Brian, Brad, and Jon discuss the Panthers 31-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined by DW and Jeanna of the Falcaholic.
Brian, Brad, and Jon review the Panthers week 1 win over the Cowboys.
Brian, Brad, and Jon preview the Panthers season opener against the Cowboys.
Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined by Brian's friend Spenser to talk about the Panthers preseason tilt against the Patriots. You may know Spenser from last year's Panthers vs. Patriots preview, as he joined us to correctly tell us that we were dumb for thinking the Panthers weren't going to beat the Patriots in Foxboro. There are no game predictions this time, but we did talk about which Patriots players are worth watching and how this Patriots team is different from those of years past. Of course that's interspersed with talk about what's expected of the Panthers with their patchwork offensive line and young defensive backfield. Check out Complete in Box to see Spenser's video game store and podcast he plugged at the end of the episode.
Brian, Brad, and Jon talk about their impressions from the Panthersfirst week of preseason action. They share their most and least impressive players and Jon gets a chance to expand on his wildly unpopular Curtis Samuel take. They discuss if there was any discernible difference between the Panthers first team under Norv Turner compared to the Mike Shula era, how similar the defense will look under Ron Washington compared to Steve Wilkes, and how they expect different young players to be utilized. They also talk about the Josh Allen Experience before talking about DVOA and other fun stats from the past.
Brian, Brad, and Jon discuss the Panthers upcoming preseason game against the Bills. They talk players to watch, what they want to see, and expectations for the coming season. They touch on the injuries suffered by Ross Cockrell, Daryl Williams, and Amini Silatolu and whether or not they think the team has plans in place to replace all of them. And of course, we'd be remiss to not talk about Kelvin Benjamin's comments regarding Cam Newton.
You got takes about the Panthers draft on the last show. This show is for takes about the rest of the NFL and the NFC South in particular. Falcaholic writers Jeanna and DW share their opinions on Matt Ryan's new mega contract and their reactions to the Falcons draft. They share optimism over the Calvin Ridley pick while Brad and Jon voice concerns. The show then pivots to laughing at the Saints for trading up to select a raw defensive end that some thought was a day 2 pick. We talk about the Buccaneers questionable decision to pass up the chance to improve their horrible pass defense in favor of drafting a space eating nose tackle. Bonus discussions include the Patriots playing into the Twitter jokes, Brian falling asleep at the wheel, and the Falcons Brenton Bersin.
Brad, Brian, and Jon go pick by pick, breaking down each of the Carolina Panthers selections in the 2018 NFL Draft. They share their thoughts on each selection and how they think each player will affect the construction of the team. Brad spends the entire show trying to figure out the difference between Louisville and Maryland, and Jon's cat Toby makes a couple of cameo appearances.
Note: This was recorded Wednesday night, so there is no talk about the Dontari Poe signing. Brian, Brad, and Jon discuss all the early goings on in NFL free agency and the surprising amount of Panthers activity taking place. They cover the departures of Andrew Norwell, Star Lotulelei, and Jonathan Stewart, whether or not they think they are worth the contracts they received, and it they would have liked to see the Panthers retain any of them at those prices. They also talk about the Bashaud Breeland and Julius Peppers siginings, the Torrey Smith trade, what available free agents they'd still like to see the Panthers pursue, and why the Carolina Panthers are your Super Bowl LIII champions.
Brian, Brad, and Jon discuss the new(?) Marty Hurney's approach to team building. They discuss their opinions on the cutting of veterans Jonathan Stewart, Kurt Coleman, and Charles Johnson. The guys debate if the Panthers should go out of their way to replace Jonathan Stewart or just roll with what they've got. There's also a conversation about potential free agent wide receiver acquisitions and how they fit with the Panthers. The show ends with some talk about Mel Kiper not being very good at his job. And of course, it wouldn't be an episode without some kicker talk thrown in there. (Outro song credit: One More Time by I Prevail)
Brian, Brad, and Jon touch on the small snippets of news happening in Panthers world, namely the departure of Steve Wilks to take over the Cardinals head coaching job and Eric Washington stepping in to replace him. The guys also discuss recent comments made by new offensive coordinator Norv Turner and whether or not his words are starting to ease their concerns. Jon talks about his article on the irrelevance of the run game and Brad recaps his interview with Panthers wide receiver Curtis Samuel. The guys also tackle a couple of hot in the streets Internet debate and turn to the CSR community for help on topics to discuss. The 4th and Short suggestion box is open. Tell us what we should talk about. (Outro song credit: Pressure by Skindred)
Brian, Brad, and Jon provide their final game review of the season, touching on what went wrong and what went right against the Saints. They also discuss the firing of Mike Shula and their opinions on Norv Turner likely getting the job and bringing his entire family along with him. Jon also throws out some interesting numbers in a preview of a big piece he has coming out later this month or whenever he gets done with it. Brian and Brad share their plans for the site and the podcast in the coming months as we head into the offseason. Thanks for listening! (Outro song credit: In the End by Black Veil Brides)
Jeanna Thomas from the Falcoholic and SB Nation rejoins the usual crew of Brian, Brad, and Jon to talk about the Falcons 22-10 win over the Panthers on New Years Eve, among a great assortment of other things. Topics of discussion also include protein shakes, which coaches you'd least like to fist fight, the Panthers being bad, the Falcons being less bad, Panthers vs. Saints talk, Mike Smith being a nice guy, and probably some other stuff. (Outro song credit: Highway Tune by Greta Van Vleet)
Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined once again by Jeanna Thomas from the Falcoholic and SB Nation to talk Panthers vs. Falcons. The guys spend a few brief minutes sharing their takeaways from the Panthers roller coaster win versus the Bucs before Jeanna recaps the Falcons poop-tastic loss to the Saints. They also discuss the two teams' biggest weaknesses down the stretch, and Jeanna shares her extreme pessimism for the Falcons both this week and moving forward into the playoffs. (Outro song credit: Lies of the Beautiful People by Sixx:A.M.)
Brian, Brad, and Jon sit down for a quick preview of the upcoming match-up between the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They discuss the Bucs' laundry list of injuries, what their expectations are for each side of the ball, score predictions with the usual dose of Brian pessimism, and bold predictions. Happy Holidays! (Outro song: We Wish You a Merry Christmas by Relient K)
Brian, Brad, and Jon do a podcast! Brad didn't get to pay much attention to the game, so Brian and Jon do most of the recapping of the Panthers victory over the Packers and somehow get into a discussion about what a catch is. After that, they discuss Thomas Davis' hit on Davantae Adams, the Twitter reactions to it, and how bad the NFL's two game suspension was. They also discuss the list of Panthers Pro Bowlers and who they think were the biggest snubs. The show wraps up with the biggest news from the weekend, Jerry Richardon's announcement of the future sale of the team. The guys share their takes on the matter and what they hope/expect to see from new ownership. (Outro song credit: Unity by Shinedown)
Regular Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined by another, better Brian from Pack to the Future. They discuss Aaron Rodgers health, the difference between he and Brett Hundley, the Packers play calling, the state of the Packers backfield and wide receiver corps, and their defense. We learn that there are tons of similarities between the Packers defense and the Panthers offense, with Better Brian making a "blind people playing chess" analogy. All of the guys give their score predictions, including Brad's wild 100 point affair and the likelihood that the teams just take turns kicking field goals all game. It's a good one. Check out Pack to the Future's site for how the Packers side is approaching this game. (Outro song credit: Open Eyes by Conditions)
Brian, Brad, and Jon recap the Panthers win over the Minnesota Vikings. They give their optimistic seal of approval to players on both sides of the ball and try to group think of a person to give the pessimistic label to. They also review the Panthers game plan and coaching approach to Sunday's game. The episode wraps up with some playoff picture breakdowns and very relevant discussions about broadcast teams and the like. (Outro song credit: This is the House That Doubt Built by A Day to Remember)
Brian is out for the episode, so Jonathan takes over as host and runs a two person show with Brad. The two share their thoughts on the Panthers loss to the Saints in New Orleans. Topics of discussion include optimistic/pessimistic reviews from both sides of the ball, a Shula/Rivera review, and general takeaways from the game. They also preview Carolina's upcoming match-up with Minnesota Vikings. They talk about what scares them most about this Vikings team, what the Panthers need to do to win, and final score predictions. There's also a discussion about ESPN's old "Jacked Up" segment and how poorly it's aged. (Outro song credit: Trigger by Deaf Havana)
Brian, Brad, and Jon come to you with all the takes you wanted and needed to hear. Most of the podcast is about the Panthers upcoming visit to New Orleans to take on the Saints. The guys talk about their biggest concerns on both sides of the ball, what they think the Panthers need to do to beat the Saints, and final score predictions. Sprinkled in for your listening pleasure are takes on the general media and public's inability to separate quarterback performance from team performance, the Aqib Talib/Michael Crabtree incident, and Hot Pockets and microwaves. (Outro song credit: Afterlife by Avenged Sevnfold)
Brian, Brad, and Jonathan take to the podcast to discuss the Panthers rather unattractive victory over the Jets. They discuss the state of the NFC and the playoff race, the joys of watching Josh McCown play quarterback, the viability of Jonathan Stewart as a runner, and a magnificent rant from Brad directed at Ed Dickson. As is now the theme for these Tuesday shows, the guys also give their Shula review and their MMO style optimistic and pessimistic ranks. (Outro song credit: Do You Really Want It by Nothing More)
Brian and Jon sit down for a super quick preview show in which they mostly talk about the Panthers upcoming game with the Jets. Topics of discussion include the solid play Josh McCown, the Panthers vs. the McCowns historically, who to watch out for on the Jets both offensively and defensively, and the return of Greg Olsen to the squad. But most importantly, we talk about Kony Ealy's revenge game and how much of a disadvatange the Panthers will have as a result of Jeremy Cash's presence on the Jets practice squad. After all, he knows all the plays. (Outro song credit: Antartica by Hands Like Houses)
Brian, Brad, and Jon discuss the Panthers season through ten weeks. Topics of discussion include a state of the team review, draft grades, best and worst offseason acqusitions, biggest surprises, biggest disappointments, offensive and defensive MVPs, and record predictions for the remainder of the season. There's also a brief discussion on the Panthers only newsworthy item of the week, the Greg Olsen "controversy." Stick around until the end and let the outro get you hyped for the rest of the season.
Brian, Brad, and Jon discuss the annihilation of the Dolphins at the hands of the Panthers. They give their big takeaways from both sides of the ball and discuss the state of the team heading into the bye week. If nothing else, listen to hear Brad struggle to stay connected. It's good fun. It's also the first time the show was recorded with a new type of software, and the sound quality is astronomically better. (Outro song credit: These Walls by Trapt)
Brian, Brad, and Jonathan are here on a Monday instead of a Friday due to technical difficulties. The episode was recorded on Thursday night, so if we sound a little old, you know why. The guys look ahead to tonight's game against the Dolphins, touching on the relative strength of the Dolphins defense and complete ineptitude of the Dolphins defense. The guys also discuss their expectations for Christian McCaffrey and the rest of the Panthers running attack after the happenings against the Falcons. Give it a listen to get you informed for Monday night's showdown.
Brian, Brad, and Jonathan are once again joined by Jeanna, writer for the Falcoholic and SB Nation NFL. They give their optimistic/pessimistic takes from Sunday's game and their weekly Mike Shula Review. The great Jonathan Stewart debate rages on, and Jeanna gives her outside perspective on the situation. They also discuss the state of the division and what they expect to see from the NFC South going forward. (Outro song credit: Here's to the Best by Strangers to Wolves)
Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined by Jeanna Thomas from the Falcoholic. The show starts with a very special cameo from a very special person. The quartet of hosts talk about what's wrong with the Falcons this year, if the Super Bowl hangover exists, offensive coordinator problems, and expectations for the upcoming game between the Panthers and the Falcons. Jeanna also provides her input on the Kelvin Benjamin trade, and it's a little different than the general opinion of Panthers fans. And there may or may not be an abundance of 28-3 jokes. (Outro song credit: Farther from Home by Ashes to New)
Brian, Brad, and Jon share their takes on the Panthers 17-3 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. As has been the theme for recent weeks, the main topic of conversation is the offensive woes. Did Sunday's win over the Bucs create some optimism for the offense? Is Shula still bad? Is it the roster's fault? Who's to blame for the roster? Most if not all of these questions are answered in the podcast. Props are also given to the defense for playing well, but that's not as fun to talk about. And we learn how to say Brian's last name. (Outro song credit: Golden Parachutes by Hawthorne Heights)
Brian, Jon, and Brad come together for the angriest podcast in Cat Scratch Reader history. So angry in fact, that many swear words are said. Be warned. Sticking with the theme for the week, this episode focuses in on the offensive ineptitude, the atrocious play calling, the baffling decision making, and all of the other embarrassing aspects of the Panthers fourteen point loss to the Chicago Bears. This episode is hot hot hot. (Appropriate outro song credit: Let Down by Palisades)
Jon, Brian, Brad are joined by Larry D from Chicago Bears Review to talk about an assortment of things pertaining to the upcoming game between the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears. Topics include "how much do you love John Fox as a coach?. That alone is worth the low low price of admission. But there's more! There is also discussion on the best way to handle a rookie quarterback, where the Bears are strong and where they are lacking, and general discussion on the quarterback histories of these two teams. Spoiler alert: they're not pretty. The episode also ends with a fun new game: has there been a quarterback as bad as Jimmy Clausen since his stint with the Panthers? A special prize will be given to anyone that can name one. (Outro song credit: Indonesia Better Be Worth It by Hopes on Hold)
Brian, Jon, and Brad are joined by a somewhat familiar face - Tyler Jackson, writer for Bleeding Green Nation, Baltimore Beatdown, and your very own Cat Scratch Reader. The guys share their takes on the Panthers victory over the Lions and the emergence of Ed Dickson as an offensive threat. They transition to talk about the Eagles and their sophomore QB Carson Wentz. Tyler breaks down where Wentz has improved and where he still needs to get better as a passer. We learn that Wendell Smallwood is in fact not good and that the Eagles have an unusual platoon situation on the offensive line. There's also some good X's and O's stuff where Tyler talks about route combos and other scheme stuff like that. Just listen. (Outro song credit: Black Rose by Volbeat featuring Danko Jones)
Jon, Brad, and Brian reconvene to discuss the Panthers upcoming game against the Lions. They cover the injury report, the Panthers newest addition, takes on the Lions, and expectations for the game this weekend. Discussions also venture topics such as the stupidity of the NFL's injury report update a couple seasons ago, the name greatness of the Lions offensive coordinator, Brad's experience podcasting with Pride of Detroit, and probably some other stuff.
Brian, Brad, and Jon are back to recap the Panthers' upset win over the Patriots on Sunday. They share their takeaways from the game, what they're optimistic about, who they were most impressed by, and other typical recap things. They also share their reactions to the team's bevy of injuries suffered on Sunday and how they think the team will respond. There's also some Tony Romo talk thrown in there.
Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined by Patriots fan Spenser to talk about the upcoming Super Bowl rematch between the Panthers and the Patriots. Believe it or not Spenser is a Patriots fan that is not overly optimistic about the Patriots chances in both this game and over the rest of the season. The guys talk about Patriots andom, offensive adjustments, players to watch on both sides, what's wrong with the Patriots defense, Josh McDaniels as a coordinator and potential head coach, and many more great and fun things! (Song credit: Same Old War by Our Last Night)
Brian makes adjusts to the defense and delivers a solid intro despite an aggressive play by his cohosts for the second consecutive episode. He, Brad, and Jon discuss the Panthers embarrassing home loss to the Saints. They share their thoughts on who's to blame and there's some disagreement among the group, particularly about a Devin Funchess. (Outro song credit: Song #3 by Stone Sour)
Brian, Brad, and Jon are joined by JM DiGiulio, contributor the Saints SB Nation site Canal Street Chronicles. JM gives us a deep dive on the Saints successes and (mostly) failures over the past few seasons. We ask him some questions posed to us by our readers and get some very enlightening answers. Topics include why the Saints defense is bad; why it doesn't get better; how long Drew Brees, Sean Payton, and Mickey Loomis will be around; how well a couple of former Panthers are doing in the black and gold; and final score predictions from all of your hosts and guest.
Brian, Jon, and not Brad sit down for a quick chat on the Panthers week 2 affair against the Bills. Is Cam Newton back? Is Christian McCaffrey bad and not good? Who was the Panthers MVP in week 2? Are the Panthers even good? Do we know anything? All these questions are answered in this 30 minute episode. Special guests include Jon's dog squeaking her toy in the background for a few minutes.
Brian, Brad, and Jonthan discuss the Panthers week 1 win over the 49ers while looking ahead to week 2's tilt against the Bills. As per usual, the conversation ventures off into other territory, including a discussion on the emphasis on the ground game across the NFL in week 1 and the hottest Panthers debate of all time - which offensive tackle was less bad, Mike Remmers or Byron Bell?
The preseason is over, the roster is final, and the Panthers have two kickers. Brian, Brad, and Jonathan discuss these matters and predict the Panthers chances at snapping the 49ers six game opening day winning streak. Interspersed throughout the episode are random tangential takes and observations on the rest of the NFL. Also, does Brian have a vocal doppleganger?
Brian, Brad, and Jonathan share their top performers from the Panthers week 3 tilt against the Jaguars. They share some commentary on the Jaguars comical quarterback situation and how great it is to not be there. On the topic of quarterbacks and things that are bad, the guys talk about how wrong it is to rank Cam as a bottom-of-teir-two quarterback. The guys also make a point to discuss the two hottest battles in camp - kickers and punters.
Brian, Bradley, and Jonathan share their thoughts on the Panthers week two tilt against the Titans of Tennessee and follow that up with their thoughts on the QB situations in both Jacksonville and Carolina. Jonathan shares a hot take on a Panther fan favorite that is not well received by his cohosts, and the guys get into the most heated debate in the history of debates - how does one say gif? Stay tuned through the music for a little bonus.
The guys are Right Back at it Again to finally discuss the Panthers first preseason game. They give their standout performers from Carolina's tilt against the Texans and look ahead to their upcoming match-up with the Titans. Also discussed are the goings on around the NFL, including rookie QBs standing out, the Patriots having the most annoying broadcast ever, the Jets being bad, and there's even some McCaffrey vs. Fournette talk for those of you who haven't had enough. As always, email any questions or discussion topics to catscratchreadr@gmail.com.
We kick off this podcast better than Roberto Aguyao ever kicked off a ball for the Bucs. After some fun at the Bucs' expense, the guys recap training camp, give their camp MVPs, and Jon tells the stories of getting the official CSR gnome signed by all sorts of names, big and small.
Brian, BW, and Jonathan reconvene for a second time. The guys talk about Brad and Jon's experience at training camp, what players have been standing out, Cam Newton's health, and other NFL things.
