With Jason being a newlywed and Andrew continuing to discover the joys of fatherhood, marriage and family life are at the top of their minds! Today, they talk about the idea of gender roles; how do we balance the ‘traditional roles' that a father and a mother have a natural inclination towards while we transition out of the era of excessively patriarchal homes? We try to discern that with today's discussion–hope you enjoy! Long time no talk! Andrew and Jason are back after a two month hiatus to tackle a big news story that's been happening over the last few months: the Pride Nights that each NHL team has been hosting, and certain players refusing to take part in it. They try to share the teachings of the Church, but also try to answer the question of how to have this conversation with someone who struggles with this topic. They hope this discussion is helpful!
In today's episode, Andrew is a dad!
In today's episode, Andrew shares some reflections on giving thanks for the graces that he and Cherry have received recently. Then he and Jason discuss another thing to be thankful for--being made godparents recently. What does it mean to be a godparent? What does that relationship look like? We'll find out in the years to come, but take a stab at answering those questions today.
We're in the thick of Advent, so you know what that means--25 minutes of Andrew and Jason talking about the themes of preparation and waiting! They reflect on the things they're waiting for: parenthood, marriage. But at the end of the day, how are we all preparing for Jesus's second coming? Andrew and Jason unpack that in today's episode.
On today's episode, Andrew and Jason are back with DA as their guest! It's a bit of a "men's session part 2" as they unpack a few different topics: Friendship with other men, loneliness, and if there might be differences between men and women when it comes to decision-making.
It's been a while, and we've got a lot to catch up on! Andrew and Jason share about how having a community of Catholic friends has impacted their faith journeys. Why is community important? What does accountability mean in the context of Catholic community? And then the other end of the spectrum: What happens to your faith if you become too reliant on community? What if you're a bit more of a lone wolf? It's a packed episode--hope you enjoy!
As we settle into a regular prayer life, it can be easy to substitute "convenient prayer" for "quality prayer". On today's episode, Andrew and Jason reflect a little on times where they've fallen into that trap, and offer some advice on what to do in those situations.
In life, we never really get everything that we want. There will be some kind of curveball thrown, some hoop to be jumped through, some wrench that finds its way into the best laid plans. As Catholics, we're called to turn to God in these situations; to trust in His will, and to seek out His grace. It's easy to say this with words; on today's podcast, Andrew and Jason discuss how to do it in practice.
On today's episode, Jason shares about some recent reflections on how he got to where he is today in his faith life. What were the important pillars that God placed in his life to keep him on the right path (or to bring him back when he strayed)? Andrew shares about his faith and how it was formed and shaped as well--and they hope their experiences spark some reflection for you guys, too! Death. End of life. This is something no one really likes talking about, and so something that we often don't really know how to approach. On this episode, Andrew shares about why this is something he's been reflecting about lately. He and Jason talk about why Catholics can hope in the face of death, and what a "good Catholic death" might look like. How can ordinary deaths be made extraordinary through the grace of God? Ever wondered what it's like being part of a men's session? Andrew and Jason invited their good friend DA to talk about the vocation of marriage from the perspective of the husband and the father. They share about their own experiences and fears for marriage, and then talk about how they might want to raise any sons (God willing) to become men. Hope you enjoy the discussion! If you've browsed the shelves of your local bookstore lately, there's a good chance that you would have seen a section of books on a hot topic these days: Self-Help. What can *you* do to make *yourself* feel better? On today's episode, Andrew and Jason discuss self-help within the context of Catholic and Christian values, and how it's not so much about helping yourself, but letting God help you. In case you missed it, Fr Mike Schmitz made a big announcement a couple weeks ago: He got a tattoo! So Andrew and Jason got their grifting game going and they've come out with an episode about how Catholics might want to approach supposed "grey areas" like tattoos, alcohol, marijuana, and betting. It's Lent, which means it's a season of even more contemplation and reflection than usual. On today's episode, Andrew and Jason try to share some perspective on how to keep our sights on God and Heaven when going through "the stuff of life"--joys, challenges, consolation, and desolation. It's part two of our mini two-episode series on marriage prep! In our last episode, Andrew and Jason talked about spiritual and sexual intimacy. Today, they discuss having children--is there a "right number"? What's the balance between being pro-life and having "quality of life"? Finally, they talk about navigating difficult (often unspeakable!) situations together with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. SEX! Okay, now that they've got your attention... today's episode: marriage prep on the Road from Emmaus! Although they aren't certified marriage prep leaders, Andrew and Jason wanted to share some discussion on what marriage prep would look like if they were to put a mini program together. This is the first episode in a mini two-part series in which they cover spiritual and sexual intimacy. Hope you enjoy!

As Catholics, we often hear of "grace-filled moments" or that "by God's grace", we were able to do something. The word "grace" is used so often that we sometimes don't realize what it actually means in practice. On this episode, Andrew and Jason try to unpack and illustrate what "grace" really looks like. They share some examples that they hope you can relate to and try to make a sometimes-vague concept, well, slightly less vague. Happy new year, and may it be filled with grace! Andrew and Jason end off the year with a bit of a fun episode as they go through their list of pet peeves and pro tips relating to behaviours that we all have in Mass, as well as a couple other general ones. As much as this is a fun episode though, the most important part is at the end, so make sure you stay tuned until then. Merry Christmas, happy new year, stay safe, and be well! On today's episode, Andrew shares about where he's currently at with his prayer life. He's married now, and that vocation for him and Cherry has come with different commitments. Over the last few months, he's been working to adjust to this slightly different lifestyle while still keeping up his prayer habits and relationship with Christ. Together with Jason, they talk about how it's okay to have changes in your prayer life, and how to find new ways to be present to Jesus in every moment. Today, Andrew and Jason tackle the topic of infertility. It's not something we often think of; we grow up planning to get married, to start a family, and to have children, but sometimes, for whatever reason, that last part doesn't happen. It's a difficult cross to bear, and their hearts go out to anyone who does have to bear it. They talk about different approaches that might help, and they also touch on in vitro fertilization and why the Church is against it. Today, Andrew and Jason tackle the topic of infertility. Andrew and Jason are back with another episode on the Eucharist! They talk about how Jesus is present in the Eucharist, and how the bread and wine is truly His body and blood. They go through something called Lewis's Trilemma as well as some instances of Eucharistic miracles. Then they go into the discussion of receiving the Eucharist on our tongue instead of on our hands, and why the traditional way is the way to go. About a month ago, news came out that there had been sexual assaults and gender-based violence at Western University, the alma mater of Jason and Andrew. It was terrible to hear about and difficult to digest, and in this episode, Andrew and Jason try to get to the heart of the issue--the responsibility of being made man, and the gifts that God has written into the very bodies of men that they must be careful and loving stewards of. It's been a growing trend over the last couple years that we've been seeing pronouns being put up next to people's names--at work, at school, wherever. As discussion around gender becomes more and more prevalent within society, we as Catholics need to learn how to approach those conversations. And it's okay if you don't know. It's okay to wonder how you should handle these situations, or how immoral you are or aren't being in your pursuit to love your neighbour. On today's episode, Andrew and Jason try to unpack these questions, and they offer their opinions on how they would approach these conversations. Virtue signalling and humblebragging: the grey area between pride and humility. When we spell it out like that, it might seem black and white. But in our journey towards practicing the virtue of humility, it can be the littlest thing that's said or done the wrong way that could maybe misconstrue our initial intent of being humble, and leave us in a position where the spotlight is left on ourselves instead of on Christ. Andrew and Jason dive into this today in what will probably be their most ironic episode ever, as we try to separate true and false humility. It's the first time Andrew and Jason have done an episode in person in a while, so they're celebrating with a bit more of a fun one this time! THey draft their own teams of saints--saints they relate to, saints they rely on, or just saints that they like. They share what they know about the stories of these saints, as well as what sainthood is about in general. Hope you have fun with this one, and they recommend heading over to YouTube to watch along instead of listening, if you can! One more week. In just a few more days, Andrew and Cherry will be saying "yes" in front of God to spending the rest of their lives together. Is Andrew ready? They invited Gabby Song and Cheryl Chan, two longtime friends of theirs going back to their days at university together, to find out. They ask Andrew to share about his relationship with Cherry, what their discernment process has been like, and otherwise grill him just to make sure he knows what he's doing. They're joined by a special guest halfway through, so make sure you listen to the whole thing ;) One more week. Sometimes when we go to Mass, we might come away underwhelmed by the homily. Or maybe we'll go to Confession and the counselling that we receive isn't exactly the greatest. What should we do when this happens? Is it wrong for us to feel this way? Sometimes, our faith becomes a little too priest-centric, and today, Andrew and Jason talk about what that looks like and how we can remind ourselves what things like Mass and Confession are really about. 215. That's the number of Indigenous children whose remains were found on May 29, 2021. They were found buried on the site of what used to be Kamloops Indian Residential School. Andrew and Jason have gotten to the age where they're starting to think about the next stage of their lives--specifically, married life, family life, and bringing up children. In some ways, it's a funny conversation to have because neither of them are even married (yet), but it's also an important conversation. How can we do our best to be examples of holiness, so that our children can become saints? You can hear what they have to say on that on today's episode.

On Holy Saturday, Andrew was praying with an ancient homily, and he had a revelation of sorts. Andrew and Jason dive into one particular quote within the homily, which was said by Jesus as he brought Adam out of hell. The quote: "Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly Paradise. I will not restore you to that Paradise, but will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you." They talk about the nuts and bolts of how, exactly, Jesus came to defeat and erase the effects of sin. Then they go into what we can do now that Jesus has done the heavy lifting, and how we can participate in salvation by purging our own vices and seeking virtue as we walk through this valley of tears. They talk about the nuts and bolts of how, exactly, Jesus came to defeat and erase the effects of sin. Then they go into what we can do now that Jesus has done the heavy lifting, and how we can participate in salvation by purging our own vices and seeking virtue as we walk through this valley of tears.
"The Source and the Summit". You've probably heard these words before to describe the core of our Catholic faith, but what does it actually mean? Today, Andrew shares about his revelation on how the Eucharist can be mapped as a parallel to the journey that is our interior life. Andrew and Jason dive into what it truly means to receive Jesus's Body and Blood through the Eucharist. There are some important things to hold in our hearts whenever we find ourselves in front of the Eucharist; may we keep these things prayerfully in our hearts! Audrey Assad said a thing a few weeks ago, so Andrew and I start off talking about that. Then we talk about practicing the interior life, and how this is imperative for us to be able to truly be in relationship with God. Without it, the things we do as Catholics can be seen as meaningless. So we try to unpack what the interior life means, using our own journeys and learnings as examples, along with those of the saints. This is being released just before Palm Sunday, so we're praying that you have a blessed Holy Week! Audrey Assad said a thing a few weeks ago, so Andrew and I start off talking about that. In today's episode, Andrew and Jason bring on their first ever guest, Fr. Raphael Ma CR. They tackle a heavier topic with him as they dive into questions about grief and suffering: Why does God allow suffering into this world? What is the teaching of redemptive suffering? How do we approach grief with someone who is or isn't Catholic? Before unpacking these questions, Fr. Raph CR shares his own experiences with grief: from the perspective of someone who regularly ministers to those who grieve, but also as someone who has gone through his own fair share. -- Resources referred to by Fr. Raph CR throughout the episode: 1) Stephanie Gray blog post that illustrates what God does about suffering (and not just "why suffering"): https://loveunleasheslife.com/blog/2016/3/30/the-day-i-was-stumped-by-stephanie-gray 2) Website on grief - https://whatsyourgrief.com/ 3) Another podcast episode on grief (Erin Kinsella works at Newman U of T) https://www.inthethicketpodcast.com/s/stories/s1e4-what-not-to-say In today's episode, Andrew and Jason bring on their first ever guest, Fr. Today, Andrew and Jason just spend an episode catching up with each other on Lent. They talk about how they prepared for Lent (if they prepared at all), and their thought process behind what they're giving up. Lent isn't just about fasting, though, so they also talk about prayer and almsgiving. Finally, Andrew reflects on how he's taken his faith almost a little too seriously lately, and our need sometimes to recenter our faith on finding joy. It's Part 2 of the Road from Emmaus "Why Catholicism?" two-episode mini-series! Last episode, Andrew and Jason tried to answer the questions of "Why do we even believe in religion at all?" And, "Of all the religions in the world, why Christianity?" This time around, they go one level deeper and talk about why they chose Catholicism. They start by sharing their journeys of being cradle Catholics, and then they discuss the importance of Holy Tradition within the Catholic Church. Like the Church, they don't believe in Sola Scriptura, and they talk about that a bit too, and highlight some differences between Protestants and Catholics. They wrap things up by sharing about what they might say to those of us who have friends who've turned away from the Catholic faith. On today's episode, Andrew and Jason dig into the foundations and fundamentals of their faith life. Why are they Catholic? Before they can answer that question though, it's necessary to take a look at a couple of other questions: Why believe in religion at all? And of all the religions in the world, why Christianity? The first part of a two-episode mini-series, they touch on moral relativism, and how Christianity isn't just about being a good person or following a set of rules; it's being in a relationship with God. They also announce some exciting news off the top--you can now find the Road from Emmaus podcast on Fountain of Love and Life! 04:38 - Encountering the Fountain of Love and Life on the Road from Emmaus 09:10 - "Why religion?" and moral relativism 15:25 - Who are we to judge? It's a new year, and there's no better way to start it off than in the same way that the Church starts it off -- celebrating our Holy Mother Mary, Mother of God! There's so much richness and beauty to unpack when it comes to Mary and Marian theology; Andrew and Jason could barely stop talking over each other. Using the Joyful Mysteries to keep them on the right track, they try to dive into the story of Mary, and the reflections they each have on her holy "yes" to God, what it might have been like to be the mother of Jesus, and the pain that she had to carry. Praying that 2021 will get off to a blessed start for you! A big part of being a Christian is understanding that a lot of our faith is relationship-based. God seeks to be in relationship with us, to know us, to be with us. It's a wonderful blessing to be able to recognize that Jesus is our friend. Sometimes, though, we fall into the trap of only thinking of Jesus as a buddy. We forget that He is also a King, that God is our Creator, and that, as much as Jesus walks alongside us, there's kind of still an "order" to the relationship we have with Him. Today, Andrew and Jason try to unpack what it means that Christ is our King. A big part of being a Christian is understanding that a lot of our faith is relationship-based. Andrew and Jason talk about something called the primacy of grace. It's a fancy-sounding term that really just refers to how God, as our loving Father and Creator, seeks us. He yearns to be in relationship with us, and He has already done everything to make that happen. On our end, sometimes we think too much about what we need to do, or where we need to go on our journey of faith, when really, we just need to realize that God is already meeting us where we are. He just needs us to open the door to let Him in. Andrew and Jason talk about something called the primacy of grace. In the last couple weeks, Pope Francis made a few headlines as he talked about civil unions. A lot was said about whether or not the Church had changed her position on same-sex marriage as Catholics and non-Catholics had all kinds of reactions. What exactly did Pope Francis mean when he talked about "civil unions" and a "right to a family" for our homosexual brothers and sisters? What exactly does the Church teach on homosexuality? And how do we navigate these kinds of conversations? Andrew and Jason share about how they unpacked these questions to get some clarity for themselves. -- Articles referenced: Catholic News Agency article (https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/what-did-pope-francis-say-about-civil-unions-a-cna-explainer-57625) Patheos article by Fr. Andrew and Jason share about the last few weeks and how they've been hit by a bit of spiritual dryness. They talk about what consolation and desolation is, and touch on how to navigate them using the rules of discernment. Jason also talks about... becoming a teacher? Sometimes it's easy to fall into the trap of becoming too attached to the things of this world. That might be material possessions like a TV, or it could be your professional career. It could even be the relationships that you have with your loved ones. On this episode, Andrew and Jason talk about how being called to a relationship with Christ means that all these worldly attachments fall away--not because we're forced to give them up, but because we see that there's nothing better to cling onto than Jesus Himself. Andrew and Jason spend this episode talking about this year's GT, an annual Labour Day Weekend retreat that has been going on since 1977. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the retreat was held online for the first time in its 43-year history. Andrew and Jason share about their weekend experience, and about the lessons learned over their years of attending the retreat. In the end, things always work out--according to God's plan!
