Episode Title: Grief Triggers: Understanding and Coping with Unexpected Moments Episode Description: In today's episode, we dive into the topic of grief triggers—those unexpected moments when a memory, a smell, a song, or even a place brings back the pain of loss. Grief triggers are a natural part of the grieving process and can be challenging to navigate. Join us as we explore how to understand and cope with these triggers, allowing ourselves to feel the emotions they bring up. Key Points Discussed: What Are Grief Triggers? Grief triggers are personal and can vary widely. They may include the scent of a loved one's perfume or a significant song. These triggers remind us of the deep connections and love we continue to feel for those we've lost. Acknowledging Your Emotions: It's important to acknowledge grief triggers and allow yourself to feel the emotions they bring up. Avoiding or suppressing these feelings can often intensify them. Coping Strategies: Create a plan for how to handle grief triggers when they arise. Strategies might include deep breathing exercises, reaching out to a supportive friend, or engaging in a comforting activity. Journal Questions: What are some of the most common triggers that bring back memories of your loved one? How do you typically feel when you encounter these triggers? What coping strategies have you found helpful in dealing with grief triggers? Can you identify any patterns or specific times when these triggers are more likely to occur? How can you create a plan to manage your emotions when a trigger catches you off guard? Conclusion: Take your time reflecting on these questions. Remember, your grief is valid, and so are your emotions. By understanding and acknowledging your grief triggers, you can better navigate the waves of emotion that come with them.   Follow Us: Website: https://www.healingstartswiththeheart.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/healingstartswiththeheart Instagram: healatthegriefschool Contact Us: Email: sharon@sharonbrubaker.com Thank you for joining us in this episode. In this episode of "Free Outside," I, Jeff Garmire, sit down with Shelby Farrell, an incredible trail runner and FKT (Fastest Known Time) record holder. We dive into Shelby's impressive list of FKTs, including the Joshua Tree Traverse, the Backbone Trail, and an incredible attempt at the Long Trail Record. Shelby opens up about her journey into trail and ultra running, living the van life with her cats, and her meticulous approach to training and planning for FKT attempts. Shelby shares her experiences on the Long Trail FKT attempt, detailing the hurdles she faced, the unwavering support from her crew, and the unexpected moments that made the journey memorable. From enjoying different hot drinks at shelters to dealing with a panic attack and vomiting episode, she recounts the highs and lows of her Long Trail adventure. Additionally, we discuss the unique challenges that come with FKT attempts, such as unpredictable weather and battling sleep deprivation. I also talk about the filming of Shelby's journey and the exciting upcoming documentary on the Long Trail. Shelby and I share our thoughts on the fun aspect of costumes in trail running and the crucial role of community support in our sport. Tune in for an inspiring and candid conversation filled with insights and behind-the-scenes stories from the world of FKTs and ultra running. Takeaways Shelby Farrell is an accomplished trail runner and FKT record holder, known for her FKTs on the Joshua Tree Traverse, the Backbone Trail, and the Long Trail. Shelby got into trail running after running her first marathon and discovering her competitive drive. She gradually progressed to longer distances and eventually FKT attempts. Living in a van with cats allows Shelby the freedom to pursue her passion for trail running and explore different trails and FKT challenges. Planning and preparation are crucial for successful FKT attempts. Shelby utilizes spreadsheets, maps, and communication tools to coordinate with her support crew and stay on track. Weather and sleep deprivation can pose significant challenges during FKT attempts. Shelby has learned the importance of being adaptable and making smart decisions to ensure safety and success. The Long Trail is a challenging trail that requires mental and physical strength to complete. Having a supportive crew and pacers can make a big difference in a long-distance trail run. Unexpected moments and challenges can arise during a trail run, and it's important to adapt and overcome them. Filming a trail run adds an extra layer of complexity, but it can capture the community and camaraderie of the sport. Costumes and personal touches can add fun and excitement to trail running events. Building and supporting trail running communities is important for the preservation and maintenance of trails. Sound Bites "I have some exciting news to announce, but I'm not going to announce it yet." "Shelby has the Joshua Tree Traverse FKT Out and Back Backbone Trail One Way, which, crazy trail, and the Backbone Trail One Way." So we'll get to do this again and other cool things again." "I just got so nauseous. Like knew I was going to throw up, but I'm, I just ran 250 miles and I'm like, bundled up in this blanket." forbigående skritt resolutt på de glatte fortauene.En: The crowd had already begun to fill the streets around Slottsplassen, passing briskly on the slippery sidewalks.Nb: Mennesker, pustende ut små the cold, pretended to read the newspaper while waiting for her morning coffee.Nb: En kopp med varm, nytraktet kaffe ble til slutt plassert foran henne, dampen steg opp og blandet seg med den kalde Oslo-luften.En: A cup of hot, freshly brewed coffee was eventually placed in front of her, steam rising and mingling with the cold Oslo air.Nb: Ingrid holdt koppen for å føle dens varme mot håndflatene, en etterlengtet lettelse fra vinterkulden.En: Ingrid held the cup to feel its warmth against her palms, a welcome relief from the winter chill.Nb: Innen blokken, var Lars halvveis til A little nervous but friendly, Lars wanted to greet Ingrid on his way.Nb: Men som mange har opplevd, er det ikke alltid ting går som planlagt.En: But as many have experienced, things don't always go as planned.Nb: Oslo om vinteren er kjent for sine isete fortau.En: Oslo in winter is known for its icy sidewalks.Nb: Uten å merke det, tråkket Lars rett på en isflekk og med et skli, falt han uventet i rett ved bordet til Ingrid.En: Without realizing it, Lars stepped right onto a patch of ice and with a slide, he unexpectedly fell right by Ingrid's table.Nb: Uventet av den plutselige hendelsen, caught off guard.Nb: Rød av forlegenhet, men overveiende bekymret for Ingrid, reiste Lars seg opp febrilsk, gled over issmeltevannet og mumlet unnskyldninger til Ingrid.En: Blushing with embarrassment but mostly concerned for Ingrid, Lars scrambled to his feet, slid across the melted ice, and mumbled apologies to Ingrid.Nb: Ingrid, uventet rolig, prøvde å tørke av kaffen som lekket ned skjørtet hennes.En: Ingrid, unexpectedly calm, tried to wipe the coffee dripping down her skirt.Nb: Hun så opp på Lars med et rolig smil og fortalte han at hun var greit.En: She looked up at Lars with a gentle smile and told him she was okay.Nb: De neste ukene ble Lars kvitt skyldfølelsen ved å invitere Ingrid på kaffe hver morgen før arbeid.En: In the following weeks, Lars relieved his guilt by inviting Ingrid for coffee every morning before work.Nb: De ble kjente til hverandre over koppen med kaffe og dype samtaler.En: They got to know each other over cups of coffee and deep conversations.Nb: Og med tiden førte det lille uhellet på en isete morgen til et vakkert vennskap mellom Lars og Ingrid i den kalde, men vakre byen Oslo.En: And over time, the little accident on an icy morning led to a beautiful friendship between Lars and Ingrid in the cold but beautiful city of Oslo.Nb: Dermed ender vår lille novelle med en viktig leksjon: Noen ganger kan en liten feil føre til flotte ting i livet.En: Thus, our little novella ends with an important lesson: Sometimes, a small mistake can lead to wonderful things in life.Nb: Og kanskje, det er hva livet handler om - å omfavne de små uventede øyeblikkene.En: And perhaps, that's what life is about - embracing the small unexpected moments. CONTENT WARNING: Please note that this episode contains depictions and stories of siblings lost by suicide, homicide and/or domestic violence. We understand that some people may find these triggering, activating and/or disturbing. Meet Jordon Ferber, a surviving sibling who's traversed the labyrinth of loss through a mix of tender reflection, candid conversations, and a dash of humor. Jordon recounts the larger-than-life story of his younger brother Russell - an inspiring young man who managed to charm the New York Knicks at the tender age of 13. Jordon shares the story of Russell's exciting life throughout the celebrity chef world and is burning passion that kept him succeeding.    In this episode, Jordon and I unpack the surreal moments at the morgue, the unexpected triggers that bring memories flooding back, and our unique paths through the darkest times. From scattering ashes in favorite places, to getting tattoos in remembrance, we find solace and sometimes even humor in the rituals of grief. We also confront societal norms around male grief, challenging the damaging stereotype of men 'rubbing dirt in it and getting back out there'. Jordon also shares his experiences with Compassionate Friends, a peer support network that played a crucial role in his grief journey. Join us for this touching, inspiring, and even occasionally humorous exploration of sibling loss.   In the episode we're covering: (0:13:45) - Surviving Siblings Bond and Share Memories (0:25:51) - Coping With Tragic News and Loss (0:29:45) - Grief, Family, and Unexpected Moments (0:38:27) - Grieving and Finding Humor in Mourning (0:55:37) - Compassionate Friends in Grief Journey (1:11:29) - Breaking Societal Stereotypes of Male Grief   This Episode is sponsored by The Surviving Siblings Guide. ✨Get The Surviving Siblings Guide HERE  For full episode show notes and transcript, click here   Connect with Jordon: Jordon's Instagram: @beatniknudnik Facebook: Where's The Grief  Instagram: @wheresthegrief Twitter: @wheresthegrief Facebook: Russell Ferber Foundation Instagram: @RussellFerberFoundation    Connect with Maya: Podcast Instagram: @survivingsiblingpodcast Maya's Instagram: @mayaroffler TikTok: @survivingsiblingspodcast Twitter: @survivingsibpod Website: Thesurvivingsiblings.com Facebook Group: The Surviving Siblings Podcast YouTube: The Surviving Siblings Podcast Patreon: The Surviving Siblings Podcast

I had the amazing opportunity to interview Daisy Paige. This woman is a fighter and brings some major awareness to MSA.  Hear her incredible episode and drop her an email with a note of special encouragement.    Daisy Paige: I am the author of Unexpected Moments with a foreword by Kirk Cameron that shares my life story. I have been happily married to someone I've known since kindergarten for thirteen years. I was diagnosed with a rare terminal neurological disorder known as MSA or multiple system atrophy and only 4 out of 100,000 people are diagnosed with it in the US. I want to inspire others to know they're not alone no matter what they are going through. God will never put you through more than you can handle if you have faith. There were times when I didn't want to or almost didn't want it but it was by the Grace of God that I did. I am also looking to create awareness for MSA and 10% of my proceeds go to the charity researching a cure for it.  Daisy Paige  daisy.paige.unexpected.moments@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100079216211002&mibextid=b06tZ0, Instagram @ daisypaige322 Twitter @ daisypaige322
