On April 19, Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga won a historic victory, voting by 73 percent to join the United Auto Workers, or UAW. This was the first-ever union victory at a foreign auto plant in the South, and a huge start to UAW's national campaign to organize 150,000 non-union auto workers in the United States, at companies like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Tesla. But this success in Chattanooga was soon followed by a disappointing loss at a Mercedes-Benz near Tuscaloosa on May 19, where 56 percent of workers voted against unionizing. Why did the UAW campaign win at Volkswagen and lose at Mercedes? On Strike speaks with Logan Swan, a union Ironworker with Ironworkers Local 86 and a casual longshoreman represented by ILWU Local 19, and member of Workers Strike Back. Logan tells us about what went right and what went wrong, and how those lessons can be applied in order to restart the fight to unionize the Mercedes-Benz plant. In both the labor movement and in social movements, we need to soberly assess the lessons from both our victories and our setbacks. The lessons that Logan shares in this episode will be needed everywhere, especially in the South, which has long been a stronghold for big business and their reactionary, anti-union politics. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onstrikeshow/support

This week marks a special two-part series of Construction Record podcast episodes tied into our national feature series Cracks in the Foundation: Mental Health, Substance Use and Construction. In this first episode, Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson looks at the journeys of three different individuals as they entered the construction industry while struggling with substance use. Ironworker and project supervisor Rob Trymbulak, counsellor Julian Toy and HeroWork Victoria executive director Trevor Botkin each turned to substance use for different reasons but all eventually hit the point where they knew they had to change their lives if they wanted to survive. Hixson also spoke to Vancouver Island Construction Association president Rory Kumala for an industry perspective on the “other pandemic” of substance use and also discussed struggles with mental health and what associations and other stakeholders can do to help. You can listen to The Construction Record and TCR Express on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section and we recommend also listening to our recent interview with BCCSA president Mike McKenna and Work To Wellness founder Diana Vissers about the Re-Mind mental health resource site here. Thanks for listening and we'll see you next week. DCN-JOC News Services

Since freshman year, Trey Reese has had a primary goal: play college basketball at the Division I level. Though Reese has a few more seasons to showcase his talent for Montrose High School, he'll get an opportunity to get some recruiting eyes on his play this summer. The United World Games are considered the largest youth sports tournament in Europe, hosting sports like basketball, hockey, soccer, softball and more. The tournament will be held in Austria over the course of three days. Congratulations Trey! Now, our feature story. That was Governor Jared Polis in a recent announcement. On Wednesday, Colorado moved to the next group on the vaccine priority plan — Phase 1B. Polis also announced more people will be added to the phase. Those added include individuals who are over 70 years old, teachers, state government officials, grocery store employees, postal workers, and journalists on the frontlines. Originally, only healthcare workers, first responders and workers in dental and hospice settings were included in Phase 1B. To administer the tests, State officials will work with local public health departments to set up programs. Polis said the state decided to include Older Coloradans in Phase 1B with data showing that 78% of coronavirus deaths come from those 70 and older. There was no clear indication on how Phase 1B will be rolled out in each county, but the number of doses available is determined by federal and state allocations. Those allocations are based on population, priority groups and incidence of disease. After Phase 1B, is Phase 2, which has no official start date yet. It is expected to start in the spring, and includes people aged 65 — 69, individuals aged 16 to 64 with health conditions such as obesity, chronic lung disease and heart disease, and other essential workers. Phase 3, which includes the general population, is expected to start in the summer. On Wednesday, Montrose County recorded 23 new cases. There were 483 active cases as of Wednesday and 2,048 confirmed cases overall since testing data started being collected, and the the two week positivity rate in the county sits at 14.7%. According to the update, there are currently four hospitalized with COVID-19 in Montrose County. Before we go, we'd like to take a moment to remember the life of Don McClemans of Montrose. Don was born in Long Beach, California. He spent his childhood in San Pedro, California, and graduated from San Pedro High School in 1955. In 1954 he married Janice Downey, who survives him. Don was an Ironworker for Local #433 in Los Angeles for 36 years. He was a resident of Montrose for the last 28 years. Don also celebrated 46 years of sobriety in A.A. Her career path transitioned from a variety of vocations into welding and ironwork at the age of 30! Learn how this amazing lady didn't settle for less, and persistence and resilience, found her dream job. Danielle Shaw, Journeywoman (Journey-Ma'am) IronworkerI became interested in the trades at age 30 after seeing so many men making good money, and I was working just as hard making half the amount. My dad is a retired welder/ boilermaker (Local 359) and I think that's why I gravitated towards welding. After my training, I applied to close to 100 welding jobs and was terribly discouraged. The typical responses were, “we lift too heavy of things”, “you would be a distraction”, “you don't look like a welder”. After I got a job welding production line bike parts for just above minimum wage, I finally got my break when the Ironworkers local 97 called me up for a 5-day shutdown, and I never left! I started my apprenticeship shortly after I started and was so impressed with the process, I felt like I was finally learning in a way that fit me. Being taught in a classroom setting then going out into the field in between levels to learn hands on what we've been taught with my journeyman as a mentor. I was learning, gaining skills and confidence with every year that passed, and making money! My apprenticeship was a bit longer than most as I became pregnant halfway through it. Although I took a 2-year hiatus from work, I did manage to attend my level 2, 5 months pregnant. Pretty sure I was the only pregnant woman the steel trades building had seen toting a tool belt and fabricating a wide flange beam.I have now completed my apprenticeship and can proudly say I am a Journeywoman Ironworker. I am so thankful for the support and confidence from my fiancé as well as my fellow brother and sisters in this great trade. careers, career transition, career planning, welding, welder, labor, labor shortage, workers, construction, general construction, shut downs, turnarounds, transportation
In this episode we talk about the physical demands and benefits of a job in the trades, as well as some less obvious things to consider. There's a lot of things you can replace in your lifetime, but your body isn't one of them, so take good care of it and it will take good care of you.
An Ironworker and a corrections Officer stop by to tell some stories to Tuna.
