Can Labour's prized plans to decarbonize power generation by 2050 withstand growing demands for extra defence spending – an acrimonious argument that has already claimed two senior defence ministers? Or pressure to preserve and extend welfare benefits from the party's left and the unions, many of whom see net zero as a job killer? Plus: China's colossal subsidization of green technology has created a surplus of cheap equipment for clean power. Would Britain be wise to take advantage? Show NotesWe start by dipping into the book with 50 arguments for God and a chapter “Jesus as God” which says that if we ditch 4th & 5thC debates and modern categories of Trinity, we see Jesus expressing his divinity in his own way. It explains Jesus' caged language on this as Jesus needing to avoid being stoned for blasphemy. We look at some of the key passages in the gospels, in particular looking for differences between the author's view and Jesus' proclamations regarding whether he was God. This leads on to the Liar Lunatic Lord argument made famous by CS Lewis, and the sceptics' 4th option “Legend”. We look at the “Liar” option. The Big Unlock · Matthew Blosl, Chief Executive Officer, DexCare In this episode, Matthew Blosl, CEO of DexCare, discusses how he helps high-growth healthcare technology companies navigate critical inflection points by pairing disciplined focus with a culture that embraces failure as a path to innovation. He describes DexCare's journey from a Providence Health incubated initiative to a scaled care orchestration platform that helps health systems address a “trilemma” of rising patient demand, clinician shortages, and margin pressure. Matt explains DexCare's co-innovation model, where every health system becomes an innovation partner rather than a one-size-fits-all implementation, enabled by modern data and AI capabilities. He outlines a pragmatic AI roadmap: first improving internal operations, then enhancing existing products, and finally accelerating true product innovation, while warning that AI can easily drive teams off-mission without strong focus. Matt also points out how fast things are shifting in healthcare and encourages leaders to rethink how they run their organizations and come together more often to tackle the challenges ahead. In this interview, Heidrick & Struggles' Scott Bae speaks to Dr. Roawen Chen, the chief supply chain and operations officer of Qualcomm Technologies. Dr. Chen first defines the concept of a “fab” [fabrication facility] versus “fabless” semiconductor company, and explains how the management of the supply chain is nuanced between the two. He then shares what he calls the “semiconductor trilemma”—how leaders have to balance three competing KPIs: pursuing the most advanced technology, having the lowest cost, and having unlimited supply—and discusses the leadership capabilities he believes are critical to manage that trilemma. Throughout the conversation, he also offers his advice for leaders who are managing the current uncertain and volatile market dynamics as it pertains to the chip space, how he has seen the role of the supply chain and operations leader evolve, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic, and how he approaches the balance between developing talent internally and recruiting talent externally, particularly when conditions are changing so rapidly. We discuss the trilemma facing the energy and commodities markets - between security, affordability, and sustainability, what now matters in policy and investment decisions? In the previous US administration and in Europe, sustainability was a key policy driver. Under the new Trump administration, and indeed globally since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, security has come to the forefront. How should organizations think about these three facets? How is the world changing and what does that mean for the energy and commodities sector? Our guest is Clay Seigle, Senior Fellow in the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Clay holds the James R. Schlesinger chair in Energy and Geopolitics and is an experienced energy industry analyst with specialization in market intelligence and political risk. Clay provides policymakers and corporate leaders with thought leadership and strategic insights to navigate regional and global energy security challenges.
(00:00:00) The Atheist Experience 29.21 with Secular Rarity and Scott Dickie 2025-05-25 (00:10:43) Hannah - MS | Materialism And Physicalism (00:43:43) Watcher 215 - PA | Love Is The Fruit Of The Holy Spirit (01:03:18) Paul - AZ | Foundherentism And Munchhausen's Trilemma (01:25:50) James - (CA) | Proof Of Evolution? (01:45:04) Ulrich - (MX) | Church Is Evidence For God Hannah calls in from Mississippi to talk about materialism and physicalism. The hosts say that they mostly subscribe to methodological and practical materialism. Hannah argues that the hard problem of consciousness undermines materialism. She says that materialism denies the existence of consciousness as a nonmaterial thing. The hosts point out that it's only a problem if you presuppose that consciousness is immaterial. Hannah believes that consciousness is immaterial because you can't observe consciousness. She shifts the burden of proof by saying that she would need to see a falsifiable experiment that shows the material nature of consciousness. It isn't our responsibility to prove a counterexample to a claim without evidence.Watcher 215 from Pennsylvania calls in to talk about his relationship with the holy spirit as evidence for god. The hosts explain that believers in other religions use the same evidence as proof of their gods, so it isn't convincing. Watcher says that if other people got the same benefits as him from other religions, he would have to seriously investigate those religions. What if people also get the same experience from leaving religion? If you want people to believe in a specific god, you need to narrow down the evidence to show that religion/god is the correct one. Watcher uses circular reasoning and says that he knows that love is the fruit of the holy spirit, and he knows that by believing the word of the bible. Paul from Arizona calls to talk about the hosts' ground for knowledge. What is the ontology behind the hosts epistemology for the grounding of knowledge about their atheist worldview? Paul and the hosts discuss Foundherentism (a blending of coherentism and foundationalism), Munchhausen's trilemma, and theories about infinite regress. The hosts say that there can't be an infinite future without the possibility of an infinite past as well. Paul thinks that there needs to be a start to something, so there can't be an infinite past because it would eventually run into a starting point. But why does there need to be a start?James in Canada starts with the premise that all we know is that we are here and we don't know how we got here. The hosts can agree that they are here and it's not 100% known how we got here. James says that there is no proof, but the hosts can't totally agree to that. There is solid proof about evolution and the genetic code, etc. James points out that evolution is a theory and describes a theory as an idea that may be true but isn't proven. However, in scientific communities, it has a different meaning. A scientific theory is pretty much a fact. When asked, James says that you can't have evidence of god, but he also believes that we shouldn't believe evolution if there was no evidence for it. If we're held to that standard, why isn't religion as well?Ulrich from Mexico claims that the existence of churches proves that God is real. The bible says that there will be churches for God, so the fact that there are churches means the bible is true. He says that no other holy books have fulfilled prophecies. When asked for an example of a fulfilled biblical prophecy, he brings up a prophecy of Jews returning to Jerusalem before the end of days. Does he think the end times are happening right now? He says maybe. When arguing his case, Ulrich couldn't engage in an honest conversation, so he got hung up on.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-atheist-experience--3254896/support.

The European Union's energy landscape is transforming rapidly, as the bloc works to reduce emissions, lower energy prices, and decrease dependence on Russian fuel—three goals proving to be a challenge. Though renewables now generate nearly half of Europe's electricity, significant challenges remain. Lengthy permitting processes are stalling the deployment of new clean generation and infrastructure and the continent requires improvements in energy system interconnections between countries. And questions remain about the role of certain forms of energy, like nuclear power and hydrogen, in Europe's future energy mix. So how is Europe addressing these competing priorities? And what do certain trade-offs mean for energy affordability, security, and economic competitiveness? This week host Jason Bordoff talks with Dan Jørgensen, the new European commissioner for energy and housing. Commissioner Jørgensen previously served as Danish minister for development cooperation and minister for global climate policy. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Denmark and was a member of the Danish parliament from 2015 to 2024. Credits: Hosted by Jason Bordoff and Bill Loveless. Every “trustworthy” AI system quietly betrays at least one sacred principle. Ethical AI forces brutal trade-offs: Prioritizing any one aspect among fairness, accuracy, and transparency compromises the others. It's a messy game of Jenga: pull one block (like fairness), and accuracy wobbles; stabilize transparency, and performance tumbles. But why can't you be fair, accurate, AND transparent? And is there a solution? The Trilemma in Action Imagine you try to create ethical hiring algorithms. Prioritize diversity and you might ghost the best candidates. Obsess over qualifications and historical biases sneak in like uninvited guests. Same with chatbots. Force explanations and they'll robot-splain every comma. Let them “think” freely? You'll get confident lies about Elvis running a B&B on a Mars colony. Why Regulators Won't Save Us Should we set up laws that dictate universal error thresholds or fairness metrics? Regulators wisely steer clear of rigid one-size-fits-all rules. Smart move. They acknowledge AI's messy reality where a 3% mistake margin might be catastrophic for autonomous surgery bots but trivial for movie recommendation engines. The Path Forward? Some companies now use “ethical debt” trackers, logging trade-offs as rigorously as technical debt. They document their compromises openly, like a chef publishing rejected recipe variations alongside their final dish. Truth is: the real AI dilemma is that no AI system maximizes fairness, accuracy, and transparency simultaneously. So, what could we imagine? Letting users pick their poison with trade-off menus: “Click here for maximum fairness (slower, dumber AI)” or “Turbo mode (minor discrimination included)”? Or how about launching bias bounties: pay hackers to hunt unfairness and turn ethics into an extreme sport? Obviously, it's complicated. The Bullet-Proof System Sorry, there's no bullet-proof system since value conflicts will always demand context-specific sacrifices. After all, ethics isn't about avoiding hard choices, it's about admitting we're all balancing on a tightrope—and inviting everyone to see the safety net we've woven below. Should We Hold Machines to Higher Standards Than Humans? Trustworthy AI isn't achieved through perfect systems, but through processes that make our compromises legible, contestable, and revisable. After all, humans aren't fair, accurate, and transparent either.

Special Guest Host Cale Clarke explores C.S. Lewis's powerful trilemma argument, considering whether Jesus could be a liar, lunatic, or Lord. He even expands this to account for the notion of Jesus as a legend. He also reflects on the prophetic themes in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" and its relevance today. The intersection of faith, history, and modern moral dilemmas makes for a fascinating discussion. Mary - Kids can decide to have Trans surgeries but they can't walk to the store by themselves? (5:25) Though we are not talking about East of Eden today (but...stay tuned for that episode up next!), we're covering Logicomix, a graphic novel by Apostolos Doxiadis and Christos Papadimitriou. (8:16) We give an overview of the book and how it shares different intricacies and stories from Bertrand Russell's life. From his parents being in a throuple to schizophrenia running in his family, we try to decipher which parts were real vs. fabricated. (10:36) Why you shouldn't necessarily look for precision and formal rules about how the world works. We tie this idea into Taoism which we've seen commonly in a few of our other recent reads. In short, no system can fully explain itself. You need to step outside of it. (13:42) Is it possible to build a perfect map of everything that mathematics entails? We talk about the connection between logic, philosophy, and mathematics. (20:25) There were several mathematicians in the book. How many of them are you familiar with? (23:36) Russell's involvement in a variety of historical events from the Cuban Missile Crisis to JFK's assassination, as he was not convinced that Oswald was guilty of the crime. (28:34) If you've been up-to-date with the news lately, you may be just as interested in the Kate Middleton conspiracies as we are. Tangent time! (31:38) Russell was sat in the House of Lords, a chamber of UK Parliament which is generally not up for election. Plus, we brainstorm some ideas of who would be considered Bertrand Russell's equivalent in the US. (36:48) We dive in to some different historical events and wars. The Ottoman Empire, World War 1 and 2, the Persian Gulf War, and how warfare and aircraft carriers changed during these ages. (41:26) Aviation and its rapid improvements in technology in such a short span of time. (45:07) "Shouldn't we get back to the book?" Nat, Neil, and Adil discuss some of the main concepts from the book, including the pursuit of truth in the world of mathematics. You're never going to fully understand reality, but for some, that's a hard truth that they don't want to accept. (49:44) What does it mean to know, and how can you be justified in knowing something? Remember, a belief can be true while at the same time not satisfying the conditions of logic. (56:05) Unlike the other mathematicians discussed in the book, Gödel constructed a proof to his theorem that hasn't yet been disproven. Regardless of whether their desires for absolute truth was achieved or not, a lot of the findings are fundamentally useful in many other ways. (1:00:34) We talk about some of the books that we have coming up on the podcast, and throw around some ideas. Which book would you like to see us do an episode on? Let us know here! (1:05:04) Is it true that the more you think about how you're feeling, the worse you feel? (1:10:07) Nat, Neil, and Adil share some more of their upcoming reads they're excited about, and different war books, including Martin Gilbert's books on WW1 and WW2. (1:13:24) Political ETFs that you can buy into. $NANC and $KRUZ, anyone? (1:17:22) That concludes this episode! The Trilemma of the Criterion is a philosophical problem that challenges how we can establish knowledge or truth. It suggests that when trying to determine what is true or justified, we face three main options, but each option comes with its own set of issues.
Bob Burnett is the Chairman and CEO of Barefoot Mining. In this interview, we discuss his transition from the PC industry to Bitcoin and his passion for Bitcoin mining. Bob explains the complexities of mining, its potential future and the role of fees in sustaining the industry. We also talk about the scarcity of block space in the Bitcoin network, the importance of the Lightning Network, the early years of Bitcoin and the public's current perception of Bitcoin. - - - - Bob Burnett shared his fascinating journey, from his work on developing one of the world's first laptop computers to his current involvement in the Bitcoin industry. Bob drew parallels between the personal computer and Bitcoin, emphasizing the role of technologists like Satoshi Nakamoto in pushing society forward and ushering in new eras, and the different motivations of technologists and capitalists. Bob initially designed Ethereum mining servers but eventually pivoted towards Bitcoin due to his dissatisfaction with Ethereum. He expressed his admiration for the technological brilliance of Bitcoin and the ongoing process of uncovering its layers. Bob shared his passion for Bitcoin mining, and his mission as a technologist and systems “guy” who wants to contribute to building a monetary system that will last for a thousand years. We discussed the intricacies of the Bitcoin mining industry. Bob explained the mining trilemma, i.e. the challenge of combining the three fundamental factors that need to come together to build a mining site: a consistent and competitive source of energy, mining equipment, and money. We also discussed the impact of changes to Bitcoin's price on the mining industry, the importance of collaboration, the need for diversity and the dangers of monopolies. The podcast delved into the scarcity of block space in the Bitcoin network and its implications. Current block space is limited and cannot accommodate everyone who wants to transact on the base layer. This poses a challenge for individuals who want to store their Bitcoin securely and be self-sovereign. We covered the importance of Lightning Network as a solution to allow more people to access and use Bitcoin. Finally, we reflected on the early years of Bitcoin and the upcoming changes in fees. We also talked about the perception of Bitcoin among those who are unfamiliar with it, and the challenge of bridging the gap between what people think about Bitcoin and the reality. However, in terms of the famous saying “show, don't tell”, it's the efforts of people like Bob, working to serve people around the world, that will go a long way to enlightening people on the value of Bitcoin. - Show notes: https://www.whatbitcoindid.com/podcast/the-bitcoin-mining-trilemma This episode's sponsors: Iris Energy - Bitcoin Mining.
