In this episode, John Jenrette will take off from his hometown of Loris S.C for his days at Wofford College in Spartanburg, and his summers in Ocean Drive, now North Myrtle Beach S.C. It would be an adventure to say the least, he would meet friends Jerry Richardson ( future owner of the Carolina Panthers) and Don Fowler (future Chairman of the Democratic National Committee) , and learn the famous Carolina Shag on the beach while lifeguarding and chasing pretty girls in the pre Hurricane Hazel Grand Strand. Then when college was done he would take off across the country to see the world and end up at the bar of the Yellowstone National Park Hotel. It would be there he would serve some of the most famous people in America including one odd couple who were also arguably the most famous and beloved couple in the world. "I Love Lucy" was at the time the biggest show on television, and Lucille Ball and Dezi Arnaz are widely credited with creating the format of the comedy sitcom still used today to make America laugh. John Jenrette was their bartender in the bar at Yellowstone before he was our congressman in the 6th District of South Carolina. In this episode we will introduce you to the specialty drink of Dezi Arnaz too: Pousse-café (French, literally "coffee-pusher") may refer to: a digestif, an alcoholic beverage consumed after the coffee course, such as cognac in an espresso cup. a layered drink composed of several layers of differently colored liqueurs. When you make a pousse café, you layer the drink by adding the heaviest liquid first, building to the lightest at the top. Generally speaking, grenadine or crème de anything are likely to be the heaviest ingredients you'd add to a pousse café, so it's good to start there.3 tsp grenadine3 tsp maraschino liqueur3 tsp crème de menthe3 tsp crème de violette3 tsp Yellow Chartreuse3 tsp brandyPour the ingredients carefully into a glass in the order listed to keep the colored layers separate. You'll need a steady hand and a strong stomach. Good luck. This is a fun show, it has it all, the beach, a dance, chasing girls, and life lessons with the rich and famous. Long before Jerry Richardson rose to prominence as owner of the Carolina Panthers football team, he'd distinguished himself as a pioneer of the fast-food restaurant business. He not only developed much of the Hardee's burger chain as a franchisee in the 1960s and '70s, but would go on to oversee such brands as Denny's, El Pollo Loco and Quincy's. By the time he retired in 1995, he was responsible for more than 2, 500 restaurants. Richardson died earlier this month at age 86. His connection to the restaurant industry had been minimal for nearly the prior two decades, but his mark on the business is indelible. Join me on this week's episode of the Restaurant Rewind podcast as we review the career of an early industry star who found fame before and after on the gridiron. Chris breaks down the several last-minute NHL deals that didn't make it into last week's show. He examines how the Ritchie brothers & Jonathan Quick deals show hockey is still a business, and why now is actually the perfect time, if any, for a hockey player to get hurt. In the NFL, this week marks franchise tag deadlines, most notably for the Ravens & Giants. Chris discusses how the Giants didn't quite overpay Daniel Jones as much as you think, and how the reason for the late Jerry Richardson to sell the Panthers will overshadow his tenure. Chris also looks at how parity has grown in women's college basketball as South Carolina enters the NCAA Tournament at 32-0.
Riding high into this first full week of March, I kick off the week with a jam packed, fast paced sports podcast for you to digest. On deck: (2:52) Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant will be away from the team due to brandishing a gun on his Instagram story early Saturday morning. How will this affect the team that's had success in the regular season the last two years, but certainly haven't arrived as a team that's mature or not being able to take their game to the next level come playoff time. What about the coach, Taylor Jenkins? How does he handle this mini-crisis as they navigate through this tough stretch? The Bucks had a 16 game winning streak snapped on Saturday vs. the Sixers, but it was Giannis Antetokounmpo who looked like a fool rebounding his own shot to secure a triple double at Washington last night. I'll throw my two cents on that. The Suns are 3-0 with Kevin Durant in the lineup as they defeated the Mavericks yesterday. It got testy at the end of the game between Luka Doncic and Devin Booker. Is it possible that they face off in the postseason? Steph Curry has returned from injury with the Warriors. Can he push them higher in the Western Conference? Break up the Knicks as they've won nine straight as they put themselves in good position to avoid the play-in tournament. The Association is in the final 18-20 game stretch with about a month away from the season concluding. (20:50) Conference Championship Week has arrived. One team that needs an enormous few days to get to the Tournament is the North Carolina TarHeels. Will they do some damage in the ACC Tournament? Will the committee let them in? Also, the #1 team in the nation avoided a scare as Houston won on a last second buzzer beater at Memphis. As we're a little more than a week away from the Madness beginning, which teams will be #1's in each of their brackets? March Madness is here. So get ready as college basketball will begin their takeover in sports starting tomorrow. (27:23) I'm at a loss for words, people. The Boston Bruins seem to be front and center whenever I discuss the NHL. They're in the middle of a 10 game winning streak. They've gotten reinforcements at the trade deadline. It is Stanley Cup victory or bust for this organization. I'll explain why it would be not minor or major, but COLOSSAL if they fall short of that. Speaking of the trade deadline, you had some good moves, minor acquisitions but nothing earth shattering or what we saw the past few weeks. I'll go through both conferences, the latest wild card scenarios as we approach the final quarter of the regular season. (37:56) There's been some rumblings about the possibility of the Oakland A's moving to Las Vegas. It may not take place for some time, but does yours truly approve of this, if and when it does happen? Anyone interested in the World Baseball Classic? I'll give a psuedo preview, but if it comes down to two teams in particular for the title, I will definitely tune in. You'll have to listen in order to see which matchup I'd love to see. Plus, Bryce Harper is in camp and pitcher Mike Clevinger won't be disciplined for alleged domestic and verbal abuse towards his family. (48:26) Derek Carr has found a new home, down by the Bayou in New Orleans. How much of an improvement will he be in an underwhelming NFC South? Former Panthers owner, Jerry Richardson passed away at the age of 86. There were a few player cuts recently as the NFL will open the new year in about nine days so the free agent frenzy will begin at that time. (52:58) Jon Jones is back in the UFC once again, wreaking havoc as he win the heavyweight crown defeating Cyril Gane in submission just two minutes into the first round. We know how much of a legend he is in the sport. He's back (as we saw), but is he here to stay? Or will he continue to fall into the patterns and behaviors that has derailed him from immortal status as of today? A big story on the St. Louis Rams Relocation Lawsuit. We cover it with A.J. Perez (@ByAJPerez) of Front Office Sports who broke the news. We are starting to see some real movement on settlement as trial looms. The problem is how do you settle a case worth BILLIONS if only one owner is required to contribute pursuant to an Indemnification Agreement. Well Rams owner Stan Kroenke reportedly isn't ready to cave that the Indemnification Agreement requires him to do anything other than pay attorney's fees--- and NOT damages. Obviously, the other 31 owners disagree. Naturally, the interpretation of this agreement has tremendous ramifications on whether St. Louis will get an expansion franchise as the smoke on this lawsuit clears. We break it down its enforceability and - if the trial proceeds - why the NFL has to be very worried about former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.
