Today Razib talks to Tim Lee, a previous guest on Unsupervised Learning. Lee hosts Understanding AI. Lee covered tech more generally for a decade for Washington Post, Ars Technica, and Vox.com. He has a master's degree in computer science from Princeton. Lee writes extensively about general AI issues, from Deep Research's capabilities to the state of large language models. But one of the major areas he has focused on is self-driving cars. With expansion of Waymo to Austin, and this June's debut of Tesla's robotaxis, Razib wanted to talk to Lee about the state of the industry. They discuss the controversies relating to safety and self-driving cars. Is it true, as some research suggests, that Waymo and self-driving cars are safer than human-driven cars? What about the accidents Waymos have been implicated in? Is it true that they were actually due to human error and recklessness, rather than the self-driving cars themselves? Lee also contrasts the different companies' strategies in the sector, from Waymo to Zoox to Tesla. Razib also asks him about the fact that self-driving cars' imminent arrival seems to have been overhyped five years ago, with Andrew Yang predicting trucker mass unemployment, to the reality that Waymo has now surpassed Lyft in ride volume in San Francisco. They also discuss the limitations of self-driving cars in terms of their ability to navigate cities and regions where snow might be a major impediment, and why there has been a delay in their expansion to freeway routes.

Today on Memorial Day Sunday, evangelist and veteran Tim Lee brings to us a message from Revelation 20.
Welcome to Episode 31 of the Trainer's Bullpen, ‘Motor Learning Feedback' with Dr. Tim Lee. The type of feedback that a trainer or coach gives their students and the manner in which that feedback is provided is of critical importance to the effective of how well motor skills are acquired, retained and transferred. The most common type of feedback that is often applied in the law enforcement motor skill learning environment is described as ‘quick and corrective'. That is, the trainer views mistakes and errors as enemies and therefore is very quick to step in and provide feedback when the student is struggling. In addition, the feedback that is usually provided is highly corrective ‘this is what you are doing wrong, this is what you need to do to correct it, now do that'. Ironically, while most prevalent, this type of feedback has been demonstrated to result in the worst retention and transfer of movement skills to the ‘real world'. In this interview, Motor Learning expert, researcher, accomplished author and coach for the Titleist Performance Institute, Dr. Tim Lee will discuss the impact of feedback and the methods of feedback that trainers should consider in order to optimize the learning potential of their students. In this interview we discuss: · The different types of feedback – Inherent and Augmented · Using knowledge of results rather than knowledge of performance feedback · The importance of student motivation and how feedback can either bolster, or impair, student motivation · The relationship between feedback types and the students focus of attention · The danger of creating students who are ‘feedback dependent' and how to avoid this from happening · The use of video as a feedback tool · The timing of feedback – hint – delayed feedback is usually optimal · Bandwidth feedback – what it is and how to apply it to really maximize your feedback potential for motor learning. Have your pen and paper ready. This interview contains very important information to help you advance your tradecraft as a trainer! As a reminder, all resources, documents and links are available to you at www.trainersbullpen.com Dr. Tim Lee can be contacted at scapps@mcmaster.ca

Welcome to episode 25 of the Trainer's Bullpen. Training Under Pressure with Dr. Tim Lee. If you are interested in how to train officers for the best decision making and motor performance on the street, this interview is for you as Dr. Lee blows several training myths out of the water. In this episode, we welcome back to the bullpen, Dr. Tim Lee, professor emeritus of motor learning from McMaster University to discuss the relationship between pressure, training under pressure, and officer performance in the line of duty where it counts the most. Have paper and pen ready as Dr. Lee discusses the role of pressure in law enforcement training and the effect of pressure on officer performance in real life shooting and defensive tactics situations. We also discuss how attention and perception are affected by pressure; how skills ‘well rehearsed' in low pressure learning environments can quickly collapse under real threat conditions. In addition, Tim discusses how pressure affects attentional processes, internal vs external attention, that can adversely affect perception and performance. Also discussed is the ‘Progression / regression' theory of motor learning and the difference between ‘performance' improvements and real ‘learning' including online and offline learning. The importance of training under conditions of realistic pressure to develop the ability to perform under those same conditions in ‘the real world.' Why ‘what we practice' is ‘what we learn' and therefore why skills practiced in sterile or low-pressure learning environments don't transfer well. The importance of richly varying and contextualizing your learning environment to develop adaptable skill application in pressure conditions. And many other critical concepts and practical takeaways for trainers.

Ep #675 Of The Clay Edwards Show On 103.9 WYAB (01/15/24) 1. A local legend in the music scene passed away over the weekend, Tim Lee was a fixture at the Dock and other venues that hosted traveling cover bands like Splendid Chaos, Spank The Monkey & more. I tell my Tim Lee story to open the show 2. The Queers For Palestine group rioted, looted and inserrected outside the White House Saturday night, so badly that the staff and president had to be evacuated but you barely saw a mention of it on any media outlets 3. Democrat Fulton County, Georgia D.A. Fani Willis had the audacity to step up to a church pulpit in Atlanta Sunday and say "Black women can't be expected to be perfect and save the world" admitting to being a homewrecking whore and blaming it on racist Trump supporters 4. This paupers cemetery story will not go away, and now we're seeing local and national content creators attempting to make it about racism without knowing the demographics of central Mississippi and the fact that any and all decision makers in Hinds county / Jackson have been 100% black for the better part of the last 25 years Check out my website at Www.ClayEdwardsShow.Com for all things Clay

Sunday Evening Sermon with Brother Tim Lee from Ten Mile Baptist Church in McLeansboro, Illinois
Today's guests make me want to do this podcast outdoors. That's because I'm join by Tim Lee and Susan Bauer-Lee from the band Bark. When we recorded this, they were just hanging outside on a beautiful Mississippi evening. And the way this band came together is really wild. Actually, the way the previous band, The Tim Lee 3, came together is wild. Bark was just the natural progression of that. Tim grew up with church music all over the place as his dad was a minister. And Susan's first concert was The Monkees with The Who opening up! Or at least she's been told that. Tim has been in bands since the 80's like Let's Active and Marty Jones, but took a decade off during the 90's and went back to school. Tim reactivated his career during the early 2000's. Susan quickly joined him after she woke up one morning and told Tim the she was going to learn bass guitar. In 6 months she was playing in a band. She did the same thing with drums. And oh yeah, she sings at the same time, too! Bark was formed to simplify things. But the music isn't simple. It's so good, it's won awards! Bark is Tim and Susan. That's really it. And they have a new album out, aptly titled Loud! We talk about the journey to get from Beat Temptation to Bark and what they're doing differently, if anything, with this new album. Check them out at bark-loud.com to order the album and get their social media links. Follow them and us on Instagram; we're @PerformanceAnx, they're @bark.timlee3. You can support us, too! Message by Tim Lee on Sunday, November 12, 2023
Marine Tim Lee is a legendary evangelist who has been preaching across the nation for decades. Since 1979, he has flown over six million miles to bring a strong message of revival, powerful Biblical challenges to the family, and a sobering message to the staggering moral and social needs so prevalent in our society today. On March 8, 1971, while serving in the United States Marine Corps in South Vietnam Tim gave both of his legs to America. Instead of quitting or becoming bitter, God used this major event in Tim's life to propel him into a ministry that no one could have imagined at that time. He shares how God can turn your pain into purpose. Interview with Tim Lee & Susan Bauer Lee of Bark Bark is a drum set, a Fender 6-string bass, two voices and more hooks than Bill Dance keeps in his tackle box. Loud is their new album. Bark comprises the collaborative duo of Susan Bauer Lee (drums and vocals) and Tim Lee (Fender VI bass and vocals) based in Water Valley, Mississippi. Susan has played and toured with Tim the past two decades with Bark and Tim Lee 3. Tim got his start in Missisippi's The Windbreakers before going on to tour as part of Mitch Easter' Let's Active and seminal college rock band Swimming Pool Q's. Loud is being releasedby Dial Back Sound / Cool Dog Sound on 12” LP vinyl, CD, digital download and stream September 5. “If you can fill the unforgiving three and a half minutes with two hundred and ten seconds of Rock n Roll, yours is the earth and everything that is in it.” I think Rudyard Kipling said that. What do you do when you don't know what to do? In the face of commercial failure, heartbreaking loss, environmental collapse, grief, one too many beers. You make a record . . . and you make it loud. It starts with “Love Minus Action,” and the lyrics “I'm a loser not a fighter.” Lennon couldn't have said it better. But the real story here is that you can't lose if you don't play the game. But what do you do if you don't play the game? You carry on without the baggage of giving a shit about the game. You dance on the graves of the forgotten winners and you play for the regulars. There's a field in North Mississippi. Several years from now. After the screens have all gone dark. The lush green glows in the dull light of a cloudy afternoon. In the middle of the field there is a drum set and two amplifiers. An old generator rattles in the silence. A woman sits at the drum stool and fixes the mic to reach her lips. A man tunes his Bass VI guitar and twists the volume knob all the way up. A ragged crowd gathers from out of the woods. A rumble of distant thunder rolls through the sky. Then the snare cracks and the band plays on. It's Bark, and they're playing us out just before the rain. They're playing Loud; it's the distillation of Rock n Roll—the beat, the riff, the words and the voice. The things that have always been there from “Psychotic Reaction” to “Satisfaction.” Bandcamp: dialbacksound.bandcamp.com bark-bark-loud.bandcamp.com Website: bark-loud.com Facebook: @Bark.Bark.Loud Instagram: @bark.timlee3
Tim began with The Windbreakers in Mississippi in 1982 and has released around 30 albums including solo albums starting in the late '80s plus albums with his wife Susan Bauer Lee (first on bass, then on drums) as The Tim Lee 3 and now Bark. We discuss Bark's "Love Minus Action" from Loud (2023), "Magnolia Plates" by Tim Lee 3 from 33 ⅓ (2015), "Like Sand" from Tim's Crawdad (1998), and the title track from The Windbreakers' Run (1987, with lyrics by Sherry Cothren). We conclude by listening to "Dead Guy Story" from Concrete Dog (2006). Intro: "All That Stuff" by The Windbreakers from Terminal (1985). Learn more at bark-loud.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. A decade ago, there was a lot of hype about self driving cars. In fact, there was more interest in self-driving cars than there was in electric vehicles, in terms of the future of the auto industry. But progress in developing these robotic cars has turned out to be slow, and many tricky challenges still have not been solved. But is the technology finally ready for prime time? On this episode of the Odd Lots podcast, we speak with long-time technology journalist and analyst Tim Lee, the author of the Understanding AI newsletter, about why he believes self-driving cars are here and why they're finally about to make serious commercial inroads.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Although many, including myself, will engage in the fun celebrations, parades, cookouts, fireworks, and more this 4th of July - a lot of people take for granted and forget the sacrifice that Freedom requires. However, thankfully today we have a true American Hero joining us to remind us of his very own words, “America is worth living for, worth fighting for and if need be, worth dying for.” On March 8th, 1971 while serving in the United States Marine Corps in South Vietnam, Tim Lee gave both of his legs to America. However, instead of quitting or becoming bitter God used this major event in Tim's life to propel him into a ministry that no one could have imagined at that time. Now having served 50 years in full-time ministry, where he has ministered in all 50 states and numerous countries addressing thousands of local churches, Christian schools, civic organizations, colleges and universities, hundreds of special patriotic events, as well as thousands of Marines and Marine Recruits every year, God continues to use Tim's heart of passion and patriotism to share and spread the good news of the gospel. Today our prayer is that in and throughout this episode you would be open and receptive to what God has for you. Through the power of Tim's testimony as well as the good news of the gospel which is presented, we pray that your life would be forever impacted and changed because of the sacrifice God gave for you. Additionally, even in the challenging and chaotic times we may find ourselves in as a country, our hope is that you would be reminded of just how blessed we are to live in the Land of The Free because it's the Home of The Brave. The Brutally Honest Music Review returns with Tim Lee from West Pelzer SC Mattman has a cat issue, what does he do?
Gender norms, particularly related to child care, have shifted dramatically over the past few decades. Journalist Tim Lee, whose wife is a doctor and often has to work nights, weekends and unpredictable hours, made the decision to “lean out” of his career to focus more on child care. As their family grew, it became increasingly clear that Lee couldn't spend off hours doing the in-depth research and reporting that he used to do. He now writes for “Full Stack Economics,” a Substack that allows him to work flexible hours. The at-home dad previously wrote for various outlets including The Washington Post and Vox. While leaning out has meant a big pay cut, he's able to do the majority of child care in his household, while also supporting the demands of his wife's better paying career. Lee joins WITHpod to discuss what he learned from other dads who've made the same decision, why he says creating an equal society will require more comfort with unequal marriages, the lack of social stigma he's experienced and more.
Today we speak with Tim Lee, former full-time journalist, now a part-time journalist, and stay-at-home dad! Tim writes about technology, economics, and now parenting as well. You should check out his newsletter here: https://www.fullstackeconomics.com. Tim gives us insights into his experiences on what's worked for him and others and areas to avoid. Highlights include: Comparing part-time and full-time stay-at-home dad gigs. The monetary value of creating or having a job with flexible hours. How to decide if being a stay-at-home dad is right for you? How you can work part-time and not give up your career as a stay-at-home dad. Some keys to communicating about being a stay-at-home dad.
