There's not much going on in baseball right now. Mostly it's just dudes getting ready for the regular season, and we know from years of experience that the results of that are utterly meaningless. So instead of talking about baseball teams and baseball and numbers are ARG (though Michael did give me some Red Sox hot takes and they are SCORCHING!) I was privileged to be joined by Michael Clair of MLB.com for a draft! That's the podcast thing to do, right? Michael and I drafted the things we like from individual franchises, and it was fun! We laughed a lot and I hope you will too. Thanks so much to Michael Clair for coming on. You can and should follow him on Twitter @MichaelSClair, and read his work at MLB.com. This is the 14th Sox Outsider Podcast which is still the companion to the Sox Outsider newsletter that you should totally go and subscribe to at soxoutsider.substack.com. I said a while back that while this podcast is about the Red Sox, and it is, it's also an excuse for me to talk to cool and fun people, and Chris Crawford is both those things. That is in addition to being really knowledgable too, a fact he demonstrated during our wide-ranging discussion of the Sox. We covered notable Red Sox minor leaguers, young major leaguers, the upcoming MLB Draft, and a bunch of other stuff. It was a great conversation and I'm sure you'll enjoy it! You can find Chris Crawford at NBC Sports Edge and on Twitter @Crawford_MILB. You can (and should!) subscribe to the companion newsletter to this podcast, the Sox Outsider Newsletter, which you can find at soxoutsider.substack.com. You can find Matt (me!) on Twitter @mattymatty2000. Thanks for listening everybody!
In between recording with this episode's guest, Matthew Trueblood of Baseball Prospectus, the Penning Bull Newsletter, and Twins Daily, I blew a 9-6 lead in foosball to my 12 year old son. So perhaps I wasn't in the most chipper mood when I recorded the intro, but I should've been because this podcast was really one of the best I've done, due entirely to my guest, Mr. Trueblood. We talked some Red Sox off-season, tried in vain to avoid the Mookie Betts trade, and then worked around the AL attempting to get a handle on the other divisions and, maybe with an ulterior motive, to get some more information about the potential Wild Card challengers the Red Sox will face in 2021. It really was a fun conversation and I hope you enjoy listening to it. You can follow Matthew Trueblood @MATrueblood on Twitter, read him at Baseball Prospectus, Twins Daily, and subscribe to his newsletter, Penning Bull (penningbull.com). And while you're at it, you can subscribe to the companion newsletter to this podcast, the Sox Outsider newsletter, at soxoutsider.substack.com, where you will find all of Matt Kory's writing about the Boston Red Sox. Matt has written at The Athletic, Vice Sports, FanGraphs, Baseball Prospectus, and been featured at MLB.com and Fox Sports, and now he writes a Red Sox newsletter. (Larry was unable to confirm reading Red Sox-related newsletters can improve your health, but let's just assume that's true.) Before that, Matt gets into what the projections are saying about the 2021 Red Sox, Jackie Bradley's departure to Milwaukee, and some of the prospects in Red Sox camp who we can finally get eyes on. Follow Larry Olmsted @TravelFoodGuy on Twitter, and check out his book where ever fine books are sold. If you enjoyed this podcast, check out the Sox Outsider newsletter at soxoutsider.substack.com. The first episode of the new Sox Outsider Podcast is here! Like, it's literally right here! In it, Matt Kory introduces himself as your host, talks about Sox Outsider, the Red Sox newsletter you should subscribe to. Then he discusses the Red Sox team defense and how things look right now, and some potential additions the team could make before the season starts. Then Matt talks Red Sox with Eno Sarris, National Baseball Writer for The Athletic. Happy first episode!
It's been a week, friends. The world is upside down. We hope you are well and safe. In the meantime, we humbly offer this podcast. In it, Brendan and Matt discuss what could happen to the baseball season and if it returns, in what form it might come back. Then, in a continuation of our AL East Preview Series, we are privileged to be joined by Jay Jaffe of FanGraphs, to discuss the Yankees. It's a fun and informative discussion! Then Brendan and Matt discuss the latest Red Sox news, namely that the team has announced that star pitcher Chris Sale will be getting Tommy John surgery. Thanks for listening, everyone. Stay safe.
Right before hitting record on this episode, Brendan's cat, Dot, stepped on his computer's off button and shut the whole thing down. Kinda like Chris Sale and the Red Sox season. In this, the 39th episode of Red Sox Coast to Coast, Brendan and Matt (and Dot) discuss what potentially losing Sale could mean to the Red Sox in 2020. They discuss the state of the rotation, and what adding Collin McHugh means to it. Then Matt gets on the horn with Andrew Stoeten of The Athletic and the Birds All Day Podcast to discuss the Toronto Blue Jays, their off-season, and how things look for them headed into the season. It was a fun conversation! If you enjoy the episode, that's fantastic! Thanks!
Now freed of the burden of paying Mookie Betts and David Price [tongue firmly planted in cheek] the Red Sox have money to spend and, this being spring training, very little place to spend it. On this, the 38th episode of the Red Sox Coast to Coast Podcast, Brendan and Matt discuss a few of the available outlets for that money, namely contract extensions to Rafael Devers and Eduardo Rodriguez, and the proposed and much-speculated-on trade with the Padres. They also comment on Chris Sale's illness and how the time he will miss could impact the Red Sox post-season chances. Then they start their AL East Preview Series with the Baltimore Orioles! Don't worry, that part is pretty short. If you enjoy the podcast, please give us five stars on Apple Podcasts. Thanks for listening and we'll be back with another episode next week or soon after.
Brendan and Matt are joined by Chris Hatfield of Sox Prospects for a reexamination of the Mookie Betts trade (the second one, not the first one). They discuss the reasons why trading Betts makes sense, and why it doesn't. There's some give and take in this one, and I think it's one of our best episodes yet. Chris makes some great points about the deal, and it's absolutely worth listening to for that alone. A few other points are discussed as well, but mostly this is a Mookie Trade podcast. We'll get back to your regularly scheduled podcasting next week. If you dig this episode, consider subscribing to the show. You can do that on iTunes or your podcast listening device of choice. Special thanks to Chris Hatfield for his valuable time and invaluable insight. We'll be back next week or thereabouts. Thanks for listening, everybody!
Wow. This really sucks. Brendan and Matt discuss the Red Sox trade of Mookie Betts and David Price to the Dodgers for Alex Verdugo and Brusdar Graterol. Thanks for listening, everyone. We appreciate it.
The 35th episode of the Red Sox Coast to Coast Podcast starts off with good news: Mitch Moreland returns! We discuss his new deal and why he fits well on the roster. Then we get into the latest on Mookie Betts, at least a little bit, and do our best to not let this one topic sideline our whole podcast, which for the most part we manage to do. Brendan and Matt also discuss the latest Dustin Pedroia news, and Boston's managerial opening and some of the names that have been discussed publicly. If you want to support the podcast, give us some stars on the ol' iTunes machine. Better yet, tell a friend about us. Thanks, as always, for listening!
Last episode Matt said we'd podcast if there was anything to podcast about and so, if on cue, the Red Sox fired Alex Cora. Cora was fired in response to his role in the Astros' sign stealing scheme, and so Brendan and Matt discuss that and the millions of other aspects of this. This includes Cora, Dombrowski, the scheme itself and the Astros' penalty, and other stuff. Then they get into the Red Sox sign stealing scheme, and, oh yeah, the Red Sox need a new manager and where are they going to get one in mid-January? This is a complicated situation with a reach across lots of different aspects, but we try to make sense of it as best we can. We hope you enjoy this episode. If you do, please subscribe to the podcast and, if you feel so inclined, give us five stars and/or a review on iTunes. There will be more to this story, so expect another podcast soon enough. Thanks for listening!
Early on in Episode 33 of The Coast to Coast Red Sox Podcast, Brendan hits upon the true and completely unreported guiding principle of this Red Sox off-season: sign players with silly names to slip Jerry Remy up during Red Sox broadcasts. This is truly the way and the light and the standard by which all other Red Sox roster moves will be judged. During this, the 33rd episode of this podcast, Brendan and Matt discuss that and much much more. The switching of backup catchers, the self-imposed jettisoning of Sam Travis, the Mookie-to-L.A. rumors, and finally, we step back and take a look at how this team stacks up right now. It's a fun episode and we hope you enjoy listening! Speaking of listening, thanks for doing that! If you like the podcast, feel free to subscribe on your favorite podcast-listening service. You could even go to Apple Podcasts and give us a 5-star rating and/or a review. We thank those who already have done so. That said, you don't have to! Listening to the podcast is thanks enough for us. We appreciate you and we'll be back next week or soon thereafter. Happy new year, everyone!
This Red Sox off-season is an exercise in waiting for bad news. The talk about trading Mookie Betts, and now the talk about trading David Price has more than one Red Sox fan questioning the direction of the franchise. We here at Red Sox Coast to Coast aren't immune to that, but we strive for intellectual discourse, and to that end, for this, the 32nd episode of the show, we bring on Matthew Trueblood of Baseball Prospectus. Matthew wrote an insightful article about what the Red Sox might bring back in a Mookie Betts trade (with examples!) and we discuss the heck out of it. Also discussed are David Price, Theo Epstein, Jose Peraza, and, the similarities between Theo's Red Sox and Theo's Cubs. It was truly a fun episode to record and we hope you enjoy listening. A special thanks to Matt Trueblood for coming on and spending his free time with us. Check out his writing at BaseballProspectus.com and subscribe to his newsletter (I'm a happy subscriber!) at penningbull.com. Also, since you're doing things, head over to Apple Podcasts and give us a five star review! Or, instead, just do nothing but enjoy the podcast. Either way, we do sincerely thank you for listening.
In this, the 31st episode of the Red Sox Coast to Coast Podcast, Brendan O'Toole and Matt Kory discuss the trade of backup catcher Sandy Leon to Cleveland, the tendering of a contract to centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and what that means to Bradley's status on the team, and the reported return to health of ace starter Chris Sale. Further, because this is the Winter of Mookie, they discuss what Sale's health means to the speculative 2020 Red Sox and why that is another data point against any potential trade of Mookie Betts. It should be noted that all data points are data points against any potential trade of Mookie Betts. If you like the podcast, consider giving us five stars on Apple Podcasts or even writing a short review of the podcast. We appreciate and thank everyone who has done that already. But don't feel obligated. We appreciate everyone who listens. Thanks for that. We'll be back next week or shortly thereafter.
