After managing only 5 runs in a 3 game series in San Diego, and getting swept for the first time in 2019, fans are pointing out the bats, and how cold the offense has been. We discuss the problems and solutions, and one fix may have just emerged from Reno, Nevada. Minor league superstar Kevin Cron is expected to make his MLB debut this weekend in San Francisco, after leading the minor leagues in home runs and RBIs in 44 games this year. How will his offense impact the lineup? We answer all that on this week of RattleUp.
The New York Mets got more bad news Monday when Yoenis Cespedes suffered several fractures in his right ankle. The injury reportedly occurred when Cespedes suffered a “violent” fall on his ranch in Florida, with General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen declining to offer specifics on how exactly Cespedes fell. This latest setback is another blow for the Mets, who are paying Cespedes $29.5 million this season and the same salary again next season, but depending on how this injury occurred the team could try and get out of the rest of the contract. Pittsburgh Pirates third basemen have been the worst in the National League this season. Due to this, the team should move one of their top hitting prospects back to the hot corner. Third base has been, to put it lightly, underwhelming for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season. Entering play on Friday, Pirate third basemen were among the least productive in the entire National League. The Pittsburgh Pirates let go of a certain utility type player at the beginning of last season. Could they look to bring him back? Last year, the Pittsburgh Pirates let go of utility player Alen Hanson. Hanson was long regarded as one of the top prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates system. He and Gregory Polanco broke out in 2012 and led the West Virginia Power in almost all the offensive categories at the time. While in the Pittsburgh Pirates system, Hanson played shortstop and brought an interesting speed and pop combination that drew comparisons to a young Jose Reyes. The MASH unit that is the Pittsburgh Pirates outfield will soon receive a boost 24 games into their 2019 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves as owners of a 12-12 record. A 12-12 start is never a slow start for any team, however, it’s a bit of a disappointment for the Pirates. The reason it is disappointing is due to the team currently riding a six-game losing streaking after a 12-6 start. A big factor in this losing streak has been a struggling offense. During this losing streak the team has averaged just 1.8 runs per game. The Pirate bats have gone just 6-for-41 with runners in scoring position during this stretch, which has been a major factor in the lack of run production. The Pittsburgh Pirates have now won four games in a row Entering play on Friday, the Pittsburgh Pirates owned the best winning percentage (.625) in the National League. While the start of the game happened later than originally planned, the team’s hot start to the season would continue on Friday night. Following a 1 hour 25 minute rain delay, baseball was played at PNC Park. The game that unfolded saw the Pittsburgh Pirates improve to 11-6 on the season by defeating the San Francisco Giants bu a score of 4-1. While the Pirates were victorious, it may prove to be a costly one. Three of the team’s starting nine exited the game early after injury scares. Also, starting second baseman Adam Frazier was a late scratch due to back spasms. All of this comes for a team that already has five members of their projected Opening Day 25-man roster on the injured list.
