Virtue Signalling is a political phenomenon that we observe all the time but rarely stop to reflect on its nature. Virtue Signalling is what we do when we join marches, political parties or trends, not because we understand what we are doing but to show the world how good we are. We don't know who we're marching for or what we're shouting about, but we're happy to march and shout because it shows that we're admirable and generous people. Better than others. We are not sincere when we act, but we are very pious when we talk. This, of course, leads to self-deception and the division and destruction of any family, community, or nation. It closes our eyes to the truth and drives us to hate those who might take away our glory in being better. When companies, schools, and governments begin engaging in virtue signalling, the consequences are catastrophic. In todays day and age with the increase in social media use, we are noticing a shift in our ability as a society to critically think and deduce false information from what is real. In this conversation, Mitch and Mills discuss: — Thinking for yourself — Divide in perspectives — Societys lack of critical thinking skills — Right versus wrong — Asking critical questions and doing research — Taking what people say for face value This chat encourages everyone to take their power back with decision making and invites us all to re-think the way to respond to situations that can cause a divide, in everyday life. Piers is joined by Nerdrotic & The Critical Drinker to react to Sunday night's Oscars. The showdown between Oppenheimer and Barbie sparked debates about the state of Hollywood and the changing landscape of the film industry. While some praised Oppenheimer for its craftsmanship and performances, others criticized it for being too long and self-indulgent. Today's conversation is a solo podcast, but not a Q&A. It's 13 Thoughts after turning 31 Years Old. A popular style of post from my Instagram and a longer form email I shared with my list over the years, I decided to turn it into a podcast last year with 30 Thoughts for episode 156. This time round, I've flipped the numbers to 13 but I want to really explain each of the 13 thoughts. You can expect to hear about optimisation versus perfection, becoming more interesting, time management, and even discomfort and change. In the information age and the advent of cancel culture, public morality has taken an interesting turn. Virtue is signalled by what we approve publicly or cancel publicly. The deep irony is that this virtue signalling is most often not backed by _true_ virtue. This is seen in the fierce and cutting remarks too common on social media. The danger for Christians is that they follow the culture and become no better than whitewashed tombs. At this cultural moment, it's all the more pertinent for Christians to cultivate true virtue. The Bible often encourages believers that their character is to match their calling. In this special edition of our podcast, we bring you the audio from our recent live event from our 2023 series on “A virtuous life”. In this episode, we hear from Professor David VanDrunen about “Virtue in an age of virtue signalling: Christian culture in a characterless society”. Calum, Kirsty and Frankie discuss the politics and policy of Rishi Sunak's plan to "stop the boats." What's behind the rhetoric, what's behind the policy? Why do the public care so much - are they right to care? Moreover, we assess how this plays into the electoral strategy of both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer. Frankie guides us through some of the difficulties in the plan, based on her experience working with people coming to the UK. Plus we're joined by special guest, former Special Adviser Peter Cardwell. Peter is political editor of TalkRadio, former special adviser to four cabinet ministers and author of The Secret Life of Special Advisers. He dissects for us how this issues plays politically and why it's important. Kirsty discusses whether or not the policy will ever have any real world outcome on anything - or whether legal challenges will keep it as grounded as a deportation flight bound for Rwanda. And Gary Lineker gets described as "the right's most useful idiot..." Support the podcast by becoming a member at: https://plus.acast.com/s/whitehallsources. Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we explore many ideas. We dive deep into outcome independence and how one can develop the ability to focus on what one can control. We went on to discuss mimetic desire, a phenomenon that holds together and dictates the majority of our behavior, knowingly and unknowingly. We discussed how one can use mimetic desire to their advantage, and how when used well it can lead to originality and innovation. We went on to speak about conformity vs deviation. Asking questions such as; How do you personally tell apart the truth from a meta-truth? And what does the alignment between a truth and a meta-truth look like? We discuss how one develops broad interdisciplinary thinking and a collection of meta-truths and truths for effective synthesis. The value of opaque heuristics (including creating one's own heuristics) to simplify life. We speak about the importance of being broad (range). We touched on signaling as well, and how can we signal authenticity, and escape the trap of projecting the appearance of virtue and actually develop the virtue. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode, as much as we enjoyed having it.

I like people who put it simply. Hancock Prospecting said it is unnecessary for sports organisations to be used as the vehicle for social and political purposes. Hancock Prospecting was, the emphasis on was, the sponsor of Netball Australia. It was a $15 million deal that got pulled by the head of the company, Gina Rinehart. As we explained last week, sport these days is less about sport and more about virtue signalling. That is exactly the term Rinehart used over the mess some of the players have created for their sport. They were fretting about comments Rinehart's father made 40 years ago. One player wanted an exemption not to wear the sponsor on the team uniform. And so, it has led to this. A sport that was in financial trouble, now $15 million out of pocket and lord knows who would touch them. The irony being that's what the virtue signallers never quite seem to get. The simple fact that so much of this modern-day whinging actually has outworkings for more than just themselves. If, for example, those who so vehemently opposed the Rinehart money were happy to lose their place in the side and therefore their income as professional athletes, that doesn't mean the rest of the team were. But that doesn't seem to matter to those who make the most noise. And the most noise for what? Does the Rinehart business top? Does Australia stop producing fossil fuels? Does the world stop demanding fossil fuels? Do the Europeans decide not to heat their homes this winter? Nothing changes except for the sport, the players in the sport, and the reputation of the sport. Like all relationships in life, there is a balance to be struck. The balance for netball was an income stream at a very difficult time. In this particular circumstance, netball needed Hancock more than Hancock needed netball. But netball abused the balance, hopped on board a horse a mile too high, and are paying the price because of it. Like so many themes that evolve, virtue signalling being one of the latest, the proponents almost always take it too far. That's before the pushback begins and the pushback has most certainly begun, with this example clocking in at $15 million. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's episode, we consider last week's "Day of Truth and Reconciliation," what this day really means, the ideology upon which it is based, and what that means for the way in which we participate in it. Fellow decoders: a few weeks ago Chris and Matt were invited to virtually attend a lecture at Macquarie University that promised to be of interest for the podcast. And that lecture was presented by the philosophy professor Neil Levy on the intriguing topic of 'Intellectual Virtue Signalling'. That is the status-seeking advertising of what is commonly perceived as intellectual virtues. We found Neil's thesis extremely compelling, with clear applications to a lot of the stuff we observe week on and week out on DTG. So, naturally, we swallowed our pride and our eternal disdain for philosophy and begged Neil to grace our humble show with his presence. Neil kindly agreed and we proceeded to have an enjoyable conversation with our patented meandering waffle juxtaposed against Neil's careful philosophizing. Before the interview, we also spend a little bit of time spelling out our policy on being abusive to the gurus. Here it is in summary: Don't do it! Robust criticism, ok. Personal abuse/doxing, is not ok. Got it? Good! Prof. Levy holds a dual position at the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University. He publishes not only in practical ethics and moral philosophy but also across diverse topics in cognition, addiction, and pathology. Neil has also written a number of books, most recently: https://academic.oup.com/book/38980 (Bad Beliefs: Why they happen to good people (2021)) https://global.oup.com/academic/product/consciousness-and-moral-responsibility-9780198704638?cc=au&lang=en& (Consciousness and Moral Responsibility (2014)) 'Bad Beliefs' is directly related to the podcast, and is available freely online! We heartily recommend this interview, and might even go so far as to say Neil has helpfully provided us with a bit of conceptual framework that undergirds some high-level stuff that's happening within and across the quantum circuits of the Gurometer. Thanks for that Neil!

Former Army officer and West Point graduate Joachim Hagopian joins me for a detailed, sweeping, and frequently eye-opening discussion of what's REALLY going on in Ukraine, and why Russia supposedly "invaded." The media portrays it as an arbitrary invasion motivated by greed and bloodlust, but what if nothing could be further from the truth? What if the Western Powers are actually covertly using Ukraine to fight a proxy war for them? Are we on the brink of a WW3 - or has it already started? What does the Biden Crime Family have to do with Ukraine? Why did every Big Tech platform switch from "covid mode" into "I stand with Ukraine mode" in unison overnight? Is Ukraine a major nexus of child, drug, and weapons trafficking? Is Vladimir Putin trying to eradicate the last remaining Nazi strongholds in Ukraine - while also fending off the "Illuminati" Elite's attack on Russia? There is clearly MUCH more going on in Ukraine than the controlled media is letting on. Hagopian blows the lid off the whole charade. Special Guest: Joachim Hagopian.

I met acclaimed philosopher Julian Baggini in Bristol for a coffee upon first arriving in the city, and it was a pleasure. Julian is a member of the Bristol Humanist Society, where I'll be doing a talk about journalist from a humanist perspective on the first of November…so it was great to chat about all things philosophical, and I thought wow, he'd make for a really wonderful podcast guest. He didn't disappoint. Sign up for the bonus questions on http://patreon.com/andrewgold or on Apple VIP.
