Pastor Jim guides us through how the church went from one unified gathering to the various denominations we see today.
Send us a textIn this episode of The Public Square on the Pursuing Faith Network, Iggy and Pastor Mike dive into a big question a lot of believers wrestle with today: Why are there so many Christian denominations? They talk about where these divisions came from, whether they still serve a purpose, and if they're actually helping Christians grow—or pulling us further apart. They break down some of the history behind different denominations while also looking at the practical side of things: how they shape our faith, how they influence the way we read Scripture, and whether they bring clarity or confusion to the body of Christ. It's an honest, thought-provoking conversation about unity, truth, and what really matters when it comes to following Jesus. If you've ever wondered why the church looks the way it does or whether denominations are still healthy for believers today, this episode will give you a lot to think about.

(This podcast was previously published on December 20, 2020) Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... The apostle Paul called the elders of the church at Ephesus to come meet with him because Paul knew they would never see him again and Paul had a "charge" to give them concerning the church. Acts 20:25-30 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which HE hath purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. The early church was already to feel division by those persons who were "antichrist". The apostle John explains: I John 2:18-19 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. And the apostle Paul explains the way some were trying to worship the preachers, which divides the body of Christ. I Corinthians 3:1-4 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? (One says, "I'm Baptist." and another says, "I'm Methodist.") Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (To try to keep from dividing the church, we can just say, "I'm a Christian," if we feel we must identify ourselves.) But often the person who hears this will ask, "What church?" for that person is carnal, failing to know there is only one church and that church has nothing to do with all these denominations set up by man to divide the body of Christ. The division in the church comes because some people put themselves into the church without having the spirit of God. Jude 17-19 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers (copiers/imitators) in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. Such in the church groups are just waiting to have opportunity to say what they think. And without the Spirit, they speak their ideas to the church, what they think, and these are "perverse" things as Paul knew they would speak after his departure from the church at Ephesus. And Paul knew they were just waiting for an opportunity to draw away disciples after themselves. And by these the various denominations began where the church was divided one from another through their churches.

As some of you know, the King's Way Podcast is a product of King's Way Christian Church...but why is this church named that? Isn't it redundant to say "Christian" and "Church" in the same name? Other churches don't have both of those words in their name, and they're still Christians. Does King's Way draw from a history of specific churches or submit to a church government outside of the four walls of their local church? Christian denominations can be really confusing, so in this episode, Trevor and Ryan start from scratch, explaining what a denomination even is, why there are so many, and what that means about King's Way specifically. There's a lot they left out, so if you'd like a part 2, comment and let us know!Additionally, you can join the conversation by sharing your experience stumbling in to the world of Christian denominations or how a previous church of yours differed from ours!Additional Resources:Full Denominational History (LONG)https://youtu.be/8q6FUlay-M8?si=0JOYB4drx0k2UVEhThe Idea of Denominationshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtZ07UhBg7MChristian Church Overviewhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se0J-JzKZ1Y
In this heartfelt Ask Me Anything, Rabbi Bernath responds to someone from the Kabbalah for Everyone Community, a lifelong Reform Jew who asks a question many have quietly carried: “Am I less of a Jew because I was raised Reform?”Rabbi Bernath explores how Jewish identity transcends denominational labels. What has amazed me most in the last 11 years is the incredible unity in the body of Christ out in the marketplace. On Sunday, we are the most segregated, separated people on the planet. But on Monday morning, when we go to work, nobody cares about Denominations. All they care about is, "I want to hang out with and do business with people who love Jesus. I don't care that you may show your love for Jesus in a different way than I do or sing different songs on Sunday than I do. All I care is that you love Jesus." Jesus prayed for us in John 17. He prayed that we as believers would be one so that through that oneness, the world would know that God sent Jesus. In the marketplace, I see this unity. For the sake of the people in our communities, let's lay down our denominational swords and walk in Unity as we minister to their needs in the name of Jesus.

In Episode 94 of Operation: Thriving Marriage, Bryon and Jennifer Harvey open up about a topic that quietly challenges many Christian couples — what happens when you fall in love with someone from a different denomination? Through humor, honesty, and their trademark wisdom, the Harveys share their own journey of blending faith traditions while building a unified spiritual life together. Jennifer grew up Catholic, while Bryons background was a patchwork of Protestant experiences from various military base churches. Their love story took an unexpected turn when God used their shared passion for musical theater — especially the production Godspell (based on the Gospel of Matthew) — to deepen their spiritual bond. What started as an artistic connection became a divine bridge between two expressions of the same faith. In this heartfelt episode, the Harveys explore what it means to create “Team Marriage” even when faith traditions differ. Jennifer recalls searching for a Catholic parish where Bryon might feel at home, joking that finding a priest who could “keep a Protestant's attention” was no easy task. But underneath the laughter lies a profound truth: denominational differences don't have to divide a couple — they can deepen understanding, strengthen communication, and expand spiritual growth when approached with humility and grace. Bryon and Jennifer's story becomes a living example of Ephesians 4:3 — “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Whether you're Catholic and Baptist, Pentecostal and Anglican, or simply on different pages spiritually, this episode offers practical wisdom on how to honor your backgrounds while staying centered on Christ.

Send us a textArnie, Fred and Glenn continue the discussion of why am I a member of the Church of Christ? We ran out of time before we completed our discussion of the term saint that we find in the New Testament. We complete that in this episode. We move on to talk about denominations and some important facts about them that we should know. We begin by looking at some of the titles that are used in them and what Jesus says about that. We talk about how important teaching the word of God is and what James says about those who would become teachers. Next, we note that special clothing is sometimes worn by leaders in denominational churches and what the New Testament says about this. We talk about where the Christians met for worship in the first century and why that is important for us to know. Next, we discuss why denominations exist, where they come from and what the New Testament says about that. We begin the next phase of this study by looking at the exchange Jesus had with the scribes and Pharisees relating to their traditions and how they replaced God's commandments with them. There are a number of important lessons to be learned from Jesus' discussion with them. We talk about some of those lessons and how they relate to the denominations that exist today. We move on to look at a number of passages that tell us what happens when we do not follow what God says or the pattern, He provided for us to follow. We will continue this discussion in the next episode. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode provided for your convenience.

TODAY'S LESSONLet's not sugarcoat it: we are living in one of the most divided times in history. Politics, culture, even petty differences rip people apart. Sadly, the Church isn't immune. Denominations split. Friendships collapse. Whole communities fracture. And every time we let division win, the enemy laughs. But Jesus prayed something radical in John 17: that His followers would be one, just as He and the Father are one. Think about that—He tied the credibility of our witness to the world directly to our unity. In other words, the world won't believe our message if they don't see our love for one another.Unity doesn't mean uniformity. We don't all look the same, think the same, or worship the same way. But unity means we recognize we're on the same team, fighting the same enemy, under the same Lord. It means we value the mission over our preferences. It means we refuse to cancel each other when disagreements come. Here's the truth: the devil doesn't fear a big church; he fears a united one. A divided church is powerless. A united church is unstoppable.Unity requires humility. It requires forgiveness. It requires dying to self. But the reward? A witness so powerful the world can't deny it.
Join Apostle Jim Raley as he delivers an inspiring sermon on the significance of the 'mingled oil' from Exodus 30. This powerful message explores the unity of generations, cultures, and denominations as one body in Christ. Through a passionate call for collective anointing, Apostle Raley emphasizes the importance of coming together under the Holy Spirit's guidance to break barriers and usher in revival.
Is the diversity of denominations a strength or a weakness? This section explores the tension between unity and division in the church, the danger of elevating minor issues, and how Christians can stand together on essentials while disagreeing in love.Learn how to invest in real estate with the Cashflow 2.0 System! Michael Horton, Bob Hiller, Walter Strickland, and Justin Holcomb address the charge of division by exploring the Protestant understanding of visible and invisible church unity, the authority of Scripture, and the nature of confessional agreement. In this message, Pastor Jordan explores the history and purpose of church denominations, from the early unified church to the Great Schism and the Protestant Reformation. He distinguishes between "closed-handed" core theological beliefs (like the Nicene Creed) and "open-handed" practices that lead to denominational differences. Drawing from Romans 14, Jordan encourages unity amidst diversity, emphasizing that believers, regardless of their specific denominational practices, are accepted by God and should avoid judging one another, instead focusing on their shared love for Christ and their individual gifts within the larger body of believers.
Good morning! Today's episode will be a continuing discussion on denominations. Which denomination will CGS join? There will also be a discussion on foreign policy. How should Christians think about the Iraq and Iran conflict?

Greg answers questions about why there are so many different denominations, how to help someone who prayed a prayer as a child but doesn't seem to be following Jesus, people saying, “Oh my God,” and knowledge of Jesus through existential experience. Topics: Why are there so many different denominations? (05:00) How can I help people who are counting on a prayer they prayed as a child—but have no evidence of sanctification in their lives—understand that they have a need for Jesus? (23:00) Can you explain why you don't have a problem with people saying, “Oh my God”? (40:00) My fundamental existential experience of Jesus seems undeniable. Is this a category in epistemology?
