses, particularly concerning sensitive topics like religious affiliation. We explore the effect of social stigma on reporting non-religious identities, emphasizing the need for transparency in polling methodologies to achieve more accurate insights. As we unpack the nuances of the survey, our guest emphasizes the significance of understanding the growing secular identity not merely in terms of percentages but as a profound cultural shift representing approximately 76 million individuals in the U.S. We examine the evolving landscape of religious affiliation, noting a decline in Christian identification among younger demographics, and discuss how these trends can inform strategies for fostering secular communities that resonate with new generations.Full Show Notes & LinksSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

In our second multi-grantee episode, we hear from three organizations who identify their work with kīpuka: regenerative spaces that help reseed and regrow the areas around them. First, we hear from Mehana Vaughan and Jennifer Luck from Kīpuka Kuleana (featured in episode 2), which perpetuates kuleana, ahupua'a-based natural resource management and connection to place through protection of cultural landscapes and family lands on Kaua'i. Next, we visit Kuhialoko and hear from Iokepa and Kalei Miner (featured in episode 43). Kuhialoko works to restore a sense of community ownership and kuleana to an area riddled by a prolonged history of military occupation and displacement near Puʻuloa. Finally, Anthony Deluze and Dani Espiritu speak to us at Kaʻōnohi about Hōʻola Hou Iā Kalauao (featured in episode 75), which revives and brings life to Kalauao, an ahupuaʻa in the moku of ʻEwa on the island of Oʻahu. Today on The Career Flipper, host Jenny Dempsey is chatting with Michael Mattson, whose career journey is a perfect example of how small, intentional shifts can lead to massive transformations. Michael started out as a mail carrier, delivering letters door to door—and yes, getting to pet all the dogs along the way! But beyond the friendly pups, he saw firsthand the importance of both customer and employee experience, which set him on a path of discovery and career growth. With a high-empathy mindset, Michael made small leaps that took him from the frontlines of the postal service into a corporate customer experience role, and eventually across the country to become the Manager of Customer Experience for a global organization. He now also serves on advisory boards for multiple CX organizations, helping shape the future of the field. In this episode, we dive into:The power of mentorship and why you shouldn't be afraid to lean on your networkWhy employee experience matters just as much as customer experienceThe importance of finding the right workplace culture for long-term happinessHow small, calculated risks can open unexpected doorsThe delicate balance between career ambitions and personal passions—and why Michael chose to keep photography as a creative outlet rather than a jobHow embracing vulnerability at work can strengthen professional relationshipsMichael's story is a reminder that career changes don't have to happen all at once—sometimes, it's the little shifts that add up to something big.Connect with Michael

Recovery, Identity & Advocacy with Vanessa Harry On this episode of the Make Mental Health Matter Show, Kelli chats with Vanessa Harry. Bit of the story from Vanessa: “Growing up as the first in our family to be born with 50% Cherokee blood line, having a father who was full blood and a mother who was not part of the Cherokee Nation. Raised in poverty in rural Oklahoma, spending a lifetime with mental health struggles, trauma, abandonment issues, many failed suicide attempts, gender identity, and a 30 year battle with substance addiction that led me to a 10 year prison sentence where my recovery journey truly began. I have worked in the treatment and recovery industry since 2021 and am passionate about bringing awareness and change to our community by helping stop stigma, providing a greater connection of available resources to those in need while showing the world the power of stepping out of the shadows and letting our voices shine. I live my life as a proud survivor who recovers out loud for myself and my community!” Vanessa (she/they) proudly identifies as being a transgender female who is extremely active in her long-term sustained recovery.
