On this Fifth Sunday in Lent, we explore a classic Biblical story in Luke 19:1-10. This is the story of Zacchaeus, who climbed up a tree to see Jesus as he was coming into Jericho. We see where God shows up in this story between righteousness and mercy. We find that Jesus' mercy leads to the transformation of Zacchaeus and beyond. Thank you again for worshipping with us. Today we wrestle with this hard command that Jesus gives us in Luke 6:27-38, to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate you. Join us as we let this hard lesson seep into our souls and may they help us transform the world around us by their power. May we see the people around us as God does, as bearers of God's image and people worth God's grace and love. Thank you again for worshipping with us. Today is Pastor Jim's annual "State of the Church" sermon. He will reflect on where we have been as a congregation and where God is calling us in this new year. This Sunday we wrap up our worship series, "Out of Context" with Matthew 7:1, "Don't judge, so that you won't be judged." Our Christian culture takes this in two different directions, so if we place this verse back into it's context...does it mean what people think it means? Thank you again for worshipping with us. Welcome to the sermon from our modern worship service. In 2025, on the 4th Sunday of the month we are experimenting with two worship services. Our 9:00am is just like our usual worship. At 11:00 we are doing something new with a modern worship service. thank you for joining us this week as we continue our worship series, "Out of Context." This Sunday we look at Jeremiah 29:11, a very popular verse. When we place it back into the context of the prophet Jeremiah, does it really mean what we think it means? Today we start a new worship series called, "Out of Context." For the next four weeks we will be looking at four verses people love to quote, put on their walls, or engrave on their jewerly or bodies. We will take each of those scriptures and put them back into the context they were written. Then we will ask the question, does this verse really mean what we think it means. Today we look at the most quoted scripture in Hobby Lobby and in locker rooms, Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. On this last Sunday of the Christmas Season, Epiphany Sunday, we celebrate a lot. Not only do we have communion and a baptism, but we also celebrate God putting on flesh and coming to make his home here, in flesh and bone, among us. He doesn't just come for the holy family or Jewish shepherds. God puts on flesh for all people, even forgeiners like the Magi and even all of us in 2025. May you feel it this Christmas Season. MERRY CHRISTMAS!Our special offering will be going towards Zoe Empowers. John the Baptist's message is front and center but do we have ears to actually listen or do they fall deaf to this yearly message? If we have a hard time with John's message to take our faith seriously, then how are we going to follow the babe in the manger. Music fills this time of year, pointing to the realities of two babys we celebrate. Today, we hear the story of Zechariah's song as he holds his child, John the Baptist, in his arms. As we continue to prepare this Advent season, may we find and experience the depth of the carols that make up our season. May we pause and remember to be open to their call for mercy and peace.Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. Today we start our yearly journey of Advent. We begin the Christian year off by looking forward to Jesus's second advent, or second coming, while preparing ourselves to celebrate Jesus's first coming on Christmas. In the text today we learn that apololyptic texts were written to give people hope in times of dispair and great turmoil. There are many in our lives that need this same type of hope too. This is the final Sunday of the Christian year, known as Christ the King Sunday. It is a time to remember that Jesus Christ reigns over this world and our hearts. As we focus on the King of Kings, we read about his conversation with Pilate and Pilate's question, "What is truth?" Join us as we look at what, or better yet, who is the Truth.Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. Thank you again for worshipping with us. Today we continue our series on Faithful Finances by looking at the budget of Milford Hills UMC. It is within that budget that God transforms gifts and tithes into an offering to the world through our mission and ministries. Church Finances are complicated though, and so Pastor Jim attempts to shed some light on why things look the way they do. We also start praying about our Estimate of Giving Cards for 2025, which will be turned in next Sunday during worship. Oh, no, the preacher is going to talk about money, this week and the next. Today we hear from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 6:22-24. Here he tells us that we can only serve one master, we need can only serve either God or wealth/money. If you pay attention to the American culture though, we serve money way too much and that gets us into trouble. It can get us into trouble through many ways, but without being deilgent and prudent, we will serve our debt before we serve God.Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. Today we celebrate All Saints Day, a day to remember those who have gone before us since last year. It is a time to mourn and a time to remember. The scripture today is from Mark 12:28-34, where Jesus answers a legal expert's question by quoting the Shema, a daily prayer and Deuteronomy 6:4-5. Shema is a Hebrew word that starts this prayer and it reminds us that we need to listen and obey the God we worship, just like those who have gone before have. Today, we finish our three week series on our new Discipleship Pathway. This is a pathway we have created to teach and lead people into a deeper relationship with God and to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. We combined our logo, our mission statement, membership vows, and pratical markers in the journey to create a path for anyone to follow. Today we look at how we are to live as Christ from Mark's calling the disciples and from Philippians as we adopt the attitude of Christ. We are to live as Christ by diving deep into our prayers and our witness. We learn that disciples pray daily and participate in other spiritual disciplines to grow closer to God but they also invite others to follow too. This is how we become fishers of people.Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. Thank you again for worshipping with us. James' 3rd chapter reminds us that words are important. If we use them without reguard to their power, they can cause more damage than good. As the GenZ Bible puts verse 9, “We use our words to praise God, our Father, and sadly, we also use our words to insult or curse fellow humans, who are created in God's image.” We explore the power of words this week and we are glad you are joining us. We wrap up this six-week series on the book, "Questions Jesus Asked," by Magrey DeVega, today. We have looked at a different question each week to deepen our relationship with the one who asked them. This week we explore the question, "What are you looking for?" As Andrew and the other disciple come to follow Jesus, his is the question he asks them. It begs the question, what is it you are looking for and are you truly ready for the answer that Jesus will give? Are you ready and willing to do the work that the answer requires?Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. This is a six-week series on the book, "Questions Jesus Asked," by Magrey DeVega. We will look at a different question each week to deepen our relationship with the one who asked them. This week we explore the question, "Whom will you love?" In the Sermon on the Plain in Luke 6, Jesus gives some really hard things to do as his disciples. We are to love our enemy and if we do, that tells the world the power of Jesus's love and grace. This is easier said than actually done, but it isn't impossible for someone. This is a six-week series on the book, "Questions Jesus Asked," by Magrey DeVega. We will look at a different question each week to deepen our relationship with the one who asked them. This week we explore the question, "What do you live for?" We all live for something, college football, the fall, pumpkin spice whatever, basketweaving, or the grandchildren. However, if we are to have an abundant life, one that follows Jesus, then we need to cast those things aside and put Christ first. We are to pick up our cross and follow Jesus. This is a six-week series on the book, "Questions Jesus Asked," by Magrey DeVega. We will look at a different question each week to deepen our relationship with the one who asked them. This week we explore the question, "Why are you anxious?" In Luke's gospel, Jesus reminds us of ravens and lilies who aren't worried about life as much as us humans. If God will provide for them, how much more will God provide what we need? Anxiety is a hard thing to turn off and in this sermon we explore some ways to combat those emotions and to focus on what God is and has already given us. This is a six-week series on the book, "Questions Jesus Asked," by Magrey DeVega. We will look at a different question each week to deepen our relationship with the one who asked them. This week we explore the question, "Why are you afraid?" The disciples are being rocked by a storm on the lake and JEsus is just taking a nap in the back of the boat. When they wake him up, he asks them, "Why are you afraid?" The tone of that question can chage the way we hear it and the way we can answer it.Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. We are in the middle of our three-week journey with a modern worship style and a deep look into the 6th chapter of Mark. Today we begin with a story of the death of John the Baptist. We start a three-week journey with a modern worship style and a deep look into the 6th chapter of Mark. Today we begin with a story of Jesus going to his hometown and being rejected there. Then he withdraws with his disciples before sending them out on their missionary journey. We look at the parables of Mark 4:26-34. Parables are interesting because the more you sit with them the more they can teach us. Today we sit with a parable unique to Mark's gospel and another more familiar one. They both teach us that sometimes, the Kingdom of God doesn't have anything to do with us, but everything to do with God. On this Ascension Sunday, we hear the story of the disciples watching Jesus ascend into heaven to sit at the right hand of his Father. What does this mean for us? It means our work to bring about the Kingdom of God begins. We are now tethered to the power of Christ, wherever we are, because he sits at the right hand of God. United Methodists are people who are methodical about their process. To be the church, we have to make decisions about living in this world. We have a process for that. United Methodists are people of grace. We believe in three different types of grace, Privenant, Justifying, and Sanctifying. These three graces lead us on the path of life or the way of salvation. This week we explore the details of these graces as we continue our series on the basics of who we are as a denomination and what we believe. Join us at 10:00 am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online this Sunday. Christ's death is not the end of the story.Thank you again for worshipping with us. When we are in the falling-in-love stage of a relationship, it is all about ourselves. It is how the other person makes us feel. We are called to follow God beyond that phase and into a deeper relationship, one that focuses on the service of the other. Today we witness Jesus come into the Holy City of Jerusalem and we celebrate he comes not to do what we desire, but what we need from God instead. esus's words in John 12 call us to die to self in order to glorify God. This is much harder than it seems in our very individualistic and selfish culture. To live, we need to be fed by the one who died for us. Please join us at 10:00am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online at the link below. We get uncomfortable with angry Jesus, the one who uses a whip to kick the money changers and others out of the temple. But this story in the 2nd Chapter of John brings up an uncomfortable question for us...what would Jesus kick out in our worship, in our churches, if he walked through the doors. What have we created that is actually devouring us?Please join us at 10:00am in person (1630 Statesville Blvd in Salisbury, NC) or online at the link below. Thank you again for worshipping with us.
