Sonny Gray described the impact of the St. Louis heat after Tuesday's loss to the Marlins as the Cardinals fell 5-0 to the Fish at Busch Stadium. Gray pitches decently, but described the issues he's been having gripping the baseball in the sweltering STL heat. Is this a matter of a player making excuses, or is he actually giving us exactly what we always claim to want from athletes -- CANDOR! Hey, I loved hearing it and I'll explain why I enjoyed Sonny's perspective so much.Plus, an odd scenario unfolding that made it seem like the Hug Watch could be on for Cardinal lefty Steven Matz. #628: You follow all the right personal finance advice. You know you should save more, invest regularly, and build an emergency fund. So why does it feel so much harder for some people than others? The answer lies in your personality. Dr. Sandra Matz, a professor at Columbia Business School, studies the intersection of psychology and money management. She joins us to explain why one-size-fits-all financial advice often fails. Her research found that agreeable people — those who are caring, empathetic, and put others first — have a harder time saving money. The solution isn't better budgeting apps or stricter rules. It's reframing financial goals to match your personality type. For example, agreeable people save more effectively when they view their emergency fund as protection for loved ones or a way to help others during tough times. By contrast, competitive personalities respond better to framing savings as getting ahead in life. This personalized approach extends beyond personality assessments. Algorithms can now predict your financial behavior using digital footprints — social media activity, spending patterns, even smartphone usage. With just 300 Facebook likes, artificial intelligence understands your money habits better than your spouse does. The conversation also covers the darker implications. Companies exploit these same psychological insights to manipulate spending decisions. Dr. Matz discusses data cooperatives as a solution — member-owned entities where people collectively benefit from their shared information. We dive into negotiation strategies for salary increases, breaking out of financial echo chambers, and using AI to optimize your money management without losing your decision-making autonomy. The Ruby community's most recognizable podcast voices gather for a heartfelt discussion at the final RailsConf in Philadelphia, sharing wisdom that extends far beyond technical topics into the realm of human connection. From conquering social anxiety at conferences to building meaningful relationships in tech, this panel digs into what makes the Ruby community special. Drew Bragg of Code and the Coding Coders who Code it confesses that despite his outgoing appearance, he still struggles with social interactions, while Stephanie Min from The Bike Shed offers practical conversation starters that anyone can use. Chris Oliver of Remote Ruby reminds us of our built-in connection: "We're all here for the same reason—to talk about Ruby and Rails."The hosts reveal the secret sauce behind their podcasting journeys—how they started, how they find guests, and what keeps their content fresh after dozens or even hundreds of episodes. David Hill shares how his Ode to RailsConf podcast transformed from an idea floated at last year's conference into over 50 episodes, demonstrating how quickly passion projects can flourish in this supportive community.Perhaps most touching are the shared memories that have shaped their Ruby journeys: Drew keynoting with Matz in the audience, Stephanie's late-night cookie mission, Chris's first encounter with a listener who recognized his voice, and David's experience contributing to open source during Hack Day. These stories underline how technical communities become chosen families through shared experiences.Whether you're a seasoned Rubyist or considering joining this welcoming ecosystem, this conversation offers a window into why people stay in Ruby despite the rise of newer technologies—it's the people and connections that transcend the code. Do you know what your digital footprint is?We all know that overusing digital devices isn't good for us. But do we know the full extent of what we leave behind when we use our phones or laptops? In this episode I am joined by Professor Sandra Matz to discuss the digital footprints we leave for companies and other individuals to use. Sandra talks about the misuse of digital footprints and the actions we can take to take back control of it.We also explore what can be done to create regulation change in regard to the use of our data. A quite shocking but essential episode for all of us as we leave our digital trail in the world.“Don't stop at what's legal. Think about what's ethical.”– Sandra MatzYou'll hear about:· Digital footprints encompassing both explicit identity claims and behavioural residue.· How people are often unaware of the extent of their digital footprints.· Ways machine learning can provide insights into mental health and behaviour.· How data can be used ethically to improve individual well-being.· Why data considerations must be ethical as well as legal.· Federated learning can protect user data while still providing insights.· Regulation being necessary to protect personal data.· Why collective action is essential for meaningful change in data regulations. About Sandra Matz:As a computational social scientist with a background in psychology and computer science, Professor Sandra Matz studies human behaviour by uncovering the hidden relationships between our digital lives and our psychology.

A fascinating exploration of how algorithms penetrate the most intimate aspects of our psychology—from the pioneering expert on psychological targeting. There are more pieces of digital data than there are stars in the universe. This data helps us monitor our planet, decipher our genetic code, and take a deep dive into our psychology. As algorithms become increasingly adept at accessing the human mind, they also become more and more powerful at controlling it, enticing us to buy a certain product or vote for a certain political candidate. Some of us say this technological trend is no big deal. Others consider it one of the greatest threats to humanity. But what if the truth is more nuanced and mind-bending than that? In Mindmasters: The Data-Driven Science of Predicting and Changing Human Behavior (Harvard Business Press, 2025), Columbia Business School professor Sandra Matz reveals in fascinating detail how big data offers insights into the most intimate aspects of our psyches and how these insights empower an external influence over the choices we make. This can be creepy, manipulative, and downright harmful, with scandals like that of British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica being merely the tip of the iceberg. Yet big data also holds enormous potential to help us live healthier, happier lives—for example, by improving our mental health, encouraging better financial decisions, or enabling us to break out of our echo chambers. With passion and clear-eyed precision, Matz shows us how to manage psychological targeting and redesign the data game. Mindmasters is a riveting look at what our digital footprints reveal about us, how they're being used—for good and for ill—and how we can gain power over the data that defines us. The Cincinnati Reds face the St. Louis Cardinals in a split doubleheader today, April 30, 2025, at Great American Ball Park, rescheduled due to yesterday's rainout. Game 1 starts at 12:40 p.m. ET, with Game 2 at 6:40 p.m. ET. The Reds, riding a five-game winning streak, aim to capitalize on their momentum against a struggling Cardinals squad (12-17), who are desperate to avoid one of their worst 30-game starts in the Wild Card era. Game 1 Preview: Brady Singer (4-0, 3.62 ERA) takes the mound for the Reds against Miles Mikolas (0-2, 5.70 ERA). Singer, acquired in the offseason, has been a reliable arm, though Great American's hitter-friendly confines could test him. Mikolas, coming off a strong shutout against Atlanta, will look to keep the ball out of the middle of the plate. The Reds' lineup, led by Elly De La Cruz's superstar spark, should see Matt McLain's return after hamstring soreness. However, injuries to Austin Hays, Jeimer Candelario, and Tyler Stephenson may force reliance on call-ups like Chase Petty and Tyler Callihan. The Cardinals' offense, inconsistent this season, needs production from Paul Goldschmidt to counter Cincinnati's speed and power. Game 2 Preview: The Reds have not announced their starter, with Nick Martinez (0-2, 5.91 ERA) or a bullpen game as possibilities. St. Louis counters with Steven Matz (2-0, 1.80 ERA), whose early-season form makes him a tough matchup. The Reds' offense, bolstered by Noel Marte's recent two-run homer, must stay disciplined against Matz's command. De La Cruz, a dynamic force, and a hopefully healthy McLain will be key. The Cardinals, meanwhile, lean on their pitching to cool Cincinnati's hot streak, but their shaky bullpen could be a liability late. Key Factors: The Reds' aggressive baserunning, led by De La Cruz, could exploit St. Louis' defensive lapses. Cincinnati's bullpen, with Emilio Pagán's experience, needs to hold leads. For the Cardinals, generating early offense and avoiding high-leverage relief situations are critical. Weather should cooperate, with clear skies forecast. With Terry Francona's strategic edge and Cincinnati's young talent clicking, the Reds are favored to split or sweep, but St. Louis's desperation could make this a tight battle.

Are the algorithms that exist in our daily lives getting so smart that they know us better than our parents or our spouses? How do we balance the convenience and efficiency of this technology with privacy and consumer protections? Sandra Matz is a professor at Columbia Business School and the director of the Center for Advanced Technology and Human Performance. Her book, Mindmasters: The Data-Driven Science of Predicting and Changing Human Behavior examines the link between algorithms and psychology. Sandra and Greg chat about the bright and dark sides of psychological targeting, its applications in marketing, politics, and mental health, as well as the ethical considerations and future implications of using algorithms for personalized interactions.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Even the smartest algorithms slip up24:01: When we talk about these algorithms, and I'm guilty of that myself, it always seems like, well, yeah, if they can predict your personality with high accuracy, that makes sense, but it still makes mistakes, right? So, accuracy is always captured at the average level. So, on average, we kind of get it right most of the time. But that still means that, at the individual level, we make a lot of mistakes. And those mistakes can be costly for the individual, right? 'Cause now you are seeing stuff that is completely irrelevant. Also costly for companies, 'cause now you are optimizing for something that's not actually true. So, I think if you can really think about application—I think the more you can turn this into a two-way street and conversation, the same way that this works in an offline world, right? If you kind of suddenly start talking to me about topics that I care nothing about, you're going to get that feedback, 'cause either I'm not going to see you again, or I just tell you we just talk about something else. And companies oftentimes don't get that because they don't allow users to interact with some of the predictions that they make. And I think it's a mistake, not just from an ethical point of view, but even from a kind of service, convenience, product point of view. Are algorithms making us boring?11:09: There's something nice about having these algorithms understand what we want, but I also do think that there's the risk of us just becoming really boring. The trouble with signing away our data49:29: The way that we typically sign away data is, we consent, but not because we understand it. And I think some of it is just that technology moves so fast that just keeping up with technology is almost impossible. So I think about this 24/7, and I have a hard time, and you also have to have this understanding of — not just in the here and now — like, a fully rational person would say, "Here's all the benefits, and here's all the downsides." And now I kind of make this rational decision that kind of maximizes utility. But we don't understand the downsides.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Big Five personality traitsCambridge AnalyticaGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Columbia Business SchoolProfessional WebsiteProfessional Profile on LinkedInCenter for Advanced Technology and Human PerformanceHer Work:Mindmasters: The Data-Driven Science of Predicting and Changing Human Behavior
We welcome back Major General William M. Matz Jr., a distinguished retired U.S. Army officer, whose new book, My Toughest Battle: A Soldier's Lifelong Struggle with Polio, chronicles his journey of overcoming polio and his distinguished military career. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1962, Matz embarked on a military career that spanned over three decades. As an infantryman, he served in Korea and Panama, and as a company commander with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam, where he was wounded during the 1968 Tet Offensive. His service extended to multiple tours with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, and he held the position of executive secretary to Secretaries of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Frank Carlucci. Matz also served two years with Navy/Marine Corps amphibious forces in the Pacific during a second tour in Vietnam and deployed with the 7th Infantry Division to Panama during Operation JUST CAUSE in 1989. Upon retiring from the Army in 1995, Matz transitioned to the defense industry, holding positions such as Vice President of Army Programs at Raytheon Company and General Manager for Vinnell/Northrop Grumman's Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization Program in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2005, President George W. Bush appointed him to the Veterans' Disability Benefits Commission, where he served until 2008. He also served as President of the National Association for Uniformed Services, advocating for service members, veterans, and their families. In January 2018, President Donald Trump appointed Matz as the Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), a position he held until March 2021. Companies harvest 6GB of your data hourly. Psychologist Sandra Matz explains how they predict everything from depression to politics—and how to fight back.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1135What We Discuss with Sandra Matz:Companies collect ~6GB of data per hour on individuals through social media, credit cards, smartphones, and location tracking, enabling predictions about personality, politics, and mental health.Facebook identified depressed teenagers in 2015 and sold this information to advertisers rather than providing support, prioritizing profit over well-being.Algorithms need just 300 likes to know someone better than their spouse, while facial recognition can determine sexual orientation with 81% accuracy from facial features alone."Anonymized" data isn't truly anonymous — three credit card transactions can uniquely identify a person, revealing unintentional information beyond our curated online personas.Data co-ops offer a practical solution for regaining control. MS patients in Europe and Uber drivers in the US have formed co-ops to collectively manage their data, allowing them to benefit from data aggregation while maintaining ownership and directing outcomes toward their shared interests rather than corporate profit. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Sandra Matz: Mindmasters Sandra Matz is a Columbia Business School professor, computational social scientist, and pioneering expert in psychological targeting. Her research uncovers the hidden relationships between our digital lives and our psychology with the goal of helping businesses and individuals make better decisions. She is the author of Mindmasters: The Data-Driven Science of Predicting and Changing Human Behavior*. Algorithms are becoming more influential with each passing day. That's why leaders must understand their power and then decide how their organizations engage. In this conversation, Sandra and I discuss where psychological targeting is at, where it's going, and the opportunity you have to make the world a bit better. Key Points Everyone knows everything in a small town (for better or worse). In the same way, psychological targeting can used for both evil and good. Psychological targeting already is successful at identifying wealth, personality, income level, and sexual orientation – and keeps improving. None of this is going away. Understanding how the game of targeting is played can help you make it work to your advantage. Leaders and organization who use targeting responsibly can do tremendous good, including helping people save money and flag early interventions for health crises. Be transparent with what data you're collecting how you're using it. Consider newer practices like federated learning that protect privacy and provide permission-based access. Design systems and practices that anticipate the reality of future leaders with different values.
