Where to Stay in the Turks and Caicos

Tamara recently took a travel agent FAM trip to Turks and Caicos and spent two nights at The Palms and two nights at The Shore Club. She also visited many other properties and today she shares her insights into each to help you decide where to stay in Turks and Caicos. Episode Highlights Turks and Caicos is known for its beautiful beaches and not for all-inclusives or as a party island Most of the hotels have great accommodations for families with 1, 2, 3-bedroom accommodations and up (including villa rentals) When arriving, be prepared for a long wait at passport control/immigration. Expect about an hour and longer on the weekends. When departing, leave 2-3 hours to get checked in and wait in the security line. There isn't a lot of room in the gate area but there is an area upstairs that has more space. To save time at the airport, you can pay for Fast Track access starting at $75 per person, each way. Private transfers from the airport are about $150 each way, but cabs can be $30+ per person for shared taxis. Taxis throughout the island are priced per person and are pricey. It is about a 15-20 minute drive from the PLS (Providenciales) to most of the hotels The Palms is on Grace Bay Beach (the most famous beach on the island). It is a luxury hotel with a lush, garden-like setting right on the beach. The style and decor is similar to Sandy Lane in Barbados, a colonial or plantation style. Tamara stayed in a one-bedroom suite oceanfront, which was huge with a full kitchen, living room, laundry, dining room, large balcony, bedroom with tons of closet space, and one and one-half bathrooms. They recently did a renovation at The Palms of rooms but also of the pool area and added a new pool/beach restaurant and pool bar (including a swim-up bar). The restaurants at The Palms were very good. Parallel 23 is fine dining and Sisi is modern Mexican. The Palms also has one of the best spas in the Caribbean The high season is during Festive (winter holidays) and President's Day weekend. The low season would be July-September Pricing in the Caribbean is quite high. The Shore Club is across the island on Long Bay Beach. There is a beach-to-beach package so that you can split your week vacation between the two properties. Long Bay Beach is breezy and very popular for kite surfing. The beach itself is narrow but long and The Shore Club has plenty of space to spread out. The water here is very calm and you can walk out very far, especially at low tide. Shore Club is also a luxury hotel and it has a sophisticated feel. There are villas and multi-bedroom accommodations that would be amazing for a girls' trip or multi-generational vacation. The one-bedroom oceanfront suite is huge and great for families with teens because there is a study that has a pull-out couch, full bathroom, and closets and a door that closes off from the rest of the space. There is another pull out couch in the living room. There is a sushi restaurant and a comfort food restaurant, plus pool bars and restaurants. There is a shuttle between the properties and also the four-star Sands property and guests have signing privileges for all the restaurants. The Alexandra Resort is a four-star, all-inclusive on Grace Bay next to The Palms with multi-bedroom suites and restaurants The Wymara Resort has a South Beach, sexy vibe that would be great for couples and honeymooners but the rooms are a bit smaller The Ritz-Carlton is a high-rise hotel with a smaller beach. The second tower is for Ritz-Carlton Residences and you can't use or earn points for the Residences. They are building an Andaz and St. Regis on Turks and Caicos now too. The H20 Resort on Long Bay Beach is a small boutique hotel that is good for people that are independent travelers and enjoy watersports as they have a kite surfing school and tons of rentals. Tamara is going back to Turks and Caicos in the fall for a Family Travel Association conference at Beaches Turks and Caicos (stay tuned!!) On Thursday nights there is a fish fry with food trucks, music, and artisans/souvenir vendors. The Junkanoo band performs and it is such a lot of fun. You can island hop by ferry or plane (but there is a separate terminal for domestic flights) You can also go scuba diving, snorkeling, charter a boat for fishing or island hopping, or boat out to the tiki bar off Long Bay Beach.

Always the Disney fashionistas, Mickey and Minnie are getting new designer clothes for the opening of Lookout Cay later this year. This story, plus Celebrate Soulfully styles and what to pack for your February 2024 Walt Disney World vacation. Bahamian fashion designer, Theodore Elyett, styles Mickey and Minnie for their Disney Cruise Lookout Cay Debut Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse turned to Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett for their brand new outfits to celebrate the opening of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Not surprisingly, the outfits have a distinct Bahamian flair, inspired by the bright and colorful spirit of Junkanoo, which is a Bahamas festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades.“The beauty of Mickey and Minnie's looks are that they are literally ‘Junkanoo Fun in the Sun,'” said Mr. Elyett. “When you talk about the print, pattern, color, texture of Junkanoo, they've got that.”As with just about everything Disney, the details matter. Raffia is a natural material made from the leaves of Raffia palm trees and it's used in The Bahamas to decorate accessories. Eleuthera is known for its pineapples. So if you look close, you'll see that both of these details are found in Mickey and Minnie's looks. It's not just Mickey and Minnie who will receive fresh new styles, Theodore Elyett will also design unique outfits for Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip ‘n' Dale to wear at Lookout Cay. All of this will debut in the summer of 2024.--Dress in Style to Celebrate Soulfully at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort Celebrate Soulfully is on in February to celebrate Black History Month at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. There are so many ways that you can get into the spirit when it comes to your vacation and park style for this event. If you want to take the musical route, you can take a page from Disney's Soul. Another great inspiration is the 1920s jazz era, which make styles from Tiana and Disney's Princess and the Frog a good fit. If dressing up for Disney Parks is not your style (meaning you're not likely to be seen taking part in Disney Dapper Days), then a graphic t-shirt featuring a sax, piano or other jazz or soul musical instrument is good way to add a touch of soulful theming to your park style. Even concerts t-shirts from your favorite jazz, soul, blues or other musicians would be a perfect fit.-- What to Wear at Walt Disney World in February Always check the weather using a local Orlando weather station right before your trip to get the most accurate view of the weather you may have. While rain is hard to predict in Orlando, the temperatures are usually a little more reliable (at least as a good guideline). If you have a Walt Disney World vacation planned for February, here's what to consider when planning your wardrobe. While Florida weather can vary greatly and change on a moment's notice, February tends to lean towards cooler temperatures and cooler evenings. With the long-term forecast for February 2024 offering up daytime highs from the upper 50sF to the upper 70sF, it will really depend on when your vacation is taking place. Evening temperatures have an even wider range: from upper 30sF to upper 60sF. These wide swings are typical of transition months, but they can cause you fits when deciding exactly what you need to pack. While you may still get away with shorts and t-shirts during the day, be sure to pack a light jacket, hoodie or sweatshirt for the evening hours. It can get cool at night, so jeans/pants or leggings are also good to bring along. Rain may also impact your stay. It used to be that rain was a rarity for the winter months in Orlando, but that is no longer the case as the global climate and weather patterns continue to change.--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel Style PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, we that you enjoyed it. In some locales, the period between Christmas and the New Year is known as the Wild Nights, where mischief reigns in the darkest days of the northern hemisphere. We're digging into this theme for our last show of 2022, in a chat with photographer and producer of this very podcast, Jill Waterman, who has been documenting New Year's Eve traditions and exploits around the globe for the past 38 years. We first spoke with Jill about this project in the two-part show Legacy and Commitment in January 2022. Since she's now a full-fledged member of the podcast team, we thought we'd investigate some of her more memorable experiences a bit further. Jill is still shooting this series primarily with film, so our conversation ranges from the whys and wherefores of making that choice, to how the growth of the Internet became an essential research tool in the lead up to the Millennium and beyond. We also shed light on the elusive Austrian Perchten and Bulgarian Kukeri, and discuss parading Philadelphia Mummers, Bahamian Junkanoo figures, and Cape Town, South Africa's legendary Minstrel Parade. To learn about the most rewarding aspect of Jill's project and find out where she'll be ringing in New Year's Eve 2023, pull up a seat, pop some bubbly and listen in! The Speckled Bees: A Celebration of Childhood

What kind of masks can you think of? Masks have developed a whole different meaning over the last couple of years. Regardless how you feel about them, masks have become a normal part of our lives and children are fascinated by them. Spencer talks about how to bring joy and culture back into the subject. We discuss themes and the problems you run into when you try to force them into your curriculum, but how powerful it is when you find a topic that the children are interested in. This was definitely the case with Ms. Spencer's art project study on masks! We talk about how the topic came about organically and how she ran with it. She introduced a different category of masks each week. They started out talking about masks used for celebrations like Venetian carnival masks, Dinayang masks, African Fatima masks, Junkanoo masks, Day of the Dead masks and facial paint, Dancing Devil masks of Venezuela, and Red Goblin masks of Japan. The children each made a masquerade mask.Next, they talked about ritual and ceremonial masks like the  Egyptian priest masks and African ritual masks (which the children were inspired by for their own masks). For this topic, they talked a lot about symbolism and color theory. Then they moved on to performance masks. They talked about masks of Greek theater, THALIA, Japanese Kabuki masks, and Beijing opera masks (which were the project that the children made). They also talked a little bit of modern theater like The Lion King on Broadway and even Pinkfong Baby Shark with the little hats.To transition into the last category, they talked about sports masks since they combine performance with protection. That got them ready to talk about how masks keep us safe. Spencer finishes up our discussion by taking us through some of the health and safety histories of masks. We talk about the surprising origins of the Plague Doctor masks and discuss how this is a great way to introduce hope to children as this is not the first epidemic in history. She showed the children the first firefighter helmet (The Nealy Smoke Mask) and the cowboy bandana. That led into the development of medical masks and even their role during the Spanish Flu. There are pictures from that time that almost look just like our society today. They ended the project by decorating their own reusable safety masks.Don't forget to show us pictures of your favorite masks!Resources:Mask Presentation - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/18WPcr0W_hk-lIf2-Z-_H90TrCvnyQsjcF_jILhQtmnE/edit?usp=sharingThe Color Game - https://color.method.ac/African Masks - https://www.artyfactory.com/africanmasks/History of Medical Masks - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7255306/"Wholesome" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/speckeledbees)

As we approach our country's 48th Independence, we pause to reflect on what differentiates us from the rest of The West Indies and the rest of the world. What is Bahamian Culture? The Bahamas has a distinct culture which has evolved over generations, from a mixture of mostly African, combined with some British and American influences, which developed into a unique and colourful style of Bahamian self-expression. Bahamians are best described as easy-going, friendly and hospitable. The adult literacy rate, in The Bahamas, is over 90% and the country has experienced a rapid growth in the professional class and university educated workforce. English is the official language of The Bahamas, with a local dialect called ‘Bahamianese or Bahamian Dialect' being spoken colloquially. Source – bahamashclondon.net Bahamian culture is joy personified. It is a Junkanoo celebration, parading down the street. It's bold and colourful art. The name Bahamas derives from the Spanish baja ("shallow") and mar ("sea"). Source: everyculture.com/A-Bo/Bahama-Islands.html#ixzz6zONvUT2j When you hear Bahamian Culture, Junkanoo is usually the first thing that comes to mind. So what is Junkanoo? (Include Other Genres)It is a type of street celebration which occurs on December 26 (Boxing Day) and New Year's Day (January 1), and on similar dates on the family islands. This traditional celebration was started with an African slave by the name of John Canoe. Slaves were given a special holiday at Christmas time, when they could leave the work of the plantation behind and celebrate their freedoms. Source - WikipediaLanguage ( Bahamian Dialect AKA Bahamianese)English is the official language of the Bahamas. A vast majority of the population speaks Bahamian Dialect, which is a dialect of English intermediate between Standard English and Bahamian Creole. There are some minor regional differences from island to island in terms of pronunciation, but generally all are the same. African influence & Gullah/Geechee Connections In Bahamian dialect, some African words and expressions have been retained, such as: yinna - you (plural) nanny - (v.n.)- feces or the act of defecation muddo/muddasick – A exclamation of disbelief Jumbay - ghost, related to the Kongo word nzumbi of similar meaning Yam - to eat, still in use in some southern and eastern islands, related to the African word nyam' Bey - meaning boy or a young boy or young lady Boongie/Boonkey – Your rear end (usually a woman's) Wind from The Carolinas (Book)Food, Cuisine, Native Dishes & BeveragesReligion & Education Statistically speaking, major Protestant denominations include Baptists/Evangelicals (30 percent), Pentecostals (23 percent) Anglicans (10 percent), Seventh-day Adventists (5 percent), and Methodists (4 percent).[2] Although many unaffiliated Protestant congregations are almost exclusively black, most mainstream churches are integrated racially.[2] There are significant Roman Catholic (14 percent) and Greek Orthodox populations.[2] Smaller Jewish, Baháʼí, Jehovah's Witness and Muslim communities also are active.[2] A small number of Bahamians and Haitians, particularly those living in the Family Islands, practice Obeah, a form of African shamanism.[2] A small number of citizens identify themselves as Rastafarians.[2] Some members of the small resident Guyanese and Indian populations practice Hinduism and other South Asian religions.[2] More than 91 percent of the population of the Bahamas professes a religion, and anecdotal evidence suggests that most attend services regularly. (the “Company”) (NYSE: NCLH), a leading global cruise company which operates the Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands, has announced the creation of its long-term climate action strategy and goal to reach carbon neutrality through reducing carbon intensity, identifying and investing in technology including exploring alternative fuels and implementing a voluntary carbon offset program. In addition to ongoing initiatives to reduce its emissions rate, the Company has committed to offset three million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) over a three-year period beginning in 2021 to help bridge the gap in its decarbonisation efforts until new technology becomes available. As part of the Company's global sustainability program, Sail & Sustain, combatting climate change is a material focus and the Company previously signed the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) historic commitment to reduce the carbon emissions rate industry-wide by 40% by 2030, from a 2008 baseline.Long-Term Climate Action Strategy – The three focus areas of the Company's long-term climate action strategy include:Reduce Carbon Intensity. The Company continually seeks opportunities to reduce its overall footprint by minimising fuel consumption and increasing energy efficiency. Ongoing investments in systems and technologies have resulted in a reduction of fuel consumption per capacity day of approximately 17% from 2008 to 2019 for the entire 28-ship fleet. In addition, the Company achieved an estimated approximately 14% reduction in CO2 emissions per capacity day across its fleet, between 2015 and 2019. As nine new and more fuel-efficient vessels are introduced to the fleet through 2027, this rate is expected to further decrease.Invest in Technology & Explore Alternative Fuels. The Company has partnered with CLIA and other maritime organisations to propose the establishment of a collaborative shipping research and development fund dedicated to the ultimate goal of eliminating CO2 emissions from international shipping. If approved, funding would come from a contribution per tonne of marine fuel purchased for consumption and is expected to amount to US$5 billion over a 10-year period. These funds will be used to finance the development of zero and near-zero GHG fuels and propulsion technologies. As new alternative fuel sources become available at sufficient scale in the future, the Company will evaluate how these can accelerate its long-term carbon reduction strategy.Implement Voluntary Carbon Offset Program. The Company has announced its commitment to purchase carbon credits to offset three million MTCO2e over a three-year period to help bridge the gap in decarbonisation efforts until new technology becomes available. Offset purchases are expected to ramp up in future years to reach the goal of carbon neutrality.Carnival Cruise Line To Grow Fleet By Two Additional Ships By 2023Carnival Cruise Line announced plans today to grow its fleet by two additional ships by 2023, taking the delivery position of an Excel-class ship that had previously been assigned to sister line AIDA Cruises that will arrive in late 2023, as well as taking ownership of Costa Magica from another of its European sister lines, with that ship going through a dry dock, renaming and Carnival-branded conversion and joining the fleet by mid-2022.These two ships are in addition to the new capacity growth represented by Mardi Gras, Carnival's first Excel-class, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship which starts sailing from Port Canaveral on July 31 and her sister ship, Carnival Celebration, which will be delivered and sail from Miami starting in late 2022, as part of Carnival's 50th birthday festivities. The addition of these four ships will bring the Carnival fleet to 27 by year-end 2023, and these ships bring many new amenities and features for guests, as well as environmental benefits and enhancements as Carnival continues to exceed and expand targets for emissions efficiencies.Regent Seven Seas Cruises Names Newest Ship Seven Seas GrandeurRegent Seven Seas Cruises has announced the name of its highly anticipated new ship as Seven Seas Grandeur™. The Baha Men formed in 1977[1] as High Voltage, initially playing disco and funk.[2] They performed regularly in nightclubs and hotels in the Bahamas and self-released several albums.[2] In 1991, one of their tapes found its way to Atlantic Records A&R man Steve Greenberg, who signed the band to the Big Beat subsidiary, at the same time getting the band to change their name to the Baha Men.[2] The following year, the Baha Men released their first album, Junkanoo, which included the local hit "Back to the Island".[2] Kalik followed in 1994, including the international hit "Dancing in the Moonlight".[2] The band moved with Greenberg to Polygram for the 1997 album I Like What I Like and Doong Spank, released the following year.[2] The latter sold only 700 copies in the US and the band was dropped by the label. Greenberg then started his own label, S-Curve, and signed the band.[2] Original vocalist Nehemiah Hield left in 1999, and was replaced by his nephew Omerit.[2] The band was most popular in the 1990s in Japan, and their 1999 album 2 Zero 0-0 was initially only released in that country.[2] They achieved great, but short-lived, popularity with 2000's remake of "Who Let the Dogs Out" (originally composed by Anslem Douglas), produced by Greenberg and Michael Mangini.[2] The song was a chart success in many countries and also became a popular song at US sporting events.[2] "Who Let the Dogs Out" also earned the band several awards: a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Dance Recording;[2] Billboard Music Awards for World Music Artist of the Year and World Music Album of the Year; and a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for Favorite Song. In 2002, they won another Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Band.

The historical accounts are a bit fuzzy, but the way the story is commonly told, Caribbean slaves in the 18th century gained a day of freedom two times a year, on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) and New Year’s Day. They made costumes and played music to celebrate, and over the centuries, that tradition evolved into what’s now know as the annual Junkanoo festival, an all-night parade through the streets that’s been compared to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnival in Brazil. On this episode of Far From Home, I visit Nassau in The Bahamas, which is home to the largest and most well-known of the celebrations. I speak with several participants to learn more about the festival and why they look forward to it each year around this time. Visit my website to see some photos and videos my brother took when we attended the Junkanoo Festival a number of years ago. The Bahamas are still recovering from the awful devastation of Hurricane Dorian a few months ago. Junkanoo, an annual communal parade held in the Bahamas, is a labor of love for the Bahamian people that dates back centuries. The parade, which has Akan cultural roots, emerged in the time of slavery, but it has since moved from the margins to the very center of society, becoming the bedrock of national culture. When the government wanted to invest millions into the development of a major cultural festival designed to attract tourists, Junkanoo seemed like the obvious choice. In this podcast, we hear what happened when the government chose to use Trinidad Carnival as the model instead.  Produced by Gabrielle Misiewicz Follow Afropop Worldwide on Facebook at www.facebook.com/afropop, on Instagram @afropopworldwide and on Twitter @afropopww. The Snake and the Frog is a trickster tale from the Island of Andros in the Bahamas. It's similar to many Anansi stories, and for good reason: Anansai the spiderman, according to legend, made his way from Africa to the New World to comfort and inspire slaves. Thus, we have many Anansi stories in the U.S., as well as in these islands just offshore. We chose this story because we recently returned from a 4-day trip to The Bahamas, visiting the cities of Freeport and Nassau. At Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport, we encountered a colorful character dressed in traditional costume, who told us about the Bahamian festival of Junkanoo (he believed the name to be derived from John Canoe), which unfortunately we'd just missed. It's a time of great revelry celebrating, he told us, freedom, peace, love and other good things. (Or good "tings", as the locals would say.) The dancing is accompanied by percussive music they call Kalik, apparently from the word click. We also enjoyed a couple of the wonderful beaches for which these islands are noted, including one called Junkanoo. This was in the city of Nassau, which we found a fun and colorful place to stroll around. We were able to watch artisans make and sell their crafts at the famous Straw Market, and visited the curious Nassau Library, which was formerly a jail, and the Queen's Staircase, built by newly freed slaves as a token of thanks. And we had a wonderful time just being on the cruise ship, enjoying the atmosphere and the entertainment and the great food and the fellow passengers. We're ready to do it again! Happy Listening,Dennis (Frog, Goat, Rooster) and Kimberly (Narrator, Snake, Owl)
