The Haçienda, often referred to simply as "The Haç," was a legendary nightclub located in Manchester, United Kingdom. It played a pivotal role in shaping the UK's clubbing and music culture, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Here's a quick history of The Hacienda and its significance for those who don't know and a refresh for those that do!1. Founding and Early Years (1982-1986):The Hacienda was founded in 1982 by members of the band New Order (formerly Joy Division) and their label, Factory Records. The club was initially envisioned as a space where Factory artists and friends could enjoy live performances and DJ sets. It was situated in a former yacht showroom on Whitworth Street in Manchester.2. Dance Music and Acid House (Late 1980s):In the late 1980s, The Hacienda underwent a transformation. It embraced the emerging dance music scene and played a crucial role in popularizing the acid house movement in the UK. The club began hosting regular dance nights, bringing in pioneering DJs such as Mike Pickering and Graeme Park. The club's unique blend of electronic music, colorful lights, and innovative design created an atmosphere that attracted a diverse crowd.3. Madchester and Ecstasy Culture (Late 1980s - Early 1990s):During this period, The Hacienda became synonymous with the Madchester scene, a cultural movement that combined alternative rock music, dance, and fashion. The rise of ecstasy (MDMA) culture further fueled the club's popularity, as the drug's euphoric effects aligned with the music and ambiance of the venue.4. Legendary Performances and DJs:The Hacienda hosted iconic performances by artists like The Happy Mondays, 808 State, and A Guy Called Gerald. International DJs, including the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Sasha, also graced its decks. The club's reputation for cutting-edge music, innovative visuals, and avant-garde design drew people from across the UK and beyond.5. Financial Struggles and Closure (Late 1990s):Despite its cultural impact, The Hacienda struggled financially due to mismanagement, high costs, and issues with violence and drug use. In 1997, the club's owners declared bankruptcy, and The Hacienda closed its doors for the last time in 1997. The closure marked the end of an era for the UK club scene.6. Legacy and Influence:The Hacienda's legacy remains imprinted on UK clubbing culture. It helped bridge the gap between alternative rock and dance music, influencing subsequent generations of DJs, producers, and clubbers. The venue's forward-thinking approach to design, music curation, and technology set a standard that many other clubs aspired to emulate. The Hacienda was a trailblazing nightclub that significantly impacted UK clubbing culture. It pioneered the fusion of electronic and alternative music, fostered a sense of unity among diverse audiences, and played a central role in popularizing the ecstasy-fueled dance music movement. Its cultural impact continues to reverberate in the music, design, and nightlife scenes of Manchester and beyond.

Today I interviewed Peter Hook – he of Joy Division, New Order, Manchester's legendary acid house era hotspot The Haçienda, and countless other musical projects – for a national newspaper. You can read that in The Observer in the coming weeks. But I also managed to squeeze in some questions about Hooky's current project the Haçienda Classical, in which he, along with DJs Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, perform iconic sounds from the Factory HQ's heyday, accompanied by a 70-person strong rave orchestra. That led into a wider conversation about the legacy of Joy Division, New Order and the club itself, before ending up with Hooky opening up about the toll New Order's ongoing divorce has had on his mental health. I like Hooky. You don't end up in two of the greatest bands of all time by accident. U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss pledged Wednesday to ride out the turmoil unleashed by her tax-cutting economic agenda, saying the "disruption" will pay off in a wealthier, more efficient Britain. Truss closed a tumultuous Conservative conference in the central English city of Birmingham with a speech intended to revive the spirits of delegates. She told them: "I am ready to make the hard choices" and branded her many critics — including opposition parties, trade unions, environmental protesters and parts of the media — an "anti-growth coalition." Many Tories are in a glum mood after a four-day gathering that saw policy U-turns from the government, dire opinion polls and open rebellion from lawmakers who fear the party is doomed to lose the next national election under Truss, who took office just a month ago after winning a party leadership vote. Truss vowed to stick with her plan to reshape Britain's economy through tax cuts and deregulation in a bid to end years of sluggish growth. She said cutting taxes was "the right thing to do, morally and economically." Truss acknowledged that "these are stormy days" for a country still mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II and rocked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "In these tough times, we need to step up. I am determined to get Britain moving, to get us through the tempest and put us on a stronger footing as a nation," she said, as she vowed to "stand by our Ukrainian friends, however long it takes." Seeking an upbeat tone, Truss took the stage to the strains of the 1990s hit "Moving on Up." The founder of the band behind the song, M People, said he was "livid." Mike Pickering said he hoped Truss looked at the lyrics of the song — "Move right out of here, baby, go on pack your bags." The speech was briefly disrupted by two Greenpeace activists who unfurled a banner reading "Who voted for this?" — and were escorted out of the hall to boos from the audience. Truss shrugged it off. "Whenever there is change, there is disruption," she said. "Not everyone will be in favor. But everyone will benefit from the result — a growing economy and a better future. That is what we have a clear plan to deliver." The pound, which has been on a roller-coaster journey since Truss unveiled her economic proposals last month, fell about 1% to $1.136 after the speech. The currency had hit a record low of $1.03 soon after Truss announced a stimulus package that includes 45 billion pounds ($50 billion) in tax cuts to be paid for by government borrowing on Sept. 23. The Bank of England was forced to intervene to prop up the bond market and stop a wider economic crisis. Under political and financial pressure, the government on Monday scrapped the most unpopular part of its budget package: a tax cut on earnings above 150,000 pounds ($167,000) a year. That will save about 2 billion pounds, a small share of the government's 45 billion-pound tax-cutting plan. Most economists say deep public spending cuts will be needed to pay for the rest. The government says it will publish a fully costed fiscal plan, alongside an independent economic forecast, on Nov. 23. Truss defended the chaotic rollout of her economic measures, saying that in extraordinary times, "it would have been wrong not to have proceeded rapidly with our energy and tax plan." Truss argues that her policies will bring economic growth, higher wages and eventually more tax revenue for the government to spend. Critics say the plans do little to help millions of people who are struggling right now with a cost-of-living crisis fueled by soaring energy prices. Truss insists she is committed to supporting the most vulnerable, pointing to a cap on energy prices that took effect Oct. 1. But she has refused to promise that benefits and state pensions will increase in line with inflation, which has been the practice for years. That has alarmed some Conservative lawmakers, who say it amounts to penalizing the poor while giving tax cuts to the better-off. Several said during the conference that they would not vote for the measure. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, from the Labour Party, said cutting benefits would provoke "a national uprising." Truss said "the status quo is not an option" and she would "stay the course." But uniting her party will be a tough task. As delegates met for panel discussions and wine receptions this week inside a cavernous conference hall, the government descended into factional fighting. Home Secretary Suella Braverman, a Truss ally, accused Conservative lawmakers who disagreed with the leader of staging "a coup." Amid the Tory turmoil, the opposition Labour Party has taken a commanding lead in opinion polls. A national election does not have to be held until 2024, but many Conservatives fear the party is running out of time to close the gap. Polling expert John Curtice said "all of the ingredients for electoral defeat are in place" for the Conservatives. Some delegates left the conference early because of the glum mood, and to avoid a nationwide train strike on Wednesday. Many of those who stayed to listen and applaud Truss said they were impressed. "I really felt her conviction," said Mo Pantall, a businesswoman from Cambridge in eastern England — though she noted there had been some in the hall "who weren't clapping." "They weren't with Liz," Pantall said. "But 90, 95% of us are. We know that unity at this time is what will make us succeed." - JILL LAWLESS, Associated PressSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Governments, transport agencies, and industry have identified the need to reduce waste going to landfill and increase the use of recycled materials to achieve more sustainable development and improve outcomes for communities. The latest update to the Guide to Pavement Technology Part 4E: Recycled Materials covers the advancement in material re-use that has occurred in the 13 years since the 2009 version of the guide was published. There is wide concern around the misuse of recycled materials in road construction, and it is generally agreed that roads should not be viewed as alternative avenues for waste disposal. A protocol has been established that follows a step-by-step process for quantifying the effect of using novel, post-consumer and industrial wastes or recycled materials in asphalt pavements and sprayed seal surfacings. This webinar covers the following key updates made to the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology Part 4E: Recycled Materials: Latest and emerging recycled materials utilised within pavements and information on their use in specific applications as well as associated issues, risks, and considerations. The developed holistic assessment framework for the use of recycled materials in road pavements. The developed protocol for asphalt and sprayed seals that establishes a step-by-step process for quantifying the effect of using novel, post-consumer and industrial wastes or recycled materials. The webinar is presented by Phil Herrington from WSP New Zealand, Brody Clark from WSP Australia with participation of Grant Bosma from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Mike Pickering from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ GRAEME PARK #029 - PART 2 The story of DJ Graeme Park really mirrors the story of the evolution of dance music and club culture itself. Graeme found himself working in a Nottingham record shop called Selectadisc in the early 1980s, when the very first house records began to filter through from Chicago, Detroit and New York. When the shop's owner opened a nightclub, it was only natural he should turn to Graeme to select the discs. Determined to showcase this new style of music, his reputation as a house pioneer soon brought him to the attention of Mike Pickering at The Haçienda in Manchester, who asked him to cover for him while he went on holiday in 1988. Simply put, there was no-one else in the country who could do the job. The Summer of Love followed, and Parky quickly became one of the biggest names on the emerging dance scene. Aside from his nine year residency at The Haç, he was one of the first British DJs to play places like Australia, South America, the USA, Asia and beyond as well as producing and remixing tracks for the dancefloor, including The Brand New Heavies, Inner City, Eric B & Rakim, New Order, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and others. In the past few years Graeme has performed alongside a host of legendary DJs such as Todd Terry, David Morales, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Danny Krivit, Marshall Jefferson and others for a variety of FAC51 The Haçienda club nights playing a selection of contemporary tunes alongside a variety of forgotten classics. Graeme has been a major part of the critically acclaimed Haçienda Classical shows which have performed around the UK since 2016 to rapturous response where he performs live alongside the Manchester Camerata Orchestra, Peter Hook and special guest vocalists to a set of classic club tunes from the 1970s up to the present day. This euphoric show has had rave reviews and gives you the chance to hear classic club tunes like you've never heard them before with a 70 piece orchestra, live percussionists and a choir. Graeme even performs some lead vocals at some shows too. The show opened the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2017 and has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Castlefield Bowl in Manchester, the Isle Of Wight Festival and lots of other arenas and festivals around the UK as well as in Dublin, Dubai and Switzerland. Graeme recently released compilation album “Long Live House Volume 01: 1980s” is a triple CD or double vinyl album of early house cuts from 1985 to 1989 which were all massive tunes for Graeme in the early days of house. Released in December 2018, reaction to the album has been huge and has led to Graeme launching his own Long Live House club nights. Graeme is also producing a forthcoming music documentary called “Embrace The New” which features Marshall Jefferson, Johnny Marr, Shaun Ryder, Peter Hook, Rowetta, Clint Boon, Melanie Williams with others lined up too. Celebrating over 25 years on the radio with shows on Kiss, Galaxy, Key 103, Radio City, Juice FM, Forth One and more, Graeme's years of experience help him understand the specialist skills required by a radio DJ.

029: Graeme Park. Graeme Park is a DJ that defined the sound of house music in the UK through his residency at the legendary Hacienda in Manchester. Honing his selector instincts by working in record shops in his youth, it was when the owner of one such shop bought a club, and twisted his arm to play there as a DJ, that he discovered his passion for entertaining a crowd from behind the decks. A fan of all genres, it was his eclectic sets with a sprinkling of this new sound called house that put him on the radar of Hacienda resident Mike Pickering – who asked Graeme to cover for him whilst he went away on holiday. The gig proved such a success that a partnership between the two was formed, the echoes of which can still be felt across dancefloors to this day. There's music by Todd Terry, David Morales, Roger Sanchez, Graeme Park, K-Klass, Inner City, A Guy Called Gerald and Derrick May plus many more absolute bangers you may recognise; it's a show full of instantly recognisable 80's and 90's House and Garage classics. This first part of the Word Is Love show special covers the most well known classic tracks that defined a Generation and concentrates on the hugely popular 'Nude' nights done by Mike Pickering and Graeme Park on Friday nights throughout the late 80's and early 90's. All tracks are selected and mixed by @thefunkassassin with Love. Back to Love! He took the lead on the club for years with Mike Pickering and together, they made the Acid and House explosion! Let's name a few label where he has some releases:Rush Hour, Soma, Mute, Deconstruction... His current collaboration with Posthuman on I LOVE ACID parties and in a live concept with the duo called "This IS ACID", and what about Sasha who considers JON as his mentor into DJing approach !
