The greatest occasions of the Church Year have what is called a vigil, that is, the celebration begins the day before. Christmas Eve, or the Vigil of the Nativity of our Lord, is on December 24th. All Saints Day is preceded by the Vigil of All Saints, or All Hallow's Eve, which we now call Halloween.…
If you have been following this show for awhile, you know our history with The Boondock Saints. We reviewed the first one and mostly still loved it as much as we did nostalgically. But our history with Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day is much darker. What can largely be viewed as one of the worst sequels ever, Mike and Sean sentenced it to some jail-time in our “On-trial” episode. It's out and we figured it was time to talk about it again. All Saints Day, 12-01-2024, Mother Andrea preaching
A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. For Elise and I, it's never too early to start celebrating Christmas! I know some refuse to deck the halls until after Thanksgiving, but in our house, we rarely make it all the way to All Saints Day before we start decorating! And after Epiphany, when we finally take down the tree, we put up a little leafless tree branched with lights to take its place until next year's festivities. In the hustle and bustle of life, often the first thing to get lost in the rush is celebration. The to-do list takes precedence. Our holy days (now jammed together into one word: holiday) lose their sacredness not because God is absent, but because we didn't stop to be present with him. This can be because work is hectic or the concerns of the world weigh too heavily on our souls. Surely this was at least in part what Pope Pius XI had in mind when, as he witnessed the rise of fascism changing the political landscape of post-Great War Europe, he instituted the Feast of Christ the King. Several denominations and fellowships have followed suit in the decades following 1925, calling Christ's people to slow down and celebrate a feast on the last Sunday of November. For nearly one hundred years, millions of Christians have celebrated the Feast of Christ the King! As we read Jude's final words to the Church (24-25), his great doxology of praise and adoration, let's celebrate together that Jesus Christ is King! This Sunday, we rejoice as we dedicate our children to Christ's love and care, baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and break Christ's bread of communion. In the fellowship hall we will have some special treats and ways to feast together. But that is just the beginning! Take this final week before Advent as a time to remember how Jesus was born among us, how He made His dwelling in our midst, and how we now wait in expectant wonder for His return; and celebrate with your friends and family what it means that Christ is our King. This is good news, indeed!
All Saints Day- the day we celebrate victory in Christ by remembering those who have gone before us and honoring the work of Christ in us as well. listener comments? Feedback? Shoot us a text!Day of the Dead is Subversive Spirituality! Long before the arrival of Europeans, some of the Indigenous Mesoamerican traditions of honoring the dead were celebrated with two specific feasts: Mikailwitl (feast of the dead), and Wey Mikailwitl (great feast of the dead). These feasts were celebrated in early August through mid-September. In fact, we are currently in the “month” of Mikailwitl right now, as it began on August 8th or the day Chikome Kozkakwawtli in the ancestral Mexika calendar. These celebrations were dedicated to honoring the dead through dance, song, and offerings of food and drink. Altars and burials were adorned with marigolds, a sacred flower thought to attract the spirits so that they might enjoy the offerings left in their memory.Today, these celebrations have been blended with Catholic traditions, and take place on All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Many think that Mikailwitl and Wey Mikailwitl were absorbed into the Allhallowtide (All Saints Day and All Souls Day) under the direction of the Catholic Church, as these Christian holidays also involve honoring the dead. Unfortunately, this popular claim is often repeated without any evidence to back it up. For example, a column about Dia de Muertos published on the website weareyourvoicemag states “in an attempt to convert the natives to Catholicism, the Spanish colonizers moved the celebration to November 1 and 2 (All Saints Day), which is when we celebrate it currently.”But is this how it really happened? Listen and find out as we explore the different ways that our ancestors negotiated and navigated the colonial process by masking their rituals and ceremonies behind a catholic facade! On All Saints' Day, a.k.a. The Feast of All Hallows, we dig deep into the significance of this important celebration in the Church. Pastor Brady Finnern comes on the show to discuss life after death from a biblical and pastoral perspective. What happens when believers die? What is it like in Heaven? Do unbelievers go straight to Hell? We'll also address questions on the resurrection, the communion of saints, and the ultimate future that awaits believers and unbelievers alike in this final episode of the special four-part All Hallows miniseries. The Rev. President Brady Finnern, president of the Minnesota North District and host of Concord Matters on KFUO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to discuss All Saints Day and life after death. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. We all have, or have had, people who have touched our lives and influenced us in positive ways. Because of them, something in us has changed ... our own sense of worth, our worldview, the way we engage with others, the way we see and understand God. These are our “saints.” These are the ones we remember on All Saints Day. Many of them are no longer with us physically, some may even, at best, be unlikely saints. But, they are saints just the same. Join hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith, as they help us reflect on the those who make up our list of saints. We are well aware of how tough it would be to find positivity from the New Orleans Saints, who will be trying to avoid a seven-game losing streak (which would be the first for the team since 1999). Still, with quarterback Derek Carr's return, is there any hope remaining at all? Jim Derry asks that and much more of FOX-8's Garland Gillen on an All Saints Day version of the Dattitude Podcast (Ep. 304) presented by Evangeline Securities. We also answer questions from fans such as: “Will Dennis Allen be fired if the Saints lose this weekend? What would it take for Mickey Loomis to leave? Should they tank to get a better draft pick? (Eye roll.)” We also talk about Tulane's victory at Charlotte on Thursday night, LSU's upcoming game vs. Alabama and the struggles of the New Orleans Pelicans and unrealistic expectations and wants of local fans.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 31, is the Eve of All Saints, also known as All Hallows' Eve or Hallowe' en, and commonly known as Halloween. In England, saints or holy people are called “hallowed,” meaning “All Hallows' Day.”Halloween or All Hallows' Eve is not a liturgical feast on the Catholic calendar. However, the celebration has deep Catholic meaning. The three consecutive days — Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day — illustrate the Communion of Saints. In other words, Halloween is the preparation and combination of the two upcoming feasts. We, the Church Militant (those on earth striving to get to heaven), pray for the Church Suffering (those souls in Purgatory), especially on All Souls Day and November. We rejoice and honor the Church Triumphant (the saints, canonized and uncanonized) in heaven. We also ask the Saints' intercession for us. The demonic, witchcraft, and macabre practices have no place in a Catholic celebration. Do you need to dress in any costume? Tied to the theme of the saints, as shown below. Let's imitate them and what they did to reach heaven by preparing our souls for death. [To learn more, please check these interesting links at our website]. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Does anyone else feel like the veil between life and death, this world and the next, thins around this time of year?Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and Dia de los Muertos mark the beginning of the holiday season—a time for family, nostalgia, and deep connection. This week also happens to be my birthday. From my early childhood, my birthday celebrations often mingled with Halloween themes. But it was on my 18th birthday, while cleaning up a vandalized cemetery, that I found a profound connection to my life's passion: family history. For more than 30 years, my experiences have continually revealed the powerful links between life's celebrations and the remembrance of the deceased. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for cultural traditions that honor those who have passed. It's not just about looking back—it's about forging deep connections with our roots and our family, regardless of which side of the veil they are on._______________________________________________Please rate and review this podcast and then share it with your family and friends. For ideas on how to connect more deeply with your family through family stories, follow Crista on Instagram @CristaCowan.

Why do we dedicate one night of the year to wearing costumes and asking for candy? How did such an odd holiday become an established part of the American calendar? Should students at a classical school be celebrating such a holiday? Is Halloween classical? In this episode, Winston Brady and Josh Herring talk through the ways Halloween may or may not be classical. Halloween largely derives from the Catholic feast day of All Saints' Day and All Hallow's Eve, celebrated on a day that the ancient, pagan Irish used to celebrate a holiday called Samhain (pronounced, saa-wn).In one sense, perhaps, Halloween is classical. Herein, we have a pagan holiday absorbed by a Christian feast day so that the occasion for gathering together and celebrating still remains–even if its dark undertones are obscured. Much of what we call classical education focuses on the relationship between Jerusalem and Athens (and Rome, for that matter). Think of the city of Rome, full of obelisks taken from pagan Egypt which the Catholic Church crowned with Christian crosses, symbolizing the Christian world's triumph over the forces of paganism. But of course today, those Christian overtones are largely missing from Halloween. Now, the night is a chance to escape one's identity, eat gobs of candy, and perhaps engage in mischief–elements that are most likely, not classical, in the sense of classical education's emphasis on virtue. Good character is what you do when no one is looking over your shoulder, a voluntary act of the will to pursue what is good, true, and beautiful. After all, classical education emphasizes human dignity and gratitude for the way that God created you. Classical education emphasizes self-control and personal responsibility, so one should never eat too much candy in one sitting, regardless of the day. Also, classical education emphasizes traditional morality and love of neighbor, so we would never encourage, tolerate, or promote the toilet papering of trees or the smashing of pumpkins. The mischievous elements of Halloween are in that way, uniquely unclassical. So, this Halloween, if you go out and get candy, be safe. If you wear a costume, put some thought into it so that it's clever and whole, both ingenious and ingenuous at the same time–not merely a costume you bought online. Be safe, and resist the temptation to engage in those Halloween pranks that do nothing to cultivate what is good, true, and beautiful. And be aware of the background of some of the elements of Halloween–the spooky, ghostly elements–that might make for an interesting discussion with friends. Indeed, they may be the best argument for staying inside on Halloween and just reading a good ghost story. We can acknowledge some reasonable, healthy religious impulses in existing pagan traditions and in the way described in the episode, “baptize” them. All the while though, we should, of course, recognize the ghastly, unnatural, and evil impulses and reject those elements of the holiday. A classical education should equip us to choose what is good and persuade others to choose what is good, too–and such things aren't thrown out just because it's Halloween.
We kick off this four-part “All Hallows Special” with a discussion surrounding the origins and modern practice of Hallowe'en. Is this spooky season really something for Christians to avoid? Does dressing up like Spiderman and going trick-or-treating mean that your child is participating in ancient pagan cultures? Although many have usurped this season for their own nefarious purposes, the pastors explain that much of the hype and fear around Halloween came about only recently. Discover how Hallowe'en (or All Hallows Eve) is connected to Reformation Day, All Saints Day, and whether Christians should take part. The Rev. Rick Schneider pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ronan, MT, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to discuss the origins of Hallowe'en. If you're passionate about education and supporting underserved communities, you'll love this episode of the Reading with Your Kids podcast. Jed Doherty sits down with Summer Schneider, the head of school at Legacy College Prep, a charter school in the South Bronx that's making a big difference in the lives of its students. Summer shares the inspiring mission of Legacy College Prep - to ensure all students have access to opportunities after high school, whether that's college or other paths like trade schools or the military. She explains the unique autonomy and flexibility that charter schools have, which allows them to tailor their curriculum and approach to best serve their students. One of the biggest challenges facing Legacy College Prep is the high number of students who are performing two or more grade levels behind when they enroll. But Summer and her team are laser-focused on building reading habits and providing extra support to help these students catch up and thrive. Beyond academics, Summer also discusses the importance of rebuilding the partnership between schools and families, especially after the pandemic disrupted in-person interactions. She shares how Legacy College Prep is working to bring parents back into the school community. Jed and Summer also touch on the nationwide teacher shortage and Legacy College Prep's efforts to ensure they're fully staffed and able to provide the best possible education. But the real heart of this episode lies in Legacy College Prep's commitment to college preparation and making higher education accessible and affordable for their students. Summer explains the school's partnerships with universities and their focus on guiding families through the financial aid process. The episode takes an exciting turn when Jed welcomes back Antony Kolenc and Leslea Wahl, from the Catholic Teen Authors group. They discuss their latest anthology, "Shadows, Visible and Invisible," which explores the Catholic traditions surrounding All Hallows' Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Tony and Leslea share the collaborative process of creating these anthologies and the importance of preserving and sharing these rich cultural and faith-based stories with young readers. They encourage listeners to check out the Catholic Teen Books website to discover more inspiring, wholesome books for teens, and to support local independent bookstores by requesting the anthology. It's clear that the Catholic Teen Authors are on a mission to provide teens with literature that nourishes both the mind and the spirit. Send us a textShould christians celebrate halloween? Should churches hold "Trunk or Treat" events? Is it biblically permissible or is it a Christian conscience? This week Greg sat down with Jason Farley to discuss these questions. Jason is an author, poet, and Creative Director at Loor.tv, and he also hosts a podcast and substack. This was a friendly episode between to brothers who disagree, and I think it will help those who find themselves in either of two the camps. Enjoy! Every day of our lives, we are writing our story. Sometimes the story comes out the way we plan it and sometimes it's something altogether different. The thing is that we don't write our story alone. It is added to by the people we encounter and with whom we journey. Some of those “co-writers” become like saints to us. That's right, ordinary people can do or say ordinary things that become extraordinary influences in our lives... even if we don't recognize it in the moment. It's important that we don't underestimate the power of story, or the power of others to influence our stories. As we come close to the celebration of All Saints Day, a time for remembering and honoring the “saints” in our lives, this episode of Awaken to God's Presence leads listeners through a time of story remembering that focuses on the saints with whom they have journeyed.
