Welcome to Episode 81 of Tablesetters! Devin and Steve are back with a fast-moving, stat-packed dive into a wild week across Major League Baseball. We start in the Bronx, where the Yankees handed the game over to Devin Williams with a 3-0 lead in the 8th… and he handed it right back. Two outs, then chaos—after a hit and two walks, Luke Weaver gave up back-to-back two-run hits to cough up the lead entirely. Williams blamed the rain, but his ERA now sits above 10, and Yankee fans are losing patience. The Padres continue their surge despite losing both Fernando Tatis Jr. and manager Mike Shildt to ejections—they've now rattled off six straight wins. Over in Queens, the Mets are falling apart: AJ Minter (1.64 ERA) is out for the season with a lat tear, Danny Young needs Tommy John, and Jesse Winker's oblique strain will sideline him 6–8 weeks. Brett Baty's back, and Genesis Cabrera joins the pen—but the depth is running thin. And how about the Athletics? With a walk-off win over Seattle, they've gone 7-3 in their last 10 and sit just one game out of first place at 20-16. The Royals are also heating up, led by Cole Ragans, who returned from a minor groin issue and struck out 11 in his comeback start. KC has won three straight and is right in the AL Central mix. We also dive into a brutal round of IL stints across the league—Trout, Yordan, Imanaga, Jazz, Glasnow, Buehler, Casas, and Teoscar all out. We debate which loss is the toughest to absorb. Elsewhere: Bret Boone is now the hitting coach in Texas Jake Burger sent to Triple-A Leody Taveras claimed by the Mariners Evan Carter gets the call back Lance McCullers makes his first start since the 2022 World Series Plus, the Sub-2 ERA Crew continues to deal: Yamamoto (0.90), Max Fried (1.01), Mahle (1.19), Senga (1.38), Brown (1.67), Luzardo (1.94), and Kris Bubic (1.98) are all under 2.00. And in Take a Pitch/Swing Away, we take our swings at three big topics: Is Pete Crow-Armstrong's hot start sustainable? Could Aaron Judge actually chase a .400 Triple Crown? Is Sandy Alcantara's trade value completely shot with an 8.42 ERA? The Mets head out to Arizona for a three game series against the Diamondbacks and ahead of their opening game Carlos Mendoza met with Keith Raad to give an injury update on Jesse Winker along with where he believes the newly recalled Brett Baty will factor into the lineup.
We discussed potential free agency, including Giannis, and the Knicks' future despite their ongoing playoff run, noting their zero wins against the Celtics this year. A caller shared a story about Marc Malusis driving off with the gas pump still attached, prompting similar stories from other callers. Jerry's update previewed Knicks/Celtics, shared Derek Jeter's commencement speech about the necessity of failure, Jesse Winker's oblique injury, and Brett Baty's sore toe. The Moment of the Day was Jordan Davis calling in to joke around. The show concluded with more discussion about the Knicks needing to steal game one in Boston.
Hour 1 Steve Somers left behind a used cough drop, tobacco, and a chewed fingernail in the studio. The Knicks play game 1 in Detroit tonight, and while Gio is pessimistic about their chances against a team nobody predicts them to beat, he acknowledges that sports miracles happen. Jerry's first update includes Jalen Brunson on the Knicks' keys to victory and Karl-Anthony Towns' insights from playing them this season. Indiana won game one in Cleveland. The Mets lost both games of yesterday's doubleheader to the Cardinals, and the Yankees dropped their second straight series to the Rays. Jerry recapped the wild double-OT Blues/Jets game. Scottie Scheffler dominated the Byron Nelson. Boomer finished the hour discussing the Five Borough Bike Tour, where he biked 40 miles in 2 hours and 32 minutes yesterday. Hour 2 Jordan Davis, in town for Kelly Ripa's show, called in to assure they weren't being ditched. Phil Simms said on a podcast he'd give number eleven to Abdul Carter, but his family and agent declined, a situation Boomer blames on the Giants for not protecting retired numbers. Jerry's update begins with Moose celebrating the Kentucky Derby win. Jerry then played audio of Tommy Lugauer walking off his show after arguing with Shaun Morash about Jalen Brunson. The hour concluded with Quinn Ewers' agent's anger over his draft slide, prompting Boomer to contrast his situation with Shedeur's. Hour 3 We announced our Kickoff To Summer at D'Jais in Belmar with a Chris Lane concert. Tonight is game one of Knicks/Celtics, and a caller predicted Villanova grit. They took more excited calls from Knicks fans and wondered where Al would take them to dinner. Boomer playfully called Pritchard a "sonofabitch" in a positive way. Jerry's update included Mike Tirico leaving the Kentucky Derby coverage due to a nut allergy, the Yankees losing another series to the Rays, Cody Bellinger's 200th HR, the Mets' doubleheader loss in St. Louis, SNL's jab at Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson, and Kenny Albert's call of the Jets' double-OT win against the Blues. The hour ended with calls from Knicks fans, one questioning why the Knicks aren't being given a chance. Hour 4 We discussed potential free agency, including Giannis, and the Knicks' future despite their ongoing playoff run, noting their zero wins against the Celtics this year. Hour 1 The Knicks suffered a disappointing Game 2 loss to the Pistons, which Gio describes as "off and weird". Boomer believes OG Anunoby was frustrated by a lack of late-game touches. Gio criticized Thibs for blaming officials and called a potential series loss "pathetic." Jerry's update began with the sounds of the Knicks' defeat at MSG, where Thibs cited rebounding as the key difference. Meanwhile, the Mets beat the Phillies with Francisco Lindor hitting two more home runs, and Jesse Winker also homered, noting the home crowd's impact. The Yankees lost to Cleveland after Clarke Schmidt allowed consecutive home runs. Russell Wilson's press conference focused on himself, while Jets GM Darren Mougey avoided discussing Aaron Rodgers. The hour concluded with a discussion on how the Pistons' strategic play forced the Knicks to adapt. Hour 2 Gio feels Karl-Anthony Towns doesn't embody the superstar mentality, lacking visible disappointment or fire. Boomer countered that Towns simply had an off night and couldn't find his rhythm. Before Jerry's update, Gio expressed disbelief at people falling for fake Adam Schefter reports on X. Jerry's update featured Mike Breen's call of the Knicks' Game 2 loss, with Thibs discussing the need to win differently. They then played a clip of the Clippers' play-by-play announcer, whom they found unauthentic, and mentioned Shaq abruptly leaving the set due to olive oil consumption. Mavericks GM Nico Harrison stated he underestimated Luka's importance to fans. Jazz Chisholm homered in their loss to Cleveland, while the Mets defeated the Phillies, with Jesse Winker and Lindor hitting home runs, improving their home record to 10-1. Jalen Milroe discussed his relationship with Malik Nabers on Kay Adams' show. Gio expressed enthusiasm for the Giants potentially drafting Jalen Milroe with their second pick, citing Todd McShay's assessment of him as the best running quarterback prospect ever evaluated. Hour 3 The Mets are thriving at home, drawing large crowds and benefiting from outstanding pitching. Jesse Winker highlighted the home-field advantage. Boomer joked they won't need Grimace this year. Gio jokingly blamed Fat Joe's presence at the Knicks game for their loss, citing a "Fat Joe curse." Jerry's update began with the Knicks' Game 2 defeat at the Garden, where Coach Thibs criticized the foul shot disparity. Charles Barkley advised Mavs GM Nico Harrison to stop doing press conferences. The Yankees lost to Cleveland after Clarke Schmidt gave up consecutive home runs. The Mets beat the Phillies, though Edwin Diaz made it tense, with Carlos Mendoza commenting on his performance. Jalen Milroe addressed potentially joining the Giants QB room. The hour concluded with Jared from Audacy's digital department discussing strategies to increase YouTube viewership for Al & Jerry's Postgame Podcast. Hour 4 Boomer is anticipating the NFL draft on Thursday and the subsequent Friday show covering both the draft and Knicks/Pistons Game 3, following the Knicks' Game 2 loss which tied the series 1-1, a series Gio feels has been competitive and physical, though the Knicks are slightly underperforming. Jerry's final update led with audio of the Knicks' loss. "Inside The NBA" apologized for falsely reporting someone's death. Thibs was frustrated by perceived officiating disparities favoring the Pistons. The Mets defeated the Phillies with Francisco Lindor hitting two more home runs, while Clarke Schmidt allowed consecutive home runs in the Yankees' loss. An Eagles WR had his car stolen in Philadelphia. The Moment of the Day highlighted the Clippers' play-by-play announcer's voice. The show concluded with a discussion about the chilly weather expected for the NFL draft in Green Bay.
Jerry has the sounds of the Knicks losing at MSG. Thibs talked about rebounding being the difference in the game. The Mets beat the Phillies and Francisco Lindor hit 2 more home runs and now has a lead off HR in two straight games. Jesse Winker also homered and talked about the home crowd being hard on the opponents.
The Mets have been great at home and they are getting huge crowds for this early in the season. There is so much positivity with Steve Cohen right now. Mets pitching has been outstanding so far as well. Jesse Winker talked about how the stadium being full is a huge advantage for the Mets. Boomer doesn't think they'll need Grimace this year.

Kind of a weird stat line. Winker, in my view, is sneaky good as a fifth outfielder, but I don't think the Mets agree as he's clearly in a platoon role at DH with Starling Marte.Segment 3 – Waiver WireSegment 4 – Closer ReportClose
On a cold and rainy night for baseball, the Mets picked up an inspiring late-inning win, reminiscent of the latter half of the 2024 season. Former Met Chris Bassitt kept the Mets lineup off balance for most of the game. Griffin Canning matched him stride for stride early, but ultimately his pitch count got him out of the game with no outs recorded in the 5th.The Mets bullpen was solid once again, with Butto only allowing one run, but the star was Huascar Brazobán. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings that kept the Mets within striking distance. Jesse Winker tied the game with his second triple of the night in the 8th, and Francisco Lindor hit a walkoff sac fly to end it, off the first pitch thrown by Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman. Mets go for the sweep today! #LGM #Mets #MetsBaseball

David Stearns was asked about Jose Iglesias and Jesse Winker potentially coming back. Tommy DeVito will get the start this weekend against Baltimore. Aaron Rodgers talked about just being on the edge of doing great things. Joe Burrow talked about the burglary and feels his privacy has been violated in more ways than one. The Knicks got bounced from the cup in their loss to the Hawks.
Bill Belichick has taken the job at UNC. For those wondering how he'll get 18 year old kids to buy in, Gio said all you need to look at is the fact he got a 24 year old woman to have relations with him. No NFL teams seemed to have real interest in Belichick. Boomer said North Carolina is desperate to make themselves relevant. Boomer also thinks NFL owners may not like him dating such a younger woman with him being 72. Jerry is here for his first update of the day, but first Boomer said he's worried about C-Mac because of the whole Juan Soto situation. The Knicks got bounced from the cup in their loss to the Hawks. In the final segment of the hour, we took calls on Belichick going to UNC. Hour 2 Boomer is very congested and has some sort of device you put in your nose where one side sucks and one side blows. He tries it on air and it is disgusting. We then went into all the news and rumors we got about the drones in NJ. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Scott Boras and his terrible puns regarding MLB free agency. Tua talked about the great lengths he goes through to not get burglarized. The Knicks lost to the Hawks and Trae Young at the Garden. In the final segment of the hour, we wrapped up our talk about the drones/UAPs over NJ. Hour 3 We talked about Bill Belichick taking the head coaching job at UNC. Now that Belichick is not available, it seems likely that Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will be back with the Giants. We went over the history of their drafts and how successful they were in the NFL. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Scott Boras talking about Pete Alonso. Mike Francesa was on with BT & Sal & they asked him about the WFAN Mount Rushmore. The Louisville head coach was asked about his difficult stretch, and he said all is good his wife is hot. Shannon Sharpe and Ochocinco talked about Belichick going to UNC and Ocho working with him on Inside The NFL. Aaron Rodgers talked about how great SportsCenter was but now it's all just talk shows. The Hawks beat the Knicks at the Garden and Trae Young had more fun at midcourt. In the final segment of the hour, Gio felt old watching Hard Knocks AFC North when Joey Porter was telling stories. Hour 4 We talked about this weekend's Army/Navy game and whether Joe Biden and Donald Trump will both be in attendance. Today is the Audacy Christmas party and Gio jokes that it's being held in the freight elevator. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with audio from Mike Lombardi talking about going with Belichick to UNC. Aaron Rodgers talked about how he's feeling after the Miami game. AJ Brown talked to the media and said he has no issues with Jalen Hurts. Hurts also said they are good. Gary Vee echoes Jerry and says we're all going to die, so go do something. We talked about Al and his dog and how they spend their days and Jerry made that Moment of The Day. In the final segment of the show, Gio has no power at home probably because of the high winds. Boomer said that Sydney and Matt are expecting twins. Gio talked about his wife giving out too much information on the Sayville Moms Facebook page.

The Mets got shutout in game 1 of the NLCS in Los Angeles. Kodai Senga only faced 10 batters and the game felt over when he walked the bases loaded. Starting Senga in the NLDS didn't seem like a great idea, but it worked out. Last night did not work out. The Giants lost to the Bengals last night and they were very boring doing it. They just can't score. Boomer was impressed with the Giants defense, but they were victimized by a team that cannot get into the endzone. The NFC East is not a good division. The Giants had a real opportunity to keep themselves in the conversation for winning the division. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of Howie Rose as the Mets lost game 1. Carlos Mendoza talked about Senga's performance. Jesse Winker gave props to Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty. Carlos Rodon will start tonight for the Yankees and he talked about not having social media on his phone. Jerry has the sounds of Joe Burrow running for a 47 yard TD. Daniel Jones talked about the interception he threw in the red zone. The Jets host the Bills tonight in Jeff Ulbrich's head coaching debut. The Cowboys lost 47-9 at home, again. Jerry Jones talked about the beatdown. In the final segment of the hour, Gio thinks the Jets are going to get a boost from the coaching change. Jay Glazer reported that the Jets are going to be a run dominant team tonight.
Boomer started the hour with some complaint about the refs in a Rangers game over the weekend. Whatever. The Dodgers shutout the Mets last night and that's exactly what Dodgers pitchers do, consistently. That is a bad scene for the Mets. Boomer thought the Mets looked overwhelmed at the plate. The Mets need to come home with the series at 1-1. You have to get the split on the road. You can watch the Mets before the Yankees and Jets even start tonight. The afternoon show is going to be at the American Dream Mall today. Haason Reddick just hired Drew Rosenhaus to represent him to get a deal done with the Jets. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of Howie Rose as the Dodgers pounded the Mets, 9-0. Jesse Winker talked about his baserunning blunder. Carlos Mendoza talked about Kodai Senga's terrible performance. Evan Roberts took to his Rico Brogna podcast and Jerry has some clips. Jerry also has the sounds of Bob Papa as the Bengals beat the Giants. The Giants can't seem to score touchdowns at home. Mike McCarthy tried to explain why the Cowboys got smoked by the Lions. In the final segment of the hour, Donte DiVincenzo got into it with Knicks coaches during a preseason game in his return to MSG.
If the Yankees are going to win the World Series, we are going to need a dominant performance from Carlos Rodon. Boomer would tell him to keep his emotions in check and have a pitch sequence he believes in. The Yankees are where we expected them to be. Boomer said he's, ‘positive Boom-Pa'. Gio wonders what kind of series we'll get from Aaron Judge. Jerry returns for an update but first Boomer wonders why Malik Nabers was at a concert this week if he couldn't play. Jerry starts with the sounds of Howie Rose as Jesse Winker made a huge baserunning mistake. Aaron Boone has had it with people saying Jose Ramirez is underrated and underappreciated. We heard from Bengals radio as Joe Burrow ran it for a 47 yard score. Caleb Williams threw 4 TDs in London to beat the Jags. Jerry Jones is not considering firing Mike McCarthy in season. In the final segment of the hour, the Giants are going to be looking for a quarterback again. He is so inconsistent, especially at home. They have scored a total of 1 touchdown in the last 4 home games. Titans, Raiders, Panthers and Dolphins will also be looking for a quarterback. If the Patriots get the top pick, they can trade for a boatload of picks. Drake Maye showed some promise yesterday with 3 TDs. He also had 3 turnovers. Daniel Jones will not be the QB here next year. The Giants have no choice but to draft a QB.
