Episode Notes Hello and welcome to the Chip Away podcast, my names Adam and I talk with passionate construction professionals and try to chip away at what it is to build, create and shape the landscape we live in. My guest for this episode is Sean Weir. Sean is a Fitness professional who owns multiple gyms over in Melbourne, Australia. Sean is the creator of the Shaka Project -A initiative that aims at Uniting blokes to start conversations about Men's mental health. Encouraging connection, mate-ship & brotherhood through the shaka, all inspired by a Dad's love for his kids & his mates. As well as an Instagram page that promotes positive mental wellbeing and speaking up on mental health. The Shaka Project have a range of apparel that helps spread the word and begin conversations about how as men, we can be a part of reducing the stigma of mental health and do something positive for ourselves and those around us. I bring up mental health a bit on this podcast as it is a big issue in construction and is something close to my heart personally. I care about the well-being of my fellow brothers and sisters in this industry and feel that the more open we can be, the better experiences we can have at work which has a flow on effect to all that we do every day. I have to give fair warning here, neither Sean or myself are mental health professionals and nor do we claim to be. What you hear is what you get, two blokes having a yarn about things blokes should perhaps be yarning about a bit more often. Sean really tells his own story well and gets into some pretty heavy and sensitive areas that some of you may find difficult to listen to. Therefore I can appreciate that this podcast is perhaps not for everyone as depression and suicide are topics that are not to be treated lightly. On another note I have to apologise in advance for some of the audio quality you are about hear. There were some lagging problems that I couldn’t clean up in the edit unfortunately. But I feel the podcast is coherent and very listenable all thanks to Sean’s brilliant speaking and story telling ability! It was a pleasure to get to do this podcast and I hope you can get something out of what Sean has to say. He is a guy who walks the walk and I take my hat off to him for that. So without further ado, I bring you Sean Weir from the Shaka project! Thanks very much to Sean for his time and thoughtful words on this one. I have so much respect for the way he has been able to learn and grow from his experiences and shape a movement that has given back to so many. My guest for this episode is Terrence Yii. Originally from Malaysia, Terrance is a project manager for a Construction company here in Christchurch, New Zealand. Terrance has a background in the industry that spans multiple countries and disciplines and brings together experiences and perspectives from other industries that has given him a unique way of solving construction problems. Although many aspects of construction are similar across the world, its also true that each place do things in their own way. Here in New Zealand, and especially in Christchurch in the earthquake re-build we have a lot of foreign professionals coming in and contributing to our industry across all levels. One of the reasons I wanted to speak with Terrance is to give a voice to the stories of the many hard-working foreign workers that are helping re-build and reimagine our city. Many, like Terrance have left their family overseas and make daily sacrifices to improve not only their own situation, but that of our infrastructure and we are all very great full for their efforts. We speak on the contrasts and similarities of construction practises and cultures between countries and Terrance shares some hair-raising stories of his experiences on job sites in the Malay Archipelago. My guest for this episode is Nick Moore. This episode is the first in a series of podcasts that I have titled “The Path”. Nick is just weeks into his carpentry apprenticeship and I thought it would make a cool series that tracks his story through his apprentice journey as he progresses to becoming a qualified builder. I got the idea from ‘Concord Carpenter’s ‘series – green to great which I thought was awesome and so I wanted to replicate something similar in a podcast format where I check in with Nick a few times a year to see how he is getting on. Nick worked as a driller for a number of years all over the world but decided to chase a dream that never quite left him since he was a young fella and that was to give carpentry a crack. Nick is all in and I appreciate his perspective having already climbed the ladder of one career and knowing what attitude it takes to succeed in a work environment. It was great getting to know Nick, I reckon he will make a great participant in this series and I cant wait to follow along with his journey and hope that this series can be something that’s relatable for apprentices out there and serve as a story for those thinking about a career in construction! Thanks very much to Nick for his time and willingness to be a part of this series! We will catch up with him soon and get a few new yarns out of him! My guest for this episode is Jade Kake. Jade Kake is an architectural designer, writer and housing advocate. Her design practice, Matakohe Architecture and urbanism is focussed on working with Māori organisations on their marae, papakāinga and civic projects, and in working with mana whenua groups to express their cultural values and narratives through the design of their physical environments. Jade is also the host of a brilliant podcast by the name of Indigenous Urbanism which is a place-based storytelling podcast about the spaces we inhabit, and the community drivers and practitioners who are shaping those environments and decolonising through design. It was a treat to get to speak with someone who is so invested in design and thinks deeply about how we react to and inhabit our environment! It was a really mind opening conversation that I took a lot away from and I hope you can too! Thanks very much to Jade for her time and educational conversation! I really enjoyed hearing about the care and effort that goes into the process of designing and creating the spaces Jade works with. It’s so much fun listening to someone who is so passionate about what they do and I feel that it’s something beautiful about our industry, where you can have a job as rewarding as Jades where she is able to express herself and provide meaningful spaces in which to honour the past and create memories for the future. I really would encourage you to go and check out her podcast! It has a way better production level than this old thing! Episode Notes Hello and welcome to the Chip Away Podcast! For episode 7 I am joined by Liam the Mental Health Sparky, Liam is an apprentice electrician and runs the Instagram page @mentalhealth_sparky. It was a pleasure getting to have this conversation with Liam, he is doing much needed work through Instagram to raise awareness of the mental health issue in construction. I really appreciate that Liam is willing to put himself on the line and speak up about this crucial issue in our industry. I take my hat off to his willingness to get real and communicate his own stories about the stigma of mental health and applaud his efforts to try and do what he can in his own way. Forewarning, neither Liam or myself are mental health experts or professionals and nor do we claim to be. I really wanted this to just be an open and honest discussion between two construction professionals about mental health in our industry and I feel we achieved that. We both want to get the ball rolling in whatever way we can on this issue and what we did do was gave it our best crack. I hope that there may be some take-aways from this episode, we talk about depression, opening up about mental health, drugs and alcohol, anxiety, and what it takes to be vulnerable in the construction industry.
