Jorge Soler is a member of the San Francisco Giants. Er, not officially. The SF Giants' deal with Jorge Soler, which was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser, is for three years and $42 million and pending a physical. Those last few words are scary for Giants fans, but all deals are contingent on passed physicals and no one should expect a repeat of the Carlos Correa situation. Soler brings huge power to the Giants. He led MLB in home runs in 2019 with 48. Soler added 36 more last season. The SF Giants haven't had a player hit 30 or more home runs in a season since Barry Bonds in 2004. Jorge Soler, with three seasons to play with, has a good chance of finally breaking that streak. The Giants won't be platooning Soler, for those wondering. And it's not just because Gabe Kapler is out and Bob Melvin is in. Jorge Soler won't be platooned because he's good against both lefties and righties. Since 2019, his isolated power is insanely high against lefties—over .300—and he sports a very high on-base percentage against them as well. He's not as prolific against righties, but has still produced at a level about 10% above the MLB average against them in the last five seasons. On top of all the numbers, Soler adds a ton of personality and flare to what has been a dull SF Giants team in recent years. His arrival doesn't have a huge immediate impact on the Giants' roster, but if the San Francisco Giants continue to add, which they ought to do—at least providing some insurance for Marco Luciano at shortstop—they may need to make a trade or two to clear space. Should the SF Giants trade Keaton Winn for Willy Adames if they have the chance?

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 7, 2024 38:15 Very Popular

If the San Francisco Giants had the chance, should they trade Keaton Winn straight up for Willy Adames? They absolutely should, even though Winn has a bright and exciting future. The Giants could really use a true shortstop, and who better than a talented hitter and elite defender who's only 28? Adames fits the SF Giants extremely well, and the Giants have a surplus of young pitching. It might take more than that to land Adames, but he's a player the Giants should definitely be targeting. Among the other questions asked and answered on today's mailbag edition of the Locked On Giants podcast: Why are so many people asking for Adames instead of FINALLY seeing what we have in Marco Luciano? Thoughts on Joc Pederson liking that post about the city? Now that Joc's gone who has the most swagger on the team? What are a few examples of ways the front office has integrated differing viewpoints into their decision-making processes, compared to last season? Are you proud of the Giants organization? Are you proud to be a Giants fan right now, or were you proud to be a Giants fan back when the organization was run differently (Bochy Era), and just hopeful that it will get back to something to be proud of? Do you think a couple of signings/moves are imminent after they can add Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray to the 60-day IL on 2/14? If you were Farhan Zaidi would you rather pay 6/$180M for Blake Snell or trade for Jesus Luzardo in a prospect package costing at least Carson Whisenhunt or possibly Marco Luciano as the top player back to Miami? Ok real question, do you think the 107-win season was actually the worst thing that happened for the SF Giants' long-term strategy, soft rebuild (reset?), Zaidi & Gabe Kapler game plan? The San Francisco Giants enjoyed a solid run of success on the pitching side of their team ever since Gabe Kapler was hired prior to the 2020 season. Kevin Gausman, Logan Webb, Camilo Doval, Carlos Rodón are a few examples of success, and they're far from the only ones. With that in mind, how big of a loss is the departure of pitching coach Andrew Bailey to the Boston Red Sox? Not to mention the loss of director of pitching Brian Bannister to the White Sox. Locked On Giants and Locked On Red Sox discuss numerous topics, including the change to the MLB schedule that now sees all NL and AL teams play each other at least once a year. For Giants fans, this means that every other year the team will play in every American League stadium. It was a great change in a lot of ways, and means SF Giants fans get way more opportunities watch their favorite team play at historic stadiums like Fenway Park. There were also some drawbacks, but the positives outweighed them. All of this is discussed under the shadow of Shohei Ohtani's free agency, which as of yet has not reached a conclusion. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, three major teams seem to have shifted their attention away from Shohei Ohtani, and indication that they have perhaps been told they're out of the running. Per Passan, the Mets, Red Sox, and Rangers are seemingly out on Ohtani. Those are three teams that were legitimate threats to land the megastar, which only increases the SF Giants' odds of landing Ohtani. Passan adds that the Dodgers, Cubs, Blue Jays, and Angels are known to still be in the running for Ohtani, and that the San Francisco Giants' status is "unknown." Per reports, Ohtani wants things kept as quiet as possible, so that's not necessarily a bad position for the Giants to be in.The Winter Meetings kick off in Nashville on Sunday. What's on the Giants' agenda on the offseason's biggest stage? Landing a superstar should be priority No. 1. Ohtani certainly would suffice. Yoshinobu Yamamoto reportedly won't meet with finalists until the week after the Winter Meetings, so don't expect his signing to go down in Nashville. The SF Giants would be wise, though, to improve their team to prove to Ohtani that they'd be in a position to win with him. It doesn't help that Korean star Jung Hoo Lee has yet to be posted, as he profiles as a strong fit for the Giants. Cody Bellinger is another who seems to fit well. Finally, Gabe Kapler landed on his feet. We learned today that the Giants' fired manager was hired as Assistant General Manager of the Miami Marlins under new President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix, who was hired away from his position as General Manager of the Rays just weeks ago. Kapler joins several of his Giants coaches in landing on his feet after not being retained by the Giants. Kai Correa, Craig Albernaz, Andrew Bailey, Brian Bannister, Ethan Katz, and Donnie Ecker are among Kapler's initial staff with the Giants that now have prominent roles with other organizations.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants finally announced their new coaching staff under new manager Bob Melvin tonight. At least most of it, anyway. The big ticket additions: Ryan Christenson will be Melvin's bench coach, leaving former bench coach and interim manager Kai Correa's status in question. Matt Williams returns to the Giants and will be the third base coach, which pushes Mark Hallberg from third base to first base. This leaves Antoan Richardson's status in question. And finally, Pat "The Bat" Burrell joins the SF Giants' staff as co-hitting coach with Justin Viele.Viele's retention comes as somewhat of a surprise after two straight lackluster offensive seasons from the Giants under his leadership, ever since Donnie Ecker departed for the Texas Rangers. Pedro Guererro also returns as an assistant hitting coach. On the pitching side, things are far less certain. Director of Pitching Brian Bannister has already departed for the White Sox. Pitching coach Andrew Bailey's status is uncertain. All we know is that J.P. Martinez will return as an assistant pitching coach. What about important holdovers from Gabe Kapler's staff like Alyssa Nakken? Fortunately, Nakken will return for her fifth season as an Assistant Coach with the Giants. She been a popular figure in the dugout since her arrival, and she will forever be the first in-uniform female coach in MLB history. Taira Uematsu will also return as an Assistant Coach. Sadly, popular coach Craig Albernaz officially left the organization to join new Guardians manager Stephen Vogt's first-ever staff.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

From 1988-2023, Angelo Cataldi was the host of the WIP Morning Show. He retired in Spring 2023. His show was an instant hit and maintained popularity throughout his tenure. Cataldi never shied away from controversy, and would criticize anyone in the Philadelphia sports market that he felt warranted it. Cataldi was joined on the radio show by Al Morganti, and later by Rhea Hughes and former NHL player turned broadcaster Keith Jones, who was recently hired as President of the Philadelphia Flyers. In this episode, Cataldi talked about his major criticism over the years. He explained his issues with former Eagles head coach Andy Reid and former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler. Cataldi is writing a new memoir, entitled “Loud,” due out in November 2023. He talked about the creation of the Wing Bowl, his trip to the NFL Draft with Eagles' fans who were shocked that the team selected Donovan McNabb over Ricky Williams. He also addressed the proposed new arena for the Philadelphia 76ers. From 2008-2011, Angelo had Seth Everett on his show weekly to talk about the Phillies and Major League Baseball. This podcast opens with a clip from July 2010 on WIP, when Seth's then 2-year-old daughter made her debut appearance on Philadelphia radio.
