Even after Dubón trade, SF Giants face tough decision with La Stella return imminent

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

Mauricio Dubón was traded to the Houston Astros. The San Francisco Giants made the perhaps unpopular move because Dubón was out of minor league options, rosters shrunk from 28 to 26, and guys were getting healthy. Even after trading Dubón, the SF Giants will have another tough decision to make regarding the impending activation of Tommy La Stella. Last year wasn't the best of La Stella. When he's right, he brings a rare combination of contact and power. La Stella owns a 125 wRC+ against righties since the 2019 season, with a K% under 10 and ISO near .200. He should be a valuable part of the Giants' offense, but it won't necessarily be easy to add him to the major league roster. The Giants will either have to option popular outfielder Luis González, who's done nothing but hit since being called up to replace the injured Steven Duggar, or else they'll have to option a pitcher and have 14 positions players and 12 pitchers. Based on past arrangements, they seem to prefer to carry as many pitchers as possible. Things were mostly ugly for the Giants on Sunday Night Baseball in a blowout loss, but they took a turn for the better late in the game. González took the mound and threw some entertaining eephus pitches. In the top of the 9th, legendary first baseman Albert Pujols took the mound for St. Louis. González launched a three-run homer against Pujols, and Joey Bart hit a solo shot as well. Evan Longoria singled, and asked for the baseball. It was a lighthearted finish to a frustrating game and series. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

In Episode 6 Jonny, Jared, Dallas, and Joey break down the biggest MLB storylines from over the weekend. We talk about Yankees fans throwing trash at the Guardians outfielders after their walk-off win, Miguel Cabrera getting his 3,000th hit, Reds fans being asked to remove bags from their heads in the stands, offense and batting averages being at an all-time low, and a whole lot more. We also talk about what it would be like if hitters had access to statistics while in the batters' box in the same capacity that pitchers and fielders on defense do. Angel Hernandez had an awful Sunday Night Baseball game in which he was booed and yelled at by Kyle Schwarber which leads to discussion by Jonny on when you should/shouldn't argue balls and strikes. Jared also sees a video of Gerrit Cole touching the back of his pants between pitches which leads to discussion on whether pitchers are still getting away with using sticky substances. Enjoy! The Brewers survived a three-game set in Philly by the skin of their teeth with a 1-0 victory on Sunday Night Baseball thanks to the best start of the year by Eric Lauer. It may have been the start of the year in the National League to this point. Lauer tossed six shutout innings with a new career-high 13 strikeouts - tying Teddy Higuera's team record for strikeouts by a lefty in a game. Despite his dominant outing, he left with a no decision. When he exited the contest, the game was still scoreless as the Brewers could not figure out Aaron Nola for the Phillies. They did figure out old friend Corey Knebel in the 9th to push across the game's only run thanks to some aggressive baserunning from Jace Peterson and a situational sac fly from Christian Yelich. There are some mind-blowing numbers from the offense's cold start, so Dom (@Dom_Cotroneo) breaks it all down and ponders if there is a strategy to help the Brewers moving forward with the bats...
