This is a link post. "Getting Things in Order: An Introduction to the R Package seriation": Seriation [or "ordination"), i.e., finding a suitable linear order for a set of objects given data and a loss or merit function, is a basic problem in data analysis. Caused by the problem's combinatorial nature, it is hard to solve for all but very small sets. Nevertheless, both exact solution methods and heuristics are available. In this paper we present the package seriation which provides an infrastructure for seriation with R. The infrastructure comprises data structures to represent linear orders as permutation vectors, a wide array of seriation methods using a consistent interface, a method to calculate the value of various loss and merit functions, and several visualization techniques which build on seriation. To illustrate how easily the package can be applied for a variety of applications, a comprehensive collection of [...] --- First published: May 28th, 2025 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/u2ww8yKp9xAB6qzcr/if-you-re-not-sure-how-to-sort-a-list-or-grid-seriate-it Linkpost URL:https://www.jstatsoft.org/article/download/v025i03/227 --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

Welcome to an all-new bonus episode of Films for the Void! In this episode, Landon interviews Cheekface - Los Angeles indie rock band Cheekface. Formed in 2017, the band combine a penchant for lyrical quips and a dry-aged sense of humor with a sound often compared anywhere from Pavement to LCD Soundsystem. Releasing a consistent stream of new music and making waves in 2022 with their record Too Much to Ask, the band recently announced a full US tour with Yungatita, happening this spring. However, that's not all: Just three weeks into the New Year, the band surprised fans with a brand new full length record, It's Sorted, released independently on their label New Professor.Landon chats with vocalist/guitarist Greg Katz, bassist Amanda Tannen, and drummer Echo Edwards about It's Sorted, collaborating on lyrics, changes in the hardcore scene, being so uncool that it's cool again, and some of their favorite movies - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:00 Interview w/ Cheekface00:30:03 Round Robin Movie DiscussionTWITTER: @films_void$3/MONTH PATREON: patreon.com/films_voidLANDON'S TWITTER @igotdefevermanLANDON'S INSTAGRAM @duhfeverLANDON'S LETTERBOXD @landondefeverERIC'S TWITTER @ericwiththehairERIC'S INSTAGRAM @ericwiththebeardERIC'S LETTERBOXD @ericwiththehairArtwork by Annie CurleTheme Music by Meghan Gove
He's publicly objected to his own Liberal government and the prime minister turning against Israel's war on Hamas. He fought for his party to stand firm for Quebec anglophones against the province's attacks — and lost. Anthony Housefather has been breaking publicly a lot lately with his own Liberal party on major issues. This week, host Brian Lilley talks to Housefather about what it's been like to lose these key policy battles and how he manages to keep working alongside caucus colleagues when they are opposed to his own principles. Vaping rates among young people appear to be trending in the right direction. Next week, disposable vapes must have removable batteries, child safety features and a maximum nicotine strength of 20-milligrams per millilitre. A survey also shows the number of Year 10 students who regularly vape has fallen for a second year in a row. Action on Smoking and Health chair Robert Beaglehole told Mike Hosking we seem to be getting things right at last. He says it looks like they're moving on, and the news at the moment is relatively good. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Pittsburgh Penguins got a massive win against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night and Hunter is here to recap it with a special guest. With Patrick Damp out for just one day, Hunter brought in Nick Brlansky to discuss the game and they started with the story in net. They look at how great Tristan Jarry played before he got hurt and hope that it's nothing serious before diving into the play of Magnus Hellberg and how he could shut the door. After that, they look at how Radim Zohorna continues to play excellent hockey for this team and how he continues to provide a spark for the third line. They then get into how the Penguins played some excellent shutdown hockey and whether that needs to be the blueprint before ending the show with whether this was the "get back" game for the Penguins.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsWith all the parts you need at the prices you want, it's easy to turn your car into the MVP and bring home that win.
