It ended up being a busy Wednesday afternoon in Navy Yard as initially the Nats had an unorthodox walk-off winner over Milwaukee by the score of 3-2. Then roughly an hour after the game; it was announced that Luis Garcia is being sent down to AAA and Corey Dickerson was unconditionally released. Mark & Al examine why Garcia will be headed to Rochester and what that means long term at 2B in Washington. (16:50) The offense had some rather creative ways to defeat Brewers All Star Closer Devin Williams in the bottom of the 9th. Alex Call is credited with an unusual scoring, a walk-off fielder's choice grounder. Ildemaro Vargas not only scored the winning run, but had very heads-up base running along the way. (24:30) MacKenzie Gore threw a solid outing as he allowed just a pair of runs in 6 IP. An encouraging element to his start is that he only needed 89 pitches to get through the top of the 6th; a frame where he struck out the side. Learn more about your ad choices. Nationals outfielder Corey Dickerson is celebrated on #FTLive for racking up 10 years in the Bigs (0:00) and the All-Star is asked if he should've made it to the midsummer classic more often (5:38)! Dickerson documents the uphill climb it's been for him in MLB from overcoming painful injuries to being cut by the Rays to frequent swing changes (2:45). The Nationals held an early lead but behind poor pitching they ended up losing 10-5 to visiting Arizona. Mark & Al start with a familiar refrain the struggling bullpen. Erasmo Ramirez inherited a 4-3 lead when he took the mound in the 5th inning, but it quickly became a 6-4 Diamondbacks edge. Ramirez last year was the Nationals Pitcher of the Year, but so far this season his ERA is at 6.33. (12:00) It was another Jake Irvin outing that did not inspire confidence and it included him committing an error. Irvin's stellar start in San Francisco is increasingly becoming a distant memory as his WHIP is now at 1.68. Will he keep his rotation spot? (19:40) The offense scored all five of its runs via home runs as Stone Garrett crushed an early Grand Slam and Lane Thomas slugged his 9th HR of the season. Victor Robles remains on the IL, but how does the game of musical chairs look in the outfield between Garrett, Alex Call, and Corey Dickerson for Robles returns? Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats lost 6-1 at the Dodgers on Memorial Day evening. Mark (Live from Dodger Stadium) & Al put in perspective where the franchise stands after 54 games, the one-third point of the season. They are currently on pace for 69 victories; which would eclipse preseason expectations. (06:00) Trevor Williams had an unusual pitching line as all six LA runs scored against him were considered unearned due to CJ Abrams botching a double play in the 5th inning. Williams unraveled after the error and it occurred while he was facing the Dodgers order for the 3rd time. (13:40) Corey Dickerson was thrown out at home after Abrams' RBI single and it was not particularly close. Should Gary DiSarcina have sent him? Lane Thomas singled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and he has reached base in 25 straight games. (17:50) An update on Victor Robles who has been on the IL for three weeks due to what was originally labeled "back spasms". Mark relays what he observed from Robles in the clubhouse on Monday. (23:40) Jake Irvin takes the mound on Tuesday night and he has had a stretch of unimpressive performances. Is his starting rotation job on the line based upon this outing? The Nats scored all their runs in the 6th inning in a 4-2 Saturday afternoon victory in Kansas City. Al & Mark (Live from KC) run through the big inning that saw RBI hits from Corey Dickerson, Keibert Ruiz, and CJ Abrams. Dickerson's double gave him 1,000 career hits for his career. It was another game without a homer for the offense that has been racking up the hits lately. (14:00) Josiah Gray only lasted four innings on the mound while throwing 91 pitches. It is the 3rd outing this month that Gray did not make it into the 6th inning. His current ERA is 2.77, but Al raises red flags in light of that. (19:50) The bullpen, which has been fatigued due to the busy stretch, stepped up for the final five frames after Gray's exit. Hats off to Mason Thompson for throwing two scoreless frames despite recent struggles. Kyle Finnegan was given the save opportunity and delivered. (27:50) MacKenzie Gore faces the Royals on Sunday as Washington seeks its first three game sweep since June of 2021. Gore has not pitched well recently as he has given up a combined seven runs in his past starts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats came up just short again in Miami as they lost 4-3 on Wednesday evening. Mark & Al dissect MacKenzie Gore's outing that lasted just a shade over 5 innings. His ERA currently sits at 3.69. (11:00) Corey Dickerson hit a 2 run HR in his first swing after missing the past month due to injury. Dickerson got the nod at DH as Joey Meneses is on Paternity Leave. Dickerson is a well traveled veteran with a career OPS at .806. (20:45) Alex Call was involved in a bizarre play in the bottom of the 8th while diving for a shallow fly ball. Hear the hosts discuss Call's actions during and after the play in an inning that ultimately the Marlins did not score. (24:00) Anibal Sanchez threw out the ceremonial first pitch in Miami one day after announcing his retirement. Mark reflects on what he enjoyed about covering Anibal. Learn more about your ad choices. With most of the attention on the outfield, Bernie takes a look at who the Cardinals could deploy as designated hitters in 2023 with Albert Pujols and Corey Dickerson gone. Bernie predicts that the Cardinals will mostly use the DH spot as a way to help lessen the outfield surplus versus having a set DH like Albert Pujols in 2022.
The long time radio duo of "Charlie & Dave" join us for the January edition of Nats Chat, but before the interview Mark & Al update the latest with the organization. We begin with the continuing ownership saga that has now extended into 2023. (14:20) Washington signed a pair of Free Agents recently in Dominic Smith and Corey Dickerson. Where will each fit in defensively? How does all this affect where "Joey Four Bags" gets slotted on the lineup card? (22:10) The Nats also inked RHP Trevor Williams, a versatile arm who last year pitched for the Mets. Will he be in the starting rotation this season? (28:25) Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler, who have been the Nationals Radio tandem since 2006, make their Nats Chat debuts. They provide insights on what helps them prepare for broadcasts, how they developed their chemistry in the booth, and of course there will be a Nook Logan reference. Learn more about your ad choices. The Washington Nationals made another move for a left handed bat, and signed LF Corey Dickerson to a one year deal in hopes to turn his career around with the Nationals. Dickerson has been a All-Star & a Gold Glove winner at LF and has had years where the power has been there for his bat. After a few tough seasons, he signs with the Nats to hopefully bounce back. What are some reasonable expectations for the former All-Star left fielder? There's also another current Washington National with big upside in Ryan's mind that we don't get to talk about enough, and that's 2B Luis Garcia. What is his ceiling with the Nationals? He plays a semi-solid 2B, and is ultimately known for what he can da at the plate. What's his ceiling heading into 2023? Lastly, our prized possession Joey Meneses will have a big role with this team, where does he fit in that aspect? Bernie reacts to the news of the day, including Corey Dickerson signing with the Washington Nationals. He offers up his initial thoughts on Georgia's rout of TCU Monday night, and previews the Blues' upcoming homestand.
Bernie is broadcasting live from Friendly's Sports Bar and Grill at 3971 Bayless Ave. in south St. Louis County. Bernie talks about how he was wrong about Tyler O'Neill in 2022, but he's still confident in him if he can find a way to stay healthy. Bernie also looks at potential outfield targets including the chances of bringing in Michael Conforto to replace Corey Dickerson.
Bernie talks about how the Cardinals paid the price in the postseason for being over-reliant on Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, and to a lesser extent Albert Pujols. Bernie thinks John Mozeliak still doesn't quite comprehend the impact spending the extra money on a bat like Kyle Schwarber would make versus cheaper acquisitions like Corey Dickerson.
Bernie talks about how the Cardinals should take notes from the Phillies on how to build a World Series contending team. He points out how the Cardinals need to spend legitimate money on position players after electing to add Corey Dickerson when they could have signed Kyle Schwarber. He also emphasizes how it's critical to have pitchers who can get strikeouts in October.
