This week we have two teams go head to head creating custom skins for random champions. 

There is a custom observed by some people to fast on Ereb Rosh Hashanah. Although there are those who fast every month on the day before Rosh Hodesh – a fast called "Yom Kippur Katan" – the custom to fast on Ereb Rosh Hashanah is mentioned by the Shulhan Aruch, and is thus to be treated with special gravity. The source for this custom is a passage in the Midrash, cited by the Tur, which draws an analogy to a country whose citizens owed an enormous sum of money in back taxes which they could not afford to pay. They decided to send a small delegation to the king, who agreed to cancel one-third of the debt. But as the day approached when the payment was due, the people realized that they still had nowhere near the amount. They therefore sent a much larger delegation to plead their case before the king. Once again, the king relented and waived another third. The day came, and the people still found themselves unable to pay. The entire citizenry – all the men, women and children – came out to greet the king with tears and pleas, and the king accepted their pleas and waived the entire debt. Similarly, the Midrash comments, on Ereb Rosh Hashanah, as we realize that we are unable to "pay our debt" to the Almighty, select individuals volunteer to fast and plead to G-d, who waives one-third of our "debt." During the Aseret Yemeh Teshuba between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as we get even closer, more people come before G-d in fasting to ask for a reprieve, and another third is cancelled. Finally, on Yom Kippur, we all fast and G-d grants us complete forgiveness. It is therefore appropriate for anyone who can – including youngsters above the age of Bar Misva – to observe this fast on Ereb Rosh Hashanah to be part of this initial "delegation" which comes before G-d to ask for forgiveness. Needless to say, those who are frail or elderly, and those who have trouble fasting, should not observe this fast, as it is not strictly required.One might ask how it is possible that the voluntary fast of Ereb Rosh Hashanah can accomplish just as much as the obligatory fast of Yom Kippur. According to the Midrash, both these fasts are capable of atoning for one-third of our sins. Is it conceivable that the fast of Ereb Rosh Hashanah is as significant and effective as the fast of Yom Kippur?Rabbi Hillel Haber explained that the first "reduction" is always the easiest. If a person wants to purchase a piece of merchandise and sets out to negotiate a price reduction, the seller might show some flexibility at first and agree to reduce the price by one-third. But afterward, he will be much less likely to agree to a further reduction. Certainly, he will not likely be prepared to offer the merchandise free of charge. Accordingly, the customary fast of Ereb Rosh Hashanah accomplishes the relatively "easy" task of securing a reduction. But the fast of Yom Kippur accomplishes something far greater – allowing us to earn complete atonement "for free."It should be noted that those who normally fast on Ereb Rosh Hodesh will fast the day before Ereb Rosh Hodesh if the Molad (first appearance of the new moon) occurs before that day. The Yom Kippur Katan fast must be observed before the Molad, and it thus occasionally becomes necessary to fast the day before Ereb Rosh Hodesh. When it comes to the fast of Ereb Rosh Hashanah, however, the time of the Molad is immaterial. Even if the Molad occurs before Ereb Rosh Hashanah, nevertheless, the fast is observed on the day of Ereb Rosh Hashanah.Summary: There is a custom to fast on Ereb Rosh Hashanah, and those who are able to observe this custom without too much difficulty should do so.

Brenton Rickard is the 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the Men's 200 Breaststroke. He picked up a second silver in the Men's 4x100 Medley Relay. A year later, in Rome, Rickard became World Champion and WORLD RECORD holder the 100 Breast posting a 58.58. Brett and Brenton reminisce about swimming fast, competing in the strongest breaststroke era ever, his competitors, coaches and more. Recently, the International Olympic Committee dropped doping charges against him. Charges stemming from a re-test of samples going back to the 2012 London Olympics. There is a custom to dip the Halla in either sugar or honey at the beginning of the Rosh Hashanah meals. The Kaf Ha'haim (Rav Yaakov Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) writes that the sugar or honey does not serve as a substitute for salt. The requirement to dip bread in salt anytime a person eats bread applies on Rosh Hashanah no less than on any other day of the year. Therefore, on Rosh Hashanah, after one recites the Beracha of "Hamosi," he should dip the Halla in salt three times, as usual, and then add a bit of sugar or honey. The addition of sugar or honey does not obviate the need for salt.There is another custom that some people observe to use specifically round Hallot on Rosh Hashanah, as opposed to the normal oval-shaped, braded loaves. The Hatam Sofer (Rabbi Moshe Sofer of Pressburg, 1762-1839) explained this custom as an expression of our hopes and prayers that we will receive boundless blessings during the coming year. Circles are unique in that they have no beginning or end. We therefore use round loaves of bread on Rosh Hashanah as a symbol of our hopes that God will bestow unending blessings upon us and the entire Jewish nation during the coming year.

Neil Hanson is one of the most interesting people we know. He's written books on World War I, the Spanish Armada, and the fire that destroyed London in 1666. He once teamed up with history's greatest treasure hunter to tell the story of retrieving over $100 million in gold from a sunken Soviet ship in the arctic. He's been the owner of the highest Inn in all of Great Britain. And, in 1999 he published a book called The Custom of the Sea, which tells the story of a shipwrecked crew that was put on trial in London after resorting to cannibalism. Their ship, which fell victim to forty-foot waves off the coast of Africa in 1884, was named the Mignonette, and Hanson's book was so good that in 2004 it inspired an album by an up-and-coming group of musicians called The Avett Brothers. By the end of the campaign (or maybe multiple campaigns) have a legendary creature, a class, and a 100 card singleton deck, hence the name Classmander. The idea: Play many games of Classmander over a long period of time, similar to a D&D campaign length. Basically a TTRPG but instead of dice rolling to resolve combat, you play games of Magic. We have 3 spreadsheets so far (see, it's serious!) Monster Manual This is the least fleshed out bit so far.  You could also have a higher-level skeleton deck that runs cards like Skeletal Swarming and Death Baron The idea for this is to create “encounter decks”, so for example you could have a skeleton deck with regenerating creatures, that the players will have to team up to get out of the way, because regenerating taps the creature This is a spreadsheet with a tab for each class. I went through the exercise of creating the starting level 1 Cleric deck (I have added cards to some of the other Classes, but very few).  Cleric Classmanders: Kitsune Diviner, Keepers of the faith, Samite Healer The idea is for the deck to be as “bad” as possible at the start. The lower you start, the more you have to gain, and that's going to be the fun part of this game, Character progression! You know, flavorful stuff like Bag of Holding. Basically people playing in pods/campaigns will ask to have certain cards they want to add to their decks added to the item list Items Tab Same idea as the items tab, but with creatures you want to add to your deck. Might start off with a base price for common, and then more for an uncommon, and more for rare, and more still for mythic Rare. Maybe legendary creatures cost a bunch? Still playing with this idea Hirelings The idea here is that we can have a Drizzt deck, or a Minsc deck. Some adventurer that can show up and either help the players, or be an obstacle. NPCs This is going to be a template, like the kind you print out for D&D characters, it's still pretty rough currently. Character Sheet There isn't much here, but the idea is that by level 20, which should be max level, you will have: Starting life total of 40 (maybe we can let this go lower/higher based on class?) 7 Starting hand size A cool legendary creature at the helm of your deck Lots of sweet cards in your deck. We can even have some cards gifted to each character upon level up Level Up Guide Classmander Core Rulebook Let's flesh out the details a bit more We do not have a campaign created, but would be cool if we eventually get there. In the meantime, it might be fun to get a party together, and just play a few rounds against some of the encounter decks, and see what leveling up could look like The idea here is that all good adventurers take the time to keep their skills sharp, so why not have a sparring match (Montage!) against 3 other players of similar level? Good way to gain experience, and maybe gold. We're gonna need a montage! How do you get experience? The plan is to let Patrons contribute to the spreadsheets. Ideally, a single patron could take on the challenge of creating the level 1 deck for a particular class.  Also, we plan to add a Slack channel, so that people can share ideas.
