Vapor lock or victory? Open your gate of fear and start riding life
When life takes more effort do you make more effort?
It’s all mental. Pull the weeds. Kill the roots.
If the only thing holding you back is money, then you are the problem. Bull riding is not the lottery. When you win the lottery once, you are probably set for life. You are going to have to win many bull ridings at the highest levels – PBR, NFR, etc. – over a long period of time to be even remotely financially sound. It is possible. This week’s Monster in the Making® podcast is about making it easier to nod your head, before you even get there. Even when you’re riding percentage is high, you are not going to win every time. Having a financial cushion to get through the non-winning times is a huge part of your mindset each time you ride. Hell, it’s a huge part of each time you get out of bed. Knowing you have enough money to continue to achieve your goals in the arena is a mental game changer. You can win it. You can earn it with a job. You could do both. Why not be the world champion with a side hustle? Earn money. Win money. Save money. Before you take over in the arena, take over your finances. You can. True winners dominate in every area of life. Discipline your priorities. Becoming a Monster in the Making® with your finances – regardless of how much you win, earn or inherit each day – will help you become a Monster in the Making® in any arena. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be financially better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
Strengths and weaknesses - we all have them whether we know it or not. We all have them whether we admit it or not. Building on your strengths is admirable, but if you don’t improve your weaknesses, they will always be what limits your progress in any area of your life. Sometimes it’s good to look under the hood and do an overhaul on yourself. A little self-maintenance can go a long way in building a better monster, but it helps to know exactly what you’re working on to really improve it. Knowing what our physical strengths and weaknesses are is usually pretty straightforward. Knowing the limitations and long shots of our personalities may not be as obvious. That’s where this episode of the Monster in the Making® podcast comes in. Episode 28 reminds us to evaluate what we can recreate on a personal level. Sometimes we are blind to our own faults. We are too close to the problem to even see the problem (kind of like that “can’t see the forest for the trees” saying.) That’s where true friends come in. An objective friend can be a treasure in offering constructive feedback on identifying our strengths and weaknesses – especially if one of our weaknesses is getting defensive about what we are not so good at. And to our benefit, they’ll often point out things that we may be so good at that we don’t even realize it because it’s second nature to us. When you know better, you’ll grow better. If you want to get better, improve your personal weak spots. If you’re not sure what they are, ask a few friends to help you figure it out. Then build a better monster. You can. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®. Be a really good one.
Are you willing to accept the consequences of you decisions? That’s a major milestone in maturity. Are you willing to succeed beyond negative consequences of your decisions? That’s a major marker of who you are as a person. The more extreme your original decision, the more extreme the consequences. By both measures, former bull rider Roy Dell Barnes is an extreme guy. He’s a dragon slayer on wheels. A bull riding accident in 1986 left Roy Dell paralyzed. He exchanged two feet for four wheels and has never looked back. David Berry can testify to this. He was there the night it happened. He and Roy Dell were friends before and still. Episode 27 of the Monster in the Making® podcast is a conversation with Roy Dell. This podcast is the definition of David’s favorite saying: What do you want? How bad do you want it? and What are you willing to do about it? From the topics such as the accident by the numbers, to being raised twice, to bringing yourself back to center – this podcast is a wagonload of intriguing, inspiring and introspective thoughts on being who you are meant to be – and you will laugh through it all! Where you are or what you’re doing are not who you are. Regardless of where you are or what you are doing, who you are defines everything. Roy Dell Barnes is living proof. He’s a dragon slayer on wheels. He’s a Monster in the Making® everyday. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®. Roll on…
We didn’t invent our body, but we can shape it. We didn’t manufacture our mind, but thankfully, we can use it enhance our outcomes. We are our choices. Every aspect of our existence - winning or losing - it’s all our choosing. What goes around comes around. Episode 26 of the Monster in the Making® podcast is all about the energy we send out. It’s also about the energy we get back - and why. The difference between random and reality is real. Get real then get ready! Our mental energy is more powerful than our physical efforts. We can program and direct our subconscious positively or negatively. We can each improve at any age. That is what being a Monster in the Making® is all about - growing. We make the choices. We make the difference. Great inner energy is contagious. You get what you give. Give more so you can get more and then give again – all powerfully positive and productive. The Monster in the Making® podcast is all about helping each other be more. We can all be more. Grow gratefully. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
Like the law of gravity, the law of attraction is universal. It’s powerful. It’s profound. It’s personal. David’s passionate about the power of the Law of Attraction. It’s a series he’s serious about. Episode 25 in the Monster in the Making® podcast is round three in the series. It’s a continuation of his conversations with others about how recognizing this law helps you take responsibility for the results you get in your life every day – good or bad. David’s long-time friend, Jim Gwartney, is this episode’s guest. It’s a conversation they’ve had often over the years, but this time it got recorded. David always says “there’s more.” Understanding and applying the law of attraction is a profound way to receive more. You get what you give. Give yourself more. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
Part 2 of the Law of Attraction series on the Monster in the Making® podcast. David’s son Derek is the guest. Derek has studied, practiced and recognized the law of attraction principles for some time and he’s just getting started. As an added bonus, you’ll get to hear David learn new vocabulary words! As a grown father and son who just met a few years ago, they are living the law of attraction forward. Powerful. Universal. Growth. Never quit growing. Now we got us a game. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
You have thoughts. You have choices. You have control. Really. You do. You’ve probably heard that life’s not about what happens, it’s how you react to it. But what if you could affect what happens to you in your life each day? Episode 23 of the Monster in the Making® podcast begins to explore the law of attraction (a modern name for Biblical teachings) and how it applies to each of us equally. Gather up your 60,000 thoughts a day for about 60 minutes in this first episode in a series of podcasts on why and how we can each take more responsibility for the outcomes in our life on an ongoing basis. Relationships, occupations, finances, competitions, and more – if we think about it, we can affect it. Never quit growing. Now we got us a game. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
Everybody wants results. Not everybody wants to do what it takes to get those results. As hard as you may (or may not) train for your physical goals, your mental training (or lack thereof) can make or break all of your other efforts. True story. Episode 22 of the Monster in the Making® podcast is about the decisions you make before you make decisions. Positive or negative, you get out what you put in. Think about what you’re thinking about, then do something about your thinking. Your ability to succeed in all things is directly related to your ability to control the outcomes of your physical and mental efforts. Once you realize this, you are ahead of the game. Every Monster in the Making® knows “Now We Got Us a Game!” Losers don’t keep playing. Winners play to win – even when they are the only one in the game. When you start training your brain, it’s game on. Play on… Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
As Joe Cocker sings, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” That’s one of the joys of life. No man is an island. Thanksgiving weekend Coached PracticeTM at the Berry Ranch is always enjoyable. This year even more so as we end the day with a circle of bull riders and friends in a group conversation with David. From the start, the discussion topics are both frank and rank, hardcore and heartfelt. The evening is an unscripted and surprising mix of questions and responses. Episode 21 of the Monster in the Making® podcast with a small circle of friends reminds us that we are forever grateful – to you, for you and with you. Life bucks. Let it. Then ride on. If you’ve spent any time around Monster Bull® you know when you nod your head, David’s got your back. That’s what friends are for. Happy Thanksgiving. God bless bull riders. God bless Monsters in the Making®. Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
We all have dreams. Only some have goals. There’s a difference. Being a Monster in the Making® indicates progress. Progress means change. Past successes don’t guarantee a fantastic future. What used to work for you, may require an upgrade in your efforts for continued success. Episode 20 is all about making your efforts today more effective. Achieving your goals takes realizing your reality, and then waking up and working on it. If you want more, do more or do it differently. You can want more, do more, be more, but it’s hard to achieve more – however you define it – when you are in a rut. If you’re not seeing progress, get help. If you are in a rut, quit spinning your wheels. Quit digging deeper if you want to go higher. Take a hard look at where you are and where you want to be. You’ll see possibilities ahead with a fresh set of eyes. You’ll be able to see out of any rut you may be in – even if you have to borrow a periscope for a moment to see above ground level. As always, the Monster in the Making® podcast is about progress. It’s about “What do you want? How bad do you want it?” and Episode 20 is especially about “What are you willing to do about it?” There’s more. Seek more. Until then - Be you. Be real. Be better. Be a Monster in the Making®.
What do rock stars, country music legends, presidents of the United States (both Republican and Democrat,) and Monster in the Making® podcast host David Berry all have in common? They’ve all been documented “flipping people off.” Some even consider it their signature move. What was centuries ago considered a vulgar gesture, has evolved in several different directions in recent decades. So flipping out when you get flipped off may be a sign of your age rather than an offending sign. Are you the kind who can’t overlook things without over exaggerating them? Do you go over the top on what you should be able to overcome? Over reacting is so over rated. Easily offended is so overboard. Get real. Get over it. Episode 19 of the Monster in the Making® podcast is a flipping reality check worth checking out before you flip out. You can judge or you can use better judgement. There’s a hugely humbling difference. The choice is yours. Episode 19 is all about choosing your options. Either way, be you, be real, be better. Be a Monster in the Making. And don’t be offended.
You’ve heard it said that “my mind ran away with me,” “I got distracted,” “my emotions got the best of me,” etc. Eastern philosophers call these energized, unproductive, focus-lacking and often random states of mental chaos the “monkey in your mind.”
Life happens, and whether you think it happens to you or for you, you’re right. Either way, however, it will happen. You reaction (or lack thereof) to what goes on in your life each moment can enhance, endanger, energize or even eliminate your immediate future. Our reactions rule our lives. Each of us has a choice how to react. We can all choose the high road.
The Man Behind the Monster gets put on the hot seat without warning!
We are born bouncers. Bouncing babies, bouncing toys, bouncing walkers – pleasure from bouncing is in our DNA. Episode 13 of the Monster in the Making® podcast is called Bounce Back. As infants and children, bouncing is physically fun. As we grow, it’s mentally mandatory. How fun it is as adults is up to us.Bouncing has consequences. Landing wrong hurts. A bad bounce can break things. By definition, bouncing is an abrupt change of direction after an impact. This can be physical or mental. Maturity helps us determine the outcome and direction after the impact. Our reactions at that point shape our future paths.
Knowing the difference makes all the difference. There’s no such thing as a passive passion.
Life isn't the movies. Day in and day out, most of us don't get special lighting; hair, makeup and wardrobe staff to look our best; personal assistants or the option for constant re-takes and do-overs. We get out of it what we put into it. That's life.
You can dream about it. You can talk about it. Unless you work on it, it's just a wish.
Sometimes winning is scary. if you're not used to succeeding consistently or being around people that do, it can be downright intimidating. It's sometimes easier to support other's goals and dreams than it is to take the responsibility to make ours come true.
David hits a nerve we all have in this episode. He drags his ever-faithful studio 'groupies" Brandon (producer) and Holly (his wife) into "group therapy" on this one. Lots of fun facing reality with fresh perspectives on a sometimes stale subject.
Reality begins in your thoughts. Make it real. Make it great. Imagine that.
