The exuberantly effervescent Jo Anne Worley, queen of the quip and paradigm of the pizzazz, turns our studio into a cabaret club this week, dazzling and delighting with stories of show biz daring do… her fearless stage style, her bold reach for brilliance, behind the scenes lore from the set of Laugh-In and a fabulous flurry of anecdotes and memories from an unrivaled career. The girl from Lowell, Indiana knew she was destined for the business when she distracted the most vicious teacher in her two-room schoolhouse with a hilarious crack that saved the hide of another student. After high school she hit the ground and then the train running out of her tiny town towards the Pickwick Players and a life in theater, where she literally ate the scenery, salting and snacking on a tomato during a key court scene in The Mikado. Jo Anne built an all singing and dancing nightclub act because, at the time, women did not talk on stage. Her comic gifts so impressed Merv Griffin's wife, it lead to her frequent appearances with Merv on his show and a chance to audition for George Schlatter, creator of Laugh-In.Her iconic role on that revolutionary sketch show earned her a permanent spot in pop culture and entertainment history and she shares with us some deep insider info: How John Wayne gallantly lifted her down from the joke wall and that time a mime, Marcel Marceau, perfectly impersonated this vocally resonant performer without a sound. No one makes an entrance, or unleashes a song parody or lights into a Bob Hope story like Jo Anne Worley! So strap in for hilarity. What did Jo Anne say to Jerry Lewis to earn her spot in his comedy workshop? What's it like to share a fence with Jonathon Winters? On this Episode of GraceStory Podcast Amber takes over for a conversation with Dr. Lyon. Dr. Lyon's lived wisdom is a deep well that could never be completely tapped; and, her humble authenticity keeps her approachable. For those unfamiliar with Dr. Jo Anne Lyon, her history is one of deep dedication, pioneer work on many fronts, and a testament to a life transformed by the infilling of the Holy Spirit when we are committed to living out His presence. Dr. Lyon is a mom to four, has served on both national and international human crisis forums and initiatives, was the first female district superintendent of The Wesleyan Church – serving for 8 years. She has a heart of compassion that is demonstrated in the practical ways she serves, leads, and impacts the kingdom globally. Dr Lyon has a heart for today's emerging leaders. In this conversation with GraceStory Founder, Amber Jones, Dr. Lyon says that it is foundational that our starting point as leaders in the faith community is to be based wholly on being filled with the Holy Spirit. From there, we understand that God trusts us with a mission unique to each of us. That it is such a beautiful, humble honor to represent Him. Dr. Lyon said, “He calls us into difficult places because He trusts me, he trusts you…to be able to move into these areas.” Do you have a question you would like for us to help find an answer for? Episode 277: On January 26, 2012, Jo Anne Alexander called 911 from her residence in Richmond, B.C., pleading for help and mentioning that she had ingested sleeping pills. Upon arrival, police found Jo Anne and her husband, John Alexander, in their bed with their deceased family dog. John was dead and had suffered blunt-force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide. Jo Anne was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was arrested after a conversation with police and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. A B.C. Supreme Court jury found Jo Anne Alexander guilty of the second-degree murder of her husband in March. She was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 11 years. The court heard that the couple had been in severe financial distress, living off the proceeds from the sale of their home and borrowing from friends and family. In a letter to her family, Jo Anne, apparently suicidal, said the couple was facing "financial ruin" and that her husband didn't understand. John and Jo Anne's son, David, will share his experiences over the past 11 and a half years since his father died in the next part of this episode. The following episode includes talk of suicide. “If a bill has been passed in another state, then you know who the opposition was, you know who the supporters were. And it really helps grease the skids for another state to get something through. It builds and then eventually you get a critical mass. And then hopefully at that point, Congress takes a look at it and passes something nationwide.” – Roland Halpern Last week, Allie Taylor was on the podcast. She runs New York Voters for Animal Rights. Allie and I spoke about how real change happens for animals in the US and that much of it happens at the local level. The problem is that many people just don't know where to start or how to get involved so that they can actually affect said change. So, Allie and I agreed that it'd be a good idea to bring on some other people running organizations that are similar to hers from other states. So that is what we did. This conversation is again with Allie Taylor from Voters for Animal Rights of New York, Roy Afflerbach of Pennsylvania, Roland Halpern from Colorado, and Jo-Anne Basile of Connecticut. It's a conversation about how and where change happens.
