Also, have we seen the last of Aaron Hicks? Between his inefficient offense to his brutal defense, it may be time for the Yankees to eat that $30M sandwich and enjoy! What is up with all the dysfunction in this organization?! Does Randy Levine throw Brian Cashman under the bus?! OUCH! It was a good week for the Yankees and we're feeling slightly more relaxed. The Twins are the Twins and we thank the lord for their creation. Friday was about as bad as a loss as you can have, especially on Jeter Day. Aaron Hicks got pulled mid-game after two awful plays. Fortunately the offense awoke in a huge way on Saturday and Sunday to destroy the Rays pitching. Big week ahead but that weekend was needed.

Hey, sports fans, your two favorite fanatics are back with another Sports Short. Well, not that short. Hey, Chris and Joe have a lot to say about MLB & the NFL as one season draws to a close and the other commences. Of course, our protracted absence can be blamed on Joe as he has been crying in his beer watching the Yanks and the Mets go down like The Titanic and The Hindenburg. But the guys suck it up, put on their cleats and pads, and report on MLB's new 2023 schedule and its historic rules changes. Chris is in motion in the backfield with analysis and predictions for the NFL in general, and The Jets and Giant's in particular. Joe steps up to plate, even though he belongs in AAA with Aaron Hicks, and chronicles the epic slide of The Bronx Bombers and the meteoric rise of The Atlanta Braves. Lookout New York Metropolitans! Also, Chris reviews an important hardball book, "3 Nights in August" by Buzz Bissinger. And you best believe we give some love to the NHL. And finally stick around for the bottom if the ninth, when we give our rambunctious recommendations.

After a disastrous performance in the outfield by Aaron Hicks, the Yankees dropped the first game of their pivotal final series of the season against the Rays, but instead of letting that bad game dictate the rest of the weekend, the Yankees came out hitting single after single and knocking Cory Kluber out of Saturday's game before he could even get out of the first. Then on Sunday, the home runs came in bunches (none by Aaron Judge), and the Yankees sent a message to the Rays. They clinched the season series and own the tiebreaker in case they finish the season tied for the AL East lead. Abbey and Stacey discuss all this, plus look ahead to the Yankees' remaining schedule. The Yankees' miserable stretch continued after they lost series to the Red Sox and Rays after ending their awful road trip. However, last night's sweep-avoiding extra-innings walk-off win against the Rays did bring some optimism and hopefully did enough to inject some life into this team that's looked lifeless for the better part of two months now. This team was in dire need of a spark and Josh Donaldson might have just provided it for them.  Kunj returned to the podcast after a one-week hiatus (read: a break from talking about this team) to join Andrew in talking about how the Yankees have continued their extremely annoying ways. The discussion revolved mainly around how the offense has looked lifeless now that the pitching has settled down and come back to form. Aaron Hicks' downfall, Isiah Kiner-Falefa actually hitting a home run and single-handedly winning a game against the Red Sox were also notable topics.  And in some good news, the podcast duo discussed the Yankees finally calling up some help in the form of Oswaldo Cabrera and Estevan Florial, the recall of Ron Marinaccio — who should've never been sent down in the first place — and the impending return of Giancarlo Stanton. As always, this was followed by a check-in of Baseball Reference's WAR leaderboard, and the Yankee and Manfred of the Week.  The Yankees' AL East lead is back to double digits and hopefully last night brought this team back to life. If they go back to playing like they did yesterday and get contributions across the board this team will be in good position come October. Let's hope the Bringer of Rain also brought some balance to the Force.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Yankees went through some ups and downs this past week, with the highs of winning back-to-back games at Fenway with good showings by the offense and the lows of three blown nights in a row. They had leads in each game on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday, but they all evaporated and two of them came on blown saves from Clay Holmes. The now-All-Star closer is experiencing his first bumps of the season, but Andrew and Kunj still have confidence in him. The Yankees did rebound to snap the three-game skid with a walk-off win on Wednesday night against the Reds, but they may have lost Luis Severino for awhile in the process. The right-hander departed with shoulder tightness and even if his MRI comes back clean, the Yankees seem likely to use the All-Star break to their advantage and rest him for a bit with the now-healthy Domingo Germán, JP Sears, and others prepared to fill in. Other topics include the newest Yankees All-Stars, musings on home-field advantage, Jameson Taillon's struggles, Gerrit Cole's Rafael Devers problem, Aaron Hicks' ugly foul, Aaron Judge battling through a slump, the rival Blue Jays canning manager Charlie Montoyo, the Royals affecting trade talks in an unfortunate way, and Matt Carpenter surging into the Yankees' B-Ref Top 12 (because why not?). Then, they wrap up with the Yankee and Manfred of the Week. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
