We close with some love for Ohtani and give our all-star lineups. Whether, it is good morning, good afternoon, or goodnight when you are listening, thank you for tuning in.

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the Giants' wild weekend in San Diego. Alex Dickerson tested positive for Covid-19 prior to Friday's game, and the game was postponed minutes before it started. In the following days, however, it became clear that Dickerson's positive test was a false positive. Once the league was confident that no members of the Giants had the virus, a doubleheader was scheduled for Sunday. Prior to the doubleheader, Kevin Gausman was scratched from his start due to elbow discomfort. He received an MRI and the results are not yet known. The Giants fell completely flat in Sunday's doubleheader. They were dominated by the newly acquired Mike Clevinger in the first game, and then Garrett Richards and the Padres bullpen held the Giants to just one run in the second game. Logan Webb pitched pretty well besides allowing a solo home run to Wil Myers. Sam Selman entered a tie game in the sixth inning and issues two walks to start the frame. Both runners ended up scoring after Evan Longoria booted a ground ball that could have been a double play. It's easy to say the Giants offense looked flat in this series, but the Padres pitching deserves most of the credit. It's now scoreboard watching season for the Giants. The Brewers and Rockies trail San Francisco by just 1.5 games in the standings for the NL's final playoff spot, and the Reds and Mets are just two games back. The Brewers play a doubleheader with the Cardinals today, and the Reds play a doubleheader today with the Pirates. Those games could have a big impact on the standings. The Giants' remaining schedule features some winnable games and some tough series. Four of their remaining 13 games are against these extremely tough Padres.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Following the All-Star break, the Angels announced that Shohei Ohtani has been cleared to start a throwing program and possibly attempt to pitch again this season. Oh boy...The plague of injuries that has stifled the Angels' rotation has been well documented this season, and Ohtani was a major part of that. Fears of Tommy John surgery have subsided, especially as Ohtani continues in his progression. However, the expectation of Ohtani throwing on a mound again this season needs to be tempered. Halo fans only need to remember Garrett Richards to see how seemingly positive recovery after stem cell treatment can take a turn for the worst.Your questions are also featured in the Friday mailbag as we get you ready for the 2nd half of the season. Though the Angels picked up a nice win over the Mariners, they seem to have lost Garrett Richards in the process, as the right-hander left the game early in the 3rd inning due to forearm irritation.Always perceived as having ace-type potential in a Major League rotation, Richard's inability to stay healthy has consistently hampered his progress. The latest setback comes at an inopportune time ahead of the trade deadline, as the Angels attempt to navigate the market and figure out an exact plan to execute towards contention.Kole Calhoun has also emerged as the force in the lineup we all hoped he could be, looking far more relaxed at the plate and contributing at a high level since returning from the DL. His impact is discussed as well in today's episode. Tune in!Don't forget to follow the show on Twitter @LockedOnAngels and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play. As Andrelton SImmons returned from a trip to the disabled list, he entered a very unfamiliar lineup from when he left.Garrett Richards, Nick Tropeano, Zack Cozart, and Jim Johnson all were sent to the DL just before the weekend, leading to a couple of rough losses for the Halos in Oaklan, dropping 2 out of 3 to the Athletics. Now, the team finds themselves 8 games out of a playoff spot, despite having the 6th best record in the American League. As bleak as things look, the path to a full rebuild isn't rosy either, leaving Billy Eppler with only one logical route...Studs and Duds from the weekend are also revealed in today's episode, before previewing the quick two-game set against the Diamondbacks. First, it was Garrett Richards leaving after just two innings pitched. Next, Zack Cozart leaves with a shoulder injury. After a Mitch Haniger walkoff home run, the Angels were left in shambles in Seattle.A sweep at the hands of the Mariners puts the Halos a full 7 games out of a playoff spot in the American League, despite a respectable 37-32 record. While the team was playing fairly decent heading into this western showdown, the sweep leaves the team and fanbase feeling awfully pessimistic about their chances moving forward, especially with the ailments to Richards and Cozart. In order to stay in the hunt, the Angels will be looking for a lot of unsung heroes.Thursday's episode also features the Gear Grinder, focusing on infield shifts and ways to combat them. On Friday, news broke of the UCL injury to Shohei Ohtani and his possible need for Tommy John surgery. Over the weekend, the Angels' rotation proved they could withstand the loss of the right-hander this season.Ohtani slowly began to assert himself as the dominant force in the rotation, but the emergences of Tyler Skaggs, Andrew Heaney, and Jaime Barria should prove to withstand the loss of the prized right-hander. Garrett Richards must also continue to improve and work late in games, but the talent is certainly there to survive. The biggest question lies in the offense's ability to be consistent at the plate and provide support when needed.Taylor Ward of 247 Sports also joins the podcast to share his thoughts on the Halos' 2018 draft class. Studs and Duds of the Weekend also feature strong performances from Jose Fernandez and Albert Pujols. The Angels' starting rotation has quickly become the strength of the organization, especially after the latest performance from Andrew Heaney.Since switching over to the 1st base side of the pitching rubber, Heaney's ability to jam left-handed hitters and get right-handers to swing over the top of breaking pitches has been remarkable, leading to a sensational run of performances in his last 8 starts. With the upsides of Garrett Richards, Shohei Ohtani, and Tyler Skaggs, this starting rotation may be exactly what Billy Eppler envisioned all along. However, the Seattle Mariners continue their winning ways, and they become the focus of Wild West Wednesday. The episode concludes with a brief look at the Angels' Day 2 draft selections, littered with collegiate right-handed pitchers. First, Jamie Barria on Friday night. Then, Garrett Richards attacked hitters on Saturday. On Sunday, Tyler Skaggs polished off a superb weekend from the Angels' starting rotation. If not for a controversial play not falling the Angels' way on Saturday, the Halos could have emerged from the weekend with a sweep over the Texas Rangers. The trio listed above combined for 19 innings without giving up an earned run while racking up 21 strikeouts. While the offense slowly rounds back into form, this starting rotation has shown the ability to carry the team. If this team clicks in every facet, watch out American League.Studs and Duds of the weekend are also revealed in today's episode, followed by a preview of this week's series against the Kansas City Royals at Angel Stadium. With the Angels continuing to struggle on their current 10-game road trip, they looked to their supposed ace to halt the woes. Garrett Richards failed to buck that trend in New York.Struggling with the command of his fastball, Richards consistently got behind in the count, allowing the Yankee hitters to stay patient and let things unravel. Richards failed to work out of the 3rd inning, adding to his long list of poor starts against New York. Looking back over his starts this season, there are only a handful of quality starts, let alone outings that define an ace of a Major League rotation.Tuesday also means it's time for the Down on the Farm Report. This week, the focus centers on the holes at the Major League level, defined by the struggles of Kole Calhoun, Ian Kinsler, and Luis Valbuena. Can David Fletcher stay hot in a potential call-up to Anaheim? Maybe Matt Thaiss is the solution at first base? Is there a dark horse candidate to fill any of these roles? One botched groundball led to an Astros' home run, and just like that, Houston took the series. However, another magnificent start by an Angels' starting pitcher leaves us hopeful for the fate of this rotation in Anaheim...Garrett Richards largely went toe-to-toe with Justin Verlander on Wednesday, tossing 7 innings and giving up 2 runs, neither of which were earned. Over the last 16 games, a Halo starter has not allowed more than 3 earned runs, a streak unmatched in decades of Angels' baseball. Plenty of us had reservations about the rotation in spring training, but it seems as if Eppler's confidence was well placed. The Thursday Gear Grinder covers the fallout of Robinson Cano's 80-game suspension for taking a banned substance, and the greater problem of athletes making excuses for not knowing what goes in their bodies. Lastly, a quick preview of the upcoming 4-game series against Tampa Bay closes out the show. Ever since shifting over to the first base side of the pitching rubber, Andrew Heaney has pitched phenomenally. Last night was his most brilliant start this season, and quite possibly of his career.Heaney struck out 10 hitters in 8 innings of work, beautifully mixing his sinker, changeup, and slurve against the Astros, who simply could not make hard contact all evening. If Heaney continues his current pace, he gives the Angels a formidable top half of the rotation, with Shohei Ohtani, Garrett Richards, and Tyler Skaggs all throwing well of late. With Jaime Barria and Nick Tropeano providing solid support, we may be seeing the dawn of a new era for the Angels' rotation. Not all is well in Anaheim however, as Keynan Middleton finds himself back on the DL and possibly out for the year with UCL trouble. That puts immense stress on an already thin bullpen. Who can we trust back there?Tuesday also means your Down on the Farm report, providing updates on another solid outing from Griffin Canning, while Brandon Marsh and Jo Adell both show signs of a turnaround in Burlington. Albert Pujols checked another milestone off the list, roping a single to right field on Friday for hit #3,000. That ended up being a major highlight in a weekend full of them for the Angels in Seattle. Not only did the team win the series against their division rivals in the Pacific Northwest, Mike Trout went 9-for-14, including a mammoth home run on Sunday. The trio of Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs, and Shohei Ohtani all pitched very well, with Ohtani's performance standing out, blending his devastating array of pitches. If those three can perform like a true 1-2-3 punch atop the Halo rotation, the ceiling for this squad is untapped. Not everything came up roses for the Halos this weekend, however. The bullpen struggled mightily at times, especially in Saturday's loss. Ian Kinsler continued to slump, collecting just one hit on the weekend and seeing his batting average drop below .200. Simply put, not acceptable for a leadoff hitter. All of that, and a review on fried grasshoppers, a delicacy at Safeco Field. Cold and frigid temperatures did little to slow down the Angels over the weekend, as the team continued its winning streak in sweeping the Kansas City Royals. With one of the best records in baseball through the first two weeks of the season, Halo fans have cause to be excited. Yet, we are always reminded that the season is young, and plenty can happen between now and the All-Star break, much less by September. With that, we examine the hottest starts of the past 10 years in the American League, and how each of those teams fared. The results are certainly encouraging for the Angels and their playoff aspirations.Monday also means the Studs and Duds of the weekend segment, highlighted by strong performances from Garrett Richards and high-end sluggers Mike Trout, Justin Upton, and Albert Pujols. To close out the show, a tribute to the legacy of Jackie Robinson following Major League Baseball's celebration on Sunday. With Opening Day in the books, it's time to reflect on a heartbreaking extra-innings loss in Oakland before moving on to the rest of the weekend. While the Halos fell 6-5 in 11 innings, there are plenty of positive takeaways from game #1 that far outweighed any negatives. Garrett Richards dazzled in the early goings, mixing pitches well and showing off his devastation fastball/slider combination before succumbing to fatigue that lead to two Oakland home runs to get the hosts back in the game. Kole Calhoun and Zack Cozart each had phenomenal starts at the plate, continuing their hot finishes to spring training.By the way, Albert Pujols is back. The slimmer Pujols crushed a no doubt shot to left that gave the Angels the lead in the late innings, but the bullpen could not quite hold it. Before we bash on the pitching staff, let's not forget that the bullpen as a whole gave up just 2 runs in 6 innings. That's just baseball sometimes.Don't forget to follow the show on Twitter @LockedOnAngels and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Google Play! Learn more about your ad choices.
