We live in an era deeply shaped by secularism. Because secular ideas are at the heart of our culture, modern people tend to think in secular ways without realizing it—even the most well-meaning of us. How then do we live in, but not be of, a secular culture? We need to understand the enchanted, Sacramental way that the early Christians viewed the world, but we also need to understand secularism. To truly understand Christianity, we must unlearn an entire secular worldview and become participants in a sacramental worldview instead—a worldview that embraces reality as it truly is. How do you explain the Sacramental life of the Church? To the early Christians—and to all ancient people—the idea that physical objects had spiritual power was very intuitive, whereas modern people tend to find this idea difficult, bizarre or even un-Christian. Join Hank Hanegraaff and his guest Zac Porcu for a discussion on these topics. Topics discussed include:  What is Christianity? (4:00); what are the mysteries of the Church? (6:30); what is religion? (10:15); Arche—a foreign unfamiliar word for God (12:15); the Trinity—why do we care about the Trinity? (15:30); what does it mean for God to be the ultimate reality? (17:30); what is the most important thing about Jesus? (19:20); what is the distinction between a secular and a sacramental of thinking? (21:30); what are the Sacraments? are they necessary in Christianity? (32:00); is baptism necessary for salvation? (36:30); the importance of the Eucharist (43:45); the seriousness of the Sacrament of Marriage (46:35); the role of the priesthood in the Sacramental life of the Church (49:25); Chrismation—what does it mean? (52:50); do Sacramental objects—such as relics—have spiritual power? (55:20); are we living in an enchanted world? (59:30); what makes the divine liturgy divine? (1:02:30); why is all liturgical time present time—proleptic (1:05:00); what does the liturgical cycle of the Church calendar reveal about reality? (1:07:00); the relationship between the Bible and Holy Tradition? (1:08:30); the truth about icons—what they reveal about the participatory nature of Christianity (1:12:15); how the existence of evil is an argument for the existence of God (1:16:30); is free will critical to the nature of Christianity? (1:19:15); why didn't Jesus spare himself from death? (1:22:00); “He Who Is” (1:28:15); repentance is not a momentary act, but a lifelong process (1:29:15); the fallacy of neutrality when it comes to separations of religious belief and how we govern society—separation of Church and State (1:31:15); Journey to Reality—what does it take for us to become real? (1:35:45).

Children in Church - Fr. Michael Pomazansky of Jordanville

"Let the children be conscious that they are members of Christ's family. Let the children come to love church!" With an inspiring message for parents, Fr. Michael Pomazansky exhorts us to help our children not just come to church but to learn to love church. Addressing practical aspects and the important matter of compulsion, this short article offers a always timely message to Orthodox Christian parents and their children. 0:00 Beginning 0:07 The parents' obligation to raise their children in the love of God in church 2:51 Contact with spiritual grace is one of the first concerns of Christian parents 3:35 The key to religious education and the matter of compulsion 7:24 There must be at least some active participation for the child to grow to love church Fr. Michael Pomazansky was a priest trained in Russia before the Bolshevik Revolution and later Professor at Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY. Highly revered as a living link to Holy Tradition and transmitter of true Orthodoxy, Fr. Michael reposed just before his 100tg birthday in November 4th, 1988. -READ the text here: http://orthodoxinfo.com/praxis/pomaz_children.aspx -BUY Fr. Michael's most famous work, "Orthodox Dogmatic Theology": https://www.sainthermanmonastery.com/product-p/odt.htm -FIND an Orthodox parish and monastery near you: https://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ ------- Fr. Michael writes: And however we may influence them in our family at home, however much we might teach them the Gospel, we would be depriving them of the direct action of heavenly grace, and at best we would arouse a thirst for faith in them—but we would still be keeping them far from the heavenly light and warmth, which comes down, regardless of our human efforts, in the mysteries, in all the services, in holy prayers. The task of religious 'education will be fulfilled only when we teach our children to love church. But certainly, if this remains just compulsion, and to such an extent that it creates a psychological repulsion in the young people—this will show that the aim has not been attained, that the method has proved to be inadequate and the compulsion in vain. Let the child brought by our will express a desire to remain there through his own will. Then you will have justified your action. “The holy maidens Faith, Hope and Charity, and the holy young bride Perpetua, who became martyrs, are witnesses to the fact that adolescence is an age prepared even for the highest active participation in Christ's Church. The baby in his mother's arms in church who cried out, "Ambrose for bishop!", and by his exclamation determined the choice of the renowned Ambrose of Milan for the episcopal cathedra—this baby is a defender of children's rights to an active participation in Christ's Church. And so let us take some trouble over our children: first let us give them the chance to take more part in church—and in a wider and more elevated form than just giving the censer to the priest; and secondly, let us adapt ourselves somewhat to our children when praying together with them. Let the children be conscious that they are members of Christ's family. Let the children come to love church! ______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. And while the written word should theoretically be more accurate and more trustworthy than the spoken word, history has shown that that's not the case. Words can be so easily misunderstood and misinterpreted that they can't be relied upon to convey wisdom accurately over time.So what's the most reliable way to preserve ancient truths and keep them relevant to the times? In this episode Thom explores the limitations of the intellect and the role of consciousness in creating a ‘direct line' when it comes to accessing the wisdom needed for evolutionary progress to be made.He also explains the role of a Guru in ensuring that they develop successors with the consciousness and capability to adapt teachings to meet the need of the time, and from generation to generation, without diluting the purity of the original teaching. In short, it's an explanation that it's not what you know that's important, it's ‘how' you know.Jai Guru Deva. Episode Highlights[00:55] The Role of Tradition in Vedic Worldview[03:37] Irrelevant Reaction[06:04] Our Brain is Not Being Used to Its Full Potential[08:19] The Brain as a Machine[10:33] What is Our Brain Capable Of?[12:08] Brain Development[13:50] This is Veda[16:26] Eureka![18:49] Maintaining the Purity[20:51] The Vedic Worldview is Inexhaustible[22:48] Limitations of Newton's Theory[24:31] Quantum Mechanics Can Explain Things[26:38] Maharishi Gifted Me...[28:12] How Do You Get That?[30:00] Why Do We Exist?[31:28] The Dishwasher[33:13] The Gardener[34:44] The Colorless Sap[36:13] Refining My Capability[37:26] My Great Joy[39:01] The Meaning of Jai Guru Deva Useful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com  https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, responds to a recent tweet and video by Benny Hinn. According to Hinn, the Lord spoke to him, saying he needs to talk to his audience about the great catching up. And that his teaching about the rapture is timely because this event is nearly upon us. Popularized by John Nelson Darby in the nineteenth century, the pre-tribulational rapture theory contends that God has two distinct people and two distinct plans for their two distinct destinies. The church will be raptured seven years prior to the second coming of Christ, and Jews will suffer tribulation. Beginning with Darby, rapture theorists held that, due to the murder of Messiah, Jews were in for a time of unprecedented suffering referred to as the “Great Tribulation.” Multiplied millions today hold firmly to this belief. But is it biblical? Holy Tradition, including Scripture, knows nothing of a rapture independent of the bodily appearing of Christ. Imprudence of “Solo Scriptura” — A Message from Hank Hanegraaff

“Solo Scriptura” — not sola Scriptura — is a disease of rampant innovation and a failure to respect Holy Tradition. Blaise Pascal speaking in the seventeenth century might just as well have been talking about the twenty-first: “Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.” As such, Hank Hanegraaff has dedicated this special edition of the Hank Unplugged podcast to discuss the imprudence of “solo Scriptura” with the sincere hope that in place of “solo Scriptura,” incessant innovation, and disregard for the Holy Traditions of the Church, the body of Christ may again return to “what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all” (St. Vincent of Lérins). Protopresbyter George Florovsky explained that Holy Tradition is neither “an independent instance, nor a complementary source of faith. Ecclesiastical understanding could not add anything to Scripture. But it was the only means to ascertain and to disclose the true meaning of Scripture. Tradition was, in fact, the authentic interpretation of Scripture. And in this sense, it was coextensive with Scripture. Tradition was actually Scripture rightly understood.” (Attribution to Florovsky was inadvertently left out of Hank's quotation in the recording.) For bibliographical data and documentation of sources, see Hank's From the President column, in the forthcoming (Fall 2022), “The Imprudence of ‘Solo Scriptura,'” in Christian Research Journal, vol. 45, no. 02/03 (2022).To receive this issue when it's released please subscribe to the Christian Research Journal by clicking here. https://www.equip.org/product/crj-subscription/Listen to Hank's podcast and follow Hank off the grid where he is joined by some of the brightest minds discussing topics you care about. Excerpt from "Holy Scripture and the Church" by St. Hilarion Troitsky St. Hilarion offers much clarity and foundational argumentation to help both Protestants and Orthodox come to a truly Christian approach to these central matters. This except is from part II. Listen to all three parts here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz... Read the full text here: https://www.newmartyr.info/files/Sain... "“Two sources of doctrine are usually spoken of: Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition. Both of these sources are necessary, although preference is often given to Holy Scripture. In disputes with sectarians and Protestants, much effort is made to prove that Holy Scripture alone is insufficient, that besides Scripture Holy Tradition is also needed. But if Holy Scripture is a source of doctrine, how do we extract the doctrine contained within this source? It is enough to remember Arianism and the First Ecumenical Council in order to realize that every heresy is based on Scripture. e question clearly arises: “How are we to understand Scripture so as to obtain from it true doctrine?” “It has to be understood in accordance with Tradition,” they respond to us. “Wonderful! And what sort of tradition should we accept?” “ at which does not contradict Scripture.” What do we end up with? Scripture must be interpreted in accordance with Tradition, and Tradition must be veri ed by Scripture. We end up with circular logic, idem per idem, or, translated somewhat loosely into Russian, the story of the white calf. Church doctrine has but one Source: the Holy Spirit, Who lives within the Church, Whom Christ promised would guide (ὁδηγήσει) the Church into all truth (John 16:13). Thus, the Church possesses true doctrine not because she draws it from Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, but only because she is in fact the Church of the Living God, the Pillar and Ground of Truth (1Tim 3:15), guided by the Holy Spirit. It is necessary to speak only about the Church. Both Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition stand or fall together with the Church.” This channel is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. When it comes to details of praying the Jesus Prayer, please speak with your spiritual father as he can guide you on the specific rule you will have. With Great Lent approaching, may this spur you on to speak with your spiritual father about prayer and say more often and more deeply, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” “The prayer rope is not intended to be used only by monks, but it can also be used by laymen and, generally, by anyone who wants to pray to God. The prayer rope is not some kind of amulet with magic or exorcising powers, like those given to simple-minded people by magicians or mediums, worn on the wrist or round the neck. On the contrary, it is a purely Orthodox holy object used only for praying and nothing else. We use the prayer rope in order to pray secretly.” “The prayer rope is one of the items given to an Orthodox Christian monk at the time of tonsure: it is given to him as his spiritual sword with which he, as a soldier of Christ, must make war against our spiritual enemy, the devil. This sword is wielded by calling on the name of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ in a plea for mercy on me a sinner. This prayer can be said in a shorter form, such as: ‘Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me'; or in a longer form, as: ‘By the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos and all the Saints, Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me'.” Text: http://orthodoxinfo.com/praxis/combos... Tradition has become a dirty word to many Christians in the West, often pitting Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition against one another. However, if Holy Tradition is Scripture rightly understood then there is no need for them to be viewed in conflict. Hank Hanegraaff believes that the West would do well to recapture the spiritual power of Holy Tradition that has provided Christians throughout history with the spiritual practices meant to bring us closer to Christ. As Yaroslav Pelikan so eloquently wrote in The Vindication of Tradition,” Tradition is the living faith of the dead; traditionalism is the dead faith of the living.” Simply put, Tradition is severely misunderstood by many, so Hank Hanegraaff, Francis Chan and Metropolitan Yohan discuss Holy Tradition and Francis Chan ends this discussion series with a plea for Christians to dialogue in a spirit of brotherly love, humility and unity. Time stamps: 00:38- Question 1: Can we speak of the life-giving power of Holy Communion in the context of physical health? 01:37- Answer 1: The body of which we partake in the Eucharist is the risen body of Christ...02:53 - The example of St. Basil the Great...05:08 - Question 2: So we can receive health of both soul and body from Holy Communion?05:18 - Answer 2: Yes, we can...but this is left to the discretion of God since it is not always good for us to be healthy06:10 - Question 3: If one does not wear a mask in Church is this a sign of a lack of love?07:00 - Answer 3: The error lies in the assumptions. . . the problem is that we did not accept what has happened as a penance sent by God...09:36 - God allowed for this to happen so that we might repent...i.e. an existential turn to God and absorption of our spirit [nous[ in God13:26- Question 4: Is the entire picture that is presented, then, the problem? 13:30 - Answer 4: Yes...this Body does not exclude any member from communion of God and Man14:27 - A Rhetorical Question: On what basis can a faithful man go to Church knowing that he is thereby preventing someone else from going?15:22 - Concerning Masks and entering into the worldly mentality...15:52 - We did not take the Scriptural perspective into account.16:57 - We've reached the point where the scientists determine the policy of the politicians and the politicians determine the life of the Church...18:35 - Question 5: If you could go to a church where no measures were enforced, would you go? 18:44 - Answer: I would go..without a mask, without limits on attendance, as I would not trample upon my conscience . . . 19:39 - Even so, I have not for I have personally received a penance from Christ Himself, and through repentance I await for Him to lift it...20:13 - The wonderful 'recipe' of St. Nicholas Kabasilas: for the sake of a sick man, a healthy man can spiritually take the medicine the sick man needs...Biographical Details: Professor Tselengidis' depth of knowledge, his education and studies, and his diligent research and labor have made him an internationally renowned academic theologian of Orthodox Dogmatic Theology. His most important offering and characteristic, however, is his work's fidelity to the Holy Tradition and the Deposit of the Holy Fathers, a faithfulness he acquired by following experiential theologians of our day, such as Saints Paisios of Mt. On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank addresses an email question from Amelia, who wants to know how she, as an Orthodox Christian, can show her LGBTQ friends more of her faith. In response, Hank encourages Amelia to discuss with her friends the beauty of God; the mystery of the Eucharist; the door of the wardrobe that opens into Narnia. Because the issue is never evangelism; it is equipping for evangelism. Furthermore, he advises her to learn about the liabilities of the LGBTQ lifestyle so that she can use the deviations as a springboard for sharing the beauty of an authentic Christian life, using the letter “T” in LGBTQ as an example. Being equipped for evangelism also means being able to give answers, including being able to give a defense of Holy Tradition and of Scripture, which is a product of Holy Tradition. It is hardly sufficient, however, to be intellectually equipped. As Hank has emphasized time and time again on the broadcast, it is axiomatic that we are internally equipped, energized by a power that is in us but not of us. This is the energy that alone can transform the world, including those even now entrapped in a lifestyle that overpromises and underperforms.Hank also answers the following questions:Is it okay for churches to emphasize the quality of their members rather than quantity?I have been talking with a friend who doesn't believe that Jesus is God. Where does this rejection of the Trinity come from?

The Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the University of Thessaloniki, Demetrios Tselengides, talks to us about the move by some to change the method of Holy Communion and the ensuing temptation of little Faith.00:35 - Question 1: The use of many lavides ("spoons"), is it blessed and in accordance with Holy Tradition? 02:14 - The "good uneasiness" of the Faithful is a god sign. 03:31 - The Church is led by the Holy Spirit; those faithful who are spiritually "deactivated" are in danger 06:01- The Canons of the Church define what may be done07:10 - The Church is always caring pastorally for the exactitude of safeguarding [Holy Communion]10:22 - We commune of the very Body and Blood that defeated death itself, defeated the evil one, defeated sin, and is thereafter a carrier of life.12:21 - If during this trial, this temptation, we fall into the temptation, we are essentially falling away from the Church15:03 - There are no testimonies for 2,000 years that any harm has come to priests through Holy Communion. 16:45 - Question 2: So it isn't correct to say that we separate the spoon from Holy Communion, that the spoon does not participate, and so that it could be a carrier of sicknes?16:58 - This rationale leads us into rationalism and considering all the Holy Vessels as conduits for illness. 18:02 - The critical and all-important question is not so much what is done as why it is done.Biographical Details: Professor Tselengidis' depth of knowledge, his education and studies, and his diligent research and labor have made him an internationally renowned academic theologian of Orthodox Dogmatic Theology. The First of a Three-part series of interviews with Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the University of Thessaloniki, Demetrios Tselingides, on the Ecclesiastical and Spiritual Crisis We Now Face. We have a tremendous need in the Church today for the Patristic word, for answers to the faithful's questions, and the challenges the Church is facing, based upon the teaching of the Holy Fathers. This is especially true for those outside of Greece, in the West, who are troubled and scandalized by the response which has been offered to date, and who are in search of consolation and clarity. Professor Tselengides comes to fill this need today. Professor Tselingidis' depth of knowledge, education, studies, diligent research and labor have made him an internationally renowned academic theologian of Orthodox Dogmatic Theology. One of the pitfalls of Holy Tradition is that it can turn into just another "sola," something singular we misrepresent without context. In this episode, Basil and Nicole return to the questions raised in last week's episode. Resources that pertain to this episode: Dunning-Kruger effect Matthew 16:17-18 A note from Basil on Orthodox catechitical texts: The Orthodox Churches (most likely because of the risk of misuse) does not have an Ecumenically approved “Catechism” for the entire church (as opposed to the Roman Catholic’s book “CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH"). Instead, what you will find in Orthodoxy are of variety of smaller expositions. However, these catechisms are often short and simple and sometimes raise more questions than they answer (one example is the Catechism of Archbishop Sotirios's "Orthodox Catechism: Basic Teachings of the Faith"). Having said that, one book to consider if you have the zeal for a more systematic exposition of what all Orthodox believe is St. John of Damascus’s "An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith—a summary of the dogmatic writings of the Early Church Fathers." This writing was the first work of systematic theology in Eastern Christianity and an important influence on later Scholastic works.

Topics discussed include: is there any hope for better engagement between evangelicals and Orthodox Christians? (5:30); the orthodox beliefs shared between Eastern Orthodox Christians and evangelical Christians (8:00); the increasing dialogue between evangelicals and Eastern Orthodox Christians (14:30); exploring different perspectives on the Atonement and Incarnation (20:30); underdeveloped theology regarding icons and the connection between Christ's incarnation and the basis for icons (24:30); the challenges for people who are unfamiliar with aspects of the Eastern Orthodox worship experience (29:00); the symbolic architectural significance of various church buildings and their arrangements (33:00); what do candles and incense in Orthodox churches represent? (40:00); why do so many insist on pitting Holy Tradition against Sola Scriptura? (45:00); the baptismal process and the importance of keeping the gospel clear and compelling for every generation (53:00); the opportunity for internal renewal within Orthodoxy as well as to explain to the world what Orthodox beliefs truly are (58:00); the transcendent importance of the seven Ecumenical Councils (1:09:00); remembering John 17 as we strive for unity in diversity amongst Christians (1:13:00); Sola Fide and the false dichotomy of faith and works (1:15:00).

In the Book of Genesis God says not to eat from the Tree of Life, yet in Revelation He invites us to eat from the Tree of Life. Michael explores the reasons why from an Orthodox Christian perspective. He discusses the sinfulness and sacredness of eating and hunger as taught to us through the Scriptures, specifically Genesis and Revelation, and our Holy Tradition; and what we are really doing when we fast and prepare for and receive the Eucharist.

In this program, we revisit Orthodox Holy Week with selected passages from the Holy Tradition - in the hope of trying to convey the richness of the "conversation" between God and the Church. For Christ invites us to go with Him to the Holy Cross, and we find ourselves both willing and unwilling, like the repentant harlot and the betrayer Judas, like the good thief and the blind and unbelieving crowd. Glory to God in Christ! He overcomes the wrath and sins of mankind through love and humility in His Suffering and tramples down Death by Death.
