In this conversation Erica speaks with Courtney Brame, founder of both Something Positive for Positive People- a vital resource for STI stigma re-education, and Selfed a mental and emotional health nonprofit for Black men, as well as  a yoga instructor and yoga therapist in training. He's spent over half of his life studying, attending endless workshops and being therapatized up the yin yang to understand his own internal struggle to figure it out and ultimately, experience that ever elusive thing called inner peace. What he thinks he's figured out is that love, worthiness and perfection are the foundation of our being and that it is up to us to embark on a journey of releasing any emotional, physical, mental or spiritual beliefs that are not in alignment with this Truth. Whilst Trent continues to walk his own journey he feels obligated, and privileged, to share the wisdom he's acquired with others as they walk through theirs. Trent Blanchard is an accidental alchemist; through the love he showed himself in facing his own struggle, he has transformed his pain into medicine that heals himself and others.Contact:Trent Blanchard, MA760.481.4445https://www.instagram.com/trent4change/Photo: Copyright Wilkinson/2024Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

Touching and exploring different pleasure points can build anticipation and desire. Communication and making noise during sexual encounters can enhance pleasure and indicate enjoyment. Self-pleasure and self-care are important aspects of sexual well-being. There is a need for education and support for individuals with STIs, particularly in reducing the stigma surrounding herpes. The conference on sexual health and mental health provides a platform for discussing the impact of STIs on mental well-being and promoting education and awareness. This episode is a glimpse at my 1-1 conversations I have. Moving forward, for the sake of this community, the growth of the Something Positive for Positive People non profit organization and podcast, I'm answering herpes stigma and advice related questions AFTER a donation has been received. I will point you in the direction of my available resources including the website www.spfpp.org, the spfpp podcast, and social media pages (mainly Instagram @CourtneyBrame_). If donating does not work for you, then I ask that we make this content shareable via a podcast episode interview. You can view this as an out loud “coaching/support/discovery/venting” session. I am really pushing for people in our community to get involved ya'll. Too often I find myself getting ghosted by people who offer to be guests, or swore they'd donate or wanted to get involved, only to just disappear on me. Our guest, Taylor, (almost 30 who's had herpes since the age of 15) is my first guest who moved forward with this. I still don't think I answered her question, but she definitely left with some more things to consider, while also leaving her own imprint on the SPFPP space/podcast community. Here's what you can expect as one of these guests if you choose to not donate, and that's fine. There is plenty of material on www.spfpp.org for you to find what you're looking for. But if you want direct access, engagement or a shortcut to the answer, please be ready to support this community.

Caller Jackie: has a husband of nine months that has struggled with pornography for 20 years. She knew about his addiction before they got married, but was under the impression he had it under control and was working recovery. Her husband had a handful of relapses that he told her about during their marriage, but she thought this was the only problem. 7 months into their marriage, she found pornography on his phone. She then felt a wall between them and felt crazy all of the time, thinking she was the problem. Since then, she has caught him in several lies, but finds herself forgiving him and letting it go despite the toll it has on her mentally. Manipulation plays a key role in our marriage and she is struggling. Her question is, how do I find healing in knowing my trust has been repeatedly broken? Episode 289 of Something Positive for Positive People is the trigger warning I shouldn't have to make. If any of what I say comes as a surprise to you, I don't think you really get the gist of what my work is about. Herpes is what led us here, but getting through it is going to require some self-evaluation of identity. The psychology of the self-image is what I challenge people on. Everyone should be triggered by this podcast's existence until you get to a point of challenging what that trigger is. I believe that same intense energy that comes from our fight or flight response is the same energy that can be utilized to trace the trigger to the source of it which is the trauma. I done worked too damn hard on myself to get to this place of being able to just exist for someone to tell me something I say MIGHT be triggering to someone. Especially when this podcast is about health, and I ALWAYS speak about health, I'm supposed to shut down sharing my experience because someone might what? Be challenged and take different action? I'm willing to take the gamble that someone views me differently or chooses to pursue support from another resource. But in all honesty with the way people come and go (as they should) I don't think I'll be listening to anyone who isn't doing one of those four letter F words I mention in this podcast to me. That all aside, SPFPP is no longer paying for people to get therapy. All donations go toward the ongoing functioning of the organization to integrate the communication skills of people with lived experience navigating STI diagnoses into STD Prevention efforts. Quicky #25 comes from Season 2 Episode 11: #27 Sex with Herpes: Diagnosis to Disclosure (with Courtney Brame) Today, I chat with Courtney Brame, the Founder and podcast host of Something Positive for Positive People. As a podcast, this serves as a hub of interviews with people living with genital herpes along with his own experiences navigating stigma from diagnosis to disclosure. As a nonprofit, SPFPP raises money to pay for people who are struggling with HSV stigma to receive therapy. After his own diagnosis in 2012, Courtney navigated the world identifying heavily with his diagnosis unconsciously as you'll hear more about in this episode. After finding community, all of his problems with dating and disclosure appeared to disappear. However, this made space for underlying concerns herpes had exposed. 1 was how many people despite having community and a space for finding love regardless of their HSV status wanting to end their lives. 2 was how true to himself he was able to be with these complete strangers who had one thing in common (knowing about his HSV status) versus how hidden he was with people who'd known him most of his life who did not know about his herpes status. We talk about living with herpes, from contracting the virus and receiving a diagnosis, to managing it, how it affects your masculinity and ultimately discussing it with and disclosing it to a partner. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cam-fraser/message

Something Positive for Positive People

Sexual health is mental health. You'll hear me say this throughout several episodes of Something Positive for Positive People. What happens when your sexual health is influenced by something that isn't caused by sex directly? While this episode is not about herpes, we see herpes stigma show up in Jaclyn's shared experiences as she navigated 10 years of seeking out treatment and a diagnosis for something that significantly impacted mental health, relationships, ability to have intercourse, and her general sense of well-being. Through listening, we see a whole different angle of how relationships are impacted by not just sexual health but genital accessibility as a way of connecting in relationships. One thing I see as a commonality between Lichen Sclerosus (Vulvar presenting) and genital herpes specifically in women is this overcompensating in relationships to please a partner at the expense of one's own pleasure for the sake of maintaining a relationship. The endurance of less desired sex to accommodate an area where learned communication skills through sex education can support us. It's not “normal” to have pain with sex and we don't know where to go in a lot of these cases for consultation or treatment. I believe this podcast episode will offer up a general sense of direction even if you yourself may not experience these symptoms described. I share my own experience with a partner of mine who takes anti-depressants and attributes that to her difficulties with orgasm from clitoral stimulation. It's difficult for her to climax and she requires the setting on her vibrator that sounds like a lawn mower for a long time to achieve orgasm. Given my understanding through self education of genital health, in an attempt to explore more options for her pleasure, I lifted the clitoral hood and noticed some difficulty with its retraction similar to someone with an uncircumcised penis during retraction who may show phimosis symptoms (difficulty retracting foreskin). Wow all my jobs really do help me with this work! So we were able to have some communication around that and her own pleasure sense was expanded from that communication. Not only that though, but sexual health as pleasure ties into genital health as a practice. We should be touching ourselves, our bodies, knowing their sensations, cleaning them, checking in with those parts for what our baseline is. If something is off, seek guidance. Going back to the part about relationships, one thing I know people living with herpes can learn here is that communicating in relationships as a whole is important and difficult. Disclosing your status is one thing, but once you move forward, each time you maybe shouldn't have sex due to outbreaks, that could bring up fear of them leaving for a more accessible partner. You could feel as if you're not doing “enough” according to what the expected norms are going into the relationship. Again, sexual health is mental health. What's key here is that we have communication skills to negotiate and navigate conversations to set and manage expectations with not just sexual partners, but also our health care providers, our friends, and anyone around us. I'm grateful for Jaclyn's work in this space and hope that you find some value in this podcast episode. The timing here is great because I'm interviewing health care providers to learn how patients can better navigate the system and the stigma. You can connect with Jaclyn on Instagram at thelostlabiachronicles to learn more about Lichen Sclerosus, seek support, guidance and direction and more by visiting her linktree: https://linktr.ee/thelostlabiachronicles

People praise me for being vulnerable on a regular basis and I've accepted it up until my therapist pointed out to me that people don't connect with that part of me. It didn't take long for me to grasp what that really meant because I know I've really been able to hide behind this mask of vulnerability that is Something Positive for Positive People. He pointed out to me that I'm not sharing my experience or much of anything about me, as Courtney. I've realized that is because I've accumulated this immunity to criticism through SPFPP. Who's going to give me shit about having herpes when I'm doing this so people don't wanna kill themselves? You gotta be a real dick to talk shit about me for that. But I do open up myself to the criticism that comes with sharing my own emotions and experiences as a man navigating this space and that feels right in my soul to speak that truth so here it is. I put this out here to connect with and encourage more men into this space that is crying for masculine presence and experiences.

Our guest, Nina from episode 203: https://www.spfpp.org/podcast/spfpp-xx-identity-care-is-checking-in-vs-checking-out rejoins us on Something Positive for Positive People with the intention of speaking mostly about grief. While that was the original plan, we fanned out into a conversation that while unexpected, really put a pleasant perspective on disclosure. While the bulk of the burden of initiating a conversation about sexual health appears to be on the person who has herpes because they are expected to disclose their positive status, what we're actually doing is initiating an attempt for intimacy. As a community, we may be one of the few kinds of people proactively combating commitment phobia, and the other secondary effects of hookup culture by initiating invites for the kind of intimacy that potentially follows a herpes disclosure. In this episode, we also discuss the word “relationship” and how potentially triggering that is in a dating sense. When we look at the definition of the word which is just a way we relate to others, what we see is that everyone has a relationship with everyone, even if there's no relationship at all, that's the relationship. Hookup culture teaches us to move further away from the discomfort of intimacy and emotional connection through vulnerability by us putting our efforts into defining things in ways that don't invite closeness. Think about friends, and then think about friends with benefits. We're not as close with our friends physically as we are to someone we have sex with, so we're close but not too too close and that's what's safe because vulnerability is scary. We even go as far as calling a relationship a “situation” in order to save ourselves from emotionally being invested in the humanity of one another. We defer to “the situation” rather than having to communicate about what we want with one another and accept the outcome of whether or not we can meet each others' actual needs which is more often than not, intimacy.
